It pushes us out of our comfort zones and forces us to face our own uniqueness.(虽然被理解总是令人渴望,但被误解也能促进个人成长和激发创造力。 和第四段“These emotions can serve as a driving force for personal growth.(这些情绪可以成为个人成长的驱动力。)”

Instead, it can motivate us to explore our perspectives and uncover new insights and creative solutions.(总之,误解不一定是挫折。
根据文章第二段中的“Participants ranked themselves on a 10-level “status ladder (地位等级)” comparing their position to society.(参与者在一个10级的“地位等级”上对自己进行排名,将自己的地位与社会地位进行比较。)”
As Mark Twain observed, ‘Comparison is the death of joy.’(然而,向上的比较往往会适得其反。
根据文章最后一段中的“Critically, economic growth sometimes fails to improve national happiness. Why? The study suggests unequal progress makes many feel left behind despite personal gains. True well-being requires advancing both personally and relatively within society’s position ladder.(重要的是,经济增长有时并不能提高国民幸福感。 以及“Lawmakers thus must balance wealth creation with fair competition policies.(因此,立法者必须在创造财富和公平竞争政策之间取得平衡。)”
根据文章的主要内容,特别是第一段中的“The key is ‘relative wealth’ — feeling richer than others brings more happiness than high income or education alone.(关键是“相对财富”——感觉比别人更富有比单纯的高收入或高教育带来更多的幸福感。)” D选项“The Hidden Power of Relative Wealth Comparison (相对财富比较的隐性力量)”概括文章主要内容,符合标题。

根据后文“because I’d never seen geese there before(因为我之前从未在那里见过大雁)”可知,作者之前从未见过大雁,因此这是一个“惊喜”。故选A项。
A. guests客人;B. puzzles谜语;C. pets宠物;D. friends朋友。根据前文“One autumn morning, I spotted a pair of wild geese on our pond.(在一个秋日的清晨,我看到我们的池塘里有一对野鹅。)”
根据前文“I hid behind some trees(我躲在了一些树后面)”以及后文“I was surprised to see they were staring at me, too!”
根据后文“the male had a damaged left wing and his faithful mate wouldn’t leave him behind(这只雄鸟的左翅膀受损了,而它那忠实的伴侣则不会抛弃它)”可知,雄鸟的左翅膀受伤了,这是它们在这里停留在此的原因。 故选A项。
根据后文“some movement from the corner of my eye(从眼角余光……
根据主语“Their wings”、空后“struggling for take-off”以及常识可知,大雁起飞时会拍打翅膀。
根据前文“Gradually they flew over the pond and circled back towards me as if to say goodbye.(渐渐地,它们飞过池塘,然后又朝我盘旋着飞回来,仿佛是在向我道别。)” “out of one’s sight”意为“看不见,离开某人的视线”。故选B项。
根据前文“The season’s first snowflakes fell the very next day.(第二天,这个季节的第一场雪花就飘落下来了。)”
故选A项。
结合语境可知,这里的“each other”指代“大雁彼此”,同时根据前文“the male had a damaged left wing and his faithful mate wouldn’t leave him behind(这只雄鸟的左翼受损了,而它那忠实的伴侣则不会抛弃它)”可推知,作者这里感慨雌雁对受伤雄雁不离不弃,这是忠诚与挚爱。故选D项

故填a。
One possible version:
Last week, our school held a fire drill to develop students’ awareness of fire safety and equip us with practical life-saving skills.
The drill started with a sudden alarm during the break. Following teachers’ clear instructions, we covered our mouths and noses with wet towels, bent down, and evacuated the building through the right exits in an orderly manner. In just a few minutes, all of us gathered safely on the playground, where teachers on duty carefully checked to ensure no one was left behind.
This meaningful drill not only taught me standard emergency procedures but also made me deeply realize the importance of calmness and teamwork in crises. I truly hope our school will organize more such practical activities to help us better protect ourselves when facing dangers.

67.But there were also challenges that year too. One of my classes was called “Europe Since 1870”. In the U.S., I would have expected an introductory history class, but in England, I was supposed to have already known the history. Now was the time to analyze it. That meant I not only had to learn the history as I went along but also had to try to write a paper explaining why certain events happened as they did. Despite this, I don’t regret anything about my time in London. Even through painful experiences, I learn to grow.
Sometimes the difficult times made me sad and homesick. But luckily, I met some classmates from all over the world, and these wonderful interactions with people watered down my negative feelings. I met dozens of interesting people from places like France, Greece and Germany, Palestine, and Australia. Learning how to make friends with people from different cultures and backgrounds is really fun. Moreover, interacting with these new friends helps me understand the countries they represent.

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need tobe confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

We have all experienced those moments when we desperately want to be understood. It’s human nature to seek connection, empathy and acceptance from those around us. Yet, in our pursuit (追求) of understanding, have we overlooked the surprising power of being misunderstood? A conversation with Marie-Catherine Mignault, a researcher in organizational behavior at Cornell University, uncovered an interesting perspective on emotional understanding.
Mignault’s study highlights the significance of emotional understanding in relationships. She emphasizes that feeling understood by someone is a powerful force that builds trust, connection and emotional support.
While feeling understood is always desired, being misunderstood can lead to personal growth and creativity. It pushes us out of our comfort zones and forces us to face our own uniqueness. Mignault’s research raises an interesting question: Could embracing this discomfort lead to personal transformation?
A study published in Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience highlights the various emotional responses that humans naturally feel in response to misunderstanding, including feelings of hurt, jealousy, loneliness, guilt, anxiety and sadness. These emotions can serve as a driving force for personal growth. Feeling hurt when our connections seem undervalued forces us to pause and reflect. It’s a chance for us to react in a better way, ensuring that our relationships are truly appreciated.
Jealousy can be a powerful force for self-improvement. It motivates us to protect and safeguard our relationships, ensuring they remain strong and secure.
Loneliness, while unsettling, acts as a driving force for social re-engagement. It’s a gentle push, reminding us to reach out to make new friends or reconnect with old ones. These connections, in turn, fuel our personal growth. Guilt and shame make us reflect on our actions, encouraging us to make amends (弥补错误) and maintain the connections we value.
Anxiety can act as a driver of personal improvement. It inspires us to make the best possible impressions and go the extra mile to be our finest selves.
Sadness can inspire us to act. It encourages us to regain control over our lives and give other emotions like joy and curiosity a fair chance.
In a word, misunderstanding doesn’t have to be a setback. Instead, it can motivate us to explore our perspectives and uncover new insights and creative solutions.
28. What is the real value of misunderstanding according to the text?
A. It continuously maintains relationships. B. It replaces emotional needs for protection.
C. It drives self-reflection and transformation.D. It saves us the trouble of meeting people.
29. According to the research, what function does guilt have?
A. It helps leave the best impression. B. It encourages defensive behavior.
C. It prevents individuals from being further hurt.
D. It enhances efforts to repair valued relationships.
30. How do people transform anxiety into a positive force?
A. By lowering social expectations. B. By motivating self-improvement.
C. By showing emotional expressions. D. By removing all sources of stress.
31. What can be concluded about misunderstanding according to the text?
A. It’s a feeling about bad relationships. B. It’s a way of destroying relationships.
C. It’s an opportunity for personal growth. D. It’s an access to social communication.
D
Recent research challenges decades of belief about money and happiness. While past studies claimed wealth weakly affects happiness in rich nations, new findings prove income comparison powerfully shapes joy. The key is “relative wealth” — feeling richer than others brings more happiness than high income or education alone.
Researchers analyzed 357 global surveys covering 2.3 million people. Participants ranked themselves on a 10-level “status ladder (地位等级)” comparing their position to society. Results revealed social comparison drives over 70% of money’s impact on happiness — far outweighing actual resources. “Money gains power when measured against others,” explains lead researcher Dr. Lee.
The researchers also found that the effect of social comparison was stronger in countries, such as Singapore. Resource competition forces constant social evaluation. Yet upward comparisons often backfire. As Mark Twain observed, “Comparison is the death of joy.” Having just a little more money than your parents doesn’t bring much satisfaction, because nowadays the neighbors are clearly much wealthier.
Critically, economic growth sometimes fails to improve national happiness. Why? The study suggests unequal progress makes many feel left behind despite personal gains. True well-being requires advancing both personally and relatively within society’s position ladder. Lawmakers thus must balance wealth creation with fair competition policies.
32. How does the study measure “relative wealth”?
A. By measuring education levels. B. By researching job satisfaction forms.
C. By analyzing spending habits. D. By using a 10-level status ladder.

A. Absolute Wealth: Real Path to Happiness
B. Why Money Fails to Buy Joy in Modern Society

We’ve all had that annoying experience; another driver cuts you off in traffic, and suddenly, you feel angry for the rest of your trip. A single event causes an emotional response in the brain, and it seems to last long. 36 A new study offers some clues by looking at how both mice and people react to a simple, annoying stimulus.
According to Dr. Karl Deisseroth, a psychiatrist at Stanford University, feeling angry at one thing, like a bad driver, can make you more likely to get angry at something else, like a noisy child. 37
They decided on a gentle puff (a small amount) of air to the eye. It’s certainly annoying, but not painful. They believed both humans and mice would react to it in a similar way. They were right. 38 After several puffs, both started to squint (眯眼) in a defensive, lasting reaction. The scientists then studied the brain activity linked to this experience. They discovered that the brain responds in two clear phases (阶段).
39 This is when the brain areas that handle sensory information — what we see, hear, and feel — become highly active for just an instant.
Right after, the second phase begins. In this phase, brain activity moves to other areas, including those linked to emotions. This phase is longer and more lasting, like a musical note that is held. 40 With each new puff of air, this lasting response became stronger. Dr. Deisseroth connects this directly to what emotion is: a lasting state that changes how we feel and act.
A.Both people and mice closed eyes when they felt the air puff.
B.Each new puff made this second part stronger.
C.But how does the brain identify this?
D.But how does this process happen inside our brains?
E.It’s this lasting brain activity that seems to create the ongoing emotional state.
F.The first phase is very quick, like a short, sharp musical note.
G.To understand this better, he and his team designed a lab experiment.

For more than 20 years I have been traveling the world, preferring often to spend a year or two in different countries rather than to just visit as a tourist. It has become an important part of my personality as I grew older and shaped the way I saw the world and myself.
My little taste of this amazing life was when I was 19 years old. I was selected among a small group of college classmates to spend a year abroad. This was long before people could travel the world through social media like Facebook and Twitter. In order to see a place, you had to go there and experienced it.
I was raised in a middle-class family and couldn’t afford to travel around the world the way I wished I could. The only way I knew about the world outside was through letters I wrote to pen pals from over a dozen countries as a kid, and from television. Growing up, I always loved the very funny British comedies that were shown on local public television every Saturday night. So when I got the chance to apply for a study abroad program, I chose London.
Living abroad can be exciting, scary and challenging. I thought it would be easier because I spoke the same language as the local people did. But I also like to relish (享受) the little differences between the British and American culture and language. I also learned that in England, they spell words differently than in the U. S. In British spelling, they put a “u” in words like favor to make it “favour” and an “s” in words like analyze to make it “analyse”. I was able to adapt quickly to this new way of writing since I was submitting papers all the time for my classes.
Academically, I got to take classes that weren’t offered at my college back home. For example, I had a course in sociology and learned about the native people of Papua New Guinea.
