Ms. Jones’s class was going to put on a play, Alice in Wonderland. The students took turns reading lines to the teacher, hoping to get their favourite parts.
The next day, they eagerly checked the noticeboard to see which parts they got. Shirley was disappointed that her dream role, Alice, had gone to Ella. Three boys were also unhappy because they got no parts to play but the job of helping out backstage with Shirley.
“Why do we have to do all the hard work while they get all the attention?” complained Jerry. Sam pulled a long face as he felt the same way.
“Come on,” said Andy. “Our work is important too, and it can be fun!” He was right. For the next two weeks, they built the sets together and found the work very enjoyable and satisfying.
Finally, the big day arrived. Jerry and Shirley helped with costumes. Andy controlled the lights and sound, and Sam managed the stage curtain. When Ella came on stage, Shirley was not very pleased. Since Ella always seemed self-important, Shirley had never liked her. But seeing her act with natural confidence, Shirley thought, “Ms. Jones was right. Ella is perfect for the role.”
The play went really well. As everyone clapped and cheered, Ms. Jones invited the backstage helpers onto the stage. Shirley smiled at Ella, “Nice acting!” Ella smiled back and replied, “Thank you for the beautiful sets. They truly made the play very special.”
“Our talented actors and hard-working backstage team have shown us the true power of team spirit,” Ms. Jones said proudly. “Now let’s celebrate the success of our play together!”
11. What did the three boys have in common with Shirley according to the passage?
A. They all really wanted to play the role of Alice.
B. They all helped out backstage instead of acting.
C. They all got their favourite parts of the play.
D. They all found the work boring and difficult at first.
According to the passage, complete the Story Mountain by answering the Questions 2-3.

第二段提到:“Three boys were also unhappy because they got no parts to play but the job of helping out backstage with Shirley.” 这说明三个男孩和Shirley的共同点是没有得到表演角色,而是都做幕后工作。
【12题详解】
根据故事山(Story Mountain)结构,“Climax”处应填写故事的高潮事件。文中高潮部分是演出成功:“The play went really well. As everyone clapped and cheered...” 因此选D。
【13题详解】
故事山“Falling action”部分对应Ella感谢Shirley、Shirley称赞Ella表演的情节。此时Shirley的态度由之前的“not very pleased”转变为主动微笑称赞,说明她感到“happy and friendly”。
【14题详解】
根据最后一段:“Our talented actors and hard-working backstage team have shown us the true power of team spirit,” Ms. Jones said proudly.

Five children — Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane, and their baby brother — moved to a house in the country. Near the house was a gravel-pit. One day they dug in the sand and found a strange, furry creature. It was a Psammead, a sand-fairy that granted wishes. But each wish lasted only until sunset.
For their first wish, the children asked to be very beautiful. The Psammead changed them at once. But when they went home, their nursemaid Martha did not recognize them and locked them out. They had to wait until sunset to look like themselves again. They spent a terrible afternoon without lunch or tea. They were unhappy.
The next day they wished for gold. The Psammead filled the gravel-pit with gold coins. The children filled their pockets and went to town to spend them. But the gold was old and strange, so no shop took it. People even called the police, thinking they were thieves. Just in time, the sun set and the gold disappeared. Then Martha took the children home.
Later they wished for wings. Flying was wonderful, but they got hungry. They took plums from a garden and then took food from a vicar’s house. Tiredly, they fell asleep on a church roof. When they woke up at night, their wings were gone and the door was locked. They shouted for help, and the vicar rescued them. Again, a wish left them in a difficult situation.
Another time, Robert fought with the baker’s boy and lost. Angrily, he said, “I wish I was bigger than him!” Without thinking, the Psammead made him three metres tall. Now he could not fit into the house. The children took him to a fair, where people paid to see the giant. Robert felt silly, and at sunset he returned to his normal size.
The biggest trouble came when Jane wished their mother to have the jewels like those of a rich lady. A rich lady lost her jewels at that time and the jewels appeared in the house. Only Martha’s boyfriend came to the house. So their mother thought Martha’s boyfriend stole them and wanted to call the police. The children rushed to the Psammead and used their last wishes to fix everything: they wished the lady had never lost her jewels, their mother did not go to the police, and that everyone forgot about the jewels. All wishes came true.
Finally, the Psammead, tiredly but free, went back into the sand. The children hoped to see it again someday.

My Growth Story
Life is not always easy, but the support of others can light up the darkest moments. I’d like to share my own growth story.

Luckily, my classmate Li Wei noticed my change. He invited me to join a study group. We shared learning methods and encouraged each other. Step by step, I believed in myself again. My grades improved, and I found true friendship.

“Why do we have to do all the hard work while they get all the attention?” complained Jerry. Sam pulled a long face as he felt the same way.

Technology is changing the world of work very fast, and many people are looking back on their career with mixed feelings. Some workers, like the window cleaners who call themselves ____26____ “/'spaɪdəmen/”, find joy in their daily work. They work high above the city, clean tall buildings under the burning sun in summer or the cold ____27____ in winter, and build strong communication with kind people around them. Sometimes office workers wave to them ____28____, and sometimes shop owners offer them cold water on hot days. These warm moments make their simple job ____29____ and bright.
However, some traditional jobs may no longer be ____30____ /'nesəsəri/ as new technology develops quickly. For example, supermarket ____31____ /kæ'ʃɪə(r)z/ may be replaced by self-checkout machines soon. People can pay by phone or scan codes without talking to others, so fewer workers are needed at checkouts. Even plane ____32____ /'paɪləts/, who are highly respected for professional skills, might face competition from smart autopilot systems in the near future.
Machines can finish the tasks but only humans can connect heart to heart. The window cleaner still remembers a nice day ____33____ /'klɪəli/. On a hot summer afternoon, when he was sweating all over and his eyes were full of tired tears, a kind woman noticed him. She smiled brightly and handed him a piece of cool, juicy watermelon. He was so tired and thirsty after working for hours, ____34____ the sweet fruit made him feel warm and happy at once.
These touching stories from daily work remind us we can face the changing world with ____35____ and hope. No matter what the future holds, the warmth and good memories from our jobs will always shine in our hearts.
