One day, my friend Mareya called. “Nora, I will travel to Hawaii. There’ll be beaches, sandcastles …” she said. I was happy for her but envied (忌妒) her a little. “Oh, well,” I thought, “I will have a hiking trip with Olivia. That will also be very interesting.”
Later that day, I learned Olivia would visit her uncle’s new beach house. So we had to put off our hiking trip. “I’m really sorry. But you understand, right?” she said. “Oh, sure,” I said. I tried to push the corners of my mouth into a smile, but inside, my heart was sinking.
At that time, I saw Mrs Daisy in her garden. I offered to help her water the flowers in the hope of taking my mind off unpleasant feelings. Watering the flowers made me feel good, but I still couldn’t stop wishing. I could also be on holiday with my friends.
“Be careful!” Mrs Daisy said. “That is a harmful plant. I’ll get it out of here.” Suddenly, I realized what I was watering. Mrs Daisy was aware of my bad mood, smiled at me and said, “Dear Nora, plants or feelings, we should watch what we’re watering, right? If we nourish the harmful plants or bad feelings, then that’s what we have. But if we try to nourish the beautiful flowers or good feelings, then that’s what we get. Just let yourself feel all of your feelings. After a while, you can try feeding your mind with happier thoughts. Talk to a friend, go for a run or just enjoy the beauty of a flower.”
I thought Mrs Daisy’s advice was worth trying. So I called Olivia at once. After sharing my feelings with her, I cheered up again and we both agreed to have our hiking trip after she came back.
5. How did Nora feel when she knew about two friends’ plans?
A. Curious. B. Excited. C. Angry. D. Unhappy.
6. Nora helped Mrs Daisy water the flowers because ________.
A. Mrs Daisy needed her help B. Nora wanted to cheer herself up
C. Mrs Daisy could pay her money D. Nora liked working with flowers
7. What does the underlined word “nourish” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Put something away. B. Leave something alone.
C. Help something grow. D. Make something disappear.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. Watering flowers to change moods. B. Helping others to plan a trip.
C. Getting along well with our friends. D. Dealing with our feelings properly.
【答案】5. D 6. B 7. C 8. D
根据第三段“I offered to help her water the flowers in the hope of taking my mind off unpleasant feelings.”

What catches your eye when you’re shopping for new shoes? That’s what Cheresse Thornhill-Goldson wants to know. She’s a sneaker (运动鞋) designer. She has designed footwear for players and many others. Now she advises students to follow in her footsteps.
Thornhill-Goldson started drawing sneakers in the fifth grade. Her interest in drawing led her to a high school for art and design. There, she met a former student. He had gone on to work for a famous sneaker company. He showed her that designing sneakers could be a career. After college, she got a job at that company.
Colors, materials, shapes. A lot goes into designing a sneaker. But Thornhill-Goldson mainly pays attention to two things. “How is it going to allow someone to perform at their highest level?” she said. She also thinks about what she wants someone to feel when wearing the shoes. “If I want someone to feel like Batman… maybe my color palette (调色板) is all black,” she said.
Today, Thornhill-Goldson works for a program that teaches people about the sneaker design industry. One of its goals is diversity (多样性). The program opens the door to students who don’t have chances to design. “I know the power that one person can have to change someone’s life,” she said. “And I want to be that for other people.”
Her advice to kids is simple. “Follow the thing that makes you smile.”

Experts believe that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants, as we know them, have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There were eating places travelers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns (旅店) that would serve food. And there were taverns (酒馆) where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a “restaurant”
A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups. On his sign he used the word “restaurant” to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help “restore (恢复)” your health so he called the soups “restaurants”. Soon, people started buying Boulanger’s soups even when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word “restaurant” to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself. More “restaurants” opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often. Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup.
In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By the mid-1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops. Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. The British began to copy the French, and the restaurant idea spread throughout the British Empire. Today cities are filled with all types of restaurants. Diners have millions of options (选择权) from which to choose.
13. What can we know about eating places before 1765?

B. Inns and taverns could be called restaurants.
C. Wealthy people had private cooks to make meals.
D. Menus were widely used in eating places.
14. Why did Boulanger call his soups “restaurants”?
A. The soups were very popular in Paris. B. The soups were thought to restore health.
C. He wanted to create a new name for his shop. D. He sold soups only to sick people.
15. When did menus start to appear in restaurants?
A. In the 1600s. B. In the 1790s. C. In the 1800s. D. In the 1990s.
16. What is the passage mainly about?

Most people have an inner (内心的) voice. It’s the discussion that goes on inside your head. What you say to yourself will make a difference to how you think, feel and act, so it’s worth paying attention to.
Your inner voice is always with you. You may notice it when you make a mistake or when you try something new. ____17____ Sometimes it sounds kind but at other times it may sound scary. Whatever it sounds like, we should treat it with kindness.
____18____ If you keep telling yourself you’re not good at making friends or you’re not creative, over time you’ll believe your inner voice is true. When you talk to yourself using a sentence like “I have to clean my room.”, it makes the task harder. Instead, if you say, “I choose to clean my room, and then I’ll feel comfortable and find my things easily.”, it’s more positive. ____19____
But how to treat your inner voice? Trying to be friends with your inner voice can give you more energy. For example, when you make a mistake, you may feel afraid. You think you may be criticized (批评). ____20____ You can learn from the mistakes and try to avoid making the same mistakes next time.
When you do something that makes you feel nervous, encourage yourself to go ahead bravely. If you are not sure what to say, imagine you’re talking to your best friends and trying to support and help them.

I’m pleased that the school newspaper has created a new column for all the ninth-graders. Last term, I failed a math exam. I was overconfident and spent little time reviewing and even played video games instead. When I saw my low score, I felt very disappointed. The main reason for my failure was my laziness and lack of preparation. This experience taught me valuable lessons. First, I learned that no one can succeed without hard work. Second, I realized that failure is not the end but a chance to improve. Now, I study more diligently and never take anything for granted. I believe failure has made me grow stronger.

C. Getting along well with our friends. D. Dealing with our feelings properly.

A. There were no places to eat or drink at that time.
A. How restaurants developed. B. What made a good restaurant.
C. Who created the first restaurant. D. Why restaurants became popular.

In Shanghai, a new type of intelligent nursing home has opened its doors. It is trying to solve some problems caused by an aging society. One of the most special things here is the use of emotional companion robots (情感陪伴机器人).
These robots are of great help to the elderly. With advanced AI technology (先进的人工智能技术), they can recognize various human emotions. When an old person is feeling lonely, the robot can notice the change and start a friendly conversation. It can also repeat the old stories the old man loves to recall (回忆), or play his favorite music. This not only helps the elderly feel less lonely but also improves their mental health.
The robots can also help solve the shortage of nursing staff (护理人员). In the past, nursing homes often faced difficulties because there were not enough workers to take care of all the elderly. But now, these robots can complete some simple tasks. They can remind the elderly to take their medicine on time, for example.
The use of these robots in the nursing home is a great success. It shows that technology can play an important role in improving the quality of life for the elderly. And it also gives us hope for better solutions to the problems of an aging society in the future.
