Boys and girls, let's do an experiment in today's lesson to see what will happen.
Materials:
Instructions:
(1) Fill the glass about 2/3 full with water.
(2) Drop the egg carefully into the glass and watch it go down towards the bottom.
(3) Take the egg out and add salt. Test to see if your egg goes up.
(4) Add more salt if the egg is still at the bottom.
Science behind:
When the egg is put into water, whether it goes up or down depends on its density(密度) compared to the water's density. If it is denser than the water, it will go down to the bottom. Adding salt to the water makes the water denser. Once the water is denser than the egg, it will start to rise from the bottom to the top.
45. How many kinds of materials are needed for the experiment?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
46. What should you do if the egg is still at the bottom?
A. Take the egg out. B. Fill the glass with more water.
C. Add more salt. D. Drop another egg.

Imagine you are in a dark field at night, surrounded by tiny, twinkling lights. These aren't stars, but fireflies(萤火虫), tiny insects that have fascinated people for centuries with their magical glow(微光).
Do you know how fireflies make their tails glow? It happens when two chemicals in their own bodies join together and then produce light. But why do fireflies need to make glow in the dark?
Now, imagine you are a firefly looking for someone special in the dark. How would you find Mr. or Ms. Right? Fireflies use their glowing lights to send "hello" messages to each other. Each kind of firefly has its own special ways. The male fireflies send out signs, and the female fireflies answer back in their own special ways. They use their lights as a tool to get to know each other better, so that they can give birth to new fireflies.
__△__ Imagine you are an adult firefly in the shadows, and a big spider is trying to catch you. What can you do? You turn on your light! It's like a sign saying, "I taste awful. Do not eat me!"
But in today's world, fireflies face a new challenge: light pollution. As cities grow and become more brightly lit, it becomes harder for fireflies to communicate using their lights. This can stop fireflies from finding each other and even influence their living situations.
So, next time you see fireflies on a summer night, remember to enjoy their beauty and the amazing way they communicate. And think about how you can help reduce light pollution, so these tiny creatures can continue to light up the night sky. Their story is a reminder of the wonders of nature and the important role even the smallest creatures play in our world.
48. What can you learn from the passage?
A. Fireflies produce light by working with other fireflies.
B. Fireflies use their glow to communicate and protect themselves.
C. Fireflies use the same way to send a message to each other.
D. Light pollution has no influence on fireflies' living situations.
49. Which sentence can be put in the "__△__"?
A. Besides, fireflies also use lights to stay safe.
B. Besides, fireflies also use lights to make enemies like them.
C. However, fireflies send out signs to warn other insects.
D. However, fireflies use their lights to find food at night.
50. Why does the writer use "Imagine you are …" in Paragraph 1, 3 & 4?
A. To make the passage more interesting and catch people's attention.
B. To make the passage more scientific and make people believe it.
C. To express disagreement with people for not protecting fireflies well.
D. To give readers suggestions on how to get to know fireflies more.
51. What's the best title of this passage?

C. The Role of Fireflies in Nature D. The Importance of Knowing Fireflies

After staying in prison(监狱) for 19 years, Jean was a different man, filled with hate. One evening, he knocked on the door of the bishop(主教) of Digne's house.
When the bishop's sister looked at Jean at the door, she was afraid and said in a low voice, "Look at him! He is a dangerous man with a yellow card. He was once a prisoner, a bad man." The bishop, a kind man, didn't listen to his sister. "Come in, my friend," he smiled, inviting Jean to dinner using silver plates and candlesticks(烛台).
After dinner, Jean couldn't stop thinking of the plates. "I can sell those plates," he thought. "For just one, I can eat well for months!" Keeping this in mind, he stole them at night.
Next morning, people all talked about a poor man carrying six silver plates. Hearing that, the police caught Jean and took him back to the bishop. But there, they had a surprise.
"My friend!" the bishop said to Jean. "So pleased to see you. I gave you the silver plates and the candlesticks, you remember? But you forgot to take the candlesticks."
"But this man is a stealer!" said one of the policemen. "No," said the bishop, smiling. "I gave him the silver plates and candlesticks." "You mean he can go?" said the policeman. "Of course," the bishop said. All this time Jean stared at the bishop without saying anything.
After the policemen left, the bishop gave the two silver candlesticks to Jean and said, "My brother, you must leave your bad life behind you and start your new life."
With the silver in his hands, Jean left the town. "How can I hate people when this bishop is so good to me?" he thought. He cried for the first time in the 19 years. What to do next? Nobody knows, but when the sun rose, he was a changed man, ready to start a good life.

①Plants need to eat just like animals do. However, unlike animals, plants cannot move around to find food. Instead, they have developed special ways to get "food" from things around them.
②One of the main ways plants eat is through photosynthesis(光合作用). This process involves using sunlight, water and CO₂ to create glucose(葡萄糖), which is a type of sugar that plants use for energy. Chlorophyll(叶绿素) is responsible for catching sunlight and turning it into energy. Trees are some of the largest and longest-lived photosynthetic plants on the earth. They play an important role in controlling the earth's climate by taking in CO₂ from the air and giving off O₂.
③Another way for plants to eat is through their roots. Roots take in water and other things from the soil, which are then sent to the rest of the plant. This process is important for the growth and development of plants, as it offers them the nutrients(营养物) they need to live. For example, some plants are able to live in dry environments. Their roots are used to absorb water from the soil, and they have thick leaves to store water.
④Carnivorous(食肉的) plants are a great example of how plants get their food. Some plants eat insects(昆虫) and other small animals. These plants have special leaves that catch their food. For example, the pitcher plant(猪笼草) is a kind of carnivorous plant. Its leaves are in a special shape, with a smooth surface that makes it difficult for insects to climb out once they have fallen in.
⑤In a word, plants need food like animals but cannot move to find it. As a result, they have developed special methods to take in nutrients from their surroundings. Primarily, they use photosynthesis to turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into energy with the help of chlorophyll. Secondly, they absorb water and minerals from the soil through their roots. Also, some special carnivorous plants have been used to catching and digesting insects as another way to get food.
56. Which sentence uses "absorb" with the same meaning as the underlined word in Paragraph 3?
absorb /əbˈsɔːb/ v. ①吸收 ②理解,掌握(信息) ③承担(费用等) ④使全神贯注
A. It is difficult for me to absorb what the teacher says in English class.
B. The grass can absorb enough rainwater in the rainy season.
C. Can you absorb such huge losses?
D. He was absorbed in his work.
57. How does the writer show the fact that "Carnivorous plants have special leaves that catch their food." in Paragraph 4?
A. By comparing facts. B. By telling a story.
C. By offering an example. D. By listing numbers.
58. What's the structure of the text?
A. ①/②③④/⑤ B. ①/②③/④⑤ C. ①/②/③④⑤ D. ①②/③④⑤
59. What's the writer's purpose in writing the text?
A. To describe how plants get nutrients and energy.
B. To explain the process of photosynthesis.
C. To talk about the importance of roots in plants' growth.
D. To tell people why they should learn biology.

Tina, 14 years old, is a hard-working student. She follows the rules at school and does whatever her parents, teachers and even friends tell her to do. She is used to saying "yes" to everything. But Tina is not always happy about this. Sometimes, Tina doesn't have time to help others, but she just can't say no. How she wishes she could change!
Have you ever had such an experience? Saying "no" to others can be hard for some people. However, saying "no" is a basic right. It means you've made a choice about what is important to you.
So if you have the same problem as Tina, the first thing you need to do is to allow yourself to say "no". Keep in mind that if the other person cares about you, he or she will respect your decision and won't hold it against you.
If you still feel bad about saying "no", what can you do? When your friend invites you to a party you don't want to go to, you can start with something like "Thank you so much for inviting me, but I have a family event that day. I hope you have a great time!" When your friend asks you to clean the classroom for him, you can say, "I'm sorry. I'm really busy with my own homework right now. I can't help this time, but maybe we can work together next time."
If guilt keeps you from saying "no", try sharing something useful instead of your time. For example, if your friend asks you to help with his math when you are busy, you can lend him your notes or recommend a good book. You can also suggest someone else who can help. Maybe you know another classmate who is good at math and has more free time.
It's not easy to say "no", but it helps you to save energy for something important. At the same time, it also gives you a feeling of freedom.
Reading Report
Hi, everyone. Recently, I have read a useful article. It starts with a story of Tina, a 14-year-old girl who always says "yes" to others, but now she wants to ___74___ herself. Finally, share something useful instead of our own time. In a word, learn to say "no" so that ___77___.

The summer vacation is over. It's true that time always flies fast. During the vacation, the weather was hot and I didn't do much homework. But I had a fantastic time.
As the afternoon was quite hot, I did my homework in the morning. I used to get up at 6:30 and take a walk in the park for about an hour. After breakfast, I began reading English and Chinese and did some exercises in maths. Those took me three hours or more. I worked quite hard and made great progress. I spent the afternoon outside. I went to swim and it was funny. I would not go home until it was about five or six o'clock. Sometimes a friend would come to see me and we would spend some hours listening to music. In this way, I spent my vacation happily. And I not only studied well but also became a good swimmer. Now I am in good health and high spirits.

Nowadays, more and more students are under great pressure from study and exams. It is necessary for us to learn to manage our feelings and stay relaxed. Here are some useful ways.
First, learn to relax in proper ways. When we feel nervous or tired, we can take a short break, do some exercise or enjoy soft music. This helps us calm down and stay in a good state of mind.
Second, have communication with people around us. Whenever we meet difficulties, we can talk with our parents, teachers or close friends. Sharing worries not only makes us feel lighter but also helps us find better solutions.
Third, develop a positive attitude. We should set suitable goals and avoid pushing ourselves too hard. It's normal to meet challenges, so we need to believe in ourselves and never give up easily.
In a word, it's not serious to have pressure. If we follow these suggestions, we will surely reduce stress, improve our mood and make greater progress in life.
