Susan had a secret hobby. She loved robots.
After school, she often helped her father in his small workroom. Her father fixed machines and made simple tools. Susan learned how motors (马达) and wires (电线) worked there. She could tell different kinds of switches (开关) apart. But at school, Susan never talked about this. Her friends thought she only liked reading and drawing.
One afternoon, Susan heard her classmates Alex and Jacob talking in the hallway. They looked worried.
“Our robot Robbie is broken,” Alex said.
“His legs move the wrong way,” Jacob added. “Tomorrow is the competition!”
On the bus home, Susan sat behind them. Alex and Jacob made an effort to fix Robbie. Susan watched carefully. She saw them connect wires again and again, but Robbie still did not work. Susan noticed something strange about the switch wires.
After a few minutes, she spoke softly, “Can I ask a question?”
Alex and Jacob turned around.
“Are you using the NC wire for the switch?” Susan asked.
They looked at each other, not knowing what to say. Susan smiled and explained, “For this motor, you need the NO wire, not the NC one.” She showed them how to change it and helped reconnect the wires.
Suddenly, Robbie’s legs moved smoothly.
“It works!” Jacob shouted.
That evening, Jacob called Susan and asked her to help make Robbie better. Susan was happy to join them. Together, they made Robbie faster and better.
On the day of the competition, Robbie performed perfectly. He walked, turned, and finished every task. The team won first prize.

Researchers are happy about a little boy’s progress after he became the first person to get a new treatment for his uncommon illness.
Ollie was born with Hunter syndrome. It is an illness that causes the body to have difficulty breaking down certain sugars. As those sugars build up in the body, they can lead to damage (损害) that influences physical and mental development. Children with Hunter syndrome usually appear healthy at birth and develop normally for the first few years of life. Symptoms usually begin to appear between ages 3 and 4, when parents may notice their children’s behavioural changes, hearing loss, and heart trouble. In serious cases, the illness can cause death.
Ollie was the first of five boys around the world to receive the treatment as part of a test run by researchers. Scientists collected special stem cells (干细胞) from the patient’s blood. In the lab, scientists fixed the broken genes (基因) in these stem cells, and then put these corrected cells back inside the patient.
Ollie’s progress is quite surprising. He appears to be developing normally. Doctors are hopeful that the new treatment can help more children with the illness. Researcher Simon Jones, who is one of the leaders of the test, said, “I’ve been waiting 20 years to see a boy like Ollie doing as well as he is, and it’s just so exciting.”
Ollie’s parents told the hospital that they were surprised at how much better their son was developing. “Every time we talk about it, I want to cry. It’s just so amazing,” said Ollie’s mother.
11. Why are researchers happy according to the text?
A. Because a boy agreed to receive a new treatment.
B. Because a treatment has improved a boy’s health.
C. Because they found a new way to fix broken genes.
D. Because they discovered causes of Hunter syndrome.
12. What does the underlined word “Symptoms” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Signs of the illness. B. Causes of the illness.
C. Tests for the illness. D. Treatments for the illness.
13. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To show how the illness influences kids. B. To explain how the new treatment works.
C. To show why scientists chose Ollie for the test. D. To explain why researchers carried out the test.
14. Which of the following is an opinion?
A. Hunter syndrome can cause death. B. Ollie was the first to receive the treatment.
C. Ollie’s progress is quite surprising. D. Simon Jones is one of the leaders of the test.
15. Where is the text most probably from?
A. A guidebook. B. A movie review. C. A storybook. D. A science report.

I’ll teach you.”,说明Simon虽然同意帮忙,但表达了自己不会打扫或不知道怎么打扫的顾虑,故用“But I don’t know how to do it well.”
根据下文妈妈回答“First, put things away.”,可知Simon的问句应是询问打扫的第一步该做什么,故用“What should I do first?”
根据上文妈妈给出了打扫的步骤(先收拾东西,再从上到下打扫),下文Simon说“I’ll do as you say.”,可知此处Simon应是表示自己已经明白了,故用“I got it.”或“I see.”

根据上文妈妈问“what do you usually do in your labor class at school?”,可知Simon的回答应是描述在劳动课上做的具体事情,故用“We usually clean the classroom.”或“We learn to cook.”
根据下文Simon回答“Because it gives me a sense of achievement.”,可知妈妈的问句应是用why引导的特殊疑问句,询问Simon现在为什么喜欢劳动课,故用“Why do you like it now?”

People have different ideas about whether we should recite English texts or not. In my opinion, reciting is very important for English learning.
First, reciting helps us remember new words and useful expressions. When we recite carefully, we use them again and again, so they stick firmly in our mind. Second, reciting can improve our speaking and writing skills. By repeating beautiful sentences, we learn how to use English naturally and correctly in our daily life.
Of course, understanding the texts is necessary, but reciting helps us go further, so I strongly believe reciting is a better way to learn English well.
