Annie Maunder and Alice Everett charted the stars for a small salary and made a discovery,
which was credited to their male co-workers instead. Now,they have finally been given
recognition for their remarkable work in astronomy,as two asteroids (have been named
after them.
These two Victorian women, outstanding graduates of Cambridge University, both raised in
Northem Ireland, became good friends while studying mathematics at Girton College of
Cambridge in 1886.They weren't awarded degrees, however, which Cambridge held back from
female students until 1948,despite passing their exams with flying colors.
After graduating from Cambridge University, they both secured work in astronomy. They
worked at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich,London.Annie, after recording the largest sunspot
(太阳黑子)seen at Greenwich, married her boss Walter Maunder, and was forced to resigr.
However, she went on to assist her husband in scientific research and accompanied him on solar
eclipse expeditions(日食探险).
Alice observed and measured the positions of 22,000 suns in one year alone, and published
her research on star orbits. And she went on to work on groundbreaking research in optics (
and pursued further careers as a physicist and electrical engineer.Working with John Logie Baird,
who invented television, she succeeded in being granted joint patents with him relating to
television optics.
Later,Girton College proudly revealed on its website that "The International Astronomical
Union has announced,in partnership with the Catalina Sky Survey and the British Astronomical
Association, that two asteroids have been named for Annie Maunder and Alice Everett."
According to Dr Elisabeth Kendall from Girton College,Victorian women studying at the
college were often daring pioneers who knew that they were breaking new ground just by joining
the institute where they put their best foot forward in traditionally male scientific fields.
By naming the asteroids after Annie and Alice,Kendall firmly believes that the world is,after
all this time, acknowledging their scientific contributions to astronomy. This act is not only
righting a past wrong."It's about inspiring the future,"she said.
24.Why did Annie and Alice fail to get degrees after graduation from university?

A less-noticed explosion in screen time is happening within a different generation.
The digital habits that have transformed the teenage years are now coming to old age.
As ownership of digital devices becomes more common, older people's screen time is
growing.Last year Britons over 65 spent more than 3 hours a day online.Seniors even exceed
young adults in daily screen time when combining TV and smart devices.
In some countries, people are starting to worry about elderly smartphone users in the same
way that they worry about teens.Research from Japan found that screen time was associated with
less physical activity among the elderly.A survey of over-60s in China linked it to worse sleep. In
some elderly people, insomnia (turned out to be rooted in a fear of online scams;in others,
anxiety turned out to be caused by looking through social media.
Older people face some online risks.Unlike most teenagers, their phones and tablets are often
linked to their bank accounts."Microtransactions"within games can empty their wallets. So can
fraudsters(诈骗犯),who are able to contact and rob their victims within the same app.
The elderly lack the social guardrails that regulate teenagers'screen time.During the day
teachers police teens'phone usage, while parents do the nagging in the evening.By contrast,
elderly people are their own bosses."With older people, sometimes there is no one around,or no
one really notices what they're up to on their computer,"says Henrietta Bowden Jones, who runs a
British gaming clinic.
Yet increasing screen time among the elderly is by no means all bad.For people forced to
stay at home, because they feel unable to get out or because they can no longer drive, the ability to
follow pursuits online"is just so wonderful".Gaming passes the time. Some apps are nostalgia
(machines that bring childhood music and video rushing back.
Older people's enthusiasm for digital technology shows no sign of slowing down. For better
or worse, seniors'screen time has much further to grow.
28.What do the studies from Japan and China reveal about elderly screen time?
A.It greatly lifts the elderly's spirits.
B.It has no impact on daily routines.
C.It may cause some health problems.
D.It may lengthen outdoor activity time.
英语试题第5页共10页
29.What can be inferred about"Microtransactions"in paragraph 47
A.They are banned in most countries.
B.They only exist in children's games
C.They are preferred by elderly players.
D.They pose a financial tisk to older.
30.What does the underlined word"guardrails"in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Devices blocking online fraudsters.
B.Physical safety equipment on roads.
C.Rules preventing excessive screen use.
D.Applications monitoring bank accounts.
31.What is the author's attitude toward elderly people's screen time?
A.Unconcerned.
B.Objective.
C.Unclear.
D.Supportive.

Like humans,wild chimpanzees (engage in clever,turn-taking conversations,where
they wait just a fraction of a second for their turn to "speak".The animals communicate mostly
with hand movements and facial expressions.Scientists who studied their chats in detail found
that they took "fast-paced turns"when they exchanged information and also occasionally
interrupted one another.
The revelation suggests "deep evolutionary similarities to humans in how face-to-face
conversations are structured,"Prof Cat Hobaiter told BBC News.
This fast turn-taking is a feature of human conversation, explained Prof Hobaiter, who studies
primate(灵长类)communication.“We all take around200 milliseconds(a millisecond is a
thousandth of a second)between turns and show some interesting small cultural variations."
By examining thousands of instances of wild chimpanzees communicating with each other,
Prof Hobaiter and her colleagues were able to time the animals'conversations."It's amazing to
see how close the chimpanzee and human timings were,"she said.
As part of investigating the evolutionary origins of communication, the researchers have
spent decades observing and recording the behavior of five communities of wild chimpanzees in
the forests of Uganda and Tanzania. They have logged and translated more than 8,000 gestures
from over 250 individual animals.
Lead researcher Dr Gal Badihi, also at the University of St Andrews, explained that gestures
allowed the chimpanzees to avoid conflict and work with each other."So one chimpanzee could
gesture to another that they want food, and the other might give them food or,if they feel less
generous, respond by gesturing for them to go away. They might come to an agreement about how
or where to groom().It's fascinating, and done in just a few short gesture exchanges."
Dr Gal Badihi added that future studies looking at communication in other primate species
more distantly related to us will give us a more complete evolutionary picture of why we
developed this fast,back-and-forth form of conversation.
"It will be a great way to better understand when and why our conversational rules evolved,"
she said.
32.What is the finding of chimpanzees'communication?
A.They never interrupt others'speech.
B.They seldom use facial expressions.
C.They communicate in the human tone.
D.They wait for their shoit turns to speak.

33.How did the researchers carry out the experiment into chimps"communication?
A.By comparing them with humans.
B.By observing their chatting closely.
C.By interacting with them personally.
D.By recording their behavior in zoos.
34.What does the future research focus on according to Dr Badihi?
A.Why humans adopt the turn-taking chat.
B.How other primate species evolve like us.
C.What primates employ the turn-taking chat.
D.When chimps began to evolve their lifestyle.
35.What is mainly discussed in the text?
A.Chimps share humans'conversational style.
B.Chimps use gestures in their communication.
C.Chimps have a complex evolutionary process.
D.Chimps cooperate with each other to seek food.

Children as well as adults experience anxiety and stress all day long.If untreated, anxiety and
stress can lead to long-term emotional and physical problems.Even the loss of sleep can stress
your child and make them anxious.36
Adopt a nightly routine.Sleep disturbances can stress the system and create anxiety.Develop
a nightly ritual in which your child has time and space to discuss the problems of their day.37
This also gives your child a sense of security and the feeling that they don't have to deal with their
problems alone at night. In that case, they tend to sleep well.
38 Watch the news with your children, and provide explanations when necessary.
Seeing what they are watching enables you to ease whatever tension your child is experiencing as
they arise.Young children think concretely. When they see violent news, they may fear that their
families will be affected.
Help your child confront their fears.Create a dialogue with your child and discuss the things
that are bothering them.Your child can find solutions that emerge from the conversation.39
Plus, you can help your child practice role-playing how to relax under stressful situations.By
being reliable and consistent, you convince your child that you can be trusted.
Don't over schedule your child.Your children need rest to ease stress. When your children
are asked to meet schedules packed with activity, they may start to display the same anxiety
problems their parents do.Since your children don't have the same coping skills as you, they
experience much anxiety with little relief.40
A.Monitor your child's media use.
B.Restrict your child's use of electronic devices.
C.Your child's ability to deal with stress can reflect your success.

Dear Kevin,
I'm glad to hear that you want to learn a traditional Chinese art during your vacation.
Between paper-cutting and calligraphy,I strongly recommend Chinese calligraphy.
To begin with, calligraphy is not just writing-it is a way to cultivate inner peace and
patience. Each stroke requires focus and practice, which helps you relax and improve
concentration.Besides,by learning calligraphy, you will gain a deeper understanding of rich
Chinese culture.Compared with paper-cutting,calligraphy is an even more practical skill-you
can write beautiful Chinese characters for greetings or decoration.
I hope my suggestion is helpful to you.Whichever you choose,I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Without hesitation,I grabbed my umbrella and rushed out into the rain. When I finally caught

surprise.Looking into his tired eyes,I felt a strong sense of guilt."Leo,I'm sorry!"I blurted out,

judgment and how much I regretted my coldness over the past week. For a moment, there was
only the sound of rain splashing on the pavement.
We stood under the umbrella, the sound of the rain no longer feeling cold or lonely.Leo's
frozen expression slowly melted into a small, forgiving smile. He patted my shoulder and said
quietly,"I was wondering when you'd finally open that locker,my guy."We both burst into
laughter, the tension that had nearly ruined our friendship finally evaporating into thin air.I
realized that while the basketball spot was important, the trust we shared was the true victory. The
storm outside continued, but between us,the warmth of friendship had already returned.

many countries had done before. They didn't think it was important.
M:Absolutely. The United Nations has been trying to come to an agreement for nearly a
decade.(7)
2
W:Why did it take so long?(7)
M:Some countries had disagreements over fishing rights.(7)However,they have now
established limits on fishing and shipping areas. This helps reach the global goal of protecting
at least 30%of the world's oceans by 2030.
W:We should go and let our geography teacher know about this.Perhaps we can organize a
project to raise awareness about ocean conservation.
Text7(第8、9题为推断题)
M:Please follow me...As you can see, this house has plenty of room. This sitting room we're in
now is larger than average, and is an excellent place for you and your housemates to relax in.
W:How far is the University of Kentucky from here?
M:It's just a ten-minute walk. You follow the road and go through the park, and then you'll be
there.
W:There are five of us,so are there enough rooms?
M:Yes,there are four bedrooms on the first floor with one large bathroom.(10)Additionally,
there's an extra double bedroom on the top floor with its own small bathroom.(10)So,
there is plenty of space for everyone.
W:I like the view from the top bedroom!I think we'll all want that one.
M:Yes,it's definitely the best one. Now,let me show you the kitchen where you'll cook all your
meals.
Text8(第13题为推断题)
W:I'm a bit worried that no one will like my paintings.(11)(12)Do you think they'll sell?
(12)
M:It's hard to say. This is the first time they've been in a public sale like this. They could sell
for a few dollars,perhaps more,or perhaps not at all.(12)
W:Why is it so hard to tell?
M:Because no one knows you,and no one knows your artwork.Personally,I think your work is
fantastic and that you are incredibly talented. But talent alone is not always enough.
Sometimes you need more.
W:More of what?
M:Who knows? It's all down to personal taste.See that person who's just come through the
gallery? He might like bright, colorful pictures, like your paintings. He may even fall in love
with one of your pieces.
W:But he may prefer dark, moody paintings instead.
M:Exactly! And if that's the case,he may not like your work...Wait,he's showing an interest in
your seaside painting over there...He's asking the manager about the price.
W:So,he does love my work!
M:Ha!It certainly seems that way!
Text 9
W:Sam,you speak Spanish very well! When did you begin to learn it?
M:Well,I've spent a big part of the past ten years in Spanish-speaking countries, and I've been a
full-time resident of Ecuador for five years, but I didn't begin to really learn the language until
3
about four years ago.
W:So,why didn't you begin to learn the language earlier?
M:I thought I'd pick up the Spanish I needed as I went along. But after a few years of travelling
in Spanish-speaking countries such as Costa Rica and Nicaragua,I realized that to really master
the language,I actually have to start learning it.
W:So,how did you learn it?
M:Sometimes I bought some novels and watched children's programmes on TV.But I think the
six-month Spanish course is the most useful for me.After the course I could finally be able to
speak Spanish well.
W:So,what other foreign languages do you speak?
M:I studied French in high school and college. And I also learned German from my grandmother
when I was little. So,do you speak any foreign languages?
W:I'm learning Japanese now. It's a really difficult language.
M:Yeah.And I don't think I'll learn this language.So,why don't you learn Chinese?
W:I speak Chinese.I'm a Chinese.
