Last Friday afternoon, my family and I were eating at a restaurant. Just as we finished, a homeless man came in. He was pushing a trolley full of his belongings (个人物品). He looked really hot from walking outside, and it was clear he was hungry and thirsty.
We got up to leave. As we did, he walked past us and sat at the table we’d just left, and started eating the chips we left. We noticed the staff nodded (点头) to each other to clear away the plates from the table.
When we were about to walk out, we heard someone say, “Excuse me.” It was the man who had sat at our table. He noticed I’d left my wallet behind and was walking towards us to give it back. I said thank you and my husband then ordered him a meal and a few drinks to express our thanks.
While we were on the drive home, I was explaining to my 6-year-old child what had happened and the importance of helping others, as well as being thankful to have a home to live in and food to eat.
Two days later, I looked for a card in my wallet and realized I had $50 cash in there all the time. How I wished I could have given it to the man! I was just too focused on trying to explain the importance of kindness to my child.
This world may be hard even at the best of times, but there are truly kind and honest people out there. I hope we can all try, whenever we can, to do something that makes someone’s day a little brighter.

Our memories are important in shaping our sense of self. We first have a sense of self early in life, perhaps as young as 18 months. Throughout childhood and puberty (青春期), we start to develop a set of ideas about our identity (身份), including our appearances, personalities and so on. These ideas shape our life stories, which gradually become a part of our sense of self.
Of all our memories, the “self-defining (自我定义) memories” are remembered most clearly. They are the most important—they are the ones that help us build our sense of self. By recognizing (辨别出) our self-defining memories, we can have a deeper understanding of ourselves. But how can we recognize them? The easiest way is to think about the events in our life. However, as we get older and experience more events, self-defining memories are always changing.
Interestingly, older adults always find ways to change memories of troubling events into positive stories. In this way, they can make peace with their past adversities. However, for younger adults, troubling events may cause them to experience more pain when they think of them. As scientists have discovered, your happiness comes from what you think about the events, not the events themselves.
Discovering your self-defining memories is an important step in dealing with your life experiences. By thinking about past events, your identity can continue to grow and improve how you see yourself.
11. When do we probably start to have a sense of self in our life?
A. At one year old.
B. At eighteen years old.
C. At one and a half years old.
D. At one year and eight months old.
12. According to Paragraph 2, what do we know about “self-defining memories”?
A. They have nothing to do with one’s age.
B. Learning about them can help you know yourself better.
C. They seldom change because past events cannot be changed.
D. They are the most important because they can be clearly remembered.
13. What is the meaning of the underlined word “adversities” in Paragraph 3?
A. Knowledge. B. Difficulties. C. Expectations. D. Happiness.
14. According to the last paragraph, what can thinking about past events help us do?
A. Forget our painful memories. B. Improve our sense of self.
C. Avoid future troubles. D. Keep all memories clear.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How our memories shape our sense of self.
B. Why older adults have fewer troubling memories.
C. How to recognize our self-defining memories.
D. The differences between younger and older adults.
【答案】11. C 12. B 13. B 14. B 15. A

By the end of January 2025, the world’s largest iceberg (冰山), A23a, about twice the size of Greater London and standing 130 feet tall, was moving towards South Georgia, a British island near Antarctica. This worries scientists a lot.
The iceberg started moving in November 2023 after being stuck (被卡住) on the seafloor for more than 30 years. Experts think it will reach the waters near South Georgia within weeks, which may harm the island’s rich ecosystem.
If the huge iceberg gets stuck in the waters around the island, it might block the paths (堵住通道) penguins and seals use to look for food. Penguins and seals might need to travel farther, spending more energy and returning with less food for their babies. As we have seen before, this could cause many young animals to die.
Dr Andrew Meijers, a scientist who once watched the iceberg on a research ship, called it a huge “ice wall”. He explained that South Georgia is important for penguins and seals to raise their young. However, some experts believe the ecosystem will return to normal by itself. Ted Scambos, an ice scientist, said the Southern Ocean’s wildlife has survived (幸存) icebergs over thousands of years and can go through this hard time successfully.
It is normal for icebergs to break away. However, scientists note this happens more often now because of the warming of the Earth. Rising temperatures melt (融化) ice faster, creating larger icebergs like A23a.
Experts predict that A23a will finally break into smaller pieces and melt. However, its influences on South Georgia’s animals could last long. This event is a warning for us. While nature can often return to normal by itself, it is delicate (脆弱的) at the same time. Humans’ actions also can bring risks to it.
16. What makes scientists worried?
A. A23a’s great size. B. A23a’s ecosystem.
C. A23a’s special height. D. A23a’s moving direction.
17. What may happen after the iceberg hits South Georgia?
A. It may change the island’s climate.
B. More animals may live on the iceberg.
C. It may influence the island’s ecosystem.
D. Animals may find more food on the iceberg.
18. What can we know about Andrew Meijers and Ted Scambos?
A. They both worry a lot about the iceberg.
B. They both call on people to save the ecosystem.
C. They have different ideas on the iceberg’s influence.
D. They don’t care much about the iceberg’s influence.
19. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. There will be more icebergs.
B. A23a has been the largest up to now.
C. South Georgia’s animals may die out.
D. Human’s actions also can bring risks to A23a.
20. What will the passage probably discuss next?
A. Why we should protect animals.
B. When A23a will break into smaller pieces.
C. How human’s activities can influence nature.
D. How nature returns to normal by itself.
【答案】16. D 17. C 18. C 19. A 20. C

Chinese is a difficult language. It has tens of thousands of Chinese characters (汉字). When you meet a Chinese character that you don’t know, you might look it up in a dictionary to find out its pinyin and meaning. Pinyin, a system (系统) that uses the Latin alphabet (拉丁字母), tells us how to pronounce Chinese characters.
In 1958, a Chinese language expert named Zhou Youguang and his team created pinyin. They created the system to help uneducated Chinese people learn how to read Chinese characters. This idea worked out well. The percentage of uneducated people in China dropped from 80% in the 1950s to 52% in 1964. In 2018, it was only 4.08%.
Pinyin has many other uses. For example, it helps to popularize Putonghua so that people from different places of China can understand each other.
It also makes it easier to type Chinese characters on computers and smartphones. Other ways, like the five-stroke input method (五笔输入法), are more difficult to use.
Foreign newspapers and TV stations sometimes use pinyin in their reports about China. The Oxford English Dictionary has now included over 100 pinyin entries (词条), such as jiaozi for “dumplings” and zhongguomeng for “Chinese dream”. Pinyin is not only a language tool, but also a cultural bridge that connects China to the world.

D
