There are also shops offering visitors the chance to dress in the clothes of the local She ethnic minority (畲族) for photos.
Usually, the ink rubbing (墨水拓片) workshop also interests lots of visitors. The leader of the workshop guides people, showing them luck and happiness in China, on a woodcut (木版画) of a tulou. After rolling the paper with golden ink, they get a beautiful picture of the tulou, a unique souvenir made with their own hands that they can take home.

Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked.
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat. Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind roared (咆哮) around the house, and the doors and windows banged (砰砰作响). Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed to have butterflies in her stomach. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone, Mary decided to explore (探索) the house. She went quietly along corridors (走廊) and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house, she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out. “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

Starting a dream job in a new city, studying at a top university abroad, or traveling for a long time — these are all great chances. But they can also make us feel sad and lonely. What is homesickness, and what can we do about it?
Homesickness is not new. Even a very old story, Homer’s *Odyssey* (《奥德赛》), talks about it. Common symptoms (症状) include feeling sad, worried, and easily getting angry. It can also make people want to hide from activities and feel too tired to do anything. Homesickness may happen to anyone. However, some things can help people feel stronger when facing it. Psychologist Christopher Thurber and healthcare expert Edward Walton tell us that good past experiences of being away from home, a hopeful way of thinking, and a stable (稳定的) home life can help people deal with it better. Homesickness is also less serious when a person feels they are in control of their life, instead of being forced (被迫) to move.
Even with these things, most people who move away from home still feel homesick. Psychologist Nilufar Ahmed says that we should first acknowledge (承认) homesickness—accept that it will happen and work through our feelings. Keeping good connections (联系) is important. Ahmed suggests that people try to fully join in their new surroundings (环境), focus on the good things about their new place and meet new people in an active way. She also suggests staying in touch with home through video chats or other ways, and having things that make you think of home, like your favorite food. However, other psychologists, like Thurber and Walton, say that having these connections to home doesn’t mean we need to give up trying new things.
Feeling some homesickness is very common and hard to avoid when we move to a new place. Knowing this, and taking small steps to make it better, can help us make the most of new chances.

For many Shanghai locals, no Spring Festival holiday is complete without a visit to the Chenghuang Miao area. Traced back to the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Fujian Tulou is a kind of traditional Chinese rural house built by the Hakka people in the mountainous areas of East China’s Fujian Province. These large, closed, and strong earth buildings were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage (遗产) List in 2008.
China’s development has not given up traditional culture but has gone hand in hand with its cultural heritage, passing it on from generation to generation. Fujian Tulou is an example of this. In Zhangzhou’s Nanjing County, over 15,000 tulou buildings are kept with a large number of tourists visiting them every year.
At the tulou area, you can always see many travelers taking videos with their phones or cameras. Local people may invite visitors to their homes for a short tour, sharing stories about the inside design of the tulou.
These activities not only provide fun but also allow visitors to experience the beauty of traditional Chinese culture firsthand.

Once you step into the Fu You Men Commodity Market (福佑门小商品市场), you are greeted by a warm, lively atmosphere. Some stalls (货摊) are decorated with lanterns and Chinese knots. Others are busy s____66____ fun fridge magnets (冰箱贴), lovely bag charms (包饰) and cute toys featuring the horse—the zodiac animal for this Chinese New Year. But one of the most popular products (产品) this year took off for a special r____67____: its crying face.
The “crying horse” toy first appeared in a shop in Yiwu, Zhejiang. Like many other horse toys, it has short legs, a golden bell a____68____ its neck and words on its side that reads, “Wishing you immediate wealth.” What makes it special is a sewing error (缝纫错误): S____69____ is wrong with its mouth, which is upside down and turns a smile into a sad expression (表情). Surprisingly, many people love the “crying horse,” finding it more relatable.
“When things don’t go well, seeing its expression makes me feel better,” said Ms. Zhu, a young woman in Tianjin. “It feels like I’m not the only one in trouble.”
The “crying horse” is not a____70____ in offering emotional comfort (情绪价值) and winning hearts, though. Another gift product is “Ma Biaobiao,” or the “messy little horse,” from the Shandong Art Museum. It stands out for its loose and carefree hairstyle. D____71____ from the “crying horse,” “Ma Biaobiao” is inspired (赋予灵感) by a horse painting by Chinese artist Qi Baishi. Its design is no accident. Many people compare (把……比作) themselves to it when hurrying to work in the morning without time to brush their hair. Besides the world of h____72____, fans of the popular Labubu dolls have similar ideas too. They buy these little dolls partly because of their so-called “ugly cuteness.”
It may seem strange that imperfect (不完美的) products are becoming so popular, but this mirrors our true selves. Like Labubu, many of us are b____73____ imperfect, with ugly teeth or small eyes. And in e____74____ life, nobody can be happy, tidy or patient all the time. But it’s only human to be “imperfect” and sometimes to be angry.
In some ways, these imperfect products may make us think about the v____75____ of being different. In a competitive world, it does you no good to always play it safe. For your next art project or piece of writing, why not take a small risk and let your creative side shine?
