This does not mean the park is c 4 dark. To keep people safe, basic lighting r 5 in key areas such as main entrances, crossroads, and important walkways. This balanced action shows a wise and thoughtful way to run a city.
As early as 2023, Shenzhen introduced rules to c 6 light pollution. For example, in the area around the mangroves (红树林), cold blue-white lights have been replaced (替换) with w 7 yellow ones that disturb birds less. Thanks to these efforts, the number of bird species in Shenzhen’s mangrove parks has r 8 from 83 to 220 over the past few years.
What makes this story special is the voice of the public. Many people agree that making space for nature is the right c 9 . This shows a growing awareness (意识) that a truly livable city is not just bright and busy, but also peaceful and balanced.
Shenzhen is not a 10 . Other cities like Beijing and Chengdu have also taken steps to cut down light pollution during migration seasons.
In the end, turning off lights for birds is not just about protecting animals—it proves that a city can be modern and eco-friendly at the same time.

Feeling stressed or sad? You might be surprised to know that hugging a tree can actually help you feel (1b 1 . It may sound a little funny, but science shows that spending time (2)c to trees is good for both our minds and bodies.
One idea behind this is (3)c the “biophilia hypothesis” (生物亲和力假说). It was suggested by scientist Edward Wilson. He believed that humans are naturally drawn to (被吸引) (4)l things, such as plants and animals. This love for nature is part of who we are. That’s why many people feel relaxed when they see green forests, grass, or flowers (5)i of tall buildings and busy streets.
Studies have also shown that hugging trees can (6)c how our bodies work. When we hug a tree, our body may produce more oxytocin (催产素), a hormone (荷尔蒙) that helps us (7)f calm, safe and happy. What does it mean to be green? Green is more than just a (1)c . It also means taking steps to protect the environment. Buying a green product is a small step everyone can take. (2)D whether a product is green, however, isn't always easy. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the product even after it's of no use. Here is what we may keep in(3)m .
The materials of a product are usually our first focus. What is it made of? Are there any (4)h chemicals (化学物质) in it? Green products are made of more natural materials, so they can be good for our (5)h .
Packaging(包装) is important. How is a product packaged? Is it over-packaged? We'd better choose glass, metal and paper packaging as these can be (6)r or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packaging or even choose unbagged products whenever possible.
Location matters. Where was a product produced? Where are we buying it? Think about how much energy was used to get it to us. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmers and shop at markets. Buying from stores near our houses is also a good choice because we can go there (7)w driving a car.
Look into what the company tells us about their product. It's easy to say that a product is“green” or“all natural” but the words may be (8)t good to be true. So, much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain of salt.
The greenest thing is certainly the one we don't buy. Things like(9)f and clothing are necessary for life. But many others are not. Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, (10)r waste and keeps the planet healthy.

Guarding the Blue Planet
Liu loves to teach people to explore the underwater world and lead them to feel the beauty of the sea. Now, he devotes himself to the voluntary work in a community called Better Blue. The volunteers in Better Blue are not only made up of diving coaches like Liu, but also pilots, lawyers, doctors and so on. All of them should have the knowledge of the sea.
Every year, 12 million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean. Sea animals like turtles often lose their lives because of eating plastic or fishing nets. Even humans on land are influenced because the fish we eat may have harmful plastic particles in their bodies. So the community Better Blue was started in 2017. It hopes to raise marine (海洋的) protection awareness among the public, invite people to protect the endangered sea animals and encourage people to think about how to make the ocean develop in a friendly way.
Dive Against Debris is an activity organized by Better Blue to protect the ocean. The activity needs volunteers with greater diving skills. In this project, divers go into the waters and fish out rubbish, which is then separated into different groups. They do this at several fixed locations in the bay area of Shenzhen every month. The work also includes checking which rubbish often appears in the area, doing a research on why this kind of rubbish is the most and making suggestions to reduce the pollution.
Marine protection is not limited to collecting rubbish. It also includes marine protection education. On weekdays, Liu volunteers to teach children marine protection in local schools. Volunteers like him teach marine science to make children realize that land- based rubbish can also pollute the ocean. Researchers from local universities also take part in such activities.
With diving becoming popular, people are more willing to learn about marine protection. They come with their equipment, dive into the waters, get to know the underwater world and protect it.
Liu is not only a diving ___1__, but also a volunteer in Better Blue. Volunteers of Better Blue do different jobs and they are ___2__ to have the knowledge of the sea.

The Yellow River, known as China’s “Mother River”, is not that yellow in recent years. As China’s second-longest river, it has long been troubled by pollution and too much sand. However, thanks to environmental protection efforts, its water quality has improved greatly. In 2022, for the first time, the main part of the Yellow River reached Class II water quality. This means the water is clean enough for drinking after proper treatment. This high standard has been kept for years.
Numbers show great progress. Since 2018, the percentage of clean water (Class I-III) across the whole river area has gone up from 66.4% to over 90%. At the same time, the dirtiest water (below Class V), which was not fit for any use, is no longer seen. On average, the rate of good water in the area continues to go up every year. These amazing results show the environment of the Yellow River is getting better and better.
This great change did not come easily. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the river faced serious environmental problems. Factory waste, agricultural pollution and household wastewater made the river dirty. Many local fish died out, and the water became unsafe to drink, putting millions of people living along the river in danger.
To save the “Mother River”, our government took many useful steps. Over 17,000 polluted outlets (排污口) were strictly controlled. The Yellow River Protection Law came into effect in 2023, offering the river long-term support. Besides, large projects to stop soil loss were carried out on the Loess Plateau (黄土高原), and water projects like the Xiaolangdi Dam helped reduce sand in the water.
Today, the Yellow River is lively again. Endangered fish have appeared in its waters again, and rare birds like whooper swans now spend winter in the Sanmenxia Reservoir. The “Mother River”, once polluted, is now clear and healthy, bringing hope back to the land and people who depend on it.
The changes to the Yellow River
Improvement in water quality
The water in the Yellow River now has much 1 quality.
The water is clean enough after it is properly 2 .
Progress in water quality numbers
The percentage of clean water (Class I-III) along the whole river has 3 by 23.6%
The dirtiest water has already disappeared 4 .
The rate of the clean water along the river keeps going up.
Serious problems of the river in the 5
In the 1990s and early 2000s,three kinds of waste caused bad results:
Local fish disappeared.
People living along the river 6 losing their lives.
Useful protection steps
Polluted outlets into the river were under 7 .
The law about protecting the Yellow River came into effect.
Large projects were carried out to keep soil from being 8 .
New look of the river
Endangered fish have 9 to its waters.
Rare birds now spend their winter in the Sanmenxia Reservoir.
