Mexican art holds a unique place in the world of creativity. Let’s explore the famous Mexican artists who shaped this heritage, their artwork, and their lasting influence.
Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo is a globally famous Mexican artist whose deeply personal paintings explore themes of identity, pain, and physical suffering. Her life was marked by hardship, from childhood illness to a severe bus accident. Her works, which draw on Mexican traditions and bright colors, convey powerful emotions, especially in her intense self portraits.
Leonora Carrington
Leonora Carrington created dream-like paintings filled with mystical (神秘的) creatures. Inspired by local spirituality and her personal experiences, she explores themes of nature, magic, and transformation in her work, extending her creativity into writing.
Rufino Tamayo
Rufino Tamayo distinguished himself by combining modern abstraction with native Mexican traditions. Unlike the politically charged murals (壁画) of Siqueiros, Tamayo focused on universal human themes. He uses bright and eye-catching colors in his paintings. These paintings show amazing stories from nature and old cultures, along with ideas about space. His heritage also includes founding significant institutions like the National Museum of Contemporary Art.
David Alfaro Siqueiros
As a key figure in the Mexican Muralism movement, David Alfaro Siqueiros used art to champion social change. His large, dramatic murals vividly portray political struggle, class conflict, and the chaos of World War II. Alongside Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, he formed the “Big Three” of Mexican muralists, focusing on the working class. His innovative techniques and distinctive style gave life to his powerful messages, leaving a lasting cultural heritage.

After losing her job, Andrea found herself returning to the one thing that had always offered comfort: painting. With steady encouragement from her husband, she got into painting full-time, transforming her passion into a meaningful way to support her family — one brushstroke at a time.
Andrea’s creative roots stretch back to childhood. She remembers being fascinated by classics like The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross, where gentle landscapes unfolded in real time. Combined with the influence of impressionist and surrealist masters, these early inspirations opened her eyes to the possibilities of color, form, and mood.
Guided by dedicated and incredibly supportive art teachers, Andrea fell for oil paint. Today, she views each canvas (画布) as an invitation — to push herself, to keep learning, and to refine the signature style her collectors have come to love. Seeing the joy her work brings to others fuels her passion and makes her efforts worthwhile. Social platforms have helped her find community, connection, and a broader audience that resonates (共鸣) with her nature-driven aesthetic (审美).
For Andrea, the creating process is as important as the finished piece. She emphasizes how important it is “to not get too comfortable” when creating, and to challenge yourself, forcing a deeper dive into your own thought processes. It’s this sense of personal evolution that gives each painting its emotional resonance.
Andrea’s career continues to develop. She launched her website artbyandrearich.com recently, and she will present an exhibition next spring at the Holland Area Arts Council in the Jane Armstrong Gallery. With characteristic optimism, she says, “The best is yet to come.”
For homeowners seeking artworks that bring peace, genuineness, and a touch of Michigan’s natural beauty indoors, Andrea Rich is certainly an artist to turn to.
4. What made Andrea fall in love with oil paint?

C. Influence of various artists. D. Inspiration from classic works.
5. What matters most to Andrea in creation?

7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share passion for art. B. To advertise fine artworks.
C. To recommend an artist. D. To motivate art enthusiasts.

Exercise is beneficial to our health in many ways, but it’s not that effective when it comes to losing weight. Now we have the best evidence explaining why this is. People who start to exercise more burn extra calories. However, the actual weight they lose is far less than the amount expected given the extra calories burned.
An analysis of 14 trials has found that our bodies burn less energy for other functions to make up for the calories used during exercise. This effect becomes even stronger when people both eat less and exercise more — and in some cases, it can completely neutralize the extra energy spent exercising. That means dieting alone leads to weight loss, but adding exercise may not help lose any more weight
Herma Pontzer at Duke University says pairing exercise with diet makes the body compensate (补偿) more: “It’s still good for you, just not for weight loss.” When he studied Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, he was amazed they used no more total energy than desk workers. This discovery led Pontzer to propose, in 2015, that our bodies have developed to limit how much energy we burn, and compensate for greater physical activity by saving energy in other ways.
Exercise type matters too. Compensation only occurs with aerobic exercises (有氧运动) like running. With weightlifting, energy use went up more than expected — for example, those consuming 200 extra kilocalories lifting weights saw a 250-kilocalorie rise in total consumption. Pontzer says measuring weightlifting energy use is hard, so findings need to be treated with caution (谨慎), but he guesses extra energy goes to muscle repair and building
While Pontzer sees the findings as very clear evidence of compensation, others are still not convinced. Dylan Thompson notes study limitations, such as extra exercise replacing daily activities like gardening. He and Javier Gonzalez, another professor, at the University of Bath agree more studies are needed. “We really need carefully designed randomized controlled trials in humans,” Thompson said.
8. What does the underlined word “neutralize” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Cancel out. B. Cut down. C. Add up. D. Use up.
9. What surprised Pontzer when he studied hunter-gatherers?
A. They led a less active life than expected.
B. They could save energy in a unique way.
C. They dieted in a way benefiting weight loss.
D. They consumed as much energy as office workers.
10. What does the example of weightlifting show?
A. Total energy use is hard to calculate.
B. Muscle repair needs no extra calories.
C. Aerobic exercise benefits muscle building.
D. Energy compensation varies with exercise types.
11. What is the Dylan Thompson’s attitude towards the energy compensation theory?
A. Dismissive. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
D
Restrictions on vapes (电子烟) are multiplying. Belgium banned sales of throwaway vapes on January 1st. France adopted a similar law on February 24th. Other bans may soon come into force in England, Scotland, Wales and New Zealand. More than 30 countries including Brazil and India have outlawed all vaping products. Are such measures justified?
Vaping clearly carries risks. Starting in 2019, America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began to track a new disease known as EVALI (“e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury”). As of February 18th 2020, the CDC had identified 2,807 admissions to hospital for EVALI in America. At least 68 of those patients had died.
Swift action arose. Researchers pointed fingers at vitamin E acetate (醋酸酯), a skincare oil that was added to many unlawful masses of vaping liquids as a thickening agent. When vitamin E acetate is heated, highly poisonous gas is produced. Many areas outlawed any addition of vitamin E acetate to vape liquids, and crackdowns on black markets followed. EVALI cases fell greatly; the CDC has not detected a revival.
Yet health authorities believe EVALI might also be caused by other substances in vape, including those that are produced legally. In a landmark analysis of four popular vaping liquids published in Chemical Research in Toxicology in 2021, a team at Johns Hopkins University labelled six ingredients as potentially harmful. Earlier studies had found vaping mixtures that used heavy metals such as lead.
There are other reasons to be concerned. First, as vaping rose in popularity only in the past dozen or so years, it remains to be seen whether cancer cases could arise. Lab mice have developed cancers after being subjected to vape aerosols (气溶胶). The second is that vape aerosols have been found to damage human tissue, including DNA.
12. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The health risks of vaping. B. The trend of banning vapes.
C. The distribution of vapes sale. D. The measures of promoting vapes.
13. What is the main reason for the global bans on vapes?
A. The decline in traditional cigarette sales.
B. The high cost of regulating vaping products.
C. The environmental issues caused by e-cigarettes.
D. The outbreak of EVALI linked to vaping products.
14. What directly resulted from banning vitamin E acetate?
A. EVALI cases dropped sharply. B. CDC stopped tracking EVALI.
C. More countries banned all vapes. D. Other harmful substances were found.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Vaping is not as popular as before.
B. Health risks by vaping may still exist.
C. Lab mice are likely to spread diseases.
D. Vape aerosols can cure damaged human tissue.

Ethan was a shy 11th-grade boy who seldom joined after-school activities. His greatest hobby was making kites with his grandfather, who had taught him everything about the craft before moving to another city. Every weekend, Ethan would stay in his small workshop, cutting bamboo sticks and painting colorful patterns on paper.
This year, our school held a Kite Festival, and the winner would get a chance to fly their kite at the city’s central park. Ethan hesitated for days before signing up. He wanted to show his work, but he was afraid of being laughed at for his quiet personality. He decided to make a special kite shaped like a phoenix, with bright red and gold feathers, just as his grandfather had taught him.
For two weeks, Ethan buried himself in making the kite. He carefully shaped the bamboo frame, glued the paper smoothly, and painted each feather by hand. However, on the night before the festival, a sudden strong wind blew through his open window. When Ethan rushed to close it, he found his nearly finished phoenix kite lying on the floor, its wing torn and the frame broken.
He sat on the floor, feeling extremely sad. All his hard work seemed to be wasted. He wanted to give up and not attend the festival at all. The next morning, Ethan walked to school slowly, carrying the broken kite in his schoolbag. He had no time to make a new one, and his eyes were filled with disappointment. As he entered the school gate, he saw his classmates busy preparing their kites, laughing and chatting happily.

A. Dismissive. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
A 9. D 10. D 11. C
根据第二段“This effect becomes even stronger when people both eat less and exercise more — and in some cases, it can completely neutralize the extra energy spent exercising.(当人们少吃多动时,这种补偿效应会更强,在某些情况下,它会完全neutralize运动消耗的额外能量。)”
根据第三段“When he studied Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, he was amazed they used no more total energy than desk workers.(他研究坦桑尼亚哈扎族狩猎采集者时,惊讶地发现他们消耗的总能量和办公室伏案工作者相差无几。)”
根据第四段“Compensation only occurs with aerobic exercises (有氧运动) like running. With weightlifting, energy use went up more than expected...(能量补偿效应仅出现在跑步这类有氧运动中。而进行举重训练时,能量消耗会超出预期……)”可知,举重的例子说明不同运动类型的能量补偿情况并不相同。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Dylan Thompson notes study limitations, such as extra exercise replacing daily activities like gardening. He and Javier Gonzalez, another professor, at the University of Bath agree more studies are needed.(迪伦・汤普森指出了这项研究存在的局限性,比如额外的运动挤占了园艺这类日常活动的时间。他与巴斯大学的另一位教授哈维尔・冈萨雷斯都认为,还需要开展更多相关研究。)”可知,Dylan Thompson对能量补偿理论持怀疑、不完全信服的态度。
B 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据文章第一段“Restrictions on vapes (电子烟) are multiplying. Belgium banned sales of throwaway vapes on January 1st. France adopted a similar law on February 24th. Other bans may soon come into force in England, Scotland, Wales and New Zealand. More than 30 countries including Brazil and India have outlawed all vaping products. Are such measures justified?(对电子烟的限制措施正在不断增加。比利时自1月1日起禁止销售一次性电子烟。法国于2月24日通过了类似的法律。英格兰、苏格兰、威尔士和新西兰可能也将很快实施禁令。包括巴西和印度在内的30多个国家已经禁止了所有电子烟产品。这些措施是否合理?)”可知,文章第一段列举了比利时、法国、英国、新西兰等多个国家地区禁止或即将禁止电子烟,故第一段主要介绍禁止电子烟的趋势。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Starting in 2019, America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began to track a new disease known as EVALI (“e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury”). As of February 18th 2020, the CDC had identified 2,807 admissions to hospital for EVALI in America. At least 68 of those patients had died.(从2019年开始,美国疾病控制与预防中心开始追踪一种名为EVALI(即“电子烟或电子烟产品使用相关的肺损伤”)的新疾病。截至2020年2月18日,美国疾控中心已确认有2807人因EVALI住院,其中至少68名患者死亡。)”及第三段“Researchers pointed fingers at vitamin E acetate (醋酸酯), a skincare oil that was added to many unlawful masses of vaping liquids as a thickening agent. When vitamin E acetate is heated, highly poisonous gas is produced. Many areas outlawed any addition of vitamin E acetate to vape liquids, and crackdowns on black markets followed. EVALI cases fell greatly; the CDC has not detected a revival.(研究人员将矛头指向了维生素E醋酸酯——一种护肤油,被作为增稠剂添加到许多非法电子烟液中。
根据文章第三段“Many areas outlawed any addition of vitamin E acetate to vape liquids, and crackdowns on black markets followed. EVALI cases fell greatly; the CDC has not detected a revival.(许多地区禁止在电子烟液中添加任何维生素E醋酸酯,并随后对黑市进行了打击。EVALI病例大幅下降,美国疾控中心未发现该疾病复发。)”可知,在禁止维生素E醋酸酯后,EVALI病例大幅下降。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“There are other reasons to be concerned. First, as vaping rose in popularity only in the past dozen or so years, it remains to be seen whether cancer cases could arise. Lab mice have developed cancers after being subjected to vape aerosols (气溶胶). The second is that vape aerosols have been found to damage human tissue, including DNA.(还有其他令人担忧的理由。首先,由于电子烟仅在过去十几年间才流行起来,是否会引发癌症病例仍有待观察。实验室小鼠在暴露于电子烟气溶胶后已患上癌症。第二,研究发现电子烟气溶胶会损害人体组织,包括DNA。)”可知,最后一段提出两点担忧:一是癌症病例可能未来才出现(小鼠实验已致癌),二是电子烟气溶胶会损伤人体组织包括DNA,这暗示电子烟的健康风险仍然存在。故选B。

Just as Ethan was about to hide in a corner, his art teacher Ms. Brown walked towards him. She noticed his low spirits and the broken kite in his bag. Instead of blaming him, she smiled gently and asked what had happened. Ethan told her about the wind and his broken phoenix kite, his voice full of sadness. Ms. Brown patted his shoulder and said, “A broken kite doesn’t mean your dream is broken. Let’s fix it together.” She took out tape, colored paper and scissors from her office, helping Ethan stick the torn wing and strengthen the bent frame patiently.
With Ms. Brown’s help, Ethan fixed the kite and joined the festival bravely. Although the phoenix kite was not as perfect as before, it still looked beautiful in the sun. When Ethan flew it, the kite rose slowly and danced in the sky. His classmates cheered for him, and he even won the Most Creative Kite award. Holding the prize, Ethan realized that kindness and courage could fix everything. He sent a photo of the flying kite to his grandfather, who replied with warm praise. From that day on, Ethan became more confident and learned to face difficulties bravely.
