A skilled weaver (织工) named Wang Pengwei in Dingzhou, Hebei, has finished a five-year project. She and her team have recreated a famous Chinese painting, Along the River During the Qingming Festival, using a traditional craft called kesi.
This kesi copy is 8.2 meters long. The video of this artwork received over 300 million views online after it was shown on TV. For Wang, this artwork was a dream come true. “I’ve always dreamed of creating one piece that can truly show the highest level of this art,” she says.
Kesi is different from normal weaving. Each color area is woven separately. To weave the clothing of a boatman, the team used different colors of silk thread (丝线). The weavers worked very hard every day, often finishing only a very small part. Over five years, the project took a large amount of time. “We wanted to give up many times. Our eyes were almost going blind from the close work,” Wang Pengwei says. “However, when the work was finally finished, our team cheered. That sense of achievement is something I will never forget.”
Now, Wang Pengwei’s son, Wang Bo, is working to keep kesi alive. He parted with his own business to learn the skill. “When you’re weaving, your mind empties. You only think about how to successfully weave the next thread,” Wang Bo says. He has a clear plan for the future: first, learn the skill well and pass it on; then, make daily products so that kesi can be used in homes, not just shown in museums.

Zhang Guohui has been making ships, from over 30-meter-long boats to meter-long model ones, for more than sixty years.
“Every minute, I keep thinking about making it perfect,” said Zhang, an expert on the watertight-bulkhead technology of Chinese junks (中国水密隔舱福船制造技艺). In 2010, it was included on the list of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) by UNESCO.
Zhang was born in a poor family in a small fishing town along the coast. Due to his family’s hard life, he had to start making a living by fishing alone at the age of 16. During his time out at sea, he gradually became deeply interested in designing and making wooden boats. As a quick and diligent learner, he showed great talent in boat-making. Later, he was sent to Quanzhou and Xiamen for professional training. With years of practice, he finally grew into a respected master skilled in building traditional Chinese junks.
With the development of the modern shipbuilding industry, the need for large wooden boats dropped. Zhang began making model ships using his 20 years of shipbuilding skills. He feared that the traditional skills would die someday. Luckily, he met Wang Lianmao, the former director of Quanzhou Maritime Museum, in 2007. After their meeting, he started to repair old ships and make model ships for the museum.
In 2016, Zhang received an invitation to give lessons to college students. He was glad to share traditional Chinese shipbuilding skills with young people. The students became interested in ancient boat-making. Quite a few of them spent their holidays learning the old skills carefully. Zhang felt warm and deeply moved by their love for traditional culture. He hoped the valuable skills would not disappear. So he made up his mind that he would keep teaching people and passing on the wonderful traditional skills. “As long as I’m alive, I’ll keep passing on the skills.” Zhang once said.

Leaf carving is an ancient form of folk art in China. Artists use natural fallen leaves to create wonderful works. This art is special because artists follow the leaves’ natural shapes and vein lines (纹路) to work.
I first watched leaf carving in the studio of Chen Lining, a famous artist in Jiaozuo, Henan. He sat quietly with a brush and a small knife, focusing all his attention on a big leaf. The common fallen leaf seemed to get a new life in his hands.
Chen Lining told us that making a leaf carving has simple steps: choosing leaves, carving, polishing and pressing. First, pick suitable leaves. The best leaves have clear veins, a wide surface and even small holes. These natural marks are perfect for carving. After choosing leaves, wash them carefully and put them in water to keep them soft. Dry leaves break easily, so this step is very important.
The hardest part is carving. Artists watch the natural vein lines closely and use a small knife to cut out beautiful patterns little by little. This work needs a steady hand and a long-term focus. One small mistake can break the whole leaf and ruin the work. When carving is finished, workers polish the leaf and press it flat. Finally, a common fallen leaf turns into a wonderful art piece. With careful hands and good skills, they make lovely and amazing patterns on thin leaves.
Leaf carving tells us that small and common fallen leaves can become special and beautiful artworks. It is a perfect way to mix nature and art together. We just need creative ideas and love for nature.

“Singing is the start of music. By singing, we make ourselves physically part of music and music part of us,” writes composer Andrew Ford, host of The Music Show.
Songs have a powerful influence on us. Has anyone discovered the joy of singing in a choir (合唱团)? Mary works as a busy teacher, and choir practice nights are simply her “sanity”. “There are nights when even I don’t feel like going to choir but by the time we’ve finished. I’m glad I came,” said Mary.
Research says choir singing is really good for you. By watching the health signs of members of a choir, Bjorn Vickoff at a University in Sweden discovered the singers’ hearts started to beat in step with their breathing. There seemed to be a wave of air moving through the group, making them feel connected as one. Research has shown that choir singing has comforting influences similar to those that come from breathing exercises in yoga.
Singing also produces hormones and other happy chemicals, fighting against depression and loneliness. Singers have been found to have lower levels of stress after choir singing. And a later study also found that singing reduces anxiety and that group singing can be especially good for the health of older adults.
At the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, choir after choir was put on stage by singers with no big names. But this is real music to Tony Backhouse’s ears. The choirmaster spent thirty years in Australia founding and working with choral groups. “If I were asked to redesign the Australian educational system, I would start by strongly suggesting that group singing become a central part of daily activity. I believe it builds character and, more than anything else, encourages a taste for cooperation with others,” said Tony. For him, the meaning of group singing is “cooperation, rather than competition. Singing teaches us to listen, which is a great gift. In my community choir. It’s about creating something amazing together, and we really aim to make every rehearsal a thing of joy and beauty.”
13.What does the underlined word “sanity” probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Peace. B.Plan. C.Duty. D.Sadness.

A.Singers’ practice makes their hearts beat faster.
B.Singers’ heartbeats match with their breathing.
C.The stage air changes singers’ breathing speed.

Comic (漫画) books are often not allowed in class, but students at Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School at Yangzhou, Jiangsu, get to enjoy them in their comic class.
“Comics are not just for fun with no real values,” said the class teacher, Hu Xinlei, who has taught comics for 20 years. “Many of them carry deep ideas and can also criticize (批判) problems in real life.”
In class, students read classic Chinese and foreign comics such as Father and Son and Winter of Three Hairs. But the class is not only about reading. With the teacher’s help, students learn to look at comics from different points of view. They study the basic forms of comics and explore the deeper meanings behind each story.
“We often get ideas from classic comics to create new stories,” said 16-year-old Hu Shiyuan. “It’s very interesting to find connections between the past and the present.” Hu once told the story Sima Guang and the Water Jar (《司马光砸缸》) in a new way. In her comic, Sima needs a stone right away to break the jar and save the person, but someone is sitting on the only stone and won’t move. Hu used it to show the problem of people who refuse to give up their seats to others.
For the students, the class is more than an art class. “I used to think comics were just about drawing cartoon characters, but now they have become a powerful tool to share my thoughts,” said 15-year-old He Liyan. “I hope to create more interesting work in the future.”

Twenty-five years ago, a small cartoon pig from Hong Kong changed the world of animation (动画). Today, McDull is still remembered as a symbol of creativity and heart, noted the Hollywood Reporter.
In 2001, the film My Life as McDull told the story of a simple pig and his everyday difficulties. The movie became a surprise success. It won a major prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and a Golden Horse Award. It even beat Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at the Hong Kong box office for a short time, Yahoo reported. Producer Samuel Choy said the film stood out because it was “unique and original” (独特和原创).
Unlike many US or Japanese animations, My Life as McDull does not focus on heroes saving the world or exciting adventures. US animation often features superheroes or fantasy (奇幻) worlds, while Japanese works often have large settings. However, McDull’s story takes place on ordinary Hong Kong streets, showing simple daily life, such as school, meals and time with his mother.
These everyday scenes help people connect with the story, noted the Paper. McDull is not smart or perfect. He often fails, but he keeps trying. This “persistence in ordinary life” makes him feel real and close to everyone.
Since then, the animation world in China has changed a lot. In 2025, animated films made huge amounts of money at the box office. Big hits like Ne Zha 2 showed how popular local animation has become, making billions worldwide.
The business has also grown outside of movies. At events like Hong Kong Filmart, experts talk about new ideas such as artificial intelligence (AI), global teamwork, and selling products based on popular characters, according to Qianjiang Evening News. The McDull team is also exploring new projects, including a stage performance and a spin-off animation (衍生动画作品).

A.Giving up easily. B.Failing once.
C.Being very clever. D.Continuing to try.
24.What can we learn from the passage?
A.US animations are often about superheroes.
B.McDull’s story includes many exciting adventures.
C.Chinese local animation is less popular than before.
D.The McDull team is using AI technology to remake the film.

Art could often seem unreachable because it had always been considered as something that only educated or wealthy people can enjoy. However, this can’t be further from the truth! Anyone can come to enjoy art with a little bit of time and effort.
Understand the historical context (环境) of the time when the art was produced. Artists often create works to express their opinion on big historical events, and this can give you a window into their perspectives.
Find out the type of the painting. If you’re looking at a painting, knowing what type it is in can be helpful.
Learn about the art movements (运动) or schools that influenced the piece. In the art movements, certain ways of creating art became very popular. An art “school” is basically just a group of artists, sometimes all in the same area, who all have a similar style or subject matter. Knowing a little bit about these can help you understand why an artist might have made certain choices.
Read up on the life and perspective of the artist. Learning a bit about the artist who created a piece can help people understand it in different ways. It can help you understand why artists made certain artistic decisions, or chose to make the work at all in the first place.
Learn when the piece was produced. Art museums typically have informational signs next to each work that will provide basic information about the piece. Knowing when a piece of artwork was created can help you know the difficulty the artist had in making it.
Offer your own understanding of what the art means. Part of the fun of viewing art is that you get to come up with your own story about it! Art is influenced by one’s own opinion, so even if your understanding of a piece isn’t exactly what the artist meant, it’s okay! There is often not just one right answer. What’s important is that you really make efforts to get meaning from the works.

The Starry Night was painted in June 1889 during Vincent van Gogh’s stay at a home for the mentally ill. Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window—the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. He also painted circles of white and yellow racing across the sky. Under this amazing sky, there’s a sleeping village and a dark, lonely tree. His unusual use of color has led experts to think that Van Gogh’s mental illness may have affected his sense of sight (视力). Though Van Gogh thought The Starry Night was a failure, it is now world-famous.
The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1893. What makes it striking is that it shows a thin person with an expression of fear—the person’s mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream (尖叫). The person covers his or her ears and looks directly at the viewer. This person is set on a bridge above a stormy sea, and against a burning orange-red sky. In his diary, Munch talked about his inspiration. “I was walking down the road with two friends when the sun set; suddenly the sky turned as red as blood ... I stood there shaking. Then I heard the scream of nature.” Many experts say the picture is connected to Munch’s mental health problems.
The Empire of Light, painted by Belgian artist René Magritte between 1953 and 1954, shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night. What is strange is that above the house and the tree, we see a daytime sky full of brightness and soft white clouds. It seems mysterious. The Empire of Light has produced different reactions (反应) in viewers. Some feel the painting looks dark and troubling. Others, however, find it calming. As for Magritte himself, he thought the change between day and night was surprising. “I call this power: poetry,” he said.

①Oscar Wilde once said, “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask (面罩), and he will tell you the truth.” Art provides a way to communicate experiences when people have difficulty expressing themselves with words. Art has been developed as an expressive skill for solving problems. Art therapy (疗法) is built on the belief that everyone is creative and has the ability for self-expression.
②Art therapy, in its own ways, can make a difference to our health. As a way to help you become healthier, it allows people to express themselves by drawing and painting without saying anything. Even a 30-minute creative activity can change a person’s mental state (精神状态). Working with an experienced art therapist does even more. It can greatly improve people’s feelings and well-being (健康).
③Young children usually draw, sing and dance without worrying about their abilities. Adults, however, are often more worried about art and art making. They begin to worry about the quality of their art instead of self-expression itself. As a result, many advantages of creative self-expression are lost. However, art therapists can guide people in expressing themselves without concerning whether their artworks are technically fantastic, so that they can connect or reconnect with the artworks that help them deal with life challenges.
④What is art therapy’s superpower? It can lead and change dangerous thoughts into imaginative artworks. For example, people who are more likely to be physically violent (暴力的) may let out their anger by hitting another person. However, with art therapy’s help, their energy can be changed into creative works. These artistic choices satisfy the brain’s strong wish for new things without hurting personal safety.
39.How does the writer begin the text?
A.By listing a number. B.By describing a scene.
C.By using a famous man’s words. D.By showing a fact.
40.What can we infer from Paragraph ③?
A.Adults can create higher-quality artworks than children.

If you had one million dollars to spend, would you buy a famous painting or sculpture (雕塑)? Most people would not think of buying art. They think of art as something that cannot be used. Many people enjoy looking at pieces of art, but there are not many people who would pay a lot of money for art. Maybe this is why some people are surprised when a piece of art sells for a lot of money.
Why are some art pieces so expensive? Who decides how much art is worth anyway? Works by famous artists, such as Monet or Picasso, are worth a lot of money. But the value may go up or down based on (以……为根据) if a work is real and how common it is. For artists who may be new or not so well-known, the value of their art may go up or down based on an art expert’s opinion of it.
However, sometimes the value of art does not follow rules. For example, Jackson Pollock is best known for his paintings that look like paint was thrown on a wall. Still, his paintings sell for millions. Another artist’s photograph of a simple, brown potato sold for more than a million dollars. These are examples of when the value given to a piece of art may confuse (使困惑) some.
In the end, the value of a piece of art depends on each person. What may be worthless to one person may be very valuable to another. In the end, the buyer decides the worth of a piece of art. The value of a piece of art just becomes the price someone pays for it.
43.What do most people think of art according to the passage?
A.Art is important to everyone. B.Art is something useful in daily life.
C.Art is only valuable to artists themselves. D.Art is something that cannot be used.
44.How does the writer think about art?
A.Art is not useful at all. B.Art is only for the rich.
C.Art’s value is different for each person. D.Art should not be sold for money.
45.Who is known for paintings that look like paint was thrown on a wall?
A.Monet. B.Jackson Pollock. C.Picasso. D.Van Gogh.
46.Which of the following doesn’t decide how much the art is?
A.The artist’s name. B.Whether it’s real or not.
C.The art experts’ opinions. D.The weight of the artwork.
47.What is the main topic of the passage?
A.The history of art. B.The dream of art.
C.The value of art. D.The war of art.

Sugar painting, as the name suggests, is a kind of painting made of sugar. It’s sugar for us to taste and a painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in sugar-making technology. Sugar, the valuable product once reserved (保留) for the emperors and princes, also entered the homes of common people. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of the Song and Yuan dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people started to draw designs with syrup (糖浆), and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to heat the sugar before painting. Since syrup can harden as it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon, a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art has been dying out recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer because of decreasing demand. What’s worse, few people seem willing to pass on the art, except for those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is an art form that is difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has brought the art into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered and passed on.
48.When did sugar painting appear?
A.In the Warring States Period. B.In the Tang Dynasty.
C.In the Yuan Dynasty. D.In the Ming Dynasty.
49.Why should sugar painters make their works very quickly?
A.To show their excellent skills. B.To keep the syrup from becoming hard.
C.To protect the spoon and the table. D.To reduce people’s waiting time.
50.What’s the writer’s attitude towards today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4?
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful. C.Worried. D.Unclear.

Picture this: You’re in art class, bored with common pencils, but then your teacher hands you a digital pen and a bright screen. Move your finger and colors spread like rainbows! Make a mistake? Tap (轻敲) “undo” and it’s gone—no messy paper. This is digital art, where technology helps you create anything you imagine!
Think about drawing a dragon but adding too many heads. With paper, you’d need to start over. But with digital tools? Fix it in a click! Apps like Procreate (a drawing app) let you try fun ideas: green skies, flying cats—anything! Artist Emma Lee says, “Digital art feels like magic—you can change your work easily!”
What if your hobby becomes a job? Li Wei, a 15-year-old from Shenzhen, learned digital art on his iPad and now sells cartoon stickers (贴纸) online. “It’s like turning ideas into money!” he laughs.
Some say, “Real art needs paint and brushes!” But digital tools don’t replace skills—they make them better. You still learn shading (明暗处理) and drawing, but add cool effects or make your art move! Schools in China even teach digital art for jobs like game design.
Digital art helps nature, too—no paper waste! Share art online to encourage others.
Ready to try? Use free apps like Krita, and let your creativity fly! Remember: “The future belongs to brave creators!”

Chinese calligraphy shows the beauty of our characters (汉字) and is now getting popular around the world.

9.Which question does the first paragraph answer?
A.Who invented leaf carving? B.What is leaf carving?
C.When did leaf carving first appear? D.How do artists make leaf carving?
10.How do artists carve a leaf?
A.They color the leaf with brushes first.
B.They follow vein lines and cut patterns with a knife.
C.They press the leaves flat before they cut the fallen leaves.
D.They choose dry leaves with large holes to make carving easier.
11.What can we infer from the passage?
A.It is easy to pick leaves for carving.
B.The leaf won’t break while carving.
C.A lot of practice is needed for leaf carving.
D.Artists can finish a leaf carving in just a few minutes.
12.What does the writer want to tell us by introducing the leaf carving?
A.To study different kinds of leaves. B.To encourage people to do leaf carving.
C.To show the difficulty of leaf carving. D.To have a creative mind and love nature.
9.第一段写道“Leaf carving is an ancient form of folk art in China. Artists use natural fallen leaves to create wonderful works.”
10.原文第四段明确指出“Artists watch the natural vein lines closely and use a small knife to cut out beautiful patterns little by little.”
11.原文第四段提到“This work needs a steady hand and a long time focus. One small mistake can break the whole leaf and ruin the work.”这项工作需要稳定的手和长时间的专注。一个小错误就能毁掉整片叶子。由此可推断,叶雕需要大量的练习才能掌握。A项“挑选叶子很容易”与文中“pick suitable leaves... The best leaves have clear veins...”暗示需要仔细挑选,并非易事;B项“雕刻时叶子不会碎”与原文矛盾;D项“艺术家只需几分钟就能完成一件叶雕”与“长时间专注”不符。
12.文章最后一段写道“We just need creative ideas and love for nature.”

A.He saves the world bravely. B.He is smart and perfect.
C.He is close to every common person. D.He lives in a fantasy world.
23.What does the word “persistence” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Giving up easily. B.Failing once.
C.Being very clever. D.Continuing to try.
24.What can we learn from the passage?
A.US animations are often about superheroes.
B.McDull’s story includes many exciting adventures.

30.Why did art often seem unreachable according to Paragraph 1?

B.It comes from the art movements.
C.It helps an artist make correct choices.
D.It helps understand the historical events.
33.What’s part of the fun of viewing art according to the last paragraph?
A.Creating the art of your own.
B.Becoming a talent for enjoying art.
C.Explaining art with your own story.
D.Understanding exactly what the artist meant.

【解析】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了三幅世界名画:《星月夜》《呐喊》和《光的帝国》,分别阐述了它们的创作背景、画面内容、艺术特色以及与艺术家个人情感和经历的关联。
34.第一段明确提到“Van Gogh painted what he saw from his window—the night sky with clouds, stars and a moon. He also painted circles of white and yellow racing across the sky. Under this amazing sky, there’s a sleeping village and a dark, lonely tree.”,这直接说明梵高在《星月夜》中画了夜空、一个沉睡的村庄和一棵孤独的树。
35.第二段指出“What makes it striking is that it shows a thin person with an expression of fear—the person’s mouth is wide open and letting out a powerful scream (尖叫).”,这直接说明《呐喊》这幅画展示了一个表情恐惧的瘦人。
36.第三段提到“The Empire of Light, painted by Belgian artist René Magritte between 1953 and 1954, shows a beautiful house lit by lights from inside, surrounded by the darkness of night. What is strange is that above the house and the tree, we see a daytime sky full of brightness and soft white clouds. It seems mysterious.”,由此可知“it”指代的是《光的帝国》这幅画中的景色,即“the scenery in The Empire of Light”。
