A
According to my map, I should have been close to the royal palace. But nothing in Casablanca’s Mers Sultan quarter looked impressive like a palace. I tried one street, then the next. Finally, I approached some teenage girls outside a snack bar.
“I’m looking for the palace,” I said in poor French, pointing to my old map. “It says it should be near here.” One of the girls glanced at the worn sheet of paper and asked in disbelief, “Don’t you have a phone?” No, I did not have a phone. Or rather, I did, but I wasn’t using it.
Except for buying my plane ticket, my plan was to explore Casablanca — a Moroccan (摩洛哥) city I had never visited — without using the Internet. I could have used a guidebook, but that seemed to go against the sense of discovery. After all, my main goal was to see if I might restore the serendipity while exploring.
I arrived in the city in the afternoon. Mapless, I picked a direction and started walking. A palm-lined boulevard (林荫大道) seemed like a good choice and soon I was amid shops and restaurants. A hand-painted sign reading “Ryad91” caught my eye. I knew from previous trips to other Moroccan cities that “ryad” means “small hotel”. I walked in and Mohammad, a tall man welcomed me. I took the only remaining room and asked for a new map. “One minute,” he said, sitting down at his computer and printing one out from Google. About a dozen streets on it bore names, and the rest was a mess of confusing lines.
My free walk started outside the hotel’s door. The good thing about traveling without expectations is that it can turn everything into a discovery. And there was plenty that interested me along Casablanca’s winding (蜿蜒) streets: graceful, thin towers; bakers pulling hot bread from open-air ovens; the bright color of street art, vivid against the whitewashed walls. At dinner time, my walk brought me to the central market. I settled on Nadia’s because of the local businessmen there. Was its juicy grilled sardines (烤沙丁鱼) the best in the market? I don’t know. They were definitely the best I had eaten.
1. What did the girl mean by asking “Don’t you have a phone”?
A. The author was poor. B. The map was too old.
C. Phones could direct the way. D. The palace was not nearby.
2. The underlined part in paragraph 3 can probably be replaced by ______.
A. find pleasant things by chance B. strengthen my sense of direction
C. solve the mysteries of Casablanca D. manage to see unfamiliar attractions
3. Which of the following words best describes Mohammad?
A. Traditional. B. Digital-minded. C. Knowledgeable. D. Casual.
4. What is the writing purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To show a lively business atmosphere. B. To prove Nadia’s serves the best sardines.
C. To stress the importance of the central market. D. To emphasize the author’s unexpected discoveries.

When we think of holidays, we think of traveling, beaches, fun, and adventure. But the reality is, we spend most of our holidays on our personal devices (设备).
Smartphones have taken the world by storm, influencing the manner we interact with each other. While it may seem that sending a quick text message or uploading a photo to WeChat doesn’t take so much time, these things eventually add up without us even knowing it. It was discovered in a study conducted by travel site LastMinute.com that 90 percent of Britons spend more than four hours a day using their devices while they are on holiday.
If this is what you are experiencing, it sounds like you need a digital detox. Digital detox isn’t a new concept. Brown University defines it as a set period during which people avoid using electronic devices that have become a big part of daily life.
A new study published in May, 2022 revealed that people avoiding social media for one week might result in obvious improvements in their well-being, depression, and anxiety. And now, many tour operators around the world have been providing visitors with digital detox trips. For example, Sheldon Chalet, a resort (度假区) in Alaska, US, has gone tech-free in an attempt to provide its guests with a truly relaxing off-line vacation. Owner Marne Sheldon hopes that guests can “spend their nights looking at shooting stars and the aurora (极光), rather than scrolling Instagram or watching the news”.
In today’s environment of constant digital connection, it’s important to find time to stop and smell the roses—without taking a selfie at the same time. A digital detox may be just the thing you need to cleanse your mind body, and soul.
5. Why does the author mention the study by LastMinute.com in paragraph 2?
A. To show how common device usage is during holidays.
B. To stress that smartphones improve holiday experiences.
C. To prove that Britons are the most frequent device users worldwide.
D. To explain why the travel industry promotes technology dependency.
6. According to Brown University what is a “digital detox”?
A. A medical treatment for smartphone addiction.
B. A strict rule against using social media for a year.
C. A vacation plan that includes limited Internet access.
D. A period of time avoiding electronic devices in daily life.
7. What is the author’s attitude toward digital detox?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
8. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A resort for tech-free holidays. B. Digital detox for better vacations.
C. Reasons for limiting screen time. D. Ways to reduce smartphone addiction.

Cutting overall calories (卡路里) taken in, usually by 20 percent to 50 percent, has been connected with long life in lab animals since more than a century ago. In one recent study, researchers fed 30 male mice a standard diet with 20 percent protein, and another 30 mice a diet with only 5 percent protein. They found those that got less protein lived longer.
Lab animals on low-calorie or low-protein diets are indeed long-lived. In the study, mice that noshed all they wanted of normal food lived for 1,008 days at most. Mice given the same food, but only 80 percent of the calories, survived for up to 1,179 days — a rather old age for a mouse. A third group fed on an all-you-can-eat meal with only 6 percent protein and their survival was in between the others, with the longest being 1,115 days.
These effects went beyond long life. Mice on low-calorie or low-protein diets had lower levels of sugar and insulin — markers of fitness — in their blood. These healthy signals continued as the mice on controlled diets grew older, while the health conditions took a turn for the worse in the aging mice that ate normally. Not surprisingly, the mice on low-calorie or low-protein diets also had lower body fat. Indeed, at a one-year check-in, they were very thin, weighing in at about two thirds the weight of the normally dining mice.
Scientists don’t yet know all the biological causes behind how mice become thin, healthy and long-lived on controlled diets. Although the real reason may be more than what we think and it may cover how their bodies process food and respond to lower energy intake over time, one obvious potential explanation for their skinny bodies is that they don’t have enough nutrients to build and protect their body parts or are applying their energy to brain function.
9. What did the recent study find about mice on a low-protein diet?
A. They survived for up to 1,179 days. B. They had higher body fat than normal mice.
C. They had higher levels of sugar in their blood. D. They lived longer than those on a standard diet.
10. What does the underlined word “noshed” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Balanced. B. Avoided. C. Ate. D. Hid.
11. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The health changes with age. B. The health benefits of controlled diets.
C. The relationship between body fat and diet.
D. The differences between controlled and normal diets.
12. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Energy intake depends on food processing.
B. Mice have a preference for low-protein diets.
C. Controlled diets weaken mice’s brain function.
D. Poor nutrients may contribute to mice’s thin figures.

A 篇(答案:CABD)
根据第二段““I’m looking for the palace.” I said in poor French, pointing to my old map. “It says it should be near here.” One of the girls glanced at the worn sheet of paper and asked in disbelief, “Don’t you have a phone?”(“我正在寻找宫殿。”
故选A。
根据第四段“I took the only remaining room and asked for a new map. “One minute,” he said, sitting down at his computer and printing one out from Google.(我订了仅剩的一个房间,并要了一张新地图。“等一下,”他说着,坐在电脑前,从谷歌上打印了一张。)”可知,穆罕默德坐在电脑前,从谷歌上打印了一张地图,由此可知,穆罕默德是一个有数字思维的人。故选B。
【4题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段“My free walk started outside the hotel’s door. The good thing about traveling without expectations is that it can turn everything into a discovery.(我从酒店门口出发,开启了随性漫步。无预期旅行的妙处就在于,它能让所有事物都变成惊喜的发现。)”可知,最后一段的写作目的是强调作者意想不到的发现。故选D。
B 篇(答案:ADAB)
【答案】5. A 6. D 7. A 8. B
根据文章第2段“It was discovered in a study conducted by travel site LastMinute.com that 90 percent of Britons spend more than four hours a day using their devices while they are on holiday.” 故选A项。
根据文章第3段内容“Brown University defines it as a set period during which people avoid using electronic devices that have become a big part of daily life.”
根据文章最后一段内容“A digital detox may be just the thing you need to cleanse your mind body, and soul.(进行一次“数字排毒”或许正是你所需要的,它能帮助你净化身心和灵魂。)” 故选A项。
通过阅读文章内容可知,文章第3段首句“If this is what you are experiencing, it sounds like you need a digital detox.”提出了核心话题“数字排毒”,同时在后文以阿拉斯加度假区为例,说明其如何帮助人们享受真正的放松,并在文章最后一段内容“A digital detox may be just the thing you need to cleanse your mind body, and soul.(进行一次“数字排毒”或许正是你所需要的,它能帮助你净化身心和灵魂。)”
根据第一段中的“In one recent study, researchers fed 30 male mice a standard diet with 20 percent protein, and another 30 mice a diet with only 5 percent protein. They found those that got less protein lived longer.”
根据第二段中划线词下文“Mice given the same food, but only 80 percent of the calories, survived for up to 1,179 days — a rather old age for a mouse. A third group fed on an all-you-can-eat meal with only 6 percent protein and their survival was in between the others, with the longest being 1,115 days.(给予相同食物但热量只有80%的小鼠,存活时间长达1179天——对小鼠来说这已经是相当老的年龄了。第三组小鼠则不限量进食,但食物中蛋白质含量仅为6%,它们的存活时间介于其他两组之间,最长为1115天。)”可知,本段主要在对比不同饮食下小鼠的存活时间,所以“In the study, mice that noshed all they wanted of normal food lived for 1, 008 days at most.(在这项研究中,那些可以随意noshed正常食物的老鼠最多活了1,008天。)”
根据第三段中的“These effects went beyond long life. Mice on low-calorie or low-protein diets had lower levels of sugar and insulin — markers of fitness — in their blood. These healthy signals continued as the mice on controlled diets grew older, while the health conditions took a turn for the worse in the aging mice that ate normally. Not surprisingly, the mice on low-calorie or low-protein diets also had lower body fat.(这些影响不仅仅体现在寿命延长上。低热量或低蛋白饮食的小鼠血液中糖和胰岛素(健康指标)水平较低。随着控制饮食的小鼠年龄增长,这些健康信号持续存在,而正常饮食的衰老小鼠的健康状况则恶化。不出所料,低热量或低蛋白饮食的小鼠体脂也较低。)”可知,本段主要讲了控制饮食对小鼠健康的好处。
【12题详解】推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Although the real reason may be more than what we think and it may cover how their bodies process food and respond to lower energy intake over time, one obvious potential explanation for their skinny bodies is that they don’t have enough nutrients to build and protect their body parts or are applying their energy to brain function.(尽管真正的原因可能比我们想象的更多,可能包括它们的身体如何处理食物以及随着时间的推移对低能量摄入的反应,但它们身体消瘦的一个明显潜在解释是,它们没有足够的营养来构建和保护身体部位,或者将能量用于大脑功能。)”
