Every country has different everyday ways and cultural customs. To get to know American life, it pays to know certain habits most native-born Americans share.
Greetings
Americans shake hands firmly with each other when first introduced, or when they meet again, but rarely when they part (a more European custom). Social kissing, as a greeting, accompanied by a light body hug, is also sometimes acceptable between men and women who know each other well and among women. American men rarely hug each other or kiss on both cheeks.
Distance and Eye Contact
When two Americans are standing and talking to each other, they stay at least 16 inches away from each other, farther away than is customary in many other cultures. An American may feel threatened if you come too close, even if such a distance is perfectly ordinary in your own culture. Touching is not recommended, but making full eye contact at the first meeting stage is basic. Americans tend to warm up to people who smile, especially when the smile is accompanied by full eye contact.
Getting to the Point
When asking an American for something, especially when dealing with sales help in stores and markets, too much small talk is not required as in some other countries. A brief “"excuse me" is usually enough to get the person's attention, say, when asking for directions. Americans may feel threatened and become suspicious (起疑心的) if a stranger begins with a general “hello, how are you?" and does not get to the point directly. Americans do exchange humorous greetings among people they already know, but even then they are likely to get to the point relatively quickly.
21. Which of the following do American men hardly do when they meet?
A. Shaking hands B. Kissing on checks.
C.Keeping a distance. D.Having eye contact.
22. What may an American feel if you stay 5 inches away from him?
A. Threatened. B. Connected. C.Respected. D.Delighted
23. What should a stranger say first if he wants to ask an American for directions?
A. Excuse me. B.Hello, how are you?
C. What's your name? D.Can you help me?

When I was a high school student,I was faced with the world with the innocence that only come youth.I had always been fascinated by the idea of learning a new language, but I had never truly understood the challenges involved. That was until one day.when I decided to take the risk and learn Spanish.
It all started when I visited my cousin in Spain.Watching her effortlessly communicate with locals in their native language. I was filled with envy.I realized that, despite my ability to speak English and French, I was still missing an important tool: a deep understanding of another major language.
So,I did what any determined teenager would do:I set out to learn Spanish.I downloaded language learning apps, bought textbooks, and even signed up for private classes. Actually,it was not easy! The grammar rules were different, the vocabulary unfamiliar, and the pronunciation challenging
But I refused to give up. I spent hours listening to Spanish music and watching Spanish language movies. I role-played with my teacher. speaking aloud and making mistakes. Gradually, the language started to feel more natural. Months passed, and my hard work began to pay off. My Spanish improved, and I felt confident enough to try speaking it in real-life situations. The first time I order a meal in a restaurant, I felt like an explorer conquering a new land.
Now, when I look back on that version of myself,I can't help but feel proud. It might have taken months of hard work and late-night study sessions, but in the end.the journey was more than worth it. It has given me a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me.

C. Gifted and curious.
D. Generous and easy-going.

C
Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系)groups developed their own patterns(模式)of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke
perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages also became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalization and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages, the Americas about 1,000, Africa 2,400, and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number ( 中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction, with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon ( eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico (150) , Lipan Apache in the United States (two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark) : None of these seems to have much chance of survival.
28.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?
A. They had similar patterns.
B. They were large in number.
C. They developed very fast.
D. They were closely connected.
29.Which of the following best explains “dominant” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Formal. B. Modern. C. Advanced. D. Powerful.
30. How many languages are spoken by less than 6000 people at present?
A. About 6,800. B. About 3,400. C. About 2,400. D. About 1,200
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A. New languages will be created.
B. Geography determines language evolution.
C. Peoples lifestyles are reflected in languages.
D. Human development results in fewer languages.
D
Research on the effects of age on language learning often leads to conclusion that it's impossible to learn a language after the age of 18, yet there's no scientific proof for this saying. While certain language processing functions work best during childhood, others develop later, with some even experiencing a new growth between the ages of 50 and 75.
The definition of language learning and its goals also play an important role. If the aim is to talk easily in daily social situations, research suggests that fluency in a new language can be achieved at any age with enough study.
Learning a language at different stages of life comes with advantages and disadvantages. If you start before 10, you may be able to get a native-like accent. But if you start teaching a second language to a child late in their verbal (言语的) development, there may be challenges.
Between the ages of 10 and 18, there is a special chance to understand grammar and develop an understanding of a new language's rules. Language learning during this period can also make you more confident and encourage a positive attitude towards language changes.
When you study another language in adulthood, you may do more translation and think in your native language first. You may also feel nervous and be slow to speak. But adults have advantages too. They have great communication skills, know more about literature, and understand society and culture better.
Leaning a new language at the age of 50 and above may be easier because some of their mental skills keep getting better until they are in mid-to-late 70s. This age group can quickly learn the basics of a language, although more research is needed to be sure.
In summary, while some things may become harder with age, there is no age limit for language learning. Even if you make some mistakes, reaching an intermediate level in a language can be good. Starting early can improve your pronunciation and grammar. But using the language all your life is very important if you want to speak it well. Ultimately, it's never too late to start or relearn a language.
32. In which situation can one achieve fluency in a new language at any age?
A. In grammar class. B. In writing practice.
C. In vocabulary research. D. In everyday communication.
33. Which of the following can we learn about language learning?
A. Early learning delays children's language development.
B. Learning during teenage years helps build up confidence.
C. Learners beyond fifty can get knowledge quickly.
D. Learning in adulthood helps to study translation skills.
34. Which of the following statements might agree with the conclusion mentioned about language learning?
A. Starting early may cause challenges.
B. There is no age limit for successful language learning.
C. Only born learners can achieve fluency in a new language.
D. Mistakes in language learning are unacceptable for progress.
35. What's the best title for the text?
A. Why Language Learning Has Age Limits
B.Why Age Plays a Vital Role in Language Learning
C.How Language Learning Limits Us in Different Ages
D. How Language Learning Changes Depending on Your Age

Curtis Whitson knew Arroyo Seco very well. He had been to the camping site across the river many times with his friends.
But this time, it was different. Now he was with family: his wife and his 13-year-old son. And as they approached the river late in the afternoon, he found that the usually quiet river had turned wild due to a heavy rain two days before. It was impossible for them to cross the river to reach the camping site or return because it was too late.
“We cannot camp in the wildness and I have to send out a message for rescue,” Whitson thought.
He looked around and found a stick. He pulled out his pocket knife and carved "Help" in it. Then he tied a red rope to catch people's attention. He threw it into the river, but it did not float far and got stuck.
“Why not try your luck with our green Nalgene water bottle and put a note in it?” suggested his wife.
Whitson did as he was told and carved the word "Help" on it before he threw the bottle into the river. This time, it worked perfectly.
"All right, we have tried our best to get help," Whitson said. "But we should not just wait in this dangerous wildness in case..."
They walked up and down along the river bank for about 30 minutes and found a flat place to set up their tents. They collected enough dead branches and wood to keep a campfire going on all night. As the darkness closed in, they placed on the top of the camp a headlamp with its flashing light on. They waited until 10:30 pm. But nothing happened. So they went to bed. Before turning in, Whitson added more wood to the fire to keep the dangerous animals away.

第四部分 写作
第一节(给学习汉语的建议)
Dear Mark,
I know from your e-mail that you are learning Chinese this semester and ask me for some advice. Here are my suggestions.
First, you should listen carefully to your teacher in class and practice as often as possible after class because mastering a language requires a lot of practice. Second, I’d like to recommend you to read some Chinese storybooks, which can help you enlarge your vocabulary and understand the different meanings of the words. Third, I think it is a good idea to communicate with Chinese native speakers. Last but not least, watching Chinese movies and listening to Chinese songs are good ways to learn idiomatic Chinese.
I hope my advice will be helpful.Yours,Li Hua
第二节(救援故事)
Shortly after midnight, they heard a helicopter circling above their tents. Whitson jumped out of his sleeping bag excitedly and ran out to get the headlamp. While flashing the light at the helicopter, they kept waving their hands and shouting until they heard the magic words, “This is Search and Rescue. You have been found. We are looking for a good place to land. Please stay where you are.”
When the officers dropped them back at the rescue center, the family learned more about the whole story. It turned out that a man living downstream saw the water bottle when he was fishing in the river. It was trapped in his fishing net. He picked it up and saw the word “Help!” on it. Immediately, he sent it to the rescuers, who found the note inside the water bottle. On hearing the story, Whitson’s wife jumped up and hugged his husband and son, whispering to them, “What a romantic adventure!”
