Don’t listen to people who say the young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories. Alice Hamilton, 17 I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific — I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It’ll be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time. Jason Moore, 18 This summer, I’m going to volunteer with Special House Programme. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses. Trish Anderson, 16 I’m going to teach kids who have trouble reading. I’ll work for a programme called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help kids choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me. 16.When will young people in the USA volunteer to help others? A.After class. B.On weekdays. C.Every afternoon. D.During holidays. 17.Who will help children read books? A.Alice Hamilton. B.Jason Moore. C.Trish Anderson. D.None of them. 18.Which is the best title for this passage? A.Reading for life B.A Special House Programme C.The Forest Center D.Young American Volunteers B Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. At first, she thought something had fallen from her recently renovated (翻新的) house. But as she walked to the front of the house, she saw a small crowd gathered on the sidewalk outside. As she walked towards the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a crashed motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his condition, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain. Helen had knowledge of first aid and had also taken a British Red Cross first aid course. She used her training to make a quick assessment (评估) of the situation. Then she ran back inside her home to get several thick towels to stop the bleeding. As Helen returned to the scene with the towels, someone from the crowd had called an ambulance, but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as well as I could to apply pressure to the wound until help arrived,” Helen recalled. Then she successfully managed to control the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived at the scene. Unluckily, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the simple but effective first aid skills Helen used, the result of this accident could have been far worse. “Knowing first aid gave me the confidence to look at the situation, to stay calm, and most importantly, to step forward to help in an emergency situation when others wouldn’t. I feel so happy that my first aid knowledge helped me save a stranger’s life,” Helen said. 19.Where did Helen see the boy? A.At a crossroads. B.Behind her garden. C.In front of her house. 20.Why did Helen dare to deal with the situation? A.She used to be a doctor. B.She had been trained to do that. C.She had dealt with this before. 21.Helen was quite _ when she gave the young man first aid. A.calm B.worried C.helpless 22.What does the author want to tell us through the story? A.One is never too old to learn. B.It is necessary to learn first aid. C.Giving sometimes produces nice results. C Jiang Danni is a 24-year-old volunteer from East China. She has volunteered in schools in Lebanon and countries in Africa. And her videos about her experience have drawn many people’s attention. After graduating (毕业) from university in 2020, Danni chose to work in Africa for a year and then journeyed to seven countries. A primary school in Uganda stopped her. She had a peaceful time getting to know the children at the school. She taught children in Grades One to Four. While staying at a school in Tanzania, she prepared lunch for 40 children below 5 years old. The school is so far from the town. Danni needed to pass through a large forest and fields before taking a bus for more than half an hour to get to the town. She went to the town to buy delicious food for the kids. In 2022, Danni arrived in Lebanon in Asia and became a volunteer teacher at a school. This time she taught arts and crafts to her students. She included some interesting activities in her teaching such as paper cutting and the making of paper ice cream in class. Her students all worked hard and enjoyed the creative activities. Every time Danni arrived at the school, they would run to give her a hug or small gifts such as a candy. And after school, they would invite her to their homes. “I enjoyed spending beautiful moments with them. Their smiling faces gave me energy and encouraged me to find meaning in volunteer work in different places,” Danni said. Even a plain thing can make a difference”,可推知此处表达“哪怕是简单的小事也能产生影响”,plain的含义和simple(简单的)一致。 30.文章开篇提出核心问题“But why do they do that?”,随后全文围绕这个问题分点介绍做志愿的原因,因此作者的写作目的是告诉人们做志愿活动的原因。 31.C 32.D 33.B 34.A 35.I love street concerts, because I love music and I can help others too./I like washing cars better, because it’s fun and we can work together.
