What Are Character's Motives?
Definition
Character's motives are the reasons why a character behaves in a certain way.
人物动机是指角色以某种方式行为的原因。
理解人物动机帮助我们更好地理解故事中角色的行为。
Key Question:
Why does the character do that?
Tip: Look for words like
"because", "to", "want to" in the text.

What is Monitoring & Clarifying?
When you are not clear about something while reading, you can stop and try to make it clear. 阅读时遇到不理解的内容,停下来并尝试弄清楚。

Stop and ask yourself:
"What don't I understand?"
Example: What does "embroideries" mean? I don't know this word!

Do something to make it clear:
Find clues!
• Re-read the text

• Read ahead for more clues

Remember: Good readers always monitor their understanding while reading. When something is unclear, they don't just skip it — they use strategies to figure it out!

Text
Qipao is a traditional dress for Chinese women. There are beautiful embroideries on it. For example, you can see animal and flower embroideries on a qipao.

The qipao is part of Chinese culture. The Manchu women first wore qipao in the Qing Dynasty. In the 1920s, it became a fashion in Shanghai and then quickly became popular in other parts of China. Now, Chinese women wear qipaos at special events like weddings. The newly-married wife looks beautiful in qipao and the newly-married husband is happy to see that.
