For years people have enjoyed following the life of Garfield the cat. Garfield is a popular comic book character, known for being lazy and fat. But the cat was back in the news recently for something you might not expect.
A man in the USA changed Garfield’s gender to “none” on the cat’s web page. After that, many people got angry and kept changing Garfield’s web page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy, girl or neither. Finally the page was locked to stop people editing (编辑) it. Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, settled (解决) the argument. “Garfield is male,” he simply told Washington Post. The artist said he liked working with animals because they didn’t have to be old, young, boys or girls. He was angry that some people cared so much about Garfield’s gender.
It seems like quite an unnecessary argument to have. But it is not the only recent example of argument about gender.
To celebrate International Women’s Day in Australia earlier this year, the city of Melbourne made ten traffic lights with a figure dressed in a skirt. They were designed to celebrate women and give them more confidence in public. But not everyone thinks the idea is necessary. Some people think it is important for women to be treated fairly in Australia, but this idea is foolish.
“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity (公平), but really?” Melbourne mayor (市长) Robert Doyle told Herald Sun. The mayor said this idea is more likely to be laughed at than bring respect to women.
28. ________ put Garfield the cat back in the news recently.
A. The cat’s lazy character
B. Being included in a website
C. The cat’s picture being changed on its web page
D. The cat’s gender being changed on its web page
29. According to Jim Davis, _________.
A. the page about Garfield should be locked B. Garfield can be a boy or a girl, and young or old
C. artists don’t care about animals’ age or gender D. It’s unnecessary to take Garfield’s gender too seriously
30. As to the traffic light idea, Robert Doyle thought ________.
A. it would give women more confidence in public
B. it was not a good idea for gender equity
C. it would bring respect to women
D. it helped women be treated fairly in Australia
D 29. D 30. B
第二段明确指出“A man in the USA changed Garfield’s gender to “none” on the cat’s web page. After that, many people got angry and kept changing Garfield’s web page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy, girl or neither.”,由于加菲猫的性别在网页中被改动,才重返新闻。

The mystery began as the twins looked around their new home—an old house with apple trees. What interested the twins most was the attic (阁楼). There they found a dirty old bottle. After cleaning it, a surprising note inside caught their attention. By stones where shadows lie, close to where old leaves die. Not far below, under the earth, lies a treasure of secret worth. If you search and do not fear; the past will soon be clear. Near the bed where dragonflies fly, dig by the wettest place nearby.
“A treasure!” Anna said excitedly.
“And these clues! Where old leaves die,” Sam read aloud.“It’s near those apple trees.”
“Let’s get a shovel (铲子) and borrow a metal detector (金属探测器) to find the treasure.”
With their parents’ help, Sam used the detector under the apple trees and found an old bottle cap. They also checked the stone wall but there was only a nail. All their early leads turned out to be wrong.
That night, Anna kept thinking about “bed” in the note. She looked it up in the dictionary and suddenly, an idea clicked. The next morning, she led everyone into the woods where a stone wall ran by a stream (小溪).
“Where’s the bed?” Sam asked.
“Bed also means the bottom of a stream and that's where dragonflies lay their eggs.” Anna explained, sweeping the detector. Beeeee. They dug carefully and found a lunch box.
“Look at all these things.” They pulled out the treasures: a postcard, a music record, a silver half-dollar, and a baseball card.
“It's a box from the past!” Sam shouted.“Look, 1964 on the baseball card!”
“But who buried (埋) it?” Anna wondered, holding up the postcard. On the back was another note:
The past is a mystery, the present a race, to find who I am, just find the place. Look where stories and words stay, or behind the doors where secrets hide away. Anna laughed. “Here we go again—another mystery to solve!”
31. Why did someone leave the first note?
A. To ask someone to help solve the mystery. B. To introduce the history of the old house.
C. To lead people to find something valuable. D. To describe where dragonflies like to live.
32. How did Anna probably feel when “an idea clicked”?
A. Hopeful and certain. B. Surprised but a little scared.
C. Curious and interested. D. Excited but a little worried.
33. What is the best title for this story?
A. New Home B. Missing Clue
C. Hidden Treasure D. Mystery Bottle
C 32. A 33. C

D
When a robin (a kind of bird) sees itself in a window or mirror, it seems to think the reflection (映像) is another robin. The bird may hit the glass, trying to drive the other bird away.
In the 1970s, Dr. Gordon Gallup had an idea. He thought more intelligent (智力的) types of animals might know that their reflections show themselves. To find out, he created an experiment called the mirror test. If an animal passes the test, scientists say that it has “self-awareness”. In Dr. Gallup’s experiments, chimpanzees (黑猩猩) passed, but monkeys failed.
So far, only eight have passed, including humans. Four of them are in the chimpanzee family. Magpies (喜鹊), dolphins, and elephants also passed.
The mirror test has four stages.
In studies with children, a research group put stickers on the foreheads of children who just learned how to walk when they weren’t paying attention. By the age of two, most could notice the sticker in a mirror and take it off.
In Dr. Reiss’s dolphin study, the researchers put marks on two dolphins’ heads. Both dolphins noticed the mark in a mirror. One of them swam to the side of the pool and tried to rub the mark off. A mark placed on elephants’ heads gave similar results.
“Animals that pass the mirror test have a lot in common,” Dr. Reiss says. “They all have large, complicated brains compared to their body size. They all live in social groups and work with each other. They care about others.” The mirror test can’t make us know about every animal’s intelligence.
Dr. Reiss says self-awareness is only one form of intelligence. “Many highly social animals communicate in their own ways. It isn’t about who is more intelligent. It is about what kind of intelligence they show.”
34. What is the writing purpose of the passage?
A. To remind people to care about animals. B. To introduce the advantages of “the mirror test”.
C. To present some facts of “the mirror test”. D. To encourage people to do research on animals.
35. Which of the following shows the animal has “self-awareness” according to the mirror test?
A. The elephant takes the mark on its head off. B. The bird drives its reflection away.
C. The monkey takes the mark on its head off. D. The dolphin drives its reflection away.
36. Which words are the most suitable for ____▲____?
A. Search for the Mark. B. Explore the Mark.
C. Search for the Mirror. D. Explore the Mirror.
37. The following sentence can best be put at the beginning of ________.
Since then, researchers have given the test to many kinds of animals.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 7 D. Paragraph 8
C 35. A 36. D 37. B
镜子测试的Stage 4中“Notice what doesn’t belong. The animal notices a harmless mark on itself and reacts to it.” Reiss’s dolphin study ... A mark placed on elephants’ heads gave similar results.”
Stage 2的描述为“A cat may hold up its paw. Other animals shake their heads or try to look behind the mirror.”,这些行为是动物对镜子本身进行探索的表现,而非寻找标记。
句子“Since then, researchers have given the test to many kinds of animals.”

Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋). Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased, however, some of the ice has begun to disappear. Scientists have discovered huge waves in the Arctic waters.
The waves were discovered by accident in May 2010. Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.
On May 2, the ship traveled east and stopped next to a large chunk of ice around 50 miles from the small island Hopen. Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.
“We were ready to go but when I went out, I discovered many cracks (裂缝) around,” he remembers.
He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went, he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones. Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.
Within an hour, Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship’s navigation (航行) system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour. Scientists have never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.
The speed and force of the huge waves there make it impossible to know in advance when they are coming.
That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waves or depend on sea ice to protect them. Wildlife like polar bears and walruses that depend on sea ice to live are also in danger.
Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in these icy waters. As waves break up ice, the seas will become more open, and the waves will get even stronger. There are stormy times ahead.

例文
Dear Sana,
I’m glad you want to learn about Jiangsu Province.
I think you should visit Jiangsu in person instead of just taking a “cloud tour”. First, by traveling here, you can experience the real beauty of Jiangsu with your own senses — the fresh air, the delicious smells of local food, and the friendly smiles of people. Second, you can try many fun things, like boating on Tai Lake or walking on ancient bridges, which you can’t really feel through a screen.
In Jiangsu, you can enjoy many nice things. The Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing is very beautiful. You can also eat sweet and tasty Wuxi spareribs. Besides, listening to Kunqu Opera is a great joy here.
I hope you can come and enjoy Jiangsu yourself!
Yours,
Zhu Ying

A. it would give women more confidence in public
B. it was not a good idea for gender equity
C. it would bring respect to women
D. it helped women be treated fairly in Australia

A. New Home B. Missing Clue
C. Hidden Treasure D. Mystery Bottle
