It was a tiny, rented instrument with a deep brown finish, almost too big for a five-year-old girl’s small hands. My mother, a former pianist, believed music was a language everyone should learn to speak. She signed me up for lessons, and for years, I practiced dutifully, moving my bow across the strings, trying to make something that resembled music. At 13, I auditioned (试演) for my school’s advanced orchestra (管弦乐队). The night before, I stayed up practicing the same passage over and over. My fingers ached, but I wanted to prove I was good enough. The next day, as I walked into the audition room, my hands trembled. Halfway through my piece, I missed a shift, my bow slipped (滑落), and an awful noise filled the air. My worst fear came true—I failed. For weeks, I couldn’t pick up my violin. The thought of playing made my stomach turn. I convinced myself that I wasn’t talented and that I didn’t belong in the orchestra. One afternoon, I found my violin still resting in its open case, untouched. I hesitated before picking it up. The familiar weight settled under my chin (下巴), and for the first time in weeks, I played—not for a competition, not for an audience, just for myself. That day, I realized that failure didn’t define (定义) me. I learned that I played music not to be the best but because I loved it. The next year, I re-auditioned and earned a spot in the orchestra. Not because I was suddenly more talented, but because I refused to let one moment of failure decide my future. Now, as I face challenges in life, I think back to that moment—the day I picked up my violin again. It reminds me that success isn’t about perfection; it’s about perseverance (毅力). 19.What can we learn about the author when she was a little girl? A.She didn’t get much help from her mother. B.She pretended to practice every time. C.She was pushed into many competitions. D.She didn’t show much talent for the violin. 20.What caused the author’s failure during her first audition? A.A stomachache. B.An error because of nervousness. C.A wound on her fingers. D.A broken string. 21.What does the underlined word “convinced” in the third paragraph mean? A.Warned. B.Taught. C.Believed. D.Encouraged. 22.How did the author move past the unpleasant experience? A.By playing music for herself. B.By traveling around the country. C.By keeping away from the violin for a year. D.By taking part in more orchestra performances. 20.第二段提到“The night before, I stayed up practicing the same passage over and over… my hands trembled. Halfway through my piece, I missed a shift…”,说明作者试演前夜反复练习,次日走进试演室时手抖,由此可推知,紧张情绪引发演奏失误,最终导致她试演失败。 21. 22.第三段提“One afternoon…I hesitated before picking it up. The familiar weight settled under my chin, and for the first time in weeks, I played…”,说明作者是通过为自己演奏音乐走出这段不愉快经历的。 C Have you ever wondered when exactly your brain truly becomes “fully grown”? According to new research, the answer is surprising — your brain only goes into “adult mode” (成人模式) in your 30s. Scientists scanned (扫描) the brains of about 4,000 people — from babies under age 1 to 90-year-olds. The researchers found out four major “turning points” when brains rewire (重新连接) themselves: at the ages of 9, 32, 66, and 83. This means that human brains have five different periods, which help scientists understand how the brain is wired during different stages of life. The “wiring” controls how the brain sends and receives signals (信号) and affects how people experience the world, make decisions, and form memories. It is also related to mental (精神的) health and developmental conditions. From birth until age 9, children’s brains grow white and gray matter. Gray matter is a type of brain matter that processes and interprets (诠释) information and is connected with memory and emotion. White matter carries signals between parts of gray matter and helps with learning and paying attention. During this time, the many connections between young children’s brain cells (细胞) start dropping. The researchers call this period “childhood”. The second period, “adolescence (青春期)”, lasts from age 9 until 32. During this time, the brain continues to grow more white matter, improving communication inside the brain. People get better at remembering, paying attention, and solving problems. From 32 on, the brain enters “adulthood”. This is the longest period in a person’s life. The brain becomes more stable (稳定的), and brain parts become more separate from each other. In “early aging” (66–83 years old) and “late aging” (from 83 on), the connections in the brain start to drop. “These periods provide important context for what our brains might be best at, or more vulnerable (易受影响的) to, at different stages of our lives,” said Mousley, a student at the University of Cambridge in the UK. She added that the findings could help scientists understand why some brains develop differently than others and how that might affect people. 23.How does the writer start the text? A.By using a saying. B.By asking a question. C.By giving an example. D.By telling a story. 24.What are the functions (功能) of white matter according to the text? ① carry signals                  ② help to learn                 ③ interpret information ④ help to focus on something    ⑤ process information A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.③④⑤ 25.Which period lasts the longest in a person’s life? A.Childhood. B.Adulthood. C.Adolescence. D.Late aging. 26.What can we infer from the text? A.White matter plays a more important role in the brain than gray matter. B.Childhood is the most important period for brain development. C.The brain changes as people grow older. D.All brains develop in the same way. 原文第一段以问句“Have you ever wondered when exactly your brain truly becomes ‘fully grown’?” 24.原文第三段提到“White matter carries signals between parts of gray matter and helps with learning and paying attention.”,由此可知白质的功能包括传递信号、帮助学习和帮助集中注意力,对应①②④。 25.原文第五段提到“From 32 on, the brain enters ‘adulthood’. This is the longest period in a person’s life.”,由此可知成年期是人生中持续时间最长的阶段。 26. D Have you ever wondered why you go over a book again and again and still feel lost when tested on what you’ve read? It may be because you haven’t practiced retrieval (检索). Retrieval practice is a useful way to help us learn. Some of us remember best by listening, some by re-reading, and others learn best by using pictures and diagrams (图表). Schools try many of these different ways to help students “download” new information. A recent study from Purdue University, the US, shows that successful learning means being able to recall information at any moment. “Our view is that learning is not about studying or getting knowledge in memory,” said Jeffrey Karpicke, the lead researcher. “Learning is about retrieving important information at any moment. So it is important to make retrieval practice an important part of the learning process.” The research studied two groups of students. Both groups learned something from a text. One group made diagrams about the text. This method is called concept mapping The other group practiced retrieval. They put the text away after learning it and practiced freely recalling the concepts from the text. Then, both groups were tested on the information they had learned. Both groups did well in recalling the learned information. However, when they were asked to return one week later, the group who practiced retrieval scored higher than the group who made diagrams. So by practicing retrieval, we are able to recall information far better, which will help us study better. Our minds, just like our bodies, have to practice proper activities to become good at retrieving information. 27.Which of the following ways of remembering is NOT mentioned in Paragraph 2? A.Listening. B.Re-reading. C.Speaking. D.Using pictures and diagrams. 28.According to Jeffrey Karpicke, learning is about ________. A.practicing drawing pictures and diagrams B.quickly getting knowledge from our memory C.retrieving important information at any moment D.trying different ways to remember new information. 29.What can we learn from the text? A.Each group got the same score in the later test. B.Retrieval practice is better for recalling information. C.Concept mapping is the best learning method for all people. D.There’s a close relationship between listening and reading. 30.What would be the best structure (结构) of the passage? 27.第二段提到“Some of us remember best by listening, some by re - reading, and others learn best by using pictures and diagrams (图表).”,其中提到了通过听、再读以及使用图片和图表来记忆,没有提到“Speaking(说)”。 28.第三段中“‘Learning is about retrieving important information at any moment. So it is important to make retrieval practice an important part of the learning process.’” 29.第四段中“However, when they were asked to return one week later, the group who practiced retrieval scored higher than the group who made diagrams. So by practicing retrieval, we are able to recall information far better, which will help us study better.” In Chinese culture, horses are a symbol of energy, speed and success. He learned everything from his father and made toys the 36 way for many years. Children loved his strong, smooth wooden cars and animals. His small shop was always 37 . Then, Paul opened a bigger 38 in the town center. “My way is the best way,” he always said 39 . But after some time, fewer children visited. He still used the same wood and tools, but kids now liked bright, 40 toys. One afternoon, a girl came in with a small electric toy bird that could chirp (鸣叫). “Look at 41 I have got!” she said. Paul didn’t like such toys, but he smiled and 42 it. To his surprise, the electronic toy bird’s 43 was lively and cheerful. His own wooden toys, although well-made, 44 a little quiet and plain (普通的). The girl’s mother said gently, “Your toys are 45 , but children today enjoy things that can move or make sounds. Why not 46 something new?” Paul felt a little embarrassed. He had always thought these new toys were cheap and noisy. Now he 47 things had changed. That evening, he began to experiment. He added small bells to his wooden cats and wheels that rattled He kept his careful carving but added something fun. A.personal information B.questions on laughter C.art skills D.health care advice B The first time I held a violin, I was five. C Have you ever wondered when exactly your brain truly becomes “fully grown”?
