With summer just around the corner, it’s time to find some good books to read. Here are some you might like to try.
The Big Miss
The author was Tiger Woods’ coach for six years, and the book is a behind-the-scenes look into the famous golfer’s private life. One reader wrote on Amazon.com, “I’m a big Tiger fan, and I read this in one sitting. Brilliant!”
The Hunger Games
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic (世界末日后的) future. Most people are very poor. Every year, there’s a game show (called “The Hunger Games”) in which 18 teenagers are sent into the wild to battle it out until only one survives. The book has just been made into a highly successful Hollywood movie.

The Venice Experiment: A Year of Trial and Error Living Abroad
A few years ago, real-life American couple Barry and Debbie decided to escape the rat race and live in Venice for a year. This is the story of their experiences there, and it’s full of funny anecdotes (奇闻轶事) about their struggle to adapt to the Venetian lifestyle. Forests are like Earth’s green lungs — they play a vital role in keeping the planet’s ecosystem healthy. Every year, a single mature tree can absorb about 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide and release enough oxygen to support two people. Beyond regulating the air, forests are also home to over 50% of the world’s land species, from tiny insects to large mammals like gorillas and tigers. However, this precious resource is disappearing fast: according to recent data, around 10 million hectares of forests are cut down globally each year. Most of this destruction, known as deforestation, happens to get wood for furniture and paper, or to clear land for growing crops like soybeans and palm oil.
The effects of deforestation are far-reaching. Take the Amazon Rainforest, often called the “lungs of the planet,” for example. Over the past decade, deforestation there has caused the number of jaguars to drop by 20% and macaws by 30%. These animals lose their natural habitats — places where they live, breed, and find food — and many struggle to survive. Worse still, fewer trees mean less carbon dioxide is taken in, which speeds up global warming. Local Indigenous communities, who have relied on forests for food, medicine, and shelter for centuries, are also losing their way of life.
Luckily, people around the world are taking action to protect forests. More than 100 countries have set up national parks and protected areas where tree-cutting is strictly banned. Some big companies, like major paper producers, now use 80% recycled paper in their products instead of new wood. Schools are also joining in: many organize tree-planting activities and teach students how to reduce paper waste by using digital notes. Even small actions, like recycling a stack of paper or planting a sapling in the community, can help make a difference.
24. What is the main reason for deforestation according to the passage?
A. Natural disasters like fires B. Cutting trees for wood or farmland
C. Animals destroying forest areas D. Pollution from factories
25. Which of the following can we infer from the passage?
A. Jaguars and macaws have already disappeared from the Amazon.
B. Deforestation only affects animals in the Amazon Rainforest.
C. Protecting forests can slow down global warming.
D. Indigenous communities no longer need forests for survival.
26. The underlined word “habitats” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. places where animals live B. types of food animals eat
C. tools animals use to hunt D. diseases that kill animals
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Amazon Rainforest: A Precious Treasure B. Deforestation: Causes, Effects and Solutions
C. How to Reduce Paper Waste in Daily Life D. Why Forests Are Important for Animals.

An artificial intelligence (人工智能) system has shown it can save lives by warning doctors to check on patients whose heart test results show a high risk of dying. In a test with almost 16,000 patients, the AI helped reduce the total deaths by 31% among people who were at high risk.
“This is actually quite amazing,” says Eric Topol at the Scripps Research TranslationalInstitute in California. “It is quite uncommon for any drug to result in a 31% reduction in the number of deaths, and then even more unusual for a non-drug — this is just monitoring people with AI.”
Chin Lin at Texas Medical Center and his colleagues trained their AI on more than 450,000 electrocardiogram (ECG) (心电图) tests, which measure the heart’s electrical activity, along with the survival data of the ECG subjects. The AI learned to produce a percentile (百分位) score representing each patient’s risk of death, whose score in the 95th percentile or higher would be considered high risk.
The researchers then tested the AI warning system with 39 doctors at two different hospitals. As nurses transmitted each new patient’s ECG tests to a computer server, the AI system would analyse the results and warn doctors if it identified someone as being high risk. In addition to reducing the risk of death from all causes, the AI system also reduced the death rate from heart issues in high-risk patients by more than 90%.
Lin and his colleagues say the AI warnings may help focus attention on the highest risk group. During the research, doctors usually followed up warnings with more tests and treatment. The system is already being used across 14 hospitals in Texas. “This can be put into effect in every hospital around the world,” says Topol. “It should be the standard of care when you see such a significant benefit.”
28. What made the AI system stand out in the test?
A. Its speed in analyzing ECG tests.
B. Its function of testing heart diseases.
C. Its application in hospitals nationwide.
D. Its ability to reduce deaths without drugs.
29. What could the AI system do according to paragraph 3?
A. Train doctors and nurses. B. Record patients’ survival data.
C. Analyse each patient’s risk of cancer. D. Provide patients’ death-risk percentiles.
30. What did the doctors tend to do after receiving AI warnings?
A. Identify high-risk patients. B. Transmit the data.
C. Conduct further tests and treatment. D. Study the results of tests.
31. What is Topol’s attitude to the AI system?
A. Confident. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. However, it’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn when walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr.Norberg says. In her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
32. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A. They must run long distances. B. They are qualified for the marathon.
C. They have to follow special rules. D. They are good at swinging their legs.
33. What advantage does race walking have over running?
A. It’s more popular at the Olympics. B. It’s less challenging physically.
C. It’s more effective in body building. D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
34. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A. Getting experts’ opinions. B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach. D. Doing regular exercises.
35. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Running VS. Race Walking: Which Burns More Calories?
B. Race Walking: Fitness Benefits and Form Challenges
C. Avoiding Injuries: Why Race Walking Might be safer Than Running?
D. The Unusual Feature of Race Walking

As soon as the bell rang for the end of school, I hurried to the library to join the Writing Club, where Miss Lisa asked us to work with critique partners (互评搭档) and give helpful feedback (反馈) to each other.
My critique partner was Penny. We sat across from each other and exchanged our stories. I was nervous because I was good at creating story ideas but struggled with spelling, grammar, and punctuation (标点). Unlike me, Penny always did perfectly in these areas. I read her story straight through and found it incredible — it was about a stray dog named Sunny. “Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions. It’s perfect!” “Yours too,” she mumbled. She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back.
Soon Miss Lisa declared time was up and left. Penny rushed out in such a hurry that her things fell out of her backpack. She quickly picked them up. I found a book under the table titled Sunny the Brave. After reading the description on the back, I realized its plot was exactly the same as Penny’s story — She had copied the idea!
It wasn’t fair. I decided to tell Miss Lisa later. Outside school, I saw Penny sitting on a bench. I walked over and gave her the book only to find her crying. All of a sudden, I wasn’t angry anymore. I remembered that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. But what should I say? Then her mom arrived. I only heard her whisper “Thanks,” before she hurried off.
I kept thinking about Penny and her story as I walked home. I decided to ask Mom what I should do. I found her in the kitchen making dinner with Dad. Watching them prepare food together, it occurred to me that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. With Dad’s attention to detail and Mom’s sense of adventure, their dinners turned out delicious. That gave me an idea to suggest to Penny.

【原文】W: Hello, everyone. I’m the director of The Jeeves School, and this morning I’m going to go through some information to help you all make sure your time here goes well.
So, first of all, lateness. We have quite a strict policy. If you are more than 10 minutes late, we ask you to wait until the break to join the class, so the rest of the class can work better. The break tends to be around 10:30, and half an hour later, you can join the second class. There’s a coffee machine in the student common room downstairs. But the machine has a habit of breaking down, so if you find it’s not working, please tell Jenny at the reception desk. There are toilets on the second floor and the ground floor. These are regularly cleaned so we don’t tend to have any problems with them.
As well as the courses, we have a great social program. Activities are open to everyone, and they have a habit of filling up quickly, so check the noticeboard in the common room for new events. You can book with Kit, our social program organizer. And finally, as a rule, we have a free barbeque on the first Friday of every month. That’s all from me. Any questions?

The Hunger Games
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic (世界末日后的) future. Most people are very poor. Every year, there’s a game show (called “The Hunger Games”) in which 18 teenagers are sent into the wild to battle it out until only one survives. The book has just been made into a highly successful Hollywood movie.

C
A. Confident. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
【答案】28. D 29. D 30. C 31. A

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. B

Dear Jenny,
I’m writing to share my opinion on the two speech topics for our class English speech contest. From my perspective, “The Beauty of Art” is a more favorable one.
As is known to all, art plays a vital role in our life. It helps us discover the beauty around us, develop good taste and enrich our spiritual world. Besides, talking about art allows us to share our experiences in painting, music or calligraphy, making our speeches more vivid and meaningful. I believe this topic can help all students feel the power of art.
Hopefully, my suggestion will be taken into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version 2:

I’m writing to express my idea about the speech contest topics provided by you. I prefer “The Charm of Sports” to “The Beauty of Art”.
Firstly, sports are closely related to our daily life and have great charm. Additionally, every student has their own sports experiences, such as playing basketball, running or swimming, which can make our speeches more real and touching. 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker.

Miss Lisa was more than happy to agree with our idea.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】【参考范文】
At school the next morning, I found Penny at her locker. She lowered her head in shame, obviously scared that I would let out her secret and expose her mistake. Instead of blaming or laughing at her, I approached gently and comforted her patiently, telling her that I totally understood her pressure and anxiety about writing. I proposed that we team up and make up for each other’s weaknesses — I could create creative and interesting story ideas while she polished spelling, grammar and punctuation carefully. Deeply moved and regretful, Penny apologized sincerely and promised never to copy others’ ideas again. Then we made up our minds to go to Miss Lisa and explain the whole thing honestly.
Miss Lisa was more than happy to agree with our idea. She smiled warmly and praised us for learning the true meaning of helpful feedback and cooperation. My heart was filled with relief and joy, for I had never expected such a warm response. From then on, we became perfect and close partners. I focused on creative writing while Penny corrected all the language details carefully. Our writing skills improved greatly and we both grew confident and brave. This unforgettable experience taught us that honesty, kindness and cooperation are the most valuable lessons we could ever learn in the writing club.
