M: Why did you retire from athletics, Gemma?
W: I’d achieved several medals for coming second and third in world events and felt I had the ability to keep on going. And I had been lucky enough not to pick up too many injuries. But the truth was, I was fed up with living out of a suitcase all over the world for my job.
M: Fair enough. And was it easy to adjust to life after retirement?
W: Initially, no. And after I’d had a rest, I started applying for paid jobs. I needed something to do to distract me from thinking about the good things about being an athlete.
M: So was it easy with your background to find a job?
W: Not at all. When employers looked at my résumé, there was no evidence that I was capable of doing the job they were advertising.
M: But eventually someone took you on and then five years later, you set up your own company to help retired sportspeople. Was the business an immediate success?
W: Not in the very early days. But I didn’t give up. I always had a reputation for being a strong person when I was an athlete. What kept me going most of all was the knowledge that my business would meet a real need.
18. What is the speaker mainly talking about?
A. Technical aspects of podcast production.
B. The importance of podcast episode length.
C. Strategies for growing a podcast’s audience.
19. What is podcasts’ average drop-off rate in the first five minutes?
A. About 18%. B. About 28%. C. About 38%.
20. What is the purpose of Call-To-Action remarks in podcast openings?
A. To make the episode unique.
B. To preview the later content.
C. To obtain more followers.
C 19. B 20. C
M: Hello everyone. Nowadays more and more people start a podcast channel. There are around 30 million podcast episodes out there, so making sure that your podcast draws in your listeners is more important than ever. Having engaging content throughout each show is essential. Studies have shown that podcasts lose 28 percent of listeners on average in the first five minutes, which is about 10 percent higher than the drop-off rate for the midsection of the episode. A great podcast opening should show new listeners who you are, what your podcast is about, and why they should listen. But, at the same time, it needs to engage your existing audience. The best podcast openings are unique to each episode and include a preview of later content. They often include special music or sound effects. Many also have some Call-To-Action remarks, such as “Follow us for daily tips and inspiration!” This could be encouraging listeners to follow you on the podcast platform.

B(24-25学年高二下·河南九师联盟期末)
I am an ecologist from Zimbabwe, but I’ve been based at the National University of Lesotho in Maseru for more than 13 years. Lesotho is a mountainous inland kingdom in southern Africa. Its high-altitude (高海拔的) wetlands support the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which delivers water to the Vaal River System in South Africa, generating both income and electricity for Lesotho.
I study the ecological balance that keeps those areas functioning properly: The wetlands t rap water when it rains and release it gradually during dry periods. An important part of this is to map the plants, animals and general environmental conditions, and how they change over time.
One of our team projects monitors the soundscapes of those areas to identify the animals that live there. We put sensitive recording equipment in the field for weeks at a time. This is of great help because, although that site is just 180 kilometers from my university in the capital of Lesotho, it can take up to four hours to drive there.
The data we gather are huge, and although we do listen to the recordings, we mainly use software to help us analyze the data. We want to compare our recordings between seasons, between dawn and dusk (晨昏) and between day and night, to understand the rhythms of the ecosystem. We also compare our recordings from different wetland types. High-altitude areas are easier to be affected by climate change and, in my view, it is the greatest threat those protected wetlands face.
Listening to the recordings makes me happy because I enjoy hearing a variety of sounds, especially the singing of different birds. In a small country like Lesotho, there are so many knowledge gaps to fill — it’s one of the benefits of being a researcher there. I hope that in the future some of you in this classroom will contribute to this as well.
24. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Collecting water on rainy days. B. Harvesting electric power.
C. Studying the ecological balance. D. Surviving during dry periods.
25. Why is it helpful to leave the recording equipment in the field for weeks?
A. It can attract more animal lovers. B. It can save time on traveling there.
C. It can offer directions to new drivers. D. It can test the quality of the equipment.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. What to do with the recordings. B. Why climate change is a threat.
C. How to record sounds in the wild. D. When natural sounds are recorded.
27. Where can you most probably find the text?
A. In a news report. B. In a speech.
C. In a research paper. D. In a travel guide.
C 25. B 26. A 27. B
根据文章第二段“I study the ecological balance that keeps those areas functioning properly: The wetlands trap water when it rains and release it gradually during dry periods. An important part of this is to map the plants, animals and general environmental conditions, and how they change over time.(我研究的是保持这些地区正常运转的生态平衡:湿地在下雨时蓄水,在干旱时期逐渐放水。这其中一个重要的部分是绘制植物、动物和一般环境条件的地图,以及它们是如何随时间变化的。)”可知,this指的是研究生态平衡,故选C项。

(我们把敏感的录音设备一次放上几个星期。这是很有帮助的,因为尽管那个地方离我在莱索托首都的大学只有180公里,但开车到那里却需要长达四个小时的时间。)”可知,把录音设备留在野外几周可以节省去那里的时间,故选B项。
26.主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“The data we gather are huge, and although we do listen to the recordings, we mainly use software to help us analyze the data. (我们收集的数据量非常大,尽管我们确实会听录音,但我们主要使用软件来帮助我们分析数据。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是如何处理录音数据,故选A项。
27.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“I hope that in the future some of you in this classroom will contribute to this as well. (我希望将来在座的一些人也能为这方面做出贡献。)”可知,这篇文章最有可能出现在一篇演讲中,故选B项。
C(24-25学年高二下·江苏无锡期末)
Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the 4,500-year-old iconic (圣像的) Giza Pyramid, which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world.
Giza is actually made up of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.
What we see now is only the core structure of the Great Pyramid. Although the pyramid has been studied closely for centuries, there are two mysterious blanks that have kept archaeologists (考古学家) puzzled.
One void (空间) is around 98 feet long and 20 feet high and could be one large space or several rooms, according to previous scans of the pyramid, while the other is much smaller, just beyond the north face of the pyramid. Archaeologists are not sure what either void functioned as; the most exciting possibility is that the larger space is the hidden burial chamber of Khufu, who was in power from around 2,551 BC to 2,528 BC.
The voids were discovered in 2017 when a project named Scan Pyramids ran a series of scans that analyzed the cosmic particles that fall to Earth (muons) to detect spaces within the structure. Muons are negatively charged elementary particles that form when cosmic rays collide (碰撞) with the Earth’s atmosphere. They are useful because they behave differently when interacting with stone, or water, versus air.
“We plan to field a telescope system that has upwards of 100 times the sensitivity of the equipment that has recently been used at the Great Pyramid,” a team of scientists wrote in a preprint paper — yet to be reviewed by other scientists.
“Since the detectors that are proposed are very large, they cannot be placed inside the pyramid, therefore our approach is to put them outside and move them along the base. In this way, we can collect muons from all angles in order to build up the required data set,” the team wrote in the paper.
28. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To describe an ancient wonder. B. To present the new technology.
C. To highlight the Giza Pyramid. D. To introduce background information.
29. What do we know about the new technology?
A. It moves above the base and builds up data.
B. It scans the side of the pyramid and collects muons.
C. It detects the outside of the pyramid and collects data.
D. It looks into the pyramid and records the structure inside.
30. What does the underline word “they” refer to in paragraph 5?
A. Comic rays. B. Muons. C. Scans. D. Elementary particles.
31. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Putting the detectors outside to collect data.
B. Discovering the voids using new technology.
C. Fielding a telescope system to study the pyramid.
D. Uncovering the internal secret of pyramid using HEP.
D 29. D 30. B 31. D
根据第一段“Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the 4,500-year-old iconic (圣像的) Giza Pyramid, which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world.(埃及有100多座金字塔,其中包括有4500年历史的标志性建筑吉萨金字塔,它是世界上现存的古代奇迹。)”和第二段中“Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.(现在,科学家们正在使用高能物理(HEP)扫描吉萨的胡夫结构。这项新技术使用宇宙射线介子,比以往任何时候都更深入地扫描金字塔,然后绘制其内部结构。)”可知,第一段介绍了吉萨金字塔是提供背景信息,进而引出下文中新的金字塔研究技术。故选D项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure.(这项新技术使用宇宙射线介子,比以往任何时候都更深入地扫描金字塔,然后绘制其内部结构。)”
根据第五段中“Muons are negatively charged elementary particles that form when cosmic rays collide (碰撞) with the Earth’s atmosphere. They are useful because they behave differently when interacting with stone, or water, versus air.(宇宙射线介子是带负电荷的基本粒子,当宇宙射线与地球大气层碰撞时形成。它们是有用的,因为它们在与石头、水和空气相互作用时表现不同。)”和指代关系可推知,“They”指代上文中提到的“Muons”,即宇宙射线介子。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics (HEP) to scan the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons (宇宙射线介子) to scan deeper into the pyramid than has ever been seen before, and then map its internal structure. (现在,科学家们正在使用高能物理(HEP)扫描吉萨的胡夫结构。这项新技术使用宇宙射线介子,比以往任何时候都更深入地扫描金字塔,然后绘制其内部结构。)”可推知,本文介绍了使用高能物理(HEP)来揭示金字塔内部结构的新技术,所以“Uncovering the internal secret of pyramid using HEP.(利用HEP揭示金字塔的内部秘密。)”
D(24-25学年高二下·浙江宁波期末)
A recent study issued in Science reveals that misinformation online spreads “further, quicker, more profoundly, and more widely than factual news”. This effect is particularly obvious for false political news compared to misinformation regarding terrorism, natural disasters, scientific topics, urban legends, or financial matters. False news is 70 percent more likely to be reported on Twitter than the truth, researchers found. And false news reached 1,500 people about six times faster than the truth.
The study by Soroush Vosoughi and associate professor Deb Roy, both of the MIT Media Lab, and MIT Sloan professor Sinan Aral, is the largest-ever longitudinal (纵向的) study of the spread of false news online. It uses the term “false news” instead of “fake news” because the latter “has lost all connection to the actual accuracy of the information presented, making it meaningless for use in academic classification,” the authors write.
To track the spread of news, the researchers investigated all the true and false news stories proved by six independent fact-checking organizations distributed on Twitter from 2006 to 2017. They studied approximately 126,000 cascades — “instances of a rumor (谣言) spreading pattern that exhibits an unbroken report chain with a common, single origin” — on Twitter about contested news stories posted by 3 million people more than 4.5 million times. Traditionally, either the application or the users are responsible for spreading rumors. The researchers conducted an experiment by removing Twitter robots before running their analysis. They then included the robots and ran the analysis again and found none of the main conclusions changed.
So what to do? In an interview for the MIT Sloan Experts video series, Aral said possible solutions include labeling fake news much as food is labeled, making unfavorable financial policies such as reducing the flow of advertising dollars to accounts that spread fake news, and using algorithms (算法) to find and control the effect of fake news.
32. What is special about false news?
A. It pays more attention to political information.
B. It enjoys more online popularity than the truth.
C. It misleads viewers with seemingly true words.
D. It involves more types and fields than the truth.
33. For what consideration does the study use the term “false news”?
A. Value of research. B. Academic tradition.
C. Research methods. D. Severity of problems.
34. What might the experiment in Paragraph 3 show?
A. Humans are more likely to spread false news than robots.
B. The researchers didn’t rely on robots to reach conclusions.
C. The number of views of the two analyses remains the same.
D. Twitter robots have changed the spreading chain and pattern.
35. Which of the following tips does Aral agree with?
A. Advertising to persuade people to identify fake news.
B. Labeling fake news about food as much as possible.
C. Using AI to locate fake news and weaken its harm.
D. Collecting taxes on accounts spreading fake news.
B 33. A 34. A 35. C
根据第一段中的“False news is 70 percent more likely to be reported on Twitter than the truth, researchers found. (研究人员发现,假消息在推特上被报道的可能性比真相高出70%)”可知,假消息在推特上被转发的可能性要比真相高出70%,即假消息在网络上更受欢迎。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“It uses the term “false news” instead of “fake news” because the latter “has lost all connection to the actual accuracy of the information presented, making it meaningless for use in academic classification,” the authors write. (作者写道,它使用“false news”一词而不是“fake news”,因为后者“与所呈现信息的实际准确性失去了所有联系,因此在学术分类中毫无意义”)”可知,相较于“false news”,“fake news”这一术语有研究价值和意义。故选A.
根据第三段中的“Traditionally, either the application or the users are responsible for spreading rumors. The researchers conducted an experiment by removing Twitter robots before running their analysis. They then included the robots and ran the analysis again and found none of the main conclusions changed. (传统上,要么是应用程序,要么是用户负责传播谣言。在进行分析之前,研究人员通过移除Twitter机器人进行了一项实验。然后,他们将机器人纳入其中,再次进行分析,发现主要结论没有改变)”可知,在假消息的传播链条中,推特机器人没有发挥作用,言外之意就是剩下的一个因素——人,比机器人更可能传播假消息。故选 A。
根据最后一段中的“So what to do? In an interview for the MIT Sloan Experts video series, Aral said possible solutions include labeling fake news much as food is labeled, making unfavorable financial policies such as reducing the flow of advertising dollars to accounts that spread fake news, and using algorithms (算法) to find and control the effect of fake news. (那么该怎么办呢?在接受麻省理工学院斯隆专家系列视频采访时,阿拉尔表示,可能的解决方案包括给假消息贴上标签,就像给食品贴上标签一样,制定不利的金融政策,比如减少传播假消息的账户的广告资金流,以及使用算法来发现和控制假消息的影响)”可知,Aral 同意的做法包括使用算法来发现并控制假消息的影响,也就是利用人工智能来定位假消息并削弱其危害。故选 C。

F. Positive emotions play an important part in unfreezing our thinking
G. "Beginners' mind" allows us to remain open to experiences despite any knowledge we may have
D 37. B 38. G 39. A 40. E
37.空前提到“我们可以改变一下环境”,B项“对一些人来说,一些小的改变可能就起作用”呼应上文,都是关于改变,空后一句中“reorganizing our desk or taking a new route to work”是B项中“small changes”的具体内容;且B项与下文“However, for others , bigger changes such as a new job or a marriage are required.(然而,对另一些来说,需要大一点的改变比如一份新工作或者婚姻)”形成对比。故选B项。
39.空处位于句首,是段落主题句,根据本段内容“diverse experiences, views and backgrounds”及“Because they are key drivers of the development of new ideas and solutions.(因为它们是新思想和解决办法发展的关键驱动因素)”可知,本段主要说差异的好处,所以A项“寻找差异也有帮助”切题。故选A项。

Mr. Taylor checked again; water, food, bandages, medicines, a compass, and a map wrapped in plastic... Bingo! He put all that he prepared for the coming hiking into his backpack.
Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons. Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. “It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely,” he whispered to himself, unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.
Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip.Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray(防虫喷雾). Harry told Joel he smelled terrible while Joel called Harry a coward(懦夫).
“Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together?” their father said.“You' re missing all of the beautiful scenery!”
It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn't looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all, they hadn't paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.
“Joel threw a stick at me!” Harry screamed.
“That's not true!” Joel shouted back.
Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. “Both of you need to stop arguing!”he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down the muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path.
Harry and Joel raced to their father's assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.
Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

But his glasses came off when he fell in the water. Mr. Taylor sighed before he quickly took off his wet clothes and squeezed the water out. As Mr. Taylor wrapped the wound with the bandage, the bothers began to quarrel over how they could continue hiking if Dad was unable to see clearly. “This is your fault!” Harry snapped. “If you hadn't thrown that stick—”“Me? You' re the one who wouldn't stop complaining!” Joel yelled, glaring at him with burning eyes.
“Don't argue any more.” Mr. Taylor shouted. “Without my glasses, we need to work together to find our way.” Harry and Joel exchanged a guilty glance---their bickering had led to this. Joel, recalling his explorer books, suggested using the map and compass to navigate, while Harry, drawing from his hiking club lessons, proposed tracing their path along the riverbank. For the first time that day, the brothers cooperated, guiding their father carefully along the trail. As they moved forward, the argument forgotten, they finally noticed the towering trees, the distant call of the eagle, and the quiet beauty of the wilderness—— just as their father had wanted all along.
