Once upon a time, a princess lived happily in a nice palace with her prince who used to be a frog. But lately, she noticed he was quiet. He always looked out at the pond (池塘) for hours because he really wanted to be back there.
“What’s wrong, my dear?” the princess asked one morning. “It seems silly,” the prince replied, “but I miss all my friends who live in the pond. We had great fun together! If I could become a frog again, I would show you how wonderful life can be underwater!”
The princess thought living in a dirty pond sounded awful, but she wanted to cheer him up. So she secretly asked a fairy(精灵)for help. The next day, they met by the pond. With a smile and a wave of the magic stick, the fairy’s magic worked.
The couple began to get smaller! The princess looked at her hand—it was turning green. When she looked into the water, she saw a froggy face looking back at her. The prince jumped in. Taking a deep breath, the princess followed.
The cool water felt good! Opening her big eyes, she saw something beautiful, such as moving water plants and shining fish eggs. With a move of her feet, she went quickly through the water. This was fun! The prince was there with her. “See? I told you it was nice!” he said, his voice full of joy.
“Welcome to our home!” Many goldfish greeted them. “Hello frog prince!” said a freshwater fish in his slow voice. The princess was very happy. This was a whole new world to learn about! Perhaps she and the prince could spend their summer holidays in the pond every year!

Magic words are only in fairy tales, but the word “why” is almost magical. From science to art, it has changed and even reshaped the world many times.
Every great achievement in human history starts with a question: a “Why?”, a “What if?”, or “Shall we try?”. Most discoveries start with a question, too. Sometimes as simple as “What is this?” or “What’s over there?” Often, the more you know about something, the more questions you have.
Curiosity (好奇) is so important. It’s how people get to know each other, solve problems and learn. When children are babies, everything is a question—even before they know enough words to be able to ask one. Early life is full of tiny experiments. Sometimes the answer to “What happens if I do this?” is “I fall down and it hurts” —but that’s still an important lesson.
Sometimes, as people get older, they can worry that asking questions makes them sound silly, but the cleverest people in the world spend their lives asking questions. No great genius has ever sat back and said, “That’s enough knowledge for me.” The more answers, the more questions.
Start small and get bigger. If you ask questions about the world around you, you’re doing the most important thing people ever learned to do. So, now it’s over to you to ask questions. And remember—there’s no such thing as a silly question.
23. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. A fairy tale. B. A “why”. C. A magic way. D. A “what”.
24. Why does the writer mention babies in Paragraph 3?
A. To show what curiosity is. B. To tell when they learn to speak.
C. To describe how they ask questions. D. To explain why curiosity is important.
25. What does the sentence “there’s no such thing as a silly question” mean?
A. There are no silly questions. B. Don’t ask any silly questions.
C. Stop asking questions as getting older. D. Asking something you don’t know is silly.
26. Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A. People spend much time answering questions.
B. Old people often ask questions about their lives.
C. People should always have the spirit of questioning.
D. Great persons have enough knowledge for their work.

Chinese researchers have found a new microbial weed (杂草) killer. It can control weeds without polluting the environment and also helps crops (农作物) grow. It may take the place of traditional chemical weed killers in the future.
The discovery was made by a research team led by Sun Juan from Qingdao Agricultural University after years of hard work. The team spent a long time doing research and testing to make sure the new weed killer is safe and useful. Their findings were recently published online in an international magazine called Crop Protection and got worldwide attention.
Alfalfa (苜蓿草) is one of the world’s most important crops to feed animals. However, it has long been a big problem in growing alfalfa. Farmers usually use lots of chemical weed killers to get rid of the weeds. These chemicals not only pollute the land and water but also bring serious risks to food safety and human health.
To solve the problems, the research team found a new kind of fungus (真菌) in the soil (土壤) around alfalfa roots. They named it MXBP304. It can help kill weed seeds but do little harm to alfalfa’s seeds to sprout or the growth of young alfalfa plants. It also keeps the natural balance of the soil, so it can control weeds in a “zero pollution” way.
Now the team is still working hard to improve MXBP304 and related technologies. They want to put the eco-friendly weed killer into practical use soon. If it is successfully used, farmers will have a greener and safer way to control weeds.
27. Who found the new kind of weed killer?
A. A farmer from Qingdao. B. A team from a university.
C. A researcher from Crop Protection. D. A group from a farming company.
28. What problem have farmers had in growing alfalfa for a long time?
A. Costing too much. B. Not enough land.
C. Controlling weeds safely. D. Not enough water.
29. What does the underlined word “sprout” probably mean?
A. Die in the soil. B. Be eaten by insects.
C. Turn into weeds. D. Produce new leaves.
30. Why does the writer write the passage?
A. To introduce an eco-friendly discovery.
B. To warn people about the dangers of weeds.
C. To teach readers the way of growing alfalfa.
D. To advertise some famous Chinese inventions.

【答案】23. B 24. D 25. A 26. C
【解析】

【23题详解】
根据第一段“the word ‘why’ is almost magical. From science to art, it has changed…”
根据最后一段“If you ask questions about the world around you, you’re doing the most important thing people ever learned to do.”可知,作者认为“问问题”是非常重要的,要敢于提出问题,所以“there’s no such thing as a silly question”意思是“根本没有傻问题”。
【26题详解】
通读全文,作者强调提问的重要性,认为最聪明的人一生都在提问,因此作者赞同“人们应该始终保持提问精神”。
D
【答案】27. B 28. C 29. D 30. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了中国研究人员发现的一种新型微生物除草剂,这种除草剂能控制杂草且不污染环境,还能帮助农作物生长,未来或许会取代传统化学除草剂。
【27题详解】
文章第二段指出“The discovery was made by a research team led by Sun Juan from Qingdao Agricultural University...”,说明是青岛农业大学的一个研究团队发现了这种新型除草剂。
【28题详解】
文章第三段提到“However, it has long been a big problem in growing alfalfa. Farmers usually use lots of chemical weed killers to get rid of the weeds. These chemicals not only pollute the land and water but also bring serious risks to food safety and human health.”,表明长期以来农民种植苜蓿草面临的问题是安全地控制杂草。
【29题详解】
文章第四段提及“It can help kill weed seeds but do little harm to alfalfa’s seeds to sprout or the growth of young alfalfa plants.”,结合语境可知,这种真菌能帮助杀死杂草种子,但对苜蓿种子发芽或幼苗生长危害很小,所以“sprout”意思是“发芽,长出新叶”,与“Produce new leaves”意思相近。
【30题详解】
文章第一段“Chinese researchers have found a new microbial weed (杂草) killer. It can control weeds without polluting the environment and also helps crops (农作物) grow. It may take the place of traditional chemical weed killers in the future.”点明主旨,介绍了中国研究人员发现的一种环保的新型除草剂,所以作者写这篇文章是为了介绍这一环保发现。

【答案】例文:
Failure is something we all meet in life. I still remember my first 800-meter race. I trained hard but came last. I felt so upset that I wanted to give up running.
However, my PE teacher told me, “Falling doesn’t mean failing. Getting up again is what matters.” So I kept practicing every day. The next time, I finished faster, though still not first.
From this failure, I learned that trying again is more important than winning. Failure is not the end—it’s a lesson that makes us stronger. Now I’m never afraid of failing, because every failure brings me one step closer to success.
