“We had the experience but missed the meaning,” T.S. Eliot wrote in 1941. Recently, I’ve been thinking the same about my four years at Stanford.
Some things were immediately obvious: that the world was more interesting than I had guessed; that not everything I had learned in high school was true; that I would never live in a more beautiful place than the Foothills by the Bay.
But other meanings didn’t show up for a very long time. As an English major, I read King Lear three times, but I didn’t connect with the play until I became a professor and had to teach it. Only then did I begin to feel the weight of Lear’s sorrow and regret.
Marjorie Perloff, then a rising star, introduced me to poet Frank O’Hara. At 18, I hadn’t lived enough to figure out what he was writing about. I hadn’t learned to appreciate the art of his seeming artlessness. He just seemed lazy.
In 1992, my senior year, Perloff hosted a conference on a composer known for his rule-breaking style, John Cage. Deep down, I considered Cage a harmless pretender. His most famous piece, 4’33’’, centers on one or more musicians doing nothing at all. It reminded me of a Batman show where an empty painting wins an art competition.
It wasn’t until my 50s that I made an effort to understand Cage. I was writing a book about creativity. It was time to give him a second listen. I learned that his approach changed after reading the I Ching, a Chinese text that gives meaning to random (随机的) numbers. Cage used coin tosses (抛硬币) to choose notes—random in note height, length, and volume. He wanted listeners to hear sound, not tune.
You can study Cage and still not enjoy his music. Perloff once said he might be remembered more for his writings than his music. Her frankness was relieving then and still is.
Some meanings take time.
24. What does the author imply about the experience of reading King Lear?
A. He disagreed with the themes in the play.
B. He was fond of reading classics in college.
C. He turned a professor to understand the play.
D. He finally got the play’s message later in life.
25. What does the author think of John Cage’s music at first?
A. Empty and without art. B. Suggestive of movies.
C. Pioneering in styling. D. Worth listening to again.
26. What made the author give John Cage’s music a second listen?
A. His research for a book on creativity. B. Cage’s experimental approach to music.
C. His interest in other musicians’ opinions. D. The I Ching’s influence on Cage’s music.
27. What is the author trying to express in this article?
A. What he experienced at Stanford. B. Why music styles are important.
C. What Eliot’s view on writing is. D. How his views changed over time.
C
The start of a new year is often seen as a chance for personal change. But many people today feel less motivated (有积极性的) than before. With mental health (心理健康) going down, especially among young people, imagining change can be hard. My research focuses on “possibility thinking” — how people see what could be different and feel able to act. A 2024 study found that these elements need to support each other. When people see opportunities but feel unable to act, or feel motivated but can’t imagine other ways, real change is difficult.
In a 2025 study, teachers learned their school would be pulled down and they had to move. Most felt tired, not excited. This shows how unjust (不公的) or unsupported changes make people resist (抵制) new beginnings. Many years of research show that motivation is shaped by context. Time pressure, money stress, and daily responsibilities all limit what people can change, no matter how strong their intentions are. Instead of aiming for big changes, it’s more realistic to ask what small changes are possible. For example, someone with limited time might try a 10-minute daily walk and change it based on what works.
Research also shows that shared responsibility helps keep the change going. A family might agree to eat more home-cooked meals, with each person taking on a small task. That way, change is carried by the group, not just one person. In a world full of the unknown, we can’t rely on “starting fresh” to find new energy. Instead, we can renew ourselves by thinking in new ways—together with others, within our limits, and with hope for small but positive changes.
28. What is necessary for “possibility thinking” to work well?
A. Support among its key parts. B. Exploration of new things.
C. Belief in one’s ability to act. D. Strong personal motivation.
29. Why does the author mention the study of teachers moving to a new school?
A. To show why people resist new beginnings.
B. To explain how people adapt to sudden changes.
C. To explore what encourages people to start over.
D. To show how unfair changes kill the desire for a fresh start.
30. What have many years of studies found about changes?
A. Shared goals are harder to achieve. B. It depends mainly on determination.
C. It is affected by one’s environment. D. Money pressure is the biggest problem.
31. What does the author suggest for making changes in the last paragraph?
A. Keeping learning to stay motivated. B. Making small changes within your limits.
C. Relying on others to support your goals. D. Aiming for big changes by ignoring limits.
D
A French auctioneer sold a 200-year-old violin bow (弓) made by François Xavier Tourte, regarded as the Antonio Stradivari of bow-making, for a record €576,000. Tourte was among the first to keep using a raw material that is still prized today for the best bows: pernambuco, or brazilwood.
A modern orchestra (管弦乐团) is a group of dancing brazilwood sticks (木棍). And that’s a problem. Cutting down, growth of cities and farms have greatly reduced Brazil’s Atlantic forest, where the tree grows, to an eighth of its former area. The number of wild trees has dropped by four fifths in less than a century. As a result, CITES, an international agreement, has limited trade in brazilwood products since 2007.
But Brazil’s government wants CITES to list the trees among the most endangered species, giving them the highest protection. A CITES meeting in Samarkand that starts on November 24th will decide whether to do so. The proposal has spooked those working on Tourte’s bows and the musicians who depend on them. Lovers of art and lovers of nature are often soulmates, but brazilwood is driving them apart.
The protection upgrade Brazil wants would make life difficult for them and for musicians. Any bow, even one of Tourte’s, would require papers to go from Brazil to other countries. Workers are still cutting down brazilwood trees illegally to supply the bow-making industry, Brazil’s environmental department says.
However, it can be possible to save both brazilwood and bows. Around 3 million trees have been planted since the early 1970s, some with the help of bow-makers. Some of these could be harvested after 30-40 years of growth to make bows as the existing supplies of brazilwood run out. Wild trees need better protection, and governments and musicians can do better at registering existing supplies of brazilwood and keeping track of bows. If that can happen, there is a chance to save an invaluable tree without silencing the music.
32. Why is the use of brazilwood in modern orchestras a problem?
A. Brazilwood bows are too expensive.
B. Too many brazilwood sticks are wasted.
C. Brazilwood trees have become much fewer.
D. CITES has completely stopped brazilwood trading.
33. What does the underlined word “spooked” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Inspired. B. Balanced. C. Considered. D. Concerned.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It is key to prevent brazilwood trees from disappearing.
B. Proper measures can make brazilwood and bows coexist.
C. Low-cost materials for making bows are highly demanded.
D. There are enough wild brazilwood trees for bow-making now.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Violin Bow-Making
B. The Environmental Value of Brazilwood
C. The Tension Between Valuable Wood and Bow-Making
D. The Efforts Made by CITES to Protect Endangered Species
During puberty (青春期), your body goes through many changes, and you start forming a body image — how you see, think, and feel about your body’s size, shape, and weight, or specific features like your nose. 36 For instance, you may believe your nose is too big or too small, even though it looks perfectly normal.
37 One major influence is peer (同龄人) pressure. Your friends might make casual jokes about your appearance, or you might compare yourself to them and feel they look better. Such experiences can harm the way you view yourself. Another powerful influence is the media, which often promotes a narrow, ideal body type. For example, if fair skin is portrayed as beautiful, you may feel insecure if you don’t match that ideal.
Developing a negative body image can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as extreme dieting, overexercising, or even risky plastic surgeries. 38 When you focus too much on appearance, you may forget to appreciate other great things about yourself, such as your talents and personality.
To build a positive body image, it’s essential to remember that no perfect body exists, as beauty standards are always changing. Models and celebrities may appear perfect in the media, but much of their appearance is due to makeup, angles, lighting, and editing. 39
Rather than focusing on appearances, value people for their true selves. By surrounding yourself with positive influences and avoiding comments on looks, you can redirect your attention from self-criticism. 40 Over time, you’ll build inner confidence and develop a healthier, more accepting relationship with your body.
A. Many factors shape your body image.
B. It also lowers your overall life satisfaction.
C. External judgement can be a double-edged sword.
D. However, your true beauty lies within your heart.
E. Without these tricks, they are just as “imperfect” as everyone else.
F. Surprisingly, body image is shaped more by your thoughts than by reality.
G. This shift enables you to recognize and celebrate your talents and strengths.

Something magical is happening this summer: a group of high school students from the Golden Connections Club gather at Olive Community Services and learn some new skills—not from videos, but from real grandmas.
The concept is quite simple: seniors teach kids 41 skills that once filled every household: sewing (缝纫), ironing, cooking, and more.
For Leena Albinali, a high school student and the club’s founder, this isn’t just an activity. It’s a 42 to bridge the gap between generations, while giving her peers (同龄人) a chance to 43 with elders, twice a week, in a(n) 44 way.

No one had ever mistaken Jake for a model student. At 17, he was known for skipping classes (逃课), staying out late, and pushing almost everyone away. Teachers sighed at his attitude; his parents worried endlessly. Deep down, Jake hated who he’d become — but he didn’t know how to change.
One icy November afternoon, Jake cut school again and wandered into a quiet, old library downtown. He planned to hide there until his parents calmed down. But as he stepped inside, he noticed an elderly woman sitting alone at a wooden table, surrounded by piles of books. Her hands trembled as she tried to reach a thick dictionary on the highest shelf.
Without thinking, Jake walked over and held out the book. The woman looked up, surprised, but her eyes softened immediately. “Thank you, young man,” she said gently. “No one has offered to help me in days.”
Her name was Mrs. Henderson, and she came to the library every week to organize old books for children who couldn’t afford new ones. She had once been a teacher, but now she lived alone and struggled with weak knees and poor eyesight. Still, she refused to stop volunteering. “Kindness is like a light,” she told Jake. “Even the smallest spark can brighten someone’s darkest days.”
Jake listened, speechless. For the first time in years, someone spoke to him like a person, not a troublemaker. He stayed and helped her carry books, sort pages, and reach high shelves. When he left, Mrs. Henderson pressed a small, handmade card into his hand. It read: You have a kind heart. Don’t ever let anyone make you forget that.
That night, Jake lay awake for hours. The card burned in his pocket, and Mrs. Henderson’s words echoed (回响) in his mind. For the first time, he wanted to be better — not for his parents or teachers, but for himself.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m truly excited about the upcoming program “Song of the Day”. I believe it will not only enrich our campus life but also provide a perfect chance to improve our English through music.
To make it more engaging, I suggest songs be introduced based on weekly themes, such as “Movie Soundtracks”. Moreover, it would be a good idea to invite students to recommend their favorite songs to boost interaction. Plus, adding background information would help us better understand and appreciate the songs.
Hope my suggestions can be of some help. Meanwhile, I’m eagerly anticipating the launch of the program.
Yours,
Li Hua
The next afternoon, Jake returned to the library with a single purpose in his heart. He walked straight to Mrs. Henderson and offered to help with her daily work. He carried heavy boxes of books, arranged shelves neatly, and even read stories aloud to young children who came to the library. Mrs. Henderson watched him with warm, proud eyes, saying nothing but smiling gently. In that quiet space, Jake felt a sense of peace and belonging he had never known before.
From that day on, everything in Jake’s life began to change. He stopped skipping classes and started working hard at school. He made amends with his parents and even volunteered at the library every weekend. The tiny card Mrs. Henderson gave him remained on his desk, a gentle reminder of his true self. Jake finally realized that kindness was not just about helping others — it was the key to saving himself.
The next afternoon, Jake returned to the library with a single purpose in his heart. He pushed open the library door carefully, the smell of old books and warm light welcoming him. Seeing Mrs. Henderson struggling to lift a heavy box, he rushed forward immediately and held it steadily. He sorted the worn books gently, placed them on the right shelves and even helped clean the dusty tables. Whenever Mrs. Henderson praised him, a faint but sincere smile appeared on his face. For the first time, he felt needed and valued, as if a long-lost light had shone back into his life.
From that day on, everything in Jake’s life began to change. He stopped wandering the streets and started attending classes attentively, taking notes carefully and asking questions bravely. He apologized to his parents sincerely and communicated with them patiently instead of shutting them out. The handmade card was placed on his desk, reminding him every day of the kindness that had saved him. Jake finally realized that everyone could make a fresh start, and that a single warm word or small act could turn a dark life around completely.

A篇21-23 BBC
Tour 1(Saturday, 15th July, at 10:00)、Tour 3(Saturday, 15th July, at 07:00) 、Tour 2(Sunday, 16th July, at 18:00) 、Tour 4(Sunday, 16th July, at 09:30)。
26.A文中:"I was writing a book about creativity. It was time to give him a second listen."
27.D全文围绕some meanings take time,通过阅读Shakespeare, O’Hara, Cage的作品经历说明观点随人生阶段而改变。
根据第一段“A 2024 study found that these elements need to support each other. When people see opportunities but feel unable to act, or feel motivated but can’t imagine other ways, real change is difficult.(2024年的一项研究发现,这些要素需要相互支持。当人们看到机会但觉得无法行动,或者有动力但无法想象其他选择时,真正的改变就很难实现)”可知,“可能性思维”要良好发挥作用,其关键部分之间的相互支持是必要的。
【29题详解】推理判断题。根据第二段“In a 2025 study, teachers learned their school would be torn down and they had to move. Most felt tired, not excited. This shows how unjust or unsupported changes make people resist new beginnings.(在2025年的一项研究中,老师们得知所在学校将要拆除,他们必须搬迁。大多数人感到身心疲惫,毫无欣喜之感。这表明不公平或无支持的改变是如何使人们抗拒新起点的)”可知,作者提到教师搬到新学校的研究,是为了说明不公平的改变会扼杀人们对新起点的渴望。
【30题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段“Decades of research show that motivation is shaped by context. Time pressure, money stress, and daily responsibilities all limit what people can change, no matter how strong their intentions are.(数十年的研究表明,动机是由环境塑造的。时间压力、经济压力和日常责任都限制了人们能做出的改变,无论他们的意愿有多强烈)”可知,数十年的研究发现改变受个人所处环境的影响。
【31题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段“Instead, we can renew ourselves by thinking in new ways—together with others, within our limits, and with hope for small but positive changes.(相反,我们可以通过新的思维方式来自我更新——与他人一起,在我们的能力范围内,并对微小但积极的改变抱有希望)”可知,作者在最后一段建议在自身能力范围内进行小改变。
根据第二段“Cutting down, urban expansion and farming have greatly reduced Brazil’s Atlantic forest, where the tree grows, to an eighth of its former area. The number of wild trees has dropped by four fifths in less than a century. As a result, CITES, an international agreement, has limited trade in brazilwood products since 2007.(砍伐、城市扩张和农业发展已使巴西大西洋森林(巴西苏木生长的地方)面积大幅减少,仅为原来的八分之一。在不到一个世纪的时间里,野生树木数量减少了五分之四。因此,自2007年起,国际协议CITES限制了巴西苏木产品的贸易)”可知,现代管弦乐团使用巴西苏木成为问题的原因是巴西苏木树数量急剧减少,故选C项。
【33题详解】词义猜测题。根据第三段“The proposal has spooked those working on Tourte’s craft and the musicians who depend on it. Lovers of art and lovers of nature are often soulmates, but brazilwood is separating them.(这项提议使从事图尔特工艺的人和依赖它的音乐家感到______。艺术爱好者和自然爱好者通常是志同道合的人,但巴西苏木正将他们分开)”以及第四段“The protection upgrade Brazil wants would make life difficult for them and for musicians.(巴西想要的保护升级将给他们和音乐家的生活带来困难)”可知,巴西将巴西苏木列为最濒危物种的提议让制作小提琴弓的人和音乐家感到担忧,D选项“Concerned.(担忧的)”符合语境。故选D项。
【34题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, it can be possible to save both brazilwood and bows. Around 3 million trees have been planted since the early 1970s, some with the help of bow-makers. Some of these could be harvested after 30-40 years of growth to make bows as the existing supplies of brazilwood run out. Wild trees need better protection, and governments and musicians can do better at registering existing supplies of brazilwood and keeping track of bows.(然而,拯救巴西苏木和小提琴弓是有可能的。
C选项“The Tension Between Valuable Wood and Bow-Making(珍贵木材与弓制作之间的矛盾)”能概括文章主旨,为最佳标题。
后文分别提到“One major influence is peer pressure”(同伴压力)和“Another powerful influence is the media”(媒体影响)。
B 项中的“also”表示补充,与上文构成递进关系,且“lowers life satisfaction”与后文“forget to appreciate other great things”语义连贯。
G 项中的“recognize and celebrate your talents and strengths”正是这种转变带来的具体结果,也是建立自信的途径。

Text 1
W: They seem to think I am one of the models.
M: That’s right. The model’s dresses are red; so is yours.
W: I’d better wear blue or yellow tomorrow.
Text 2
W: Do you think we’ll have a nice summer this year?
M: Due to global warming, it could be hotter than ever!
Text 3
M: How are you going to the airport, Susan?
W: I’m going to take the bus. A taxi’s too expensive.
M: There’s a train you can get. It’s very fast.
W: That’s only at the weekends.
Text 4
W: Professor, I’m having problems making this water look real.
M: Give me your brush for a moment. Watch me add just a few shadows here.
Text 5
M: What can I do for you, madam?
W: Well, I quite like the chicken, but I’ve had a lot lately and I can’t make up my mind. What do you recommend?
M: Would you like to try the fish? It is recommended by the cook today.
W: Fish it is, then.
Text 6
M: Linda, can I bring my friend Charlie with us to the theater tomorrow?
W: Does he work at a sports center? I think I met him at Anna’s house a few months ago. He likes skiing, doesn’t he?
M: That’s right.
W: Sure, well, bring him along, James. It will be nice to see him again.
M: And Charlie’s got a car, so he’ll be able to take you home at the end of the evening.
W: Oh, that would be good.
Text 7
M: I can’t believe it’s almost New Year’s Eve! Are you going to do anything special this year?
W: Well, we’re not going to Trafalgar Square again!
M: I agree! It was so cold last year!
W: And we were ill for days after that... How about going to a party at a fancy hotel?
M: Yeah, and a few hours after “Happy New Year!” and an expensive bill and a wallet with nothing in it! No, thanks ...
W: You are right. We’re short of cash at the moment. Emm, maybe we can discuss it tomorrow.
Text 8
W: How on earth did you fall out of the window?
M: I was sitting with my mother in the living room playing with my toys. My sister started crying in the bedroom, and my mom went to take care of her. So I pushed a chair near a window and climbed on top to have a look outside. And while I was standing by the window, my biscuit fell out of my mouth. I tried to catch it, lost my balance and fell.
W: Oh, my goodness! Do you remember the fall?
M: It was all very quick, but I remember lying on the ground with people all around me. And then I saw my mom. She was hopeless, because she thought I was dead, but all I had was a broken leg. I was very lucky.
W: Surely you’re a lucky boy. Be more careful next time.
Text 9
M: So Tania, welcome.
W: Thank you, it’s great to be here.
M: Tania, you’ve just finished your first film, where you acted Angie, a 16-year-old girl. May I have your age, please?
W: I’m one year older than Angie.
M: You’ve been to the opening night. What was it like seeing yourself on screen?
W: Well, before I went to the opening I thought it might be scary, but it wasn’t in the end. I could remember how many times I’d had to do the scene, how much of me had gone into it. I certainly wasn’t bored watching the film, even though I knew it so well.
M: And were there any similarities between you and Angie?
W: Yeah, well, it would be nice to think so! She often doesn’t follow normal rules, and I’m a lot like that. She doesn’t really care what people think about her though; however, I do. Also she’s much more confident than me.
M: How did you play the role so well?
W: I tried to act as Angie at any time. That’s how I really got into the role.
M: OK, Tania, let’s take a break and then we continue talking about your new film.
Text 10
W: Good morning, everyone. I’m your guide for today. We’ve made a change to the trip. I hope none of you will mind. We’re still going to visit the beautiful town of Brampton with its old university. But today, because we have a lot of children here this week, we’re also going to a wildlife park. On the way to Brampton, we’ll drive through some beautiful countryside. We’ll go over the mountain and we’ll have a lovely view of the lake from the top. In the next valley, we’ll have a break for coffee. There’s a cafe near a beautiful waterfall and if any of you want to go for a walk, you can. We’ll get to Brampton at about 11:30. We’ll start by taking a guided tour of the university. There’ll be time for all of you to have a look at the shops. Most people come to Brampton nowadays for the shops, but it’s the university that made the town famous. If you don’t want to look at the shops, I suggest you visit the museum. After lunch, we’ll get back and go to the wildlife park. We need to stay in the bus while we drive around because we’ll see lions in the park, which can obviously be dangerous. I’ve never seen tigers there and I’m afraid they no longer have any monkeys. Now then, before we get on the bus, if anyone wants to ask any questions I’ll try to answer them.
