II.
Have you read Dune(《沙丘》) or watched the film? On the desert planet Arrakis, people wear specially designed suits. These suits collect sweat(汗液) and urine(尿液) and turn them into clean drinking water. This may sound like magic, but some water-stressed places in the world are already recycling wastewater in similar ways. Astronauts in space depend on recycled water too.
But what about us? "We don't live in space or on a desert planet," you might say. "Why would we ever need to turn our sweat and urine into drinking water?" Well, we might not start by recycling wastewater for drinking, but we can recycle it for other uses. Let's think about flushing (冲) toilets, for example. Every day, plenty of clean fresh water is used to flush away human waste. This doesn't seem like the wisest use of our fresh water, does it?
Some people are already rethinking such practices. They are looking for smarter ways to use water. I recently visited Jenfelder, a new neighbourhood in Hamburg, Germany, with a wastewater reuse project! Traditionally, water comes into a city from outside, and wastewater is sent back to treatment factories far away. This new system separates wastewater into three streams to be reused locally. Rainwater is collected to water the gardens. "Gray water" from kitchen and bathroom is used to flush toilets. And "Black water" from toilets is sent to a local treatment factory to be turned into biogas(沼气). The system reduces water use by 30 per cent and produces electricity for hundreds of homes.
1. What's special about people's shirts on the planet Arrakis?
2. What does the writer think of flushing away human waste with fresh water?
3. Can you put the new system in Paragraph 3 or part of it into practice? How?
4. Make a mind map according to the new system.(每空不限一词)
III.
At 13, Sophia Martinez has become the youngest winner of the National Environmental Youth Award. Her project "Eco-Warrior App" joins technology with environmental protection, helping 1. u_______ track(追踪) their environmental effect through fun daily challenges.
Sophia's journey began during her 3rd grade field trip to a 2. p_________ river. "Seeing plastic waste blocking the water made me angry," she looked 3. b _________.By age 9,she started programming simple environmental games using free online resources. Her recent app, developed with recycled smartphones, has been used by 50 schools nationwide.
What makes Sophia's work 4. s_______ is her focus on community activities. "Tech 5. a________ can't save the planet. We need to change ideas first," she said. The app's group challenges have 6. r_________ school dining hall waste by 30% in pilot(试点的) areas.
Her science teacher, Mr Thompson, praises Sophia's hard work. "She 7. f__________ 17 times while designing the waste-tracking tool. Each failure became a chance for her to learn." Parents are happy with how the app turns eco-actions into 8. f_________ activities. "Now my kids remind me to bring bags that can be used again," shared one mother.
Looking ahead, Sophia is thinking of 9. s__________ up a "Green Mentor" programme that connects students with scientists who study the environment. "Every child should protect their future," she stated. With a recent money support from the Environmental Protection Organisation, her team plans to add more 10. l_________ to the app to benefit non-English speaking communities.
Question: What kind of app would you design to solve environmental protection problems?
IV.
March 12th is China's National Tree Planting Day, a special day when people across the country plant trees to protect the environment. According to the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, in 2024, China completed over 100 million mu (about 66,667 square kilometres) of afforestation, which is nearly as large as Ireland. One of the most exciting achievements happened on November 28th, 2024, when workers completed a 3,046-kilometre green belt around the Taklimakan Desert, the second-largest desert in the world. This important project, called the "Great Green Wall", helps stop the desert from growing larger.
Until now, forests cover more than 25% of China's land, and the total amount of wood in these forests is over 20 billion cubic metres(立方米). Grasslands remain healthy, covering more than half of the country's land area. What's more, China now has the largest area of man-made forests in the world. These forests not only make the country more beautiful but also help protect the nature.
Zhang Liming, a government official, explained that since 2012, China had worked hard to plant trees everywhere. So far, Chinese people have planted amazing 1.16 billion mu of forests that's enough to cover Germany five times! Because of these efforts, China has become the country with the fastest-growing green areas in the world.
The forests help fight climate change by taking in carbon dioxide. They also make the air cleaner, stop soil from washing away, and provide homes for animals. The government encourages people to take part in tree planting, and millions of people join in it every year. Schools and communities also hold activities to teach young people about protecting the environment.
1. What does the underlined word "afforestation" mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Cutting down trees.
B. Studying grassland growth.
C. Protecting old forests.
D. Planting trees in new areas.
2. What can we infer from Zhang Liming?
A. China has slowed down its efforts to plant trees.
B. Grassland coverage is more important than forests.
C. Other countries have planted more trees than China.
D. China is a leader in increasing the forest area all around the world.
3. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Other countries should learn from China.
B. Tree planting is only important for wildlife.
C. China has made great progress in planting trees.
D. China faces many challenges in forest protection.
Question: Except planting trees, what can you do to help protect trees and forests?

Ⅳ. 1-3 DDC
根据第一段“March 12th is China’s National Tree Planting Day, a special day when people across the country plant trees to protect the environment.”以及“in 2024, China completed over 100 million mu (about 66,667 square kilometres) of afforestation, which is nearly as large as Ireland”可知,文章开头用植树节引出通过植树来保护环境,并提到了中国在2024年完成了超过1亿亩的“afforestation”,故画线单词“afforestation”和植树有关。故选 D。
根据第三段“China has become the country with the fastest-growing green areas in the world”可知,中国已成为全球绿化增长最快的国家。
Question: We can pick up the rubbish in the forests.(答案不唯一,言之有理即可)
