I’m an English teacher. Recently, many of my students who have entered high school often ask me how to learn high school vocabulary well. For this, I always recommend the book Words You Should Know In High School to them.
It was written by Burton Jay Nadler, together with Jordan Nadler and Justin Nadler. The first edition (版本) came out on April 7, 2004, and a revised (修订) version was published in 2005.This book has over 1,000 important English words. It also shows you how to tell similar words apart, avoid common mistakes, and improve your spelling and grammar skills. The book uses a fun and easy style, so learning vocabulary is not boring at all.
Here is an interesting example from the book. The word “inscrutable” means “hard to understand”. Gathering for a shared meal is something all humans do. Whether it’s dinners with friends, parties, or holiday celebrations, eating together is so common in our social lives that we seldom consider its reasons. Why do humans enjoy a good meal together?
Sharing food as a behavior is likely to date back before the origin of our species (人类起源). Our closest relatives, chimpanzees (黑猩猩), share food too, but humans turned this into a special social event. The first group meals probably happened around campfires 1.8 million years ago. Cooking and sharing food brought people together and gave them more time to relax after dark.
Studies show eating with others makes us happier and helps us build friendships better. When we eat as a group, our brains give out “happy chemicals” called endorphins (内啡肽). This feel-good effect is even stronger when we do simple things at the same time, like picking up our chopsticks together or laughing at the same joke. Sharing meals also gives us chances to talk about our days, share stories, and feel more connected to the people around us.
All in all, sharing meals is a key part of human life. It connects us to others, lifts our spirits, and has been bringing people together for millions of years.
49. What do people think of sharing food nowadays?
A. It’s very common. B. It can avoid danger. C. It’s very convenient. D. It can reduce spending.
50. What is the difference between humans and chimpanzees in sharing food?
A. Chimpanzees share food only with their family.
B. Chimpanzees seldom share food with others.
C. Humans make food sharing a special social event.
D. Humans share food much earlier than chimpanzees.
51. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The history of sharing food. B. The advantages of sharing food.
C. The ways of sharing food. D. The changes of sharing food over time.
52. What’s the best title (标题) for the text?
A. Why We Need Food B. What Food We Enjoy Most
C. How We Have a Nice Meal D. Why We Eat Together

One day in class, the teacher held up a big red apple. Standing at the front of the class, she said, “Take a deep breath and tell me what you smell in the air!”
A girl happily put up her hand and said, “I can smell the sweet smell of the apple.” The teacher walked around the classroom and encouraged each student to sniff (嗅) the air again. Half of the students raised their hands to show they could smell it. The teacher returned to the front of the classroom. She asked once again if the students could smell the apple. Everyone, except a quiet little boy, put up their hands. The teacher went up to the boy and asked, “You really can’t smell the apple?” The boy shook his head and said, “No, I can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a real apple.” The teacher smiled at the boy and said to the class, “He is right! This isn’t a real apple.”
The students’ eyes widened in surprise. They also might have thought that the apple was not real, but they didn’t feel sure enough to trust their own judgement (判断) or brave enough to speak their mind.
These words are helpful for daily study, tests like the SAT exam and so on. It doesn’t just tell you what words mean. It also shows you how to tell similar words apart, avoid common mistakes, and improve your spelling and grammar skills. The book uses a fun and easy style, so learning vocabulary is not boring at all.
Here is an interesting example from the book. The word “inscrutable” means “hard to understand”. The book gives a clear sentence: “The Mona Lisa’s inscrutable smile has made people think for hundreds of years.” This example links the word to a famous painting, so it is easier for students to remember.
39. When did the first edition of the book come out?
A. In 2004. B. In 2005. C. In 2006. D. In 2007.
40. What can the book help you do?
①Tell similar words apart. ②Avoid common mistakes.
③Know English culture. ④Improve spelling skills.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
41. What is the function (功能) of the last paragraph?

根据原文第二段第5句“It also shows you how to tell similar words apart, avoid common mistakes, and improve your spelling and grammar skills.”,可知①②④均是这本书的作用,原文未提及“了解英语文化”,故排除③。

根据原文第三段第1句“Here is an interesting example from the book.”,可知最后一段通过举“inscrutable”这个单词的例子,说明这本书的记忆方法,因此作用是“给我们举一个例子”。

52. What’s the best title (标题) for the text?

hides##ides
【解析】
【详解】句意:我奶奶每天早上在我的铅笔盒里藏一颗糖。根据首字母和提示词“藏”可知,此处应填动词hide;再由“every morning”可知,该句描述经常性动作,应用一般现在时,主语“My grandma”为第三人称单数,故动词用第三人称单数形式hides。
60. It’s so b________ (勇敢的) of you to help your classmates to fight against bullying.
【答案】
brave##rave
【解析】
【详解】句意:你帮助同学们对抗欺凌,真是太勇敢了。句中“so”是副词,后面需要形容词修饰,结合“help your classmates to fight against bullying”及首字母为b可知,应是说你太勇敢了,brave“勇敢的”,符合语境。

例文
Dear Mike,
Glad to know you’re coming to our school fun fair.
I’m really happy to be your tour guide. I’ve picked two activities I think you’ll love. First, we’ll go to the Chinese traditional painting show. You can see beautiful ink paintings and even try drawing yourself, which fits your love for Chinese traditional culture. Then we’ll join the food tasting activity, where you can try many kinds of delicious Chinese food. I know you love tasting Chinese food, so this will be perfect for you. I’m sure we’ll have a great time!
Yours,
Li Hui
