Long long ago, there was a big rock in a family’s vegetable garden. It often made people trip over and get hurt. One day, the son asked, “Dad, why don’t we dig out that annoying (烦人的) stone?” The father replied, “That rock has been there since your grandfather’s time. It’s huge, and I have no clue how long it would take to dig it out. Instead of wasting time trying to remove (移开) it, it’s better to just be careful around it and let it teach you to think smarter.”
Years later, the boy grew up, got married and became a father himself. One day, his daughter complained (抱怨), “Dad, I really hate that big rock in the vegetable garden. Let’s hire someone to move it someday.” The father said, “No way! That rock is really heavy. If it could be moved, it would have been gone when I was a kid.” The daughter was upset because she’d tripped over it many times. So she decided to solve the problem. One morning, she grabbed a hoe (锄头) and a bucket of water. She poured water around the rock to soften the soil and waited for 10 minutes. Then, she used the hoe to loosen (松) the soil. She thought it would take all day to dig it out, but to her surprise, it only took a few minutes. The rock wasn’t as b… as they had thought. They had all been fooled by how large it seemed.
This shows that the things we think are holding us back are often made bigger by our own worries. Sometimes, it is the “stubborn stones” in our minds that stop us from discovering new solutions and opportunities.
32. Why didn’t the father want to dig out the rock at first?
A. Because he thought it was useful.
B. Because he liked the rock very much.

33. How did the daughter remove the rock?
A. She asked someone to move it.
B. She used a hoe and water to loosen the soil.
C. She waited for the father to help her.
D. She broke the rock into small pieces.
34. What is the proper word in the sentence “The rock wasn’t as b… as they had thought.”?
A. big B. bad C. broken D. beautiful
35. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Old things are always difficult to change.
B. We should ask for help when meeting difficulties.
C. We should be careful when walking in the garden.
D. The “stubborn stones” in our minds may stop us.
D
“The best way to know the unknown is to go there, experience it and feel it with your heart,” Du Mengran told Nature.
Called a “deep diver” by the famous science magazine, the 38-year-old Chinese scientist played an important role in the discovery of the world’s deepest-known animal ecosystem Earlier this month, she was named on Nature’s annual list of 10 people who helped shape science in 2025, along with Liang Wenfeng, 40, founder of AI company DeepSeek.
Du is a deep-sea scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She has been diving with submersibles (潜水器) since 2016. In 2024, she led a team to dive 24 times in the northern Pacific Ocean with the Fendouzhe submersible. The harsh winter there brought many difficulties for them. But there, they tried to find a special ecosystem. It does not get energy from sunlight, but from chemicals like methane (甲烷) coming out of the ocean floor.
This year, the team found more such ecosystems (made by chemicals) in the southern Pacific. “We used to think nothing could live in such bad conditions,” Du told Wenhui Daily.
Diving in the sea can be challenging. The water pressure at the bottom of the ocean is about 1,000 times as strong as that at sea level. So Fendouzhe is made of titanium (钛). Inside the submersible, there is only a 1.8-meter-wide space for three scientists. Seasickness is also a trouble. “When I heard I was named one of Nature’s 10, I couldn’t even celebrate because I was too worried about my team feeling seasick,” Du said.
However, deep-sea exploration may help answer many questions, such as how life began on Earth. For Du, all the hard work is valuable because of this.
36. What can we know about Du Mengran from the passage?
A. She is 40 years old.
B. She began diving with submersibles in 2016.
C. She has never felt uncomfortable during her diving.
D. She found the ecosystem alone in the southern Pacific.
37. What does the underlined word “harsh” probably mean?
A. Quiet and safe. B. Warm and wet.
C. Cool and boring. D. Difficult and terrible.
38. What problem did Du and her team meet?
A. Small space in the submersible.
B. Few vegetables and fruits.
C. Very low water pressure.
D. The team members’ homesickness.
39. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The difficulties of exploring the deep sea.
B. How Fendouzhe helps scientists explore the deep sea.
C. A short introduction to Du Mengran and her deep-sea research.
D. The discovery of the world’s deepest-known animal ecosystem.
40. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Du doesn’t want to work with others.
B. Du thinks deep-sea exploration is useless.
C. Du is afraid of challenges in the deep sea.
D. Du cares more about her team than her own honor.
Reflection learning (反思性学习) means thinking carefully about something to understand it better. It is not about being negative (负面的) — it’s about asking questions, making good choices, and learning from what you do.
Everyone reflects in their own way. There’s no one right way to do it. You don’t have to see it as extra homework. You can practice reflection anytime while you’re learning. Reflective learning can help you in many ways. First, it helps you plan and decide what to do first. With so many things like school, family, friends and hobbies, you can feel stressed. Reflection helps you manage your time and choose what’s most important. It also helps you set and reach goals. When you connect school goals to your life goals, you’ll feel more excited about learning.
Reflection can also help you stop putting things off and feel less stressed. By thinking about when and why you avoid tasks, you can change those habits and feel more confident. To reflect well, you can try tools like reflective journals (日志). In the journal, write what happened, what you did, what you learned and what you could do better. You can also include feedback (反馈), pictures or notes. Try to write often, focus on one topic, ask yourself questions and review your writing to find useful patterns. There are no wrong answers, so just be honest in your reflection and keep learning.
41. What is reflection learning about?

42. When can you practice reflection while you’re learning?

前文“had few chances”与后文“fell in love with climbing again”之间存在转折关系,尽管之前机会少,但后来重新爱上了攀岩,But符合。
此处为固定搭配“can’t imagine life without...”
根据前文“climb fast”以及后面的改变“planning my moves step by step”可知,作者一开始想要快速取得“进展,进步”,make progress“取得进步”,其他选项不符合“快”带来的结果。
根据后文“planning my moves step by step”可知,思考需要“仔细”。

根据前文“lose myself”可知,沉浸其中会“忘记”烦恼,forget about“忘记”符合,give up“放弃”、give away“赠送”、worry about“着急”均不符合攀岩时的情景。

C
C. Because his grandfather didn’t allow him to do it.
D. Because he thought it was huge and difficult to move.
D 33. B 34. A 35. D

C A short introduction to Du Mengran and her deep-sea research.
B 37. D 38. A 39. C 40. D

根据第三段“The harsh winter there brought many difficulties for them.”
根据第五段“Inside the submersible, there is only a 1.8-meter-wide space for three scientists.”
通读全文可知,文章主要介绍了科学家杜梦然入选《自然》杂志年度十大人物、她的深海研究工作、面临的困难以及研究的意义,C项“A short introduction to Du Mengran and her deep-sea research.”
根据第五段最后一句“When I heard I was named one of Nature’s 10, I couldn’t even celebrate because I was too worried about my team feeling seasick,”可知,杜梦然因担心团队晕船甚至无法庆祝自己的荣誉,由此可推断她更关心团队而非个人荣誉。
