A
Whether you’re a boy or a girl and whether you’re a freshman or a senior, developing the following skills will help you achieve success in school and in life.
Time management.
There are just 24 hours in each day. What you do with that time makes all the difference. While high school students have an average of 35 hours per week of class time, college students have an average of 15 to 18 hours per week. Manage your free time wisely and you’ll make full use of each day.
Good study habits.
If you’ve got them, it’s great. If not, there’s still time to develop them. Good study habits include the following:
* Always be prepared for class, and attend classes regularly. No cutting!
* Finish homework in a timely manner.
* Review your notes daily rather than study for tests the night before.
* Set aside quiet time each day for study, even if you don’t have homework or a test the next day!
________ You can’t possibly set down everything the teacher says since we talk at a pace of about 225 words per minute. But you do need to set down the important materials. Note-taking should be in a way that’s the most helpful to you. You can try writing notes on different colored cards. If you really have a problem with note-taking, you might ask your teacher if you can record daily lessons. Do whatever it takes!
Review of daily notes.
Don’t wait until the night before the test to review your notes. Go over your notes each day while the lecture is still fresh in your mind. Add any missing pieces. Compare your notes with a classmate’s notes. Review your notes each day to improve your learning and build towards your final goal: mastery of the subject or skill.
31. What advice is given in both “Good study habits” and “Review of daily notes”?
A. Make full use of each day. B. Review your notes every day. C. Finish your homework on time. D. Ask the teacher to record lessons.
32. Which of the following will be put in the empty box?
A. Recording Every Word. B. How to Prepare for Class. C. Good Note-taking. D. Reviewing with Classmates.
33. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

C. Differences Between High School and College D. Four Key Skills for Success in School and Life

B
We had been floating down the Mississippi for a few days, just Jim and I on our raft. One night, a thick fog came up—so thick we couldn’t see our hands. I was in the canoe, trying to tie it to the raft, when the raft drifted off without me. I shouted, “Jim!” But his answering voice sounded far away.
All night I paddled around, lost and scared. I called and called. No answer. I thought about Jim alone on the raft, and I felt awful.
Just before dawn, the fog lifted. There was the raft, quiet and still. And there was Jim, sitting with his head down, asleep.
I climbed back to it quietly. Then a silly thought came to me. I shook him awake, putting on a serious face.
“Huck! You’re safe!” Jim jumped up, his eyes full of tears. “We got separated in the fog. I searched for you all night. I cried, thinking I’d never see you again!”
I tried not to laugh and said, “What’s wrong with you?”
Jim stared at me. Then he looked around at leaves and branches over the raft—things from the trees along the shore during the night. Then he turned to look at paddle marks in the wet wood—showing where the canoe had been.
He looked at me again and this time his face changed. He looked hurt. Real hurt.
“I called you for hours,” he said slowly. “I said, ‘Poor Huck is lost forever.’ And now you sit there and tell me it was a dream.”
I didn’t say anything. I just looked at my feet. I felt about two inches high.
“Jim, it isn’t a dream. I’m sorry.”
He turned away and didn’t say a word. Seeing this, my heart sank. If I’d known it would make him feel that way, I wouldn’t have done it at all.
— Adapted from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

C. “The fog is gone now. We can keep going down the river.”
D. “I never left the raft, Jim. You must have had a bad dream.”
36. What does Huck mean when he says “I felt about two inches high”?

How beautiful the jasmine (茉莉花) is! A sweet smell covers the budding twigs. So fragrant, so white, admired by all lips.” This famous Chinese folk song, Jasmine Flower, is loved around the world. Traditionally made jasmine tea is as popular as the song. The nice smell and smooth taste of the tea attract countless tea drinkers.
Chen Chengzhong, a 72-year-old tea master from Fuzhou, has a big say in making jasmine tea. He started his career early in his teenage years, when he worked in a state-owned tea factory.
Jasmine tea is usually made with green tea as its base. To add the jasmine smell, people use fresh jasmine flowers. These flowers are picked during the daytime when the buds are still closed. And the green tea leaves from the spring harvest are stored until the most fragrant jasmine flowers appear in late summer.
The hot and humid weather and the red soil in East China’s Fujian province provide perfect conditions for jasmine and tea plants, which are needed for high-quality Jasmine tea. “Our jasmine flowers and tea leaves are all from Fujian, although they cost more than those from other places,” Chen said.
When the fresh jasmine flowers are picked, they are mixed with layers of tea leaves. Workers stir (搅拌) the mixture overnight so that the tea leaves can take in the sweet smell of the flowers. In the morning, the flowers are taken out, the leaves are dried, and the process (流程) is repeated. More times of repeating create a stronger jasmine flavor. To make excellent jasmine tea, workers need to repeat the process at least nine times.
Now Chen Chengzhong has been chosen as a representative of Fuzhou jasmine tea making skills. He focuses on passing on his skills by giving lessons to students and young workers. His son, Chen Zheng, is also following his father’s path. “Like my father, I hope to practice this traditional skill with deep cultural meaning and pass it on,” Chen Zheng said.
38. Why does the writer mention the folk song Jasmine Flower in Paragraph1?
A. To teach readers to sing the famous folk song. B. To introduce and lead in the topic of jasmine tea.
C. To show the long history of Chinese folk music. D. To explain how to plant jasmine flowers properly.
39. What does the underlined phrase “has a big say” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

① Mix fresh jasmine flowers with tea leaves in layers. ② Pick fresh jasmine flowers when buds are closed.
③ Take out the flowers and dry the tea leaves. ④ Store spring green tea leaves until late summer.
⑤ Stir the mixture overnight to take in the flower smell.
A. ②→④→①→⑤→③ B. ④→②→①→⑤→③ C. ②→①→④→⑤→③ D. ④→①→②→⑤→③

D
Every January, many of us plan to read more. We place a new book on the nightstand, download a popular audiobook, or pick up the old library card that we haven’t used for months. We keep finding our way back to it because reading brings us peace, curiosity and a break from busy life. It feels like a healthy promise to ourselves. But recent research shows that reading is much more powerful than we know. In fact, doing so regularly has been linked to a longer life.
This idea may sound too good to be true, but a serious study from Yale School of Public Health provides strong evidence. Researchers followed 3,635 adults aged 50 and above for 12 years. They studied the relationship between reading habits and length of life. They found people who read books often lived an average of 23 months longer than those who never read. The result remained the same even after considering education, income, health conditions, and other possible influences. This means reading itself helps people live longer, not just the advantages often coming with being a reader.
Experts have found two main reasons for this benefit. Elizabeth A. L. Stine-Morrow, a professor from the University of Illinois, says emotional and social effects play a key role. Raymond Mar, a psychology professor, adds that when we read, we practice understanding different feelings and thinking from others’ viewpoints. Loneliness is now considered a serious risk factor for early death. Books help fight loneliness by offering companionship without pressure.
Another reason is that it seems to be a very real form of stress reduction. “When we read, we often enter a peaceful and thoughtful state of mind,” explains Mar. The calm that reading brings may help reduce stress and lead to a healthier and longer life.
To enjoy these benefits of reading, we do need to make it a habit—but we don’t need to make any dramatic changes. Ten to 30 minutes a day is enough to create meaningful and lasting benefits over time.
In January, some special artworks were shown at Lillian M. Jacobs School in Hull, Massachusetts. The sculptures are made entirely of rubbish collected by sixth-graders!
The school lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In February 2024, the students spent a cold day cleaning up a nearly 1-mile area of Nantasket Beach. They collected more than 40 bags of rubbish.
“I often go to the beach and don’t notice the rubbish,” says Derek DeGallo, who is now a seventh-grader. “But when I looked for it, I realized how much there was.”
Every year, billions of pounds of rubbish end up in oceans all over the world. The students found many things on the beach, from fishing lines to old shopping carts. Most of it is plastic. This waste makes beaches dirty and can hurt sea animals — many get stuck in the plastic or eat it by mistake, falling ill.
After their beach cleanup, the students sorted the rubbish into groups like glass, plastic and foam and counted each piece of rubbish. They sent the data to the Center for Coastal Studies, an organization that helps protect the ocean near Massachusetts.
Then, a local artist named Jackie Ranney and the school’s teachers helped the students turn the rubbish into sculptures of fish and other sea creatures, like whales and seahorses. The artworks show people how important it is to take care of the earth.
“I hope kids see these artworks and think about how they use plastic,” says Ranney, the local artist. “They might ask themselves, ‘Do I throw away and recycle my rubbish in the right way?’”
Derek, now a seventh-grader, feels proud that he and his classmates helped stop rubbish from getting into the ocean.
“Our town’s beaches are wonderful,” he says. “We want to make sure they stay clean.”

“dig up the ground”意为“翻地、挖地”,动名词digging符合语境。
上文提到“我们收获了!”,母亲接着说“Let’s have a party tonight to celebrate”,这是一个提出建议的句子。
上文“我”说花生便宜,空格处“Almost everyone can a… to buy peanuts”进一步解释:几乎每个人都买得起;情态动词can后用动词原形。

In my opinion, growth means becoming better both in mind and action. It is not just about getting older, but learning from every experience. Let me share my own story. I used to be afraid of speaking in public. Whenever I tried to answer questions in class, my heart beat fast. However, I decided to face my fear. I practiced speaking in front of a mirror every day. Step by step, I became more confident. Last month, I gave a successful speech in our class. That was a big moment of growth for me.

A
Whether you’re a boy or a girl and whether you’re a freshman or a senior, developing the following skills will help you achieve success in school and in life.

A. ②→④→①→⑤→③ B. ④→②→①→⑤→③ C. ②→①→④→⑤→③ D. ④→①→②→⑤→③

And just as Raymond Mar says, “It is never too late to discover or rediscover the joys and long-lasting advantages of reading.”
42. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The habit of reading. B. The new year’s plan. C. The old library card. D. The feeling of calm.
43. What conclusion can we draw from Yale’s study?
A. Old people must read to live a longer life. B. Young adults gain the most from reading.
C. Education decides the length of people’s lives. D. Reading itself helps people live a longer life.
44. What is the main idea of Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Social-emotional effects matter for the length of life. B. Books help people stay away from loneliness.
C. Why reading helps people live a longer life. D. How many minutes a day people should read.
45. What is the main purpose of the passage?
