[1] For Connor Dennehy, a physical teacher at Cordello Avenue Elementary School, physical fitness is not about nurturing star athletes but building confidence through purposeful movement. He is especially dedicated to ensuring that students with special needs, who he says “deserve the same chance to find joy in movement as every other child,” can cultivate sustainable happiness.
[2] While initially desiring to become a physical therapist (治疗师), he found himself particularly drawn to education through his mother and stepfather, both seasoned educators on Long Island. After completing his specialized training at SUNY Cortland, he enthusiastically joined this school in 2021, valuing the opportunity to work with young students. Rather than conducting standardized drills, he uses multi-sensory strategies: pairing verbal instructions for pushups with visual step cards, and using soft foam (泡沫) balls to help those with motor skill challenges feel successful. For students uninterested in movement, he leans into their strengths — like creating a “rhythm jump-rope” activity for a music-loving student who dislikes team sports.
[3] Nathaniel Marner, the school principal, described Dennehy as a “forward-thinking educator who constantly invents creative ways to engage students.” This impact is perhaps best illustrated by the genuine feedback from his students. Fourth-grader Lopez also showed her ultimate approval, “He’s cool.” She further explained more about his appealing personality and the diverse activities he has introduced, from basic exercises to various sports.
[4] Beyond the school’s walls, Dennehy extends his educational impact through coaching the junior volleyball team and instructing student participation in regional fitness programs. Yet his most rewarding professional moment remains fundamentally simple: surveying his gymnasium to witness his students actively engaged, each face reflecting the genuine joy of movement — a proof to his success in making physical education an accessible source of confidence and well-being.
24. What does Dennehy’s teaching particularly focus on?
A. Building lasting happiness for all students.
B. Ensuring equal joy for special-needs students.
C. Boosting young students’ confidence via movement.
D. Training talented students to become professional athletes.
25. What influenced Dennehy’s career choice?
A. The example of his family members.
B. His early training in physical therapy.
C. A desire to reform school sports programs.
D. An offer from Cordello Avenue Elementary.
26. Which of the following best describes Dennehy’s teaching style?
A. Strict and skill-focused. B. Diverse and personalized.
C. Multi-sensory and routine. D. Standardized and competitive.
27. Why does Dennehy consider his work worthwhile?
A. He sees his students enjoy moving. B. He has won several teaching awards.
C. He receives praise from the principal. D. He coaches a successful volleyball team.
根据第一段“For Connor Dennehy, a physical teacher at Cordello Avenue Elementary School, physical fitness is not about nurturing star athletes but building confidence through purposeful movement.(对于科德罗大道小学的体育老师康纳·丹尼希来说,身体素质的培养不在于培养明星运动员,而在于通过有目的的运动建立自信)”可知,丹尼希的教学重点是通过有目的的运动来提升学生的自信,而不是培养明星运动员。故选C。
根据第二段“While initially desiring to become a physical therapist (治疗师), he found himself particularly drawn to education through his mother and stepfather, both seasoned educators on Long Island.(虽然他最初想成为一名物理治疗师,但他发现自己的母亲和继父都是长岛经验丰富的教育工作者,这让他对教育产生了浓厚的兴趣)”可知,丹尼希的母亲和继父都是资深教育工作者,他们的榜样作用对他选择教育职业产生了重要影响。故选A。
根据第二段“Rather than conducting standardized drills, he uses multi-sensory strategies: pairing verbal instructions for pushups with visual step cards, and using soft foam (泡沫) balls to help those with motor skill challenges feel successful. For students uninterested in movement, he leans into their strengths — like creating a “rhythm jump-rope” activity for a music-loving student who dislikes team sports.(他没有进行标准化的训练,而是采用多感官教学策略:将俯卧撑的口头指令与视觉步骤卡片相结合,并使用软泡沫球帮助那些有运动技能挑战的学生获得成功感。对于对运动不感兴趣的学生,他发挥他们的长处——比如为一位喜欢音乐但不喜欢团队运动的学生设计了“节奏跳绳”活动)”以及第三段“Fourth-grader Lopez also showed her ultimate approval, “He’s cool.” She further explained more about his appealing personality and the diverse activities he has introduced, from basic exercises to various sports.(四年级学生洛佩兹也表示了她的极度认可:“他很酷。”她进一步解释了他吸引人的个性和他引入的多样化活动,从基础锻炼到各种运动)”可知,丹尼希的教学方式既个性化又多样化,能够根据学生的不同需求和兴趣设计教学活动。故选B。
27. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Yet his most rewarding professional moment remains fundamentally simple: surveying his gymnasium to witness his students actively engaged, each face reflecting the genuine joy of movement — a proof to his success in making physical education an accessible source of confidence and well-being.(然而,他最有价值的职业时刻仍然非常简单:巡视体育馆,看到学生们积极参与运动,每张脸上都洋溢着真正的喜悦——这证明了他成功地将体育教育变成了学生获取自信和幸福的途径)”可知,丹尼希认为他的工作最有价值的是看到学生们享受运动的过程。故选A。

[1] Bamboo is a highly renewable resource, and its cellulose (纤维素) fibres can be turned into a hard, easy-to-shape plastic for use in cars and household appliances. This bamboo-based plastic is not only as strong and long-lasting as common plastics for such uses, but also can be reused and break down easily in soil.
[2] Plastics made from living things, or bioplastics, are increasingly popular, but they still make up only around half a percent of global plastic production. This is partly because they are not as strong as oil-based plastics and can’t be easily used in common factory production processes.
[3] Now, Dawei Zhao at Shenyang University of Chemical Technology in China and his team have developed a way to produce plastic from bamboo cellulose, which can match or even beat the qualities of many widely used plastics. “Bamboo’s rapid growth makes it a highly renewable resource, though its current uses are still largely traditional,” says Zhao.
[4] Zhao’s team first treated the bamboo with certain chemicals and an acid, breaking down the strong chemical bonds to produce a mixture of smaller cellulose molecules (分子). Adding alcohol then made these molecules rearrange into a strong, solid plastic. Andrew Dove at the University of Birmingham, UK, says the plastic’s toughness is similar to commonly used engineering plastics. However, its rigidity means its possible uses aren’t the most widespread. “It’s not going to replace the main plastics used in packaging,” says Dove. “But while it’s aiming at a smaller group of engineering plastics, it could still help reduce worries about getting enough material for some plastics we use now. ”
[5] Although it isn’t as cheap as some common plastics, Zhao’s team found that it can be completely recycled while keeping 90% of its original strength, which can lower production costs, making it more lucrative. They also reported that it breaks down naturally within 50 days, although similar claims for other so-called biodegradable (可生物降解的) plastics have not always proven true.
28. What is an advantage of bamboo-based plastic?
A. It is more durable than oil-based plastics. B. It is recyclable and can break down easily.
C. Its fibres are stable and hold the shape well.
D. Its production requires no chemical treatment.
29. How did Zhao’s team turn bamboo into solid plastic?
A. By rearranging cellulose molecules with alcohol.
B. By mixing bamboo with engineering plastics.
C. By breaking chemical bonds to get larger molecules.
D. By heating bamboo with special chemicals.

C. It will replace common packaging plastics in the near future.
D. It may serve specific engineering purposes despite its limits.
31. What does “lucrative” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Economically attractive. B. Structurally strong.
C. Easily recyclable. D. Highly durable.
根据第一段中的“This bamboo-based plastic is not only as strong and long-lasting as common plastics for such uses, but also can be reused and break down easily in soil.(这种竹基塑料不仅像用于此类用途的普通塑料一样坚固耐用,而且可以重复使用,并且在土壤中容易分解。)”
根据第四段中的“Zhao’s team first treated the bamboo with certain chemicals and an acid, breaking down the strong chemical bonds to produce a mixture of smaller cellulose molecules (分子). Adding alcohol then made these molecules rearrange into a strong, solid plastic.(赵的团队首先用某些化学物质和酸处理竹子,分解强的化学键,产生较小的纤维素分子混合物。然后加入酒精使这些分子重新排列成一种坚固的固体塑料。)”可知,赵的团队通过用酒精重新排列纤维素分子将竹子变成固体塑料。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“However, its rigidity means its possible uses aren’t the most widespread. “It’s not going to replace the main plastics used in packaging,” says Dove. “But while it’s aiming at a smaller group of engineering plastics, it could still help reduce worries about getting enough material for some plastics we use now. ”(然而,它的刚性意味着它的可能用途并不是最广泛的。多夫说:“它不会取代用于包装的主要塑料。”“但是,尽管它的目标是较小的一组工程塑料,但它仍然可以帮助减少对我们现在使用的一些塑料获得足够材料的担忧。”)”可推知,尽管竹基塑料有其局限性,但它仍可能服务于特定的工程目的。故选D项。
31. 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Although it isn’t as cheap as some common plastics, Zhao’s team found that it can be completely recycled while keeping 90% of its original strength, which can lower production costs, making it more lucrative.(尽管它不像一些普通塑料那样便宜,但赵的团队发现,这种材料可以被完全回收,并且保留90%的原有强度,这能够降低生产成本,从而使其更lucrative。)” 故选A项。

[1] When you rub(摩擦) a balloon on your skin, it produces electricity — a familiar example of charge separation(电荷分离), a process in which opposite charges are separated, creating electric potential. Similarly, raindrops striking a narrow tube create a tiny yet significant burst of energy. Now, researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have tapped into this effect to generate electricity using rain-like droplets.
[2] Conventional hydropower(水力发电) relies on large water flows, which only work in places like rivers. For smaller, slower flows, researchers have explored charge separation. They use a tube to let water flow through it continuously. Charges gather on the surface that the water touches. In this way, researchers can collect charges, but it is far from effective.
[3] To solve this problem, the NUS team built a special device. At both ends of the device — the top of the newly-designed tube (about 2 millimeters in width), and the water-collecting cup at the bottom — electrical wires were placed to harvest charges. First, water is released from a metal needle, forming rain-like droplets. When these droplets enter the tube, their impacts create “plug flow,” in which the water forms mini columns separated by air gaps. This flow is crucial because it allows more surface contact and more time for charges to build up, generating up to 100, 000times more charge separation than continuous flow. As charged droplets exit the tube and fall into the cup, charges build up in the water, creating an electric current. In tests, four tubes produced enough electricity to power 12 LED lights continuously for 20 seconds.
[4] According to the study’s lead author, this model shows how rain can be used to generate clean electricity effectively and sustainably, especially in rainy places such as Singapore. Its potential is enormous, as it offers an alternative energy source even in cities. Imagine a rain collection device on your roof, producing small amounts of electricity whenever it rains — a small step for a raindrop, but a giant leap for sustainable energy technology.
32. What problem do the NUS researchers aim to solve?
A. The difficulty of separating charges. B. The lack of clean electricity sources.
C. The inefficiency of charge harvesting. D. The damage of traditional hydropower.
33. Which of the following best illustrates “plug flow”?
A. B. C. D.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning the model?
A. Its potential cost in urban areas. B. Its promising use in green energy.
C. Its complex design for rain power. D. Its practical need for more devices.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Revolutionary Energy from Raindrops B. Urgent Demand for Sustainable Energy
C. Capturing Raindrops through Innovation
D. Turning Charge Separation into Electricity
根据第二段“For smaller, slower flows, researchers have explored charge separation. They use a tube to let water flow through it continuously. Charges gather on the surface that the water touches. In this way, researchers can collect charges, but it is far from effective. (对于更小、更慢的水流,研究人员已经探索了电荷分离。他们用一根管子让水不断流过。电荷聚集在水接触的表面。通过这种方式,研究人员可以收集电荷,但效果远不理想。)”可知,研究人员面临的问题是收集电荷的效率很低。因此,NUS研究人员旨在解决的问题是电荷收集的低效性。故选C项。
33. 推理判断题。根据第三段“When these droplets enter the tube, their impacts create “plug flow,” in which the water forms mini columns separated by air gaps. (当这些水滴进入管道时,它们的撞击会产生“塞流”,即水形成由气隙隔开的小柱。)”可知,“塞流”指的是水形成由气隙隔开的小柱,结合选项可知,D项符合“塞流”的特点。故选D项。
34. 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“According to the study’s lead author, this model shows how rain can be used to generate clean electricity effectively and sustainably, especially in rainy places such as Singapore. Its potential is enormous, as it offers an alternative energy source even in cities. Imagine a rain collection device on your roof, producing small amounts of electricity whenever it rains — a small step for a raindrop, but a giant leap for sustainable energy technology.
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Now, researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have tapped into this effect to generate electricity using rain-like droplets. (现在,新加坡国立大学(NUS)的研究人员利用这种效应,利用类似雨滴的水滴发电。)”可知,文章主要介绍了新加坡国立大学的研究人员利用雨滴撞击窄管产生的电荷分离效应来发电,展示了雨滴发电在绿色能源领域的巨大潜力,因此,A项“Revolutionary Energy from Raindrops (来自雨滴的革命性能源)”是最合适的标题。故选A项。
[1] There are times in life that call for you to give a good pep talk Maybe your partner just lost his job. Maybe your kid is anxious about returning to school. __36__ Here are guidelines for crafting meaningful pep talks.
[2] Being specific matters. Instead of using vague(含糊的) phrases like “You can do this!”, take time to understand the underlying concerns. For instance, if your younger brother is nervous about giving a speech at his high school graduation, acknowledge his fears directly. Then, offer to go over it with him one more time before the big day. __37__
[3] Pep talks shouldn’t be reserved for major events alone. We often cheer people on for major challenges, like running a marathon, but overlook everyday struggles. __38__ That’s why lending support in ordinary times matters. If a friend mentions feeling overwhelmed by daily chores, send a simple message: “I believe in you.” Small gestures can make a big difference, showing care every bit as meaningful as grand support.
[4] __39__ Sometimes, it’s simply about listening, acknowledging someone’s feelings and putting yourself in their shoes. If a friend is upset after losing a pet, assess if they want solutions. If not, offer comfort and acknowledge their pain. Remind them you understand how hard it is, but assure them you’re there. This presence and support can be deeply comforting without needing new insights.
[5] Keep it simple. Whether you’re cheering others or lifting your spirits, a pep talk needn’t be complex. Leaving a brief note saying “Don’t give up!” on a colleague’s desk, or sending a message to a friend who failed an exam, expressing belief in their ability to improve, can significantly boost spirits. __40__ There’s no need for perfection; sometimes, simple, touching words are enough to make a difference.
A. Advice isn’t always necessary in a pep talk.
B. This shows empathy and provides tailored help.
C. Yet it’s these small moments that shape our days.
D. A pep talk doesn’t always require a full understanding of others.
E. Even for yourself, straightforward encouragement yields great results.
F. And sometimes, it’s you yourself that need a boost of encouragement.
G. Though time-consuming, the encouragement you give proves to be effective.

[1] One lovely weekend, my husband Max took me and our two-year-old daughter Ila for a picnic in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Also accompanying us was our ten-month-old Labrador (拉布拉多犬) D’Argo. He was a dog I picked up on a rainy night. Over the years, he had changed from a shy, frightened puppy into a gentle and loyal companion.
[2] After our picnic, I safely fastened Ila into her car seat and waved D’Argo inside. But as I closed the door with a soft click, panic shot through me — D’Argo had accidentally stepped on the remote (遥控器), locking them both inside. Max hurried over, his face turning pale. “Where’s the key?” he asked anxiously. I pointed to the driver’s seat, where the only key, attached to the remote door lock control, was lying along with my purse.
[3] April afternoons are warm, and the temperature inside a parked car rises quickly. In just a few minutes, Ila’s cheeks turned pink and sweaty. Her little hands held the seat belt tightly. D’Argo jumped restlessly from the front seat to the back, barking loudly as if he had been begging for help. “Let’s break it open!” Max said, prying (撬动) at the lock with a thick branch, but the door stayed shut. “It’s no use,” I whispered, heart sinking. “Call 911!”
[4] Fifteen minutes later, the police car finally arrived. The officer tried to open the lock with a metal tool but failed. Soon, two more officers arrived, but they couldn’t unlock the door either.
[5] Ila’s face was flushed and shiny. Drops of sweat rolled down her cheeks, and she started crying for me. I hit the window helplessly. Seeing this, D’Argo jumped to her side at once, rubbing his head against her small hand gently and licking her tears to make her feel better.

The officers finally suggested breaking the front driver’s window to get them out. Hearing the danger, Max immediately stepped forward and carefully broke the window with a tool. As the glass cracked, something amazing happened. Instead of hiding, D’Argo pushed Ila aside with his body, trying his best to protect her from the broken glass. Then he stuck his head out, whining softly, clearly worried about Ila who was sitting beside him. The officers quickly reached in and pulled the frightened but unhurt little girl out, and then got D’Argo out safely.
I gratefully held D’Argo in my arms, and brushed the glass pieces off his body gently. Tears blurred my eyes as I hugged this warm and brave little dog tightly. Max and I were both deeply moved by his selfless act. At that moment, I truly realized that D’Argo was not just a pet, but a beloved member of our family. He had used his own way to protect our daughter when we were desperate, showing his unique and silent love for us. This experience left us with a deep and unforgettable memory.

30. What can be inferred from Dove’s comment on Zhao’s bamboo plastic?
A. It is too rigid to be used in any packaging products.
B. It is tougher than traditional engineering plastics.
C. It will replace common packaging plastics in the near future.
D. It may serve specific engineering purposes despite its limits.
31. What does “lucrative” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Economically attractive. B. Structurally strong.
C. Easily recyclable. D. Highly durable.
