As they were looking up at the ceiling, they saw that there were thousands of bats hanging there. They were so afraid that they started to quickly walk toward the other side of the room. They tried another way because they thought it was not safe to go back through the room with the bats.
However, as they walked on, they found they were lost. Becky started to cry wildly.
“Surely, your mother will see tonight that you haven’t come back,” Tom said. “She’ll send people out to look for you.”
Becky thought for a moment and then started to cry even harder. “Oh, Tom. She thinks that I’m sleeping at the Harpers tonight. She won’t find that I’m missing until late the next morning.”
“Alright, Becky. Let’s not cry. We should just keep walking. As long as we walk, there’s hope.”
So they walked with no idea where they were going. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle in order to save it. And so much of the time they walked in total darkness. Tom tried calling out for help several times but never got any answer in return.
Tom had some kite string (风筝线) in his pocket. He took it out and tied one end to a rock. Then he told Becky to sit and wait for him. Tom lit the candle again and made his way down one of the roads. He didn’t get far when the floor in front of him suddenly dropped fast into the black world below. He stretched (伸长) his arm to feel how deep the drop was. While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand. Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then appeared. It was the face of Injun Joe.

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia (栀子花) was sent to my house. No card or note came with it.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. My mother helped me to imagine. She’d ask me if I had been kind to someone else. Perhaps it was the neighbor I helped. Or maybe it was the old man across the street whose mail I picked up during the winter so he wouldn’t have to walk down the slippery (滑的) steps. As a teenager, though, I had more fun guessing that it might be a boy I liked.
One month before my high-school graduation, my father passed away. I was so grieved that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation, the senior-class play and the prom (舞会). But my mother didn’t want me to miss any of those things.
The day before the prom, I found a beautiful dress — in the right size—on the sofa. My mother wanted me to feel loved, believing that there was magic in the world and beauty in the face of hard times. Actually, my mother wanted me to be like the gardenia—lovely, strong and perfect.
My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 32. That was the year the gardenias stopped coming.
16. According to Paragraph 2, which word can best describe the author?
A. Smart and funny. B. Beautiful and lovely.
C. Friendly and helpful. D. Strong and independent.
17. What does the underlined word “grieved” probably mean?
A. Sad. B. Tired. C. Scared. D. Angry.
18. What did that beautiful prom dress mean to the author?
A. It represented her own courage. B. It represented her father’s memory.
C. It represented her dreams for the future. D. It represented her mother’s love and care.
19. Why didn’t the author get a gardenia after the age of 32?
A. She got married. B. The giver passed away.
C. The giver didn’t know her new address. D. Her husband didn’t like this kind of flower.
20. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. A Beautiful Dress B. The Secret of Gardenias
C. The Kindness of Strangers D. An Unforgettable Graduation
C 17. A 18. D 19. B 20. B
根据第二段中的“Perhaps it was the neighbor I helped. Or maybe it was the old man across the street whose mail I picked up during the winter so he wouldn’t have to walk down the slippery (滑的) steps.”
根据第三段中的“One month before my high-school graduation, my father passed away. I was so grieved that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation, the senior-class play and the prom (舞会).”
根据第四段中的“My mother wanted me to feel loved, believing that there was magic in the world and beauty in the face of hard times. Actually, my mother wanted me to be like the gardenia—lovely, strong and perfect.”
根据最后一段“My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 32. That was the year the gardenias stopped coming.”
C
We’ve all seen amazing photos of colorful vegetables and freshly-baked cakes in books and magazines. When we see these pictures, we believe that if we follow the recipe (食谱), we can make food that looks like that, too. People realize the tricks that photographers use to change a simple plate of food into the mouth-watering dish in the photo.
Food is one of the most difficult subjects for photographers: Hot food goes cold, cold food goes dry, and frozen food melts. But don’t worry, because food photographers have tools to deal with these problems. Besides the camera, a photographer’s bag also includes motor oil to make sauces look brighter, hairspray (发胶) to prevent cakes from looking dry, and a spoonful of shoe polish to help meat look cooked. They also use toothpicks to hold food in place for perfect photos.
There are a few rules that food photographers have to follow. If a photo is going to become part of an advertisement (广告), rules say the food which the company wants to advertise must be the real thing. However, any other food in the photo doesn’t need to be real. Plastic fruit or glass ice in a drink next to the real dessert is acceptable, according to the rules. Of course, there are some photographers who choose not to use non-food items in their photos; even when the rules allow it, but that does make their job much more challenging.
Whether a food photographer uses tricks or not, one thing is certainly true—food photography needs a lot of patience.

24. According to the passage, to be a good food photographer, you must be ________.
A. patient B. careful C. strict D. honest
25. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To remind people to follow the rules of food photography.

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to help your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night, but more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. ____26____. The result of this is not just a lot of tired people. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 car accidents and 1,500 deaths a year. Problems with sleep can also cause mental problems, as well as medical problems such as high blood pressure and heart problems.
American culture values work and often doesn’t value sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are often called “lazy”. ____27____. Students, especially college students, often sleep only a few hours a night. They often say, “I’m used to sleeping only a little.”
But according to experts, sleep is like money. If you sleep only five hours a day, you don’t “get used to it,” but instead, build up a “sleep deficit.” “It’s like a credit card (a card used to buy things or services),” says Dr. James Maas. “You are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back.” ____28____. For example, if you sleep four hours on Monday and then sleep eight hours on Tuesday, on Wednesday you will still have a “sleep deficit” of four hours. This deficit can continue for months or even years. People with a “sleep deficit” are sleep-deprived, driving and making decisions can be dangerous for these people.
Another research shows people should sleep nine or ten hours every night. ____29____. You didn’t do your homework last night? Maybe you can tell your teacher that you were working hard on your sleep deficit.
“Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the day. ____30____. You will be able to do more.” said Winston Churchill.
A. That’s a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination.
B. Many famous men say proudly, “I only have time to sleep four or five hours a night.”
C. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived
D. Sleeping during the day has a bad influence on your work.
E. The more hours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should sleep to “pay back” the hours on your “sleep credit card.”
F. More than half the people in the world may be running a “sleep deficit (不足)”.
C 27. B 28. E 29. F 30. A

根据文章第二段“American culture values work and often doesn’t value sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are often called ‘lazy’”,以及下文提到的学生睡得少,可知此处应举例说明这种文化现象。
根据文章第三段“You are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back.”
根据文章第四段“Maybe you can tell your teacher that you were working hard on your sleep deficit.”

pay attention to是固定搭配,意为“注意……”,其中to为介词,后接名词短语your requests。

根据“It is+形容词+to do sth.”,空处使用动词不定式to say,作真正的主语。

We sometimes say the lion is “the king of the jungle” because it’s stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. ① It can run faster than most animals and it can hunt the best. The lion is the highest animal in the land food chain. It can swim faster than most sea animals. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.
What is the top of the world food chain? People are. We are not the biggest or the fastest, but we are the cleverest. ② We could not run faster than most animals, so we invented cars. And now we can move the fastest. ③ We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.
People’s inventions are clever, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago, in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves. The wild wolves usually eat rabbits. But in recent years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming larger and larger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed by the rabbits.
Remember that we’re part of the food chain, so we’re in danger, too. If we protect animals, we’re protecting ourselves.
41. 填空
① It 指代的是:________

grass ③.
wolves ④.
people 45. ①.
Because we are the cleverest. ②.
We should protect animals.

本句为比较级句型,we“我们”,could not意为“不能够”,run faster than意为“比……跑得更快”,most animals意为“大多数动物”。故填:我们跑得不如大多数动物快。
【43题详解】
原句用so连接原因和结果,改写后用because引导原因状语从句,结构为“Because+原因,结果”,直接把原句前半句原因放Because后,句子时态和词汇保持不变,句意一致。
【44题详解】
①根据第一段“The lion is the highest animal in the land food chain.”及第三段“The wild wolves usually eat rabbits.”
①根据第二段“We are not the biggest or the fastest, but we are the cleverest.”
②根据第四段“If we protect animals, we're protecting ourselves.”

Biography of Artist: Frida Kahlo
When Frida Kahlo was a small child, she was very happy and ran and laughed all the time. When she was six years old, her life changed completely. She got a serious disease called polio and had to remain in bed for nine months. The disease made her left leg shorter than her right, so she had serious problems walking.
When Frida was 15, she was enrolled at a prestigious (有威望的) school in Mexico City. There she was influenced by the modern changes that were sweeping across Mexico. She cut her hair short like a boy and started riding a bicycle—shocking for a young woman of her time. She was very interested in science and decided to become a doctor.
Then, in September 1925, Frida had a terrible accident. Her right leg was broken in 11 places, and she had many other broken bones. For the rest of her life, she had pain every day caused by that accident. She had to give up her plans to become a doctor, because she knew she would never be strong enough. While lying in bed after the accident, Frida began reading books about art. Her father was a painter and photographer, and he encouraged her interest in art.
One year later, she completed her first painting: a portrait of herself. Over the years, Frida Kahlo painted more than 200 pictures. Most of them were about very personal subjects her health and her dreams. She also used many bright colors and symbols from Mexican culture:
