As a writer, I miss rejection slips. Not that I enjoyed receiving those pre-printed slips of paper, but at least when I got one, I was pretty sure that a flesh-and-blood____16____had put it in the envelope. And there was always the chance I might see a handwritten sentence on the bottom,____17____ the piece almost made it. When an editor at Me Call’s wrote, “ I’m afraid I have to say no on this ____18____piece, but try me again on another, would you ?”, it was almost as ____19____ to me as if she had said, “We’ll ____20____ it and here is an advance for you.”.
Nowadays, rejection slips seem to have disappeared with the use of online submissions. Most editors don’t feel it a must to ____21____ they have received, read, or considered your work because they receive so many ____22____each day.
For me, there are three ____23____ of rejection slip pain. The first is____24____ brought on by finding a flat “no” on a _____25_____ piece of paper, then followed by anger (how could they _____26_____ a piece that is obviously so much_____27_____than most of the stuff they print), and, finally, rebirth: I will live to _____28_____a new piece another day.
Learning to _____29_____ rejection seems like part of growing up as a writer. Despite the many letters of acceptance I have received, my folder of “ Noteworthy Rejection Slips “is far _____30_____ than that of “Noteworthy Acceptances”, which indicates to me the fact: I still have some growing up to do.

Hawking died on Wednesday at the age of 76. Tributes for famed theoretical physicist, cosmologist and best-selling author Stephen Hawking filled social media sites overnight. Scientists, media personalities, celebrities and many of the millions around the world who were influenced by his work and inspired by his life shared their thoughts:
His passing has left an intellectual vacuum in his wake. But it's not empty. Think of it as a kind of vacuum energy permeating (渗入)spacetime. Stephen Hawking, RIP 1942-2018.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) March 14, 2018
Stephen Hawking, RIP. Sad to hear about Stephen Hawking. What a remarkable life. His contributions to science will be used as long as there are scientists, and there are many more scientists because of him. He spoke about the value and fragility of human life and civilisation and greatly enhanced both.
— Brian Cox (@ProfBrianCox) March 14, 2018
Our world has lost a shining light. Blessed with a brilliant mind and uncommon grace, he opened so many minds to the wonders of our universe. Courageous and undefeated by misfortune, he believed deeply in the power reason.
— Dan Rather (@DanRather) March 14, 2018
It had to happen, eventually. We were lucky to have him for so long, and I was lucky to be able to work with him. A truly fabulous human being. Stephen Hawking. Funny, perverse, and, of course, brilliant.
— Sophia Nasr (@Astropartigirl) March 14, 2018
RIP Stephen Hawking. Genuinely very sad to hear that. If you haven’t, read A Brief History of Time. It’ll make the world feel more amazing and beautiful and strange. It’ll also make you feel smart and stupid all at once.
— Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) March 14, 2018
“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.” If understanding the Universe makes us special, then Dr. Stephen Hawking was truly extraordinary.

For several days I (Jane Eyre) saw little of Mr Rochester. In the morning he seemed much occupied with business, and in the afternoon gentlemen from the neighbourhood called and sometimes stayed to dine with him. When his foot was well enough, he rode out a great deal.
During this time, all my knowledge of him was limited to occasional meetings about the house, when he would sometimes pass me coldly, and sometimes bow and smile. His changes of manner did not offend me, because I saw that I had nothing to do with the cause of them.
One evening, several days later, I was invited to talk to Mr Rochester after dinner. He was sitting in his armchair, and looked not quite so severe, and much less gloomy. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were bright, probably with wine. As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, “Do you think I’m handsome, Miss Eyre?”
The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realised it: “No, sir.”
“Ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude.”
“Sir, I’m sorry. I should have said that beauty doesn’t matter, or something like that.”
“No, you shouldn’t! I see, you criticise my appearance, and then you stab (刺) me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you. But perhaps I go too fast. Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance (抵消) your few good points.”
I thought to myself that he might have too. He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, “Yes, you’re right. I have plenty of faults. I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again. I might have been very different. I might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser. I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn’t my character, but circumstances which were to blame. Why do I tell you all this? Because you’re the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you’re sympathetic and give them hope.”
It seemed he had quite a lot to talk to me. He didn’t seem to like to finish the talk quickly, as was the case for the first time.
“Don’t be afraid of me, Miss Eyre.” He continued. “You don’t relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood School has had on you. But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You’re like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you’ll fly very high. Good night.”
35. What’s not Miss Eyre’s impression of Mr Rochester in the beginning?
A. Busy. B. Sociable.
C. Friendly. D. Changeable.
36. From what Mr Rochester told Miss Eyre, we can conclude that he wanted to ________.
A. tell her all his troubles
B. tell her his life experience
C. change her opinion of him
D. change his circumstances
37. At the end of the passage, Mr Rochester sounded ________.
A. rude B. cold
C. friendly D. encouraging

As we all know, the war is an ancient custom which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern skill has changed this. Either man will stop war, or war will stop man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the greatest danger, but bacteriological (细菌学的) or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? If we succeeded in stopping war, there would be no danger for us. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre (大屠杀), but by arbitration (仲裁) in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (意识形态) would prevent war. I believe this to be a complete error. All ideologies are based upon beliefs without proof which are, at least, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Those people who believe them are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the Hi-tech bomb.
38. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. We may face greater threat from weapons.
B. Nuclear weapons are worst of all.
C. Man’s idea of victory has changed.
D. Dangerous weapons are forbidden nowadays.
39. The author of the passage believe that ________.
A. it is impossible to live without war
B. differences between East and West will lead to war
C. war will be stopped by modern skill
D. war must be stopped if man wants to survive
40. Which is the only way to stop war according to the author?
A. To stop nuclear weapons.
B. To settle international issues through agreements.
C. To destroy bacteriological and chemical weapons.
D. To let the stronger side take over the world.
41. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.
A. nuclear war will definitely not take place
B. real agreements have been reached now
C. world opinion is still divided on nuclear war
D. man is beginning to realize that nuclear war is the greatest enemy
42. What does the author feel while writing this passage?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful.
C. Worried. D. Disappointed.
D
The Forbidden City is well known for being full of Chinese cultural and historical relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City does not just focus on the stories of the past.
Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec. 16, focuses on ordinary people — the restorers of relics and antiquities.
The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
“If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair: You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship in the restorers. “Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance, loneliness… All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”
Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people’s ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
43. According to the text, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City?
A. To show people how antiques are restored
B. To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people
C. To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers’ lives
D. To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers
44. What can we learn from what Wang Jin says in paragraph4?
A. He often gets tired with his work
B. There is no need to do restoration work fast
C. Antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful
D. It takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration
45. What is the purpose of the bicycle-riding scene in the documentary?
A. To remind the audience of the last Qing emperor
B. To show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers
C. To encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration in the future
D. To show that the documentary breaks from the old, dull image of antique restorers

How quickly could an 18-year-old find the problem of a car and solve it? Pretty fast, as it turns out. As a student from Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, Arfanjan Osmanjan recently won the first prize in an Anhui provincial vocational (职业的) students skills competition.
His natural talent and training in diagnostics (诊断学) at the vocational school in Hefei, capital of Anhui province, mean Arfanjan seldom fails to find and solve the problems presented to him. “I value the opportunity to study very much and dream of being the best automotive air conditioning maintenance technician (维修技师) through three years of study here, so I often stay up late to practise.” he said. Arfanjan entered the school in 2014 through an educational program that offers students in Xinjiang opportunities to study in inland provinces.
His father has also been a vehicle maintenance technician in Urumqi for some years. The son had dreamed of becoming a dancer, but his father persuaded him to study vehicle maintenance, which he saw as a more practical career choice. He quickly became interested. “Solving problems and fixing cars is amazing,” Arfanjan said. “My father was only able to repair the VW (Volkswagen) Santanas, while I want to be good with as many car brands as possible.”
Teachers at the school of 4,000 students said, “Arfanjan is one of the best students among the 300 Xinjiang students studying there. I’m deeply impressed how hard he works and his positive attitude towards challenges.” The school started to accept Xinjiang students in 2011, and the school covers the cost.
“With the skills learned here, it will not be a tough call to find a job in my hometown,” he said. But Arfanjan decided to stay in Hefei for some years. “Anhui province is much more developed than my hometown, and I want to learn more here so that I can get a better career in Xinjiang in the future.”
46. What makes Arfanjan seldom fail to find and solve the problems? (no more than10 words)

1. —Have you got any paper on you?
—________, but I have none at all.
A. I mean it B. I wouldn’t say no C. I beg to differ D. I hate to say this

2. ________ so many students chose to take this exam stems from their admiration for Qian Xuesen’s spirit.
A. That B. What C. This D. Which
【答案】A
【解析】
【详解】考查主语从句。句意:如此多的学生选择参加这次考试源于他们对钱学森精神的钦佩。此处引导主语从句,从句中不缺成分,句意完整,所以用只起连接作用、无实意的that引导。故选A。
3. The main reason why Asian elephants are endangered is _________ used to be home to them have been seriously destroyed.
A. where B. what C. that where D. that what
4. The number of people who ________ immediate financial assistance in the affected areas ________ sharply in recent weeks.
A. are in need of; have risen B. is in need of; has risen
C. are in need of; has risen D. is in need of; have risen
【答案】C
【解析】
【详解】考查主谓一致。句意:最近几周,受灾地区需要紧急经济援助的人数急剧上升。短语in need of意为“需要”。 第一空,先行词people为复数,定语从句谓语用复数are;第二空,主语 The number of… 表示“……的数量”,作主语时谓语用单数,主动词用has,根据句意应是are in need of和has risen。 故选C。
5. Every boy and every girl, as well as teachers who ________to visit the museum, ________asked to be at the school gate before 8:30 in the morning.
A. is, are B. are, is C. is, is D. are, are
【答案】B
【解析】
【详解】考查主谓一致。句意:每个男孩、每个女孩,还有要去参观博物馆的老师们,都被要求早上 8 点半前在校门口集合。第一空who指代前面的 teachers(复数),谓语复数are;第二空Every boy and every girl作主语时,谓语用单数,所以用 is。故选B。
6. People sit uncomfortably on plastic chairs, looking through old magazines, ________ have been read hundreds of times previously.
A. all of whom B. each of whom C. all of which D. each of which
根据后面的have可知,这里应用all of which引导,all指代magazines,为复数。故选C。
7. Our class __________ all fond of singing English songs and we can sing __________ than others.

C. is; much more D. are; much more
【答案】B

【答案】38. A 39. D 40. B 41. D 42. A
