一、完形填空
Not long ago, my daughter’s favourite leather shoes were cut by a knife. She cried. I took the shoes to a shoemaker to get them repaired.
The young apprentice (学徒) took a look at the cuts quickly and said, “There is 1 I can do but change the uppers.”
His master looked at them and said to me, “If you 2 me, I will add more cuts to both of the shoes on purpose for special style.”
I didn’t fully understand him, but I decided to leave the shoes.
Two days later, I went there to get the shoes. At the first sight I found there were indeed five or six 3 on each shoe, but all of them were covered by soft red leather sewn with thick thread. The shoes looked more 4 and interesting than ever. I couldn’t stop praising the master for his skill.
Another time, my wife’s blouse had an opening on the back. My wife checked it carefully, and then said, “I’ll repair it myself.”
Three days went past, and I was very surprised to see it again: the 5 was sewn up by thin and white thread and it looked like an ice crystal. She 6 made a lovely snowman and a wooden house on the blouse. I said with praise, “It’s just as beautiful as a piece of art.”
“I learned from the master. Patches can be 7 to look perfect.” replied my wife.
Her words taught me even more. Perfection is 8 to achieve in everything; patches are unavoidable; so is human life, which will appear in the form of wounds, 9 or disease. Since you can’t change that, all you can do and have to do is to cover the wound with patches and try your best to make a most beautiful flower on the wound, and that is what life teaches us. Once you 10 it, you can enjoy your life better.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of Xu Beihong’s birth. Born in 1895 in Jiangsu province, Xu played an important role (作用) in modern Chinese art.
Xu started learning Chinese painting at age 9. In 1919, he went to Paris to study sketching (素描) and learned about Western art. He worked hard to mix Chinese and Western art styles. In Meeting of Forces in Tokyo (会师东京), painted in 1943, the artist shows a group of lions that stand for China and other countries fighting against fascism. In the background, a rising red sun shows Xu’s strong belief in winning the World Anti-Fascist War.
Besides being a painter, Xu was also an art educator. He wanted his students to be creative (有创造力的) and love beauty. It was eleven o’clock at night. A large woman was walking towards home. She had a large purse with everything but money. It hung right behind her shoulder. A boy ran up and tried to snatch her purse. The large woman simply turned around, caught the boy by his shirt, and shook him until his teeth rattled.
After that, the woman asked, “Boy, don’t you feel ashamed of yourself?”
“I’m sorry,” whispered the boy.
“What did you want to do it for? Your face is dirty. Nobody at home told you to wash your face?”
The boy shook his head.
“Then,” the woman shouted, “it will get washed this evening. You are going to remember Mrs. Jones!” She dragged the frightened boy behind her and got to her door.
“Are you taking me to the police?” The boy asked.
‘‘Not with that face! Have you been home to eat yet?”
“There’s nobody at my house.”
“Then we’ll eat,” said Mrs. Jones. “I believe you’re hungry, so you tried to steal.”
“I wanted a pair of leather shoes,” said the boy.
“Well, you didn’t have to snatch my purse to get things you want. Besides, there’s little money in it.”
There was a long silence. After he washed his face and turned around, wondering what to do next, he saw the door open. He could run, run, run and run!

When they finished eating, she got up. ‘‘Now here, take this ten dollars and buy your shoes. Next time, don’t snatch my purse, nor anyone else’s — shoes got in bad ways will burn your feet!”

Since this term, at Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, there have been big changes both for students and teachers. These changes happened because AI tools were used.
By using AI to create personalized (个性化的) exercises and exams, teachers at the school can change their teaching methods in time to suit each student’s needs and abilities.
After students finish studying a unit, teachers use AI to pick different questions from an online database (数据库) that includes different kinds of after-school materials. This helps create a special set of exercises for the unit, helping students improve their knowledge as soon as possible. These exercises are then printed on paper.
“With this special learning material created by AI, we don’t need to carry all the heavy exercise books any more. I’m really happy with these changes.” said the 14-year-old He Liyan.
Students answer the exercise questions on answer sheets first. After that, teachers collect these sheets, scan them into an AI system for grading. The AI creates numbers and pictures that help teachers understand each student’s performance as well as how the whole class is doing overall.
“Our teacher no longer explains all the questions one by one. Instead, he or she looks at the common mistakes and provides one-on-one help for every one of us,” said the 15-year-old Wang Dinghan.
What’s more, students can get special error exercises or homework created by AI depending on their performance in former exams.
“The homework is all about what I got wrong before, so I don’t need to practise over and over again what I already understand,” said he.
“I used to have a notebook copying my mistakes so that I can study them,” said Yu Zifu, 15. “But now, AI has done this for me! How useful AI is! It really helps me a lot during my study.”
22.Why does the school in Yangzhou use AI?
A.To make teaching more enjoyable for teachers.
B.To reduce the amount of homework for students.
C.To make students’ exercise books much lighter.
D.To improve learning with personalized education.
23.About using the AI system, what can we learn from the students’ words?
A.Teachers explain questions more carefully.
B.Teachers offer one-on-one help to students.
C.Students can copy their mistakes more clearly.
D.Students need to practise many times every day.
24.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.AI helps students a lot in studying. B.AI brings great fun for students.
C.AI frees students from homework. D.AI changes the way of their life.

七、任务型阅读
阅读下面的短文,用英语回答问题,并将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。
When I was in college, I took English literature (文学) classes. Every month, we read and discussed a classic novel. The books had different themes, but we always asked the same question: What did the writer want people to get from the story?
For the first few months, I kept wondering: If a writer wants to express a message, why not do it directly? Why did Ernest Hemingway, for example, write about an old man fighting a big fish? Didn’t he just want to tell people to keep going when things get hard?
The more I read, the more I understood why. Great writers don’t tell; they show. Nobody likes a lecture (讲座). Just think about how you feel when your parents tell you not to waste money on blind boxes. But everybody enjoys a good story. While discussing a story, we uncover its deeper meanings. A good story makes a book a classic.
After all these years of editing (编辑) work, I’ve become a better writer. In many of my articles, I chose to “show” rather than “tell.” For example, I didn’t directly tell you to exercise more. Instead, I shared an experience that pushed me to change some habits.
Classic novels have taught me many other lessons. I’ve picked up lots of useful words. I’ve also learned to write with my readers in mind. You can also read to write better. Walk into a great “castle” (城堡) and find out what makes it great. Over time, you’ll be ready to build a great “castle” of your own.
56.What question did the writer ask after finishing every classic novel?
57.What has the writer learned by reading classic novels? (Give at least 2 points.)
58.If you are in a book “castle”, which book will you choose? Give the name of the book and explain your reason.
