Do you love to read? TFK Kid Reporters do too! Gabri Blankson shared her reviews of The World Belonged to Us, one of the summer’s most interesting books. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading!
What is the book about?
A young girl from Brooklyn enjoys summer fun with her friends. The book is based on the writer’s life. As a girl, Woodson spent long days outdoors. She jumped rope in the street. Night and day, she and her friends had a good time.
How do the pictures add to the story?
They bring the story to life. They show all the fun the writer and her friends had in Brooklyn during the summer. Pictures are a great way for young readers to piece the story together. The pictures show that even boring things like old cans can be used and made into great toys, like water shooters.
▲
It’s a great book for children who love sharing summer memories.
How would you rate this book? Why?
I would rate this book a 9 out of 10. That’s because it’s harder for kids who don’t live in Brooklyn to relate (关联) to the story. Overall, though, the book is great. It tells readers that no matter the weather, the temperature, or the problem, summer fun can never be stopped.
16.What does the young girl in this book The World Belonged to Us like to do in summer?
A.To go travelling alone. B.To read books in the library.
C.To stay at home and watch TV. D.To stay outside and play with her friends.
17.How does the writer help younger readers piece the story together?
A.By comparing things. B.By using pictures.
C.By giving examples. D.By showing numbers.
18.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.Who would like this book? B.Where can you buy this book?
C.Why would kids dislike this book? D.What can you learn from the book?

Puff, a prairie dog (草原犬鼠), and Pip, a little rabbit, lived in a burrow (地洞) in the middle of a field. Even though the two were very different, they depended on each other. They were both satisfied in their burrowed home.
One morning, a horse passed by and asked them, “How can you live in this dry, dusty place? You should go out and see the world. You might find a better home.”
Suddenly, their home didn’t look as good as it had before. They started to notice all the bad things about it, so the two friends set off for something better.
Soon, they came to a great field. “This is a better home,” said Pip. “Look at all that grass!” As they walked into the field, they heard a strange sound. A big machine was moving to their direction. “This is not a better home!” Pip shouted. They rushed out of the field just in time.
They continued their search. Next they found a sandy hill. “This is a better home,” Pip said. “Easy digging for sure.” As Pip enjoyed the soft ground, they heard another strange sound. A giant eagle flew down on them from the sky. “This is not a better home!” Pip shouted. They hid in the bushes. As the eagle flew off, the two quickly left there.
Next they came to a watering hole. “This is a better home,” Pip said. “Much closer to water and food!” Puff’s eyes grew wide. “Yes!” As the friends took a drink of water, a thirsty cattle was running straight for them. “This is not a better home!” Pip shouted. They moved through the water, avoiding the heavy hoofs (蹄).
“It’s hard to find a better home,” Pip said. “Why did we ever leave the one we had?” Just then, a huge balloon came close and caught the two up in its rope. Blowing with the wind, they flew through the air and turned across the land, past the watering hole, the sandy hill and the great field.
Finally, the huge balloon stopped right on top of their burrow. “Maybe ours is good enough,” Pip said. “We can take a short walk now and then,” he added. “Just to see the world a bit.” Puff nodded. “But we can always come home,” said Pip. The two nestled (安卧) together inside their burrow.
“Just to see the world a bit,” Pip said as the wind blew the dirt over their home.

I often read books in my free time. Reading brings me both pleasure and knowledge. I enjoy exploring different worlds and ideas through books.
My favorite kinds of books are storybooks and science books. Storybooks take me on adventures with exciting characters, while science books teach me amazing facts about the world. For instance, I’ve discovered how volcanoes erupt!
I have a good habit of taking notes while reading to remember important points and sometimes I draw mind maps to understand difficult ideas better. This helps me enjoy the books more and learn better.
