①Chen Haoyuan still remembers the first time he looked down from a high place. His hands were wet, and his legs shook. But today, at the age of 35, he works on very high transmission towers (输电塔), some as tall as 135 meters.
②After getting his doctoral (博士的) degree, Chen made a special choice. He didn’t choose to work in a lab or a school. He took a job at a power company. “I don’t like office work,” he said. “I love being outside. Every day is different.”
③But the work was not easy. He had to travel to faraway mountains and work hard. The work required much knowledge too. He had to learn about weather, power and even birds.
④Chen also came up with new ideas for his team. He made a special suit to help workers climb more easily. He also made new tools. The old tools were very heavy — up to 40 kg. His new tools are much lighter. Now, the work is safer and faster.
⑤His family didn’t understand his job at first. But his three-year-old son is proud of his job. He calls his dad “a hero who climbs towers”.
⑥Chen feels truly happy with his job. “A job is something we will stick to for many years,” he said. “You must love what you do from the bottom of your heart, and then you can keep going and do it well.”
29. Why did Chen choose to work on transmission towers?
A. The company paid more.
B. He liked staying outdoors.
C. He couldn’t find a lab job.
D. His family wanted him to.
30. Which paragraph shows Chen’s creativity in his work?
A. Paragraph ②. B. Paragraph ③. C. Paragraph ④. D. Paragraph ⑤.

Are you a fan of seafood? How do you deal with the seashells (贝壳) after eating? Well, most people throw them away. Tons of seashells end up as waste. But Dr. Rosa Isela from Mexico and her team have turned the waste seashells into a white thing called chitosan (壳聚糖). It is different from plastic—it breaks down easily in the environment. It is safer and can be used in many ways.
Chitosan helps keep fish healthy. Sometimes, harmful bacteria (细菌) grow in the water and make the baby fish sick. Chitosan has a positive charge (电荷). Bacteria have a negative charge. When chitosan touches bacteria, it sticks to them quickly. This kills the bacteria or stops them from growing.
Chitosan can also help keep fruit fresh. Farmers use it to make a special cover on fruit. First, it kills bacteria to stop the fruit from going bad. Second, it locks water inside to keep the fruit from getting dry. Third, it slows down the fruit’s breathing, so fruit saves energy and stays fresh longer.
Chitosan can have a real difference especially for cities on the coast. People there, both locals and visitors, eat a lot of seafood, so tons of shells are thrown away every day. Now those shells can be used to make chitosan. In this way, waste becomes something useful. This is a good example of how science can turn waste into value. Chitosan helps people and brings us hope for a greener future.
32. What is chitosan made from?
A. Seashells. B. Clean water. C. Fresh fruit. D. Plastic waste.
33. How does chitosan help fish?
A. By serving as food for fish. B. By sticking to the bacteria.
C. By cleaning the fish’s body. D. By giving fish more energy.
34. Which is NOT a way chitosan keeps fruit fresh?
A. Killing bacteria. B. Locking water inside.
C. Making fruit taste sweeter. D. Slowing down the fruit’s breathing.
35. In which part of a magazine can we probably read the text?
A. Health & Medicine. B. Food & Culture.
C. Travel & Geography. D. Science & Environment.

One day I got a letter from my student Lucy: “Recently, I’ve been feeling a bit upset. I see all my friends are really good at specific things like sports, art, or science, but I’m not sure what I’m really good at. Sometimes I feel a little left behind, and I really hope to find my own way. But how can I discover my hidden strengths (优势)?”
People often experience similar doubts when discovering their own strengths. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here is some practical advice for you.
Take some time to find your joy. Think about what you love doing in your everyday life. It could be anything from cooking, painting, to playing a sport. Don’t worry about how well you do it, just focus on how it makes you feel. It is the key to finding what you really enjoy and where your strengths lie.
Sometimes it’s hard for you to see yourself clearly, so you need to get some feedback (反馈意见) from others. Ask people you trust what they think you’re good at. They may find your strengths that you missed, like being patient or good at communicating. Remember, feedback isn’t about judgment. It’s about having another way to see things. Use what they tell you to explore new things!
You might have to learn a new skill for your study or deal with a difficult situation. Try to see it as a way to learn about yourself better. Facing hurdles bravely instead of running away from them can help find your strengths you never knew. Go and discover the power waiting inside you.
Follow these tips, and you will discover your own strengths soon.
36. Why is Lucy upset recently?
A. She has no good friends.
B. She isn’t sure what she is good at.
C. Her parents don’t understand her.
D. She does badly in her schoolwork.
37. What should you pay attention to when finding your joy?
A. How well you do something. B. How something makes you feel.
C. What you can get from something. D. How long you spend on something.
38. Who should we ask for feedback?
A. The one who we trust. B. The one who we love.
C. The one who we respect. D. The one who we care about.
39. What does the underlined word “hurdles” mean?
A. doubts B. mistakes C. challenges D. changes
40. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Find Joy in Everyday Life B. How to Be a Top Student
C. Why Friends Are Important D. Discover Your Hidden Strengths
第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
On April 19, 2026, a very special sports event took place in Beijing. It was a 21-kilometer half-marathon (马拉松), but the runners were not all humans. Over 100 humanoid (类人的) robots joined about 12,000 human runners on the same course. It’s the world’s second robot half-marathon. The first was held on the same day in Beijing in 2025.
The difference from the 2025 race was huge. In 2025, only 20 teams took part, and just six robots managed to finish the race. Many robots fell down or broke down on the way, and some people joked it looked more like a “baby walking competition” than a real marathon.
This year, however, everything changed. In total, 47 robots completed the full race successfully. The winner was a robot called “Lightning”. It finished the race in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds—even faster than the human world record! What’s more, compared with the 2025 winning time, “Lightning” was nearly two hours faster!
Another big change was that many robots became smarter. 40% of the robots could “see” the road and make their own decisions without any human control.
Why hold such a race? Organizers say running 21 kilometers outdoors tests many important skills at once—movement control, battery (电池) life, and the ability to deal with different road conditions. These are exactly the skills robots need to be truly useful in the real world.
Finishing the race is not the end. It’s the start for the growth of the robot industry.
41. What did some people joke the 2025 race was like?

42. How much faster was the 2026 winner than the 2025 winner?

②After getting his doctoral (博士的) degree, Chen made a special choice. He didn’t choose to work in a lab or a school. He took a job at a power company. “I don’t like office work,” he said. “I love being outside. Every day is different.”

A. doubts B. mistakes C. challenges D. changes
