The Amazing Trunks of African Elephants
African elephants are well-known for their long trunks. This special part is actually a long nose and a lip. For a large elephant, the trunk can be two meters long. They use their trunks to do many tasks each day. They use them to smell, and they also use them to drink. A big elephant can suck up (允吸) 7.5 liters (升) of water through its trunk at one time!
Because the weather in Africa is often very hot, these animals use their trunks to keep cool. They spray (喷洒) water on their skin and then cover it with dust to keep it safe. The trunk is also a helpful tool for them. It can pick up a small leaf or pull down a large tree branch. In deep water, they use their trunks like tubes to breathe.
Elephants are social animals. They often touch trunks to greet each other. Sometimes, a baby elephant sucks its trunk to feel happy. These smart animals can live for 70 years, but people hunt them for ivory (象牙). We must work together to protect them.

( ) 27. The word “social” in the last paragraph means “______”.
A. clever B. friendly C. strong D. lonely
( ) 28. What can we learn from the passage?

B. Elephants only use trunks to drink water.
C. African weather is always cold.
D. People protect elephants very well.

AI in School: A Great Helper for Modern Learners
Today’s students often wonder how people used to write reports or finish projects without modern technology. In the past, people had to spend hours reading books and organizing ideas by hand. Now, artificial intelligence (AI) has changed that. It makes research and writing much faster and easier than before.
What exactly is AI? You can think of it as a smart tool that creates new things from what humans have already made. It is like a puzzle — it rearranges (重新排列) many small pieces of information into a new picture. Although AI does not “think” or invent ideas like humans do, it can provide great results on many topics. It can explain difficult concepts (概念), summarize long stories, and even suggest exercises for students to practice.
AI is useful in many ways. First, it provides advice. If your writing has weak points, AI can find them and suggest better ways to write. Second, it saves time. An AI tool can turn a long article into a short summary, so you can get the main points quickly. Third, it helps with planning. You can ask AI to create a plan for your project or a study plan for your exams.
However, we must remember that AI is only a helper. It cannot replace human thinking. Just like a washing machine, AI simplifies (简化) our work, but it does not have the skills or judgment we have. We should still check facts and think carefully about the information we receive. When we use technology wisely, it becomes a powerful tool that saves our energy for more creative work. By combining human skills with technology, we can achieve much more in our studies.
( ) 29. How is AI similar to a puzzle according to the writer?
A. It finds missing information. B. It helps people think.
C. It creates a new picture. D. It solves human problems.
( ) 30. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. How to improve creative work. B. Why AI is smarter than humans.
C. Advice on using AI tools. D. How AI helps with studies.
( ) 31. Why does the writer mention a “washing machine”?
A. To explain how machines work. B. To show AI is a helper.
C. To encourage modern life. D. To compare different skills.
( ) 32. What does the writer suggest doing with AI?
A. To stop using modern machines. B. To check information carefully.
C. To let AI finish all work. D. To invent new ideas with AI.
D
Among the most famous traditional Chinese paintings, there is a very long painting of horses called One Hundred Horses. As its name suggests, One Hundred Horses shows about 100 horses in different poses (姿势). Some stand quietly, while others run, walk, drink water, play on the ground or even fight. The painting’s large size alone is enough to interest viewers. A closer look, however, may surprise you further.
To many people’s surprise, it was painted not by a Chinese artist but by an Italian named Giuseppe Castiglione. Castiglione was better known in China by his Chinese name, Lang Shining. He was born in 1688 in Milan, Italy. In 1715, he traveled to Beijing. As an experienced painter, he was invited to work as an artist in the palace. Seven years later, Emperor (皇帝) Yongzheng came to power. By then, Castiglione had already made a name for himself. He was famous for a special style that mixed Western and Chinese painting methods. In 1724, Yongzheng asked him to paint One Hundred Horses, a silk painting nearly eight meters long.
Painting on silk is no easy task. Once a mark is made, there is no going back. Castiglione first practiced on paper and planned everything carefully. Then he copied the design onto silk step by step. It took Castiglione four years to finish the painting. There is no record of how Emperor Yongzheng viewed it. But the following emperor, Qianlong, thought highly of it and called the painting a wonderful work. Castiglione skillfully mixed Western realism (现实主义) with Chinese painting skills. The trees, horses and people look true to life, yet they were all painted with a Chinese brush.
In One Hundred Horses, humans and nature live side by side in peace, and so do Eastern and Western aesthetics (美学). Perhaps this perfect balance is why Emperor Qianlong liked it so much.
( ) 33. What can we know about Castiglione from Paragraph 2?
A. He came to Beijing when he was 34 years old.
B. He was invited to the palace for his painting skills.
C. He only used traditional Chinese ways to paint.
D. He worked as a teacher in the Chinese palace.
( ) 34. Why did Emperor Qianlong like the painting so much according to the text?
A. Because it took the painter four years to finish it.
B. Because it is nearly eight meters long and very large.
C. Because it shows a wonderful mix of two cultures.
D. Because there are about 100 horses in different poses.
( ) 35. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. Painting→Painter→Creation→Value B. Painter→Painting→Creation→Value
C. Creation→Painting→Painter→Value D. Value→Painter→Painting→Creation
( ) 36. What’s the best title (标题) for the text?
A. One Hundred Horses: Where East Meets West
B. How to Paint on Silk: A Difficult Painting Skill
C. Giuseppe Castiglione: A Famous Italian Painter
D. Chinese Paintings: Beauty in Traditional Art

In modern society, it’s common for teenagers to be home alone. Some parents have to work late or go on business trips, leaving their kids by themselves. 37
When teenagers are home alone, they can experience a sense of independence. They learn to take care of themselves, like preparing simple meals. Instead of depending on parents to cook for them, they might make a sandwich or some noodles. 38 They can read a book or do a hobby for relaxation, wash their own clothes and finish homework without parents’ strict orders.
39 Safety is a top concern. They need to remember to lock the doors and windows to keep strangers out. If there’s an emergency, like a sudden power cut or a small fire, they have to stay calm and know how to react. Another problem is loneliness. Without the company of family members, some teenagers might feel a bit sad or scared, especially at night.
In short, teenagers being home alone has both advantages and disadvantages. It can help them grow up and become more responsible, but they also need to be careful and prepared to face possible difficulties. 40 They should offer proper guidance and make sure that children know how to deal with different situations when alone at home.
A. However, being home alone also brings some difficulties.
B. It’s also a chance for them to manage their time freely.
C. When there’s a problem, they have to face it alone.

Deepseek
On January 20, 2025, a Chinese company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This AI can do math problems, write computer codes (代码), and answer questions like the best AIs in the world. But it costs much less money to build. The team used only $5.58 million (much cheaper than other AIs) and 2,048 computer parts for two months. This shows that smart ideas are better than just spending a lot of money.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use, and people can even change it. On its first day, more than 19,000 computer experts around the world started using it. A German scientist said, “Using R1 for experiments costs only ,300.” Even a top scientist from Meta (a big U.S. company) said, “This free AI could change the world.” U.S. companies are now worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is becoming a leader in AI very fast. A report in Nature (a famous science magazine) called R1 a “big success”, showing that good ideas are more important than expensive tools.
A DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to help everyone, not just rich people.” With R1, China shows that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
