You shouldn’t need a PowerPoint presentation to explain why getting a cat is a great idea, but Shana, a little girl, wasn’t taking any chances. She really, really wanted her parents to adopt a kitty, and she was willing to go to great lengths to convince them! So, she put together a very professional and educational slideshow (幻灯片) with all the related facts. Her arguments were pretty solid!
For example, Shana explained that she wasn’t the only one in the family who would benefit from getting a kitty. All her brothers and sisters wanted one, too! Another point was her claim that “It would be so cute, please.” Additionally, she reminded her parents that they still owed her one. “Please, seriously you promised me a hamster (仓鼠) five years ago but that never happened, just let me have this,” the child wrote. She also noted that pets can help relieve stress, which was a crucially persuasive point.
Throughout the PowerPoint, the little girl made several promises to take full responsibility for the cat’s health and well-being. She assured her parents that she had done her homework on animal care, and she understood what she was signing up for.
Dad Christopher Doyle thought that his daughter’s PowerPoint on adopting a cat was pretty clever. In fact, he thought that the little girl’s determination was so cute, he just had to post her presentation on social media.
Would this PowerPoint be enough to earn the girl a cat? In case you’re wondering, it worked! Dad shared in a later post that the family was filling out adoption paperwork in order to bring home a kitty. Of course, this was bound to happen. After all, who could refuse such a well-researched PowerPoint? The family ended up adopting a rescue kitty, whom the kids named Oliver.
4. What do the underlined words “go to great lengths” mean in paragraph 1?
A. Spare no effort. B. Go to extremes.
C. Waste a lot of time. D. Change her mind.
5. Which is the key point used by Shana to persuade her parents?
A. She has learned enough about animal care.
B. All the family members are dying for a cat.
C. Raising pets like cats helps reduce pressure.
D. Her parents did owe her one pet in the past.
6. How did Doyle feel about his daughter’s slideshow?
A. Awkward. B. Appreciative. C. Surprised. D. Curious.
7. What can we learn from Shana’s story?
A. Perseverance changed parents’ minds. B. Creative solutions help to settle problems.
C. Parents should keep promises to kids. D. A road to success is full of ups and downs.

Experts have gained deeper insight into why people cannot help dancing to music. New research suggests the urge to dance to the beat, what some scientists call the “groove experience”, depends on the music’s degree of syncopation (切分节奏), a feature that affects how predictable the rhythm is.
Syncopations are rhythmic patterns in which accented or unaccented beats in a melody (旋律) appear in surprising places relative to the standard beat. The more syncopation a piece of music contains, the less accurately you can guess the rhythm of the next few bars as you listen.
In a series of experiments with more than 60 participants, cognitive neuroscientist (认知神经学家) Benjamin Morillon of France’s Aix-Marseille university and his team examined how syncopation relates to the groove experience. In one test, they played 12 different melodies. The main beat was always two hertz (Hz), or roughly two events per second. But the melody’s rhythmic shifts varied so that each tune was played with three different degrees of syncopation. Participants then rated how much they wanted to dance to each track.
As Morillon and his colleagues reported in Science Advances, a medium degree of syncopation caused a strong desire to move to music. In contrast, neither very high nor low degrees of syncopation had that same result. In other words, people didn’t particularly want to dance to an entirely predictable rhythm or a highly surprising one. “The work reveals why we cannot resist moving in line with the beat when we listen to music with an optimal level of syncopation,” says Benoit Bardy, a movement-science researcher at the university of Montpellier in France. Bardy, who was not involved in the new study, describes it as “a very innovative piece of science”.
In addition, the “groove experience” seems to be all about finding the music’s underlying beats, the study shows. When a group of participants had to tap their fingers to imagined dance steps, they did so almost exclusively to the basic 2-Hz beat, not to the melody’s rhythm, which represents a primary area of interest for forthcoming research.
8. What determines people’s desire to dance to music?
A. Standard beats.
B. Imagined dance steps.
C. Accurate melodies.
D. Surprising rhythmic patterns.
9. What did participants do in the experiment?
A. Predict next rhythm in songs.
B. Analyze music’s beat patterns.
C. Measure their desire to move.
D. Create new rhythmic melodies.
10. What does the underlined word “optimal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Advanced. B. Average.
C. Extreme. D. Unusual.
11. What will the follow-up study focus on?
A. How composers create syncopated music.
B. How the brain reacts to basic music beats.
C. How to comprehend the music’s underlying meaning.
D. How to improve the “groove experience” in the future.

Climate change is causing rising temperatures and extreme weather events. What if there were a way to cool Earth by reflecting the Sun?
In 2022, the US company Make Sunsets released two weather balloons above Baja California in Mexico. These balloons, when reaching a certain height, burst open, spreading sulfur dioxide particles (二氧化硫颗粒) across the sky, thus creating a bright mist in the sky that reflects sunlight. A similar weather balloon test flight was launched in the UK. This method belongs to solar geoengineering, a process of bouncing sunlight back into space. Other approaches include installing reflectors on satellites, though these are more technically complex.
In a world of rising temperatures, dimming the Sun is an immediate way to cool the planet. Luke Iseman, the founder of Make Sunsets, claims that without solar geoengineering there are no other realistic choices to stay below 2℃, beyond which many effects of climate change will be irreversible (不可逆转). Studies have confirmed its effectiveness: a 2022 Yale study suggested reflecting sunlight could slow sea-level rise and help restore polar ice. Financially, it is also more possible: the estimated annual cost is around $10 billion, far lower than the trillions of dollars required for a full global transition to renewable energy.
However, over 380 scientists worldwide have opposed the technology. Some warn that interfering with the weather may disrupt rainfall patterns, triggering droughts in some regions and floods in others. Since its effects are not limited to participating nations, conflicts between countries could arise. Additionally, experts argue that it might encourage polluters to continue burning fossil fuels. There is also concern about long-term maintenance: if solar geoengineering is stopped suddenly, Earth could face a sharp temperature surge, severely harming wildlife.
Given its potential benefits and significant risks, solar geoengineering requires cautious evaluation. Governments, scientists, and global organizations should cooperate to conduct thorough research, assess its long-term impacts, and establish strict regulatory frameworks before any large-scale implementation.
12. What is the function of the balloons released by Make Sunsets?
A. To absorb sulfur dioxide particles.
B. To form a sunlight-reflecting mist.
C. To monitor extreme weather changes.
D. To help install sunlight reflectors.
13. What’s the advantage of solar geoengineering over renewable energy transition according to the text?
A. It is more affordable.
B. It is more eco-friendly.
C. It is easier to carry out.
D. It is more accessible.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 4 about solar geoengineering?
A. It may reduce the use of oil.
B. It may cause damage to satellites.
C. It mainly benefits nations involved.
D. It may affect rainfall distribution.
15. What’s the author’s attitude to dimming the Sun?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed.
C. Objective. D. Doubtful.

In February 2017, I was just emerging from a decade-long struggle with a mysterious illness that had gradually narrowed my world. ____16____ That was an online Qi Gong course.
To the untrained eye, Qi Gong may seem similar to its better-known cousin, Tai Chi, the ancient art that combines gentle movement with mental focus. ____17____ It’s even integrated into treatment plans in Chinese hospitals.
My daily practice that year brought such noticeable improvements that I set myself a reward: if I stuck with it all year, I’d head to Master Anthony’s annual training camp in Costa Rica’s cloud forest the following February.____18____ It was my first journey abroad in over a decade. I booked the trip to San Jose, where I met Master Anthony and a dozen strangers. We boarded a tiny bus and rode up winding mountain roads to “La Montana Azul” for a week-long camp.
____19____ There was no Internet or distractions here, just organic vegetarian meals shared under an open-air shelter. Forest birds sang, and my roofless room even housed a surprisingly large spider, which added a touch of unexpected adventure to the experience.
Online practice had given me slight energy movement, but that week, doing moves like Lifting the Sky, I could distinctly feel my body filling with Qi — the vital life force energy. I felt energized and joyful. That was when everything changed for me. At home, I had a successful career as a self-employed writer. ____20____ Soon after I returned, at 53, I launched my travel blog.
Dreams do come true. They’re just waiting for you to claim them.
A. And I did!
B. I long to explore the world.
C. The place was perfect for the camp.
D. Yet it’s actually energy medicine for recovery.
E. Many people turn to Tai Chi for its physical benefits.

Tom set his lunch tray (盘) on the table near his friend Jake. “Trade you a sandwich for an apple pie,” Tom said. Jake nodded, taking his apple pie out of his lunchbox. Tom noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Jake’s lunchbox.
“What’s that?” demanded Ethan, another boy in their class. Before Jake could answer, Ethan grasped the paper. He unfolded it and saw the words: “Dear Jake, I hope you have a great day. Love, Mom.” Ethan read the note in a loud voice, laughing at the note that Jake’s mother had put into the lunchbox. It seemed that he was trying to attract nearby students to glance over. Surprisingly, Ethan read the note in a low voice again, to himself. He ran his fingers across the note, with his eyes resting on the words for a second. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.
Tom grasped the paper angrily and gave it back to Jake. Ethan insisted no one wanted a note anyway. “I do,” said Jake. Tom liked getting notes too. Hearing this, Ethan burst into anger, suddenly grasping the note from Jake’s hand again. Ethan threw the note and it fell to the floor. Tom picked it up quickly and then handed it back to Jake, who placed it into his pocket right away.
When Tom wanted to argue with Ethan, Jake stopped him and whispered that Ethan didn’t live with his mother. Tom’s anger faded at once, and he suddenly connected this to how Ethan had stared at the note earlier.
Tom couldn’t stop replaying the strange way Ethan had acted in his mind. Ethan was so mean to Jake, but Tom still thought about how to help Jake and Ethan. He kept turning the problem over in his mind, wondering how to make things right. Suddenly, his eyes lit up and a smile spread across his face—he had a great idea.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. B

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“New research suggests the urge to dance to the beat, what some scientists call the ‘groove experience’, depends on the music’s degree of syncopation (切分节奏), a feature that affects how predictable the rhythm is.(新研究表明,跟着节拍跳舞的冲动——一些科学家称之为“律动体验”——取决于音乐的切分节奏程度,这是一种影响节奏可预测性的特征。)”可知,跟着音乐跳舞的欲望由切分节奏决定,也就是令人意外的节奏模式。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Participants then rated how much they wanted to dance to each track.(随后参与者对自己跟着每一首曲子跳舞的欲望程度进行评分。)”可知,实验中参与者评估了自己跟着音乐舞动的欲望。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“As Morillon and his colleagues reported in Science Advances, a medium degree of syncopation caused a strong desire to move to music. In contrast, neither very high nor low degrees of syncopation had that same result.(正如莫里昂及其同事在《科学进展》上发表的研究所示,中等程度的切分节奏会让人产生强烈的随音乐舞动的欲望。相比之下,切分音程度过高或过低都没有同样的效果。)”可知,人们喜欢跟着切分音始终的音乐舞动,由此猜测optimal在这里表示“适中的”,与Average含义相近。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“When a group of participants had to tap their fingers to imagined dance steps, they did so almost exclusively to the basic 2-Hz beat, not to the melody’s rhythm, which represents a primary area of interest for forthcoming research.(当一组参与者跟着想象的舞步用手指敲击时,他们几乎只跟着基础的2赫兹节拍敲击,而非旋律的节奏,这是后续研究的核心关注点。)”可知,后续研究将关注大脑对基本音乐节拍的反应。故选B。

A. Supportive. B. Opposed.
C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C

【答案】
Dear Alex,
I’m writing to share with you the “Art Comes to Campus” activity at our school last week. It was organized by the city art museum to bring art closer to the students.
I was really impressed by the remarkable paintings and intricate sculptures, which provided a chance for me to appreciate the artistic techniques behind these works. What excited me most was that I even tried my hand at some simple sketching!
The activity not only refined my taste in art, but inspired me to look at the world through an artist’s eyes. I’d love to hear if you have participated in similar events at your school. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
On the bus back home, Tom talked with Jake about what had happened during lunchtime. “Ethan was so mean to you. Why?” Tom shook his head and dropped his voice to a whisper. Knowing Ethan never got notes, Tom felt sorry for Ethan’s experience. Then he leaned closer to Jake, his voice soft with hope, sharing his idea — giving everyone a lunch note, even Ethan. Hearing this, Jake’s face brightened, and he nodded, saying, “Yeah, I think it could really help, especially with Ethan — it might make him feel like he belongs. All night long, they worked on the plan, folding paper, writing warm messages, and taking extra care with the note for Ethan.
The next lunchtime, Tom hurried to the cafeteria with some extra handwritten notes. He set 23 named notes on the first table. Each piece of paper had the name of a classmate on it. Delightedly, Tom watched as Ethan picked up the note with his name on it. Ethan unfolded the note, his hands shaking slightly. A rare smile appeared on Ethan’s face as he read the simple, kind words. He didn’t expect it. And for a moment, he felt like someone cared. Jake nodded at Tom in approval and gave him a thumbs-up. At the same time, Ethan came up to them with his tuna salad and joined them. It was a sweet reminder that little gestures could light up a whole lunch.
