Traditional Chinese works of art tell amazing stories about our culture and people. These beautiful art forms show the wisdom and creativity that have been passed on through many centuries.
Leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣) from Guizhou Province is one of China’s most special traditional works of art. This art form first appeared during the Song Dynasty. Local people use it to create beautiful artwork and even send messages to each other.
Yang Li, a master of leaf-vein embroidery, has spent her whole life learning and teaching the skill. Making leaf-vein embroidery is very difficult. First, artists must carefully choose the best leaves from special plants in the mountains. Then they dry the leaves for about 20 days until the leaves become soft and very fragile. Finally, they design beautiful patterns (图案) on the leaves and embroider (绣) them with colourful threads (线). “Each piece takes weeks to complete,” Yang Li said. “The leaves break easily, so we can’t make even one small mistake.”
This traditional art faces serious challenges today. Yang Li said that in the last ten years, only about 20 people in her city could complete the whole leaf-embroidery process (过程) by themselves. “Young people like modern jobs with better pay,” she said sadly. “But I believe this beautiful art should not die away. In my lifetime, I must pass on this craft (手工艺).”
To save this tradition, Yang Li works very hard to teach others. She opened a factory in 2011 and trained more than 500 women, including many from poor areas. In 2022, she also started using social media (社交媒体) to show young people how amazing leaf-vein embroidery is. Her student Yang Xinyu helps her make short videos online. “Leaf-vein embroidery is a real treasure,” Yang Xinyu said, “I want to help keep it alive.”

A. By asking a question. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving numbers. D. By expressing an opinion.

13. What does the underlined word “fragile” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. beautiful and colourful B. strong and lasting
C. easy to break D. expensive and valuable
14. Why does leaf-vein embroidery face challenges today?

B. Because young people can’t make much money from this traditional job.
C. Because the government doesn’t support traditional arts.
D. Because there are no good teachers to teach young people.
15. What is the purpose of the text?

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good sleep every night. You are not able to do your best unless you sleep well. Most experts agree that our bodies need eight hours of sleep every night, and this has been accepted as common knowledge for a long time. ____16____
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students. ___17___ While most of them go to bed and get up at regular times, many are now waking up at night. ____18____ They’re scared of missing messages or fun group chats. But every time they do this, their deep sleep—the kind that repairs the body and brain—gets broken like a movie suddenly stopped. ___19___ The study found something even worse: Teens who check social media at night are three times more likely to feel sad or worried compared to those who sleep through the night.
So, I’d like to ask you to be responsible for yourself. Take control! Turn off your mobile phones and computers at night. Don’t worry about missing messages. ____20____ I give you my word that you won’t miss anything important.

A Wonderful Trip to Guilin
Have you ever been to Guilin? Well, I’ve been there. Traveling is truly wonderful. It opens our mind, helps us make new friends, and lets us experience different cultures. These experiences enrich our life greatly.
Last summer, I took a trip to Guilin with my parents. We went boating on the Li River and enjoyed the beautiful green mountains. We visited the Reed Flute Cave, which is full of colorful rocks. The local food, Guilin rice noodles, was so delicious!
This trip taught me that seeing is believing. The beauty of nature and the warmth of local people touched my heart. I learned to value different lifestyles and became more open-minded. I hope to travel more in the future.
