Text 1
M: Mary, how did you build such a large vocabulary? I study word lists every day, but it doesn’t seem to be working.
W: You should try a different approach. Change your mindset, learn words in context together with grammar, and read more instead of just focusing on lists.
Text 2
M: I’m thinking of getting a robot to help with housework. It will surely lighten your load.
W: Sounds like a good idea. But can’t you help do housework to lighten my burden as well?
M: Oh, you know, I’m always busy with my work.
Text 3
M: Lucy, this Thai mango sticky rice are sweet and creamy.
W: My mum bought it from Bangkok. I’m afraid the smell might bother others in the classroom so I brought it here to share with you. Just eat more. Many students are still lining up for food. Let’s wait until the crowd thins out.
Text 4
M: We need to finalize the topic for next week’s workshop.
W: How about focusing on team building? We can invite an expert.
M: Good idea. Let’s confirm the time and send out invitations.
Text 5
M: At least we’re safe inside the car. The rain will stop soon, and help will come.
W: I’m scared. What if nobody finds us?
M: They will. Let’s just stay calm and save our phone battery. Want to tell me your favorite childhood memory?
Text 6
W: David, I was absent yesterday to be with my mother at the hospital. What did we learn in literature class?
M: We analysed the poem Dream by Langston Hughes. We need to write an essay about it and it’s due before this Friday’s class .
W: So I must finish it tonight because I will be very busy tomorrow. What is the poem about?
M: It tells us to hold fast to our dreams.
W: That’s meaningful. My brother is out of work and feels down. I want to share it with him.
Text 7
W: I’ve been staring at a blank page for days. My fans have been pushing me to write a new story, but I have no inspiration at all.
M: Maybe you need a break. Why not travel? Real life inspires stories.
W: That sounds perfect. I’ve been stuck in my head too long.
M: I actually have a few days off school starting tomorrow. If you want, I can go with you.
W: Really? That would be great!
M: How about an ancient town? Or the countryside?
W: They’re nice choices for my next story, but this time I want to set the scene along the coast.
M: So we have to go to the neighbouring city. We can take the train.
W: Good idea. I’ll check the schedule tonight.

M: No. We held a class meeting today, where our teacher screened short films about our parents’ hard work. When I watched it, I felt so sorry for Mum and Dad.
W: I know they’re really tired.
M: I’ve been so selfish. Last week, I got angry with Mum just because she kept urging me to put down my phone and focus on study. I’m ashamed of what I did to her. I should be more understanding.
W: I get it. I’ve also been lazy sometimes. I seldom help around the house.
M: I want to change. I’ll study hard, listen to them, and not be willful anymore.

W: Good idea! And we can also help Mum cook dinner.
Text 10
M: Welcome to our summer camp, everyone! I’m glad we gather here to start this wonderful journey together. First, I will give a brief introduction to our arrangements. This summer camp focuses on teamwork, self-exploration and friendship. We have prepared various interesting activities to help us step out of our comfort zones and enrich our holiday life. Our slogan is “Grow together, shine together.” Next, we will kick off our team-building with a warm game called Guess Who. It is a classic game fit for our campfire atmosphere and great for shy or new members. Each person sticks a note with a famous person or an object on the forehead. You can only ask yes-or-no questions to guess your identity. If the other person can’t get the right answer, you can use your hands or expressions to give some clues, but no describing in words. The game ends when everyone finds out their assigned role. After the game, we will divide 20 members into four groups. Each group needs to elect a group leader to manage group matters. Let’s enjoy our first activity and make new friends!

If your yard is tiny, Jordan Karambelas has a suggestion for growing food organically: a goodlooking aquaponics (鱼菜共生) system that uses recycled water enriched by fish waste to water vegetables planted above.
Jordan Karambelas, a junior at Mira Costa High School, started a Permaculture (永续栽培) Club at the school this year to make her fellow students more aware of suitable ways to grow food, which is kind to the environment.
Her work was inspired by Mike Garcia, who has spent many years working on water conservation and recycling methods. With Garcia’s help, they completed the project in just a weekend, building a handsome two-tiered (双层的) ,4-by-8-foot redwood structure that would easily fit in a tiny yard. Many of the materials were donated, Karambelas said, but it would have cost her about $1,500 to build the structure at full price. The materials included 26 redwood boards, a PVC pipe, 40 small goldfish and a pump (泵).
The lower box is filled with water and the little fish. Garcia helped set up the pump so that the water could be delivered to the planting boxes above. The runoff goes back into the fish tank, keeping the water full of air. If the water level gets too low in the fish tank, the pump automatically draws from the city water.
So far the student response has been positive, Karambelas said, and she is hoping it creates enough interest to increase membership in her new club next year.
Karambelas has big plans to rebuild the broken greenhouse and abandoned raised beds in the courtyard and replant them all using recycled water. This summer will be the test to see how much water her aquaponics system requires, but she plans to visit frequently and hopefully expects good organic products.
24. Why did Karambelas start the club?
A. To make good use of her yard. B. To show a newly-made system.
C. To promote an eco-friendly idea. D. To provide food growing places.
25. What is the feature of Karambelas’s system?
A. Space-saving. B. Time-wasting.
C. Outdated. D. Profitable.
26. What can the pump do in the system?
A. Send waste into the city water. B. Draw air from the planting boxes.
C. Push water to the planting boxes. D. Get fresh water out of the city water.
27. Which words can best describe Karambelas?
A. Modest and brave. B. Loyal and funny.
C. Curious and honest. D. Ambitious and positive.

As the planet warms up and oceans rise, extreme weather events are becoming the norm. Getting notified in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death. Now AI can help. Two studies published in the journal Nature described the benefit of two AI models that could improve weather forecasting.
The first AI-based system, developed by the Huawei Cloud team, is known as Pangu-Weather. It was capable of predicting global weather a week in advance. Before it came out, most countries relied on mathematical weather prediction models, which use math formulas to create computer models of the atmosphere and oceans for predicting future weather. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather model is deeply trained with the help of 39-year global weather data, preparing it to forecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed. When compared to the mathematical weather prediction method, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times faster and no less accurate. Pangu-Weather also contains a 3D model, unlike past AI forecasting systems, that allows it to record atmospheric states at different pressure levels to further increase its accuracy.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5 — 7 days in advance. However, it can’t forecast precipitation (降水). As precipitation prediction is vital for extreme weather forecasting, a second Nature model, NowcastNet, fills this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hours ahead, helping meteorologists (气象学家) study weather patterns in real-time more effectively.
NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance. 62 meteorologists from China tested NowcastNet and ranked it first, out of four other leading weather forecasting methods, in reliably predicting heavy rain, which it did 71 percent of the time.
While generative AI models have good prospects in weather forecasting, experts point out that replacing existing systems has many challenges. However, in 5 — 10 years, these models may surprise us.
28. What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Difference. B. Relationship.
C. Balance. D. Comparison.
29. Which of the following best describes Pangu-Weather?
A. Data-driven. B. Multi-functional.
C. Theory-based. D. Human-operated.
30. What is an advantage of NowcastNet?
A. It reduces radar errors on a large scale.
B. It outperforms any other weather model.
C. It predicts downpours with high accuracy.
D. It covers diverse regions around the globe.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The impacts of climate change on extreme weather events.
B. The introduction to high-tech weather-forecasting models.
C. The challenges in using generative AI in weather forecasting.
D. The explanation of new measures to protect the environment.

From taking quick shots for social media with a smartphone to patiently waiting for the perfect street moment with a film camera, photography has become part of everyday life. However, there is a common misunderstanding that mobile photography, compared to film photography, reduces creation to a shallow form of photographic note-taking rather than true art. This belief misses a core fact: these two media represent different ways of seeing and creating.
Psychology research offers insights into this. Professor Robert Epstein from Harvard University’s Visual Cognition Lab notes, “When we take photos with a phone, our brain is in a ‘rapid capture’ mode; whereas with a film camera, it enters a ‘deliberate composition’ state.” Functional MRI (核磁共振) studies have shown that when using a smartphone, areas of the brain linked to quick decision-making are more active. In contrast, when using a film camera, the networks related to sense of beauty and precise hand control show stronger connectivity.
Photography educator David Yorke explains: “With a film camera, you must think through everything before taking the picture — composition, exposure, timing. This forces you to slow down and truly learn to ‘see’.” However, it does not mean that mobile photography cannot produce true art. An experiment in a journal of visual research found that mobile users take an average of 15 times more photos per day than film users. This frequent practice enhances their ability to capture fleeting (转瞬即逝的) moments. Documentary photographer Marina Chen shares this view: “Smartphones have made photography accessible to everyone. Sometimes, the energy in these moments is more valuable than carefully arranged shots.”
A truly mature photographer understands that artistic vision requires both: the quick response to the present and the discipline to compose with care. Mobile photography and film photography do not replace each other. Together, they enrich our visual expression and expand our capacity to see the world with clarity and imagination.
32. What is a common misunderstanding about mobile photography?
A. It lacks artistic depth. B. It departs from daily life.
C. It misses digital creativity. D. It blocks factual recording.
33. What can we learn about film and mobile photography from paragraph 2?
A. They need professional insight.
B. They depend on instant capture.
C. They involve distinct mental processes.
D. They reflect different controlling behaviors.
34. What ability does film photography develop according to David Yorke?
A. Visual sensitivity. B. Mindful observation.
C. Decisive response. D. Emotional engagement.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Brain Science Behind Photography
B. Beyond the Shallow, Reclaiming the Art
C. A Scientific Guide to Better Photography
D. Two Modes of Imaging, One Art of Creating

根据第二段中的“When we take photos with a phone, our brain is in a‘rapid capture’mode; whereas with a film camera, it enters a‘deliberate composition’state. Functional MRI (核磁共振) studies have shown that when using a smartphone, areas of the brain linked to quick decision-making are more active. In contrast, when using a film camera, the networks related to sense of beauty and precise hand control show stronger connectivity.(当我们用手机拍照时,大脑处于‘快速捕捉’模式;而用胶片相机时,大脑会进入‘刻意构图’状态。功能磁共振成像(FMRI)研究表明,使用智能手机拍照时,大脑中与快速决策相关的区域更为活跃。相比之下,使用胶片相机时,与美感及精准手部控制相关的神经网络连接性更强。)”可知,手机摄影和胶片摄影涉及截然不同的心理过程。故选C项。
34. B 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“With a film camera, you must think through everything before taking the picture — composition, exposure, timing. This forces you to slow down and truly learn to ‘see’.(用胶片相机拍照时,你必须在按下快门前进⾏周全考虑——构图、曝光、时机。
In just over a month, Australia will start a social media ban (禁令). From December 10, people under 16 will only be able to see public content on platforms (平台) such as Facebook and TikTok, and they will not be allowed to have their own accounts. 36 But many parents worry about how teens will respond.
My research shows social and digital media use is already a major source of family conflict. Young people often pressure parents for devices or certain apps to keep in touch with their friends. So a government reason for the ban is to help parents manage this problem. 37
However, we still don’t know what will happen on December 10. Some experts argue young people may get around the ban, for example with apps that hide identity (身份). This calls for solutions. 38 Because children are different, parents should act based on family values and a child’s individuality.
Even so, if teens are used to social media and suddenly it’s gone, they may feel sad or angry, and parents will have to manage the results. Social media is not only mindless scrolling (滚动屏幕). 39 Therefore, they will need other ways to stay in touch, and parents should help them keep friendships. Parents should also know that this change can be difficult.
40 So parents should explain that less time on social media can reduce endless scrolling and cyberbullying Yet the ban does not make kids 100 percent “safe” online: they may move to other spaces, and the ban covers only some platforms. So parents should keep talking about what children see and do online, help them build the ability to judge online information. Also, they need to stay interested and willing to guide their children instead of controlling everything.
A. It can help young people build connections.
B. Some safety experts and parents welcome this.
C. But there is no one right answer for every family.
D. It may be easier for them to say, “This is the law.”
E. It is sometimes hard to see eye to eye with each other.
F. Actually, young people respond better to rules when given a clear reason.
G. This is eating away at the close relationship between parents and children.

以及后文“But many parents worry about how teens will respond. 中的But可知,此空应说明有部分群体对该禁令持支持态度,与后文家长的担忧形成转折,B选项“Some safety experts and parents welcome this.
37. D 根据前文“My research shows social and digital media use is already a major source of family conflict. Young people often pressure parents for devices or certain apps to keep in touch with their friends. So a government reason for the ban is to help parents manage this problem. (我的研究表明,使用社交和数字媒体已经成为家庭冲突的主要根源。年轻人常常向父母施压,要求配备电子设备或安装特定应用程序来与朋友保持联系。因此,政府出台这项禁令的一个原因是帮助父母解决这一问题。)”可知,前文说明禁令能帮助父母解决因社交媒体引发的家庭矛盾,此空应承接该内容,说明禁令对父母的具体帮助,D选项“It may be easier for them to say, “This is the law.” (对他们来说,说“这是法律规定的”会容易得多。)”中的them指代前文的parents,且点明禁令能让父母在管教孩子时更有依据,符合语境。故选D项。
38. C 根据前文“However, we still don’t know what will happen on December 10. Some experts argue young people may get around the ban, for example with apps that hide identity (身份). This calls for solutions. (然而,我们仍不知道12月10日会发生什么。一些专家认为,年轻人可能会通过一些隐藏身份的应用程序来规避这项禁令。这就需要找到解决办法。)”以及后文“Because children are different, parents should act based on family values and a child’s individuality. (因为每个孩子都是不同的,父母应该根据家庭价值观和孩子的个性来采取行动。)”可知,前文指出需要解决年轻人规避禁令的问题,后文说明父母应根据孩子的具体情况采取行动,此空应衔接二者,说明解决该问题没有统一的办法,C选项“But there is no one right answer for every family. (但对于每个家庭来说,没有一个通用的正确答案。)”承接前文的解决办法需求,且引出后文的个性化应对方式,符合语境。故选C项。
39. A 根据前文“Even so, if teens are used to social media and suddenly it’s gone, they may feel sad or angry, and parents will have to manage the results. Social media is not only mindless scrolling (滚动屏幕). (即便如此,如果青少年习惯了使用社交媒体,却突然无法使用,他们可能会感到难过或愤怒,家长们就不得不应对这样的结果。社交媒体并非只是无意义地滚动屏幕。)”以及后文“Therefore, they will need other ways to stay in touch, and parents should help them keep friendships. (因此,他们需要其他方式来保持联系,父母应该帮助他们维持友谊。)”可知,前文指出社交媒体并非只有消极作用,后文说明青少年需要其他方式维持社交联系,此空应说明社交媒体的积极社交作用,A选项“It can help young people build connections. (它能帮助年轻人建立人际关系。)”承接前文的社交媒体的非消极性,且引出后文的维持友谊的需求,符合语境。故选A项。
40. F 根据后文“So parents should explain that less time on social media can reduce endless scrolling and cyberbullying (网络霸凌). (因此,父母应该向孩子解释,减少使用社交媒体的时间可以减少无意义的刷屏和网络霸凌。)”可知,后文建议父母向孩子解释禁令背后的原因,此空应作为该建议的前提,说明年轻人对有明确原因的规则接受度更高,F选项“Actually, young people respond better to rules when given a clear reason. (事实上,当得知明确的原因时,年轻人会更愿意遵守规则。)”引出后文的解释原因的建议,符合语境。故选F项。

My Views on the Use of AI Assistants in Learning
My Views on the Use of AI Assistants in Learning
Recently, an increasing number of students in our class have started using AI assistants for learning tasks. While this may seem efficient, it raises concerns about its long-term impact on learning quality.
Although AI assistants can provide helpful support, over-reliance on them may limit students’ ability to think critically and solve problems independently. When students skip the process of exploring and understanding on their own, their knowledge tends to remain shallow. To address this, I suggest that AI should be used as a supportive tool rather than a primary resource. By using it wisely and only when needed, students can benefit from its help while still developing essential thinking skills.
In conclusion, balancing AI use with active learning is the key to making it truly beneficial.

It was four weeks before the New Year, and our youth group wanted to do something together as a New Year project for our community. The concept was great, but none of us had any idea what to do.
“Maybe we could have a food drive to help the homeless,” John suggested at our Sunday night meeting. “But we have done that many times,” answered Brian with a frown (皱眉). Ten minutes passed with not a single proposal (提议) good enough to win our hearts. Finally, I decided to speak. “Why don’t we think about our project for a few days and then come back with three or four suggestions we can vote on?” Everyone agreed to wait a week before we made a decision.
I knew time was running out to get something going before the New Year, but I still had no idea what we should do. During the following week, one idea after another ran through my mind, but I was still indecisive
Thursday after school, I wandered into the kitchen as my dad prepared for dinner.Sensing my uneasiness, he asked what troubled me without even looking up.“Well...it...” I let out a long breath. “Our youth group wants to do something for the New Year, but we don’t know what to do...”“Hmm.” My dad thought out loud. “There’s a seniors’ home I’ve worked with close to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The residents don’t get out much around the New Year with the snow and ice. It might be an idea to take them out to see the New Year lights around here.”
I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular New Year light display (绚丽的新年灯光秀) in our neighborhood. To be honest, I never thought about that, but it might just work.

Next Sunday evening, our youth group met. My fellows put forward several suggestions and I also contributed Dad’s idea for discussion. Much to my surprise, the New Year light tour won their hearts. We called the seniors’ home and they were thrilled about our proposal. The following weeks, we were busy preparing everything for the tour, including the bus to drive the seniors along the planned route.
On New Year’s Day, the bus we rented arrived at the seniors’ home in the snow. Despite the cold, the snow added a magical white blanket to the neighborhood. All seniors slowly found seats on the bus and the tour began. The spectacular light display lit up their faces and I even saw some eyes filling up. Returning home, the seniors couldn’t stop talking about all they’d seen and thanked us. We were thrilled to have made their lives a little brighter during this special time of the year. Looking at their excited and grateful faces, we’d never felt warmer.

A growing population of retirees is redefining travel with distinct preferences. Compared to past generations, today’s seniors are wealthier, spending more time and money on tourism while demanding good value and meaningful trips. They seek bolder, more purposeful trips, fueling a rise in independent travel, guided tours, and philanthropic (慈善的) journeys.
Prioritizing autonomy, many opt for personalized arrangements in small groups or solo, moving away from rigid, large tours. They conduct extensive online research but also consult professionals to create a basic routine. A key motivation is the desire to build new social connections and strengthen family bonds during travel, with increasing options available to support these goals.
