One afternoon in a bookstore,I found a
book called The Last Days of Old Beijing(《再
会,老北京》)by the USA writer Michael
Meyer. The name made me think about my
home city,Beijing,1 its past.
Meyer's writing takes us 2 to the time
of Beijing about 20 years ago.In 2005,Meyer
moved into a shared courtyard(庭院)home in
one of Beijing's 3 neighborhoods,Dashilan,
on one of its hutongs. There he taught English
at a local school and became the
4
westerner(西方人)there.
Meyer saw some of the great changes in
this area. The old houses made way 5 high
buildings and shopping malls.However,6
parts of old Beijing's culture stayed strong.
People
7
kept traditions.For example,
people put up the Spring Festival couplets and
artists worked hard to pass down skills like
acrobatics(杂技).Meyer shows
8
how
these traditions helped people keep their roots.
I was born in Beijing in the 2010s,9
I
know more about the city's modern side.
Reading The Last Days of Old Beijing opened my
eyes to new sides of the city that I hadn't
10
before. Those small details (of daily life in
the old neighborhoods touched my heart.

I'm a middle-aged woman.When it comes
to digital devices(电子设备)like smartphones,
iPads and
computers,I have a love-hate
relationship with them.On the one hand, they
are helpful to me.On the other hand,I spend
too much time on them in my free time.
Now,I see kids everywhere glued to
smartphones and iPads. Many of them start
using the devices before five.It worries
me.
Screens shouldn't replace reading or outdoor
activities.
This has reminded me of my childhood.I
hardly ever sat in front of screens.Instead,I
spent hours running around the yard with my
sister.Sometimes,we played in the yard until it
was dark.I miss the apple trees, the tomato
plants and happy laughter in the yard, filled with all
of my sweet childhood memories.I know kids today
seldom experience these moments.
Parents now should realize the importance of
screen-free activities.Kids should go outside and
take in fresh air in nature.Let kids be kids
without devices.
1.What does the writer often do in her free
time?(不超过10个词)
2.How does the writer feel about kids using
screens?(不超过5个词)
3.Why is“yard”mentioned several times in
paragraph3?(不超过15个词)

Communication Tools in My Family
Forty years ago,my grandparents wrote
letters to their friends and family.Grandpa
worked in the city and Grandma lived in the
country,so they wrote to each other. It took one
week to deliver the letter. When Grandma asked
a question in her letter,it took her two weeks to
get the answer! If there was anything urgent
(紧急的),they needed to send telegrams.
The telephone became popular in the early
1990s.But my dad's family did not have a
telephone until 1998.Although it was much faster
than writing letters,it was still inconvenient.Once
Dad arrived home late because he helped a granny
on his way.My grandparents were so worried
about him because he could not call them and
tell them what happened. This never happened
again after my dad bought his first mobile
phone in 2002.
My favourite communication tool is the
mobile phone.I have used it since my thirteenth
birthday. My parents and friends can find me
wherever I am.It is very convenient, but at the
same time it is easy to be interrupted(千扰)
especially when I want to be alone.Sometimes I
have headaches after talking on the mobile
phone for a long time.

Reading Comprehension:Changes in Transport
Millie is working on a school project about
transport.She is comparing how people
travelled in the past and how they travel now.
Her dad tells her that when he was young,he
