New Rules for E-bikes in China
Do you ride an electric bicycle (e-bike) to school in the morning? From September 1, the new national standards for e-bikes have taken effect.
Speed ≤25km/h
·If the e-bikes go at a speed higher than 25 kilometres per hour, the motor will stop running.
Other rules
·With the Beidou system, owners can check on their phone where the bike is. Besides, this function also helps with traffic management—for example, in a traffic accident involving an e-bike, the positioning data can be used to find out the accident process.
·Modifications (改装) to certain parts of e-bikes, such as the battery and speed limiter are not allowed.
·The use of rearview mirrors and turn signals is encouraged. Rearview mirrors help riders observe the traffic situation behind, while turn signals allow other road users to clearly understand where the rider wants to go.
________
·E-bikes (including batteries) must not be more than 55 kilograms. This rule can let the bike run farther and need less charging. What’s more, it is easier for riders to control, especially in unexpected situations.
Age rule
·People who ride electric bikes must be no younger than 16. Kids under 16 can’t ride them on public roads. They don’t have enough skills and experiences to deal with busy traffic. Besides, people over 12 years old are not allowed to be carried on e-bikes as this will make the bike too heavy and dangerous to drive.
Helmet wearing requirement
·Riders and passengers (if any) must wear safety helmets when riding. Helmets are the most useful protective equipment to reduce head injuries in an accident fall or crash.

B.Because they aren’t prepared to deal with busy traffic.
C.Because they don’t have enough skills to carry other kids.
D.Because too many e-riders on the road may cause busy traffic.
4.The underlined word “equipment” means ________.
A.tools used for a certain purpose B.money needed to buy something
C.people who operate a machine D.place where something is made
5.The Beidou system can help e-riders ________.
A.avoid traffic accidents B.observe the traffic situation
C.manage modification of e-bikes D.find the location of the e-bikes
6.What’s the purpose of these rules?

The American Trail is a very popular section in the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Visitors love to see the active animals. However, they may not be aware of the hard work of the zookeepers. Every day, the keepers are busy preparing food, training animals, among many other duties. Let’s take a look at one of their typical jobs. 7 a.m.
The first thing we do in the morning is check on all the animals in our charge. We take a head count and make sure everyone appears healthy. Our North American beavers (河狸) are active at night. We give them a quick hello and try not to disturb their rest. 8 a.m.
Every day, we sort through (分类整理) more than 100 pounds of fish for our sea lions and seals (海豹). Together with our volunteers, we make sure that the fish is of the highest quality before we feed it to an animal. 8:30 a.m.
Our sea lions are fed many times a day. Each feeding is an opportunity for us to carefully check every part of their bodies. 9:30 a.m.
It’s time to train our gray wolves. We would ask for an action. If the animal performs the required movement, he or she will be given a meatball. Of course, the animals can choose to walk away, and they won’t be punished (惩罚) for doing that. 10:15 a.m.
Our daily sea lion and seal show begins! Our visitors are always surprised at the intelligence of these animals. Through our shows, they also learn how to help protect sea animals. 1:45 p.m.
Our beavers wake up. We feed them and do a careful body check on each of them. 2:20 p.m.
We train the other animals, including the river otters (河獭) and the ravens (渡鸦). Neither rain nor cold can keep us from our duties. We care for the animals 365 days a year.

Why Media Literacy Matters
These days, teens are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t yet considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: Today’s teens lack media literacy. In other words, they have difficulty critically thinking about the information they see. One study focused on middle school students. It found more than 80 percent of them couldn’t tell the difference between real news stories and ads that looked like news.
Stanford University professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor gave an example that shows why media literacy matters. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. “With a news story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details. These details largely depend on the opinions of the news director,” said John. “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one aspect at one point in time. There is more going on.”
Some experts think school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone—from parents to journalists—should help teens learn the skill.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts recommend the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” said John.
1.What can we conclude from paragraph 1?
A.Teens today spend more time using the internet than watching TV.
B.Teens today spend more time watching TV than studying at school.
C.Teens today spend more time reading newspapers than watching TV.
D.Teens today spend more time studying at school than using the Internet.
2.What is the serious problem that several studies have shown?
A.Many teens today don’t read the news.
B.Many teens are not reading real news stories.
C.Many teens today are not interested in school.
D.Many teens cannot think critically about the information they see.
3.The underlined word “matters” in paragraph 3 can probably be replaced by ________.
A.is boring B.is popular C.is important D.is interesting
4.What does the example Professor Kevin John gave show?
A.Some news directors are not responsible.
B.Different news stories focus on different details.
C.Many of his students do not have media literacy.
D.It’s hard to tell the difference between real news and ads.
5.Many experts suggest children start learning media literacy ________.
A.when they are able to read
B.when they are 12 years old
C.after they get into high school
D.after they get into middle school
6.Which of the following statements would Professor Kevin John agree with?
A.Media literacy should be taught mainly at school.
B.News directors should report the news they’re interested in.
C.Children should be taught media literacy as early as possible.
D.It’s too early for children to learn media literacy in their teens.

What is the future of artificial intelligence (AI)? Will it be possible for robots to be autonomous (自主的)? If so, when will that happen and will it be a good thing?
2 answers Panda021 28 June
I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the computing power, though I do think it will happen within the next thirty or forty years. We will probably remain in control of technology and it will help us solve many of the world’s problems. AI is popping up in the world around us. Recent developments include self-driving cars, drones carrying life-saving equipment to people at sea and face recognition. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives, but whether that is true will be partly up to us.
I have to admit that the potential consequences (后果) of creating something that can match human intelligence frighten me. Even now, scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. Human beings evolve (进化) biologically very slowly and we would be quickly replaced. In the short term, there is the danger that robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large underclass of unemployed people. This could mean large-scale poverty and social unrest. In the long term, machines might decide the world would be better without humans.
1.________ will help us save the people in danger at sea.
A.Self-driving cars B.Drones C.Face recognition D.Boats
2.We can infer (推断) from Paragraph 2 that ________.
A.Artificial intelligence (AI) must be a good thing.
B.We have already developed the computing power successfully.
C.AI will help us solve all of the world’s problems.
D.Humans have the responsibility for the future of AI.
3.According to Expert B, creating autonomous robots will make people ________.
A.be in trouble B.relax C.become happy D.feel tired
4.What does the underlined phrase “take off” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.remove something B.leave the ground and begin to fly
C.suddenly start to be successful D.leave hurriedly
5.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Scientists are teaching computers how to learn on their own now.
B.Robots will take over millions of human jobs.
C.A large underclass of unemployed people will cause large-scale poverty.
D.Machines will become less intelligent than humans.
6.Which topic best fits the blank?
A.Robots Are Our Friends B.Robot: Friend or Foe (敌人)?
C.Robots Are Not Our Friends D.Robots and Artificial Intelligence
British driver Mike Newman enjoys breaking speed records. In 2013, he broke two—the land speed and the water speed records. This achievement is more amazing because Mike cannot see. He was born with a serious eye disease and became blind at eight.
For many years, Mike did not think it was possible to take part in motor sports. But at the age of forty, he began to ride motorbikes and then he tried cars. “I love the engines, the smells, the noises which come with it,” he says.
When he isn’t breaking records, Mike runs a charity called Speed of Sight. The charity helps other blind people to take part in motor sports.
In 2000, at the age of fifteen, Chris Brown had a serious car accident. He lost his left leg. For the next few years, he found it very difficult to live with his disability. But in 2008 he saw a man with one leg cycle up a hill. “I can do that,” he thought, and he learned to cycle. It was really difficult. He failed countless times but he quickly picked himself up.
In 2009, he began to compete in races for disabled cyclists. His ambition was to compete in the Paralympic Games (残奥会) in 2021 and he worked hard to be in the French team. But then the rules for the competition changed and Chris could not take part because his condition did not match the new rules. So Chris found a new challenge: cycling up mountains. Now he competes in mountain races and cycles around 27,000 kilometres every year!
Alana Nichols was a sporty child. She loved ball games. Her ambition was to study sports at university. But then, at the age of seventeen, she broke her back in a serious snowboarding accident. She couldn’t walk. For two years, she did not know what to do with her life.
But at the age of nineteen, she discovered a new sport: soft volleyball. She became part of the national team and won a gold medal at the Paralympics.
Alana realized that other sports were possible for her too. She tried surfing and basketball. Then she tried skiing. She worked hard. At the 2010 winter Paralympics, she became the only one to win gold medals at the summer and winter Paralympic Games when she won four medals for skiing. Then, in 2014, she won another prize at the winter games.
1.Mike Newman’s problems with his eyes began ________.
A.when he was bornB.when he was eightC.when he was seventeen D.when he was forty

B.He tried hard to cycle, but he still needed others to help him up.
C.He fell off his cycle many times, but he still kept trying.
D.He counted the times he fell off from the bike by himself.
4.Chris Brown didn’t compete in the Paralympic Games in 2021 because ________.
A.he wasn’t good enough for the French team B.he didn’t have the right kind of bicycle
C.he preferred to cycle up mountains instead D.he wasn’t allowed to take part by the new rules
5.In which sport has Alana Nichols won her most recent prize?
A.Skiing. B.Volleyball. C.Surfing. D.Basketball.
6.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Advantages of team sports B.Brave disabled in sports fields
C.Sports people with their talents D.Exciting games and their players

1.What’s the speed limit for e-bikes?
A.12 kilometres per hour. B.16 kilometres per hour.
C.25 kilometres per hour. D.55 kilometres per hour.
2.Which of the following is the best to be filled in the blank?
A.Riding distance B.E-bike total weight C.Battery life D.E-bike control
3.Why mustn’t kids under 16 ride e-bikes on public roads?
A.Because their body weight is not fit for e-bikes yet.
A.To stop kids from driving e-bikes. B.To give suggestions to road users.
C.To improve riding safety for e-riders. D.To inform riders of the speed requirements.
