Yunnan Dali Tie-Dye (扎染)
There is a traditional handmade cloth dyeing art from Dali, Yunnan. Known as “Za Ran” in Chinese, it is a way of creating beautiful patterns by preventing parts of the cloth from absorbing dye.
History
With a history of over 1,000 years, it has been passed down by Bai families. Once used for colorful clothes, it’s now part of China’s cultural heritage (遗产).
Colors & Patterns
Fold the cloth and tie it tightly. Put it into a bowl of natural blue dye, then untie it to see the white designs. You can see natural blue and white (where it is tied). The blue stays bright for long. Popular designs like flowers, birds, fish, and clouds are inspired by nature and Dali’s life.
Tie-Dye Tools and Steps
Tools: White cotton cloth, string, tweezers (镊子), a big bowl, indigo (靛蓝色) dye, gloves, a table, and a brush.
Steps: Think of a pattern. Fold and tie the cloth. Dip it in dye-it turns blue in the air. Hang it to change color. Repeat for darker blue. Cut, wash and dry. Unfold to see your design!
Dali tie-dye is famous all over China! Tourists love buying scarves, bags, and clothes made with it. In Dali Ancient Town, you can even try making your own. Tie-dye is more than art—it’s a living part of Yunnan’s culture.
