Peverel Smith, a legendary artist, was seen walking on a Manhattan sidewalk wearing jeans, high-tops, a blazer, and a wool cap. She was there to meet me at a gallery owned by her friends. We entered the quiet space, where a large horse statue was the only thing visible through the glass. Smith, who will turn 79 in December, was preparing for a busy fall. She was releasing her memoir (回忆录), Bread of Angels, and going on an international tour to celebrate her famous album Horses.
Spanning more than six decades, Smith’s career encompasses poetry, music, photography, and a myriad of other artistic endeavors. One of her most famous lyrics from Horses goes: “People say, ‘Beware,’ but I don’t care.” From her early childhood, she has consistently dared to challenge authority and break conventional boundaries. In her memoir, she recollects a question she posed during her school years regarding the future of art — a passion instilled in her by her art-loving father. Following the passing of her parents, Smith was sent to an orphanage, where she was deeply dismayed to discover that art had no place in the institution. It was at that moment that she resolved to dedicate her entire life to the pursuit of art.
Smith’s early life was difficult. She grew up in a poor family, moving often and being sick a lot. Despite this, she loved storytelling and reading. She dreamed of writing the longest book in the world. She also wanted to be a musician, even though she said she didn’t know how to play guitar properly. Her rebellious spirit made her stand out in the male-dominated music scene. She married Fredrick Smith in Detroit and had two children. After Fred’s death in 1994, she returned to New York with her kids and continued her creative work.
Smith’s life shows her ability to reinvent herself. She believes that everyone should find a piece of themselves in her stories. Smith plans to focus more on writing and less on memoirs. When asked how she feels, she said she feels like she is “ten and 100”.
24.What can we learn about Horses?
A.Smith will go on a celebration tour for Horses this December.
B.Horses holds lots of precious memories of Smith in her youth.
C.Horses represents Smith’s resistance nature as her early album.
D.Lyrics of Horses reflected nature of Smith since her childhood.
25.What is the main purpose of the 3rd paragraph?
A.To introduce the life story of Peverel Smith.
B.To present sympathy for Smith’s experiences.
C.To convey Smith’s resilience under hardship.
D.To explain origins of Smith’s literature talent.
26.The underlined part “ten and 100” in the last paragraph means _________.
A.Smith is excellent in health though advanced in years
B.Smith is now well-travelled and ready to author more
C.Smith is sensible about age when recalling her youth
D.Smith is passionate but sometimes feels overwhelmed
27.What is the best title of this passage?
A.Peverel Smith — My Ageless Friend B.Peverel Smith and Her Horses
C.Lifetime Reinvention of Peverel Smith D.Poetic Singer — Peverel Smith
C
Recent research has made significant progress in decoding human thoughts. By combining artificial intelligence (AI) with non-invasive brain scans, scientists have demonstrated methods to translate brain activity into sentences and to map out how language is formed in the brain. The ultimate goal of this work is to support the development of future brain-computer interfaces (接口) that could help individuals who have lost the ability to speak due to conditions like stroke (中风).
In one study, researchers used magnetoencephalography (脑磁图) to record participants’ brain activity while they mentally composed sentences. An AI model was trained to interpret these signals and reconstruct the text. It decoded individual letters with an accuracy of around 68%, showing higher success rates for more common letters. A key finding was the model’s error pattern: when it made a mistake, it frequently selected a letter that was next to the intended key on a keyboard. This suggests the model relies on interpreting motor signals in the brain related to typing movements.
A second study provided a clearer picture of the language production process. It revealed that the brain follows a clear sequence: it first generates a representation of a sentence’s overall meaning. Subsequently, this representation is broken down step by step into specific words, then syllables (音节), and finally into individual letters. These findings confirm that sentence formation follows a structured, top-down pathway.
Although similar implanted devices are already in use, this research points the way toward non-invasive, wearable alternatives. A present limitation noted by scientists is that the current technology is too sensitive. The MEG equipment requires a strictly controlled laboratory environment to function reliably, which hinders (阻碍) its immediate practical application in daily settings.
Nevertheless, the outlook is hopeful. Researchers indicate that with ongoing refinement of portable scanning technology and AI algorithms (算法), these challenges can be overcome. Such advancements hold the potential to create a valuable new communication tool for people with speech impairments.
28.What do the two studies aim to do?
A.Enhance traditional wearable devices.
B.Advance brain-scanning technologies.
C.Enable communication for brain-damaged people.
D.Improve current language learning methods.
29.What is a feature of the trained AI model?
A.It makes frequent errors in its decoding.
B.It uses brain signals to rebuild sentences.
C.Its accuracy varies with different letters.
D.It relies entirely on abstract language signals.
30.What is concluded about how the brain forms a sentence?
A.It is a whole-to-part structure.
B.It is a letter-to-word building structure.
C.It is a syllable-focused constructing structure.
D.It is a word-first random arranging structure.
31.What can be inferred about the technology from the last two paragraphs?
A.It allows immediate wider application.
B.It needs more work for practical use.
C.It is too sensitive for current devices.
D.It will soon replace implanted ones.
D
Why move to a city? And why leave? Urban centers today see this for many reasons — the economy, crowds, lifestyle considerations, air quality, and some odd diseases perhaps.
The earliest cities worldwide were born of country folk. Farmers were reliant on land-extensive economies, which encouraged them to live and spread out across the landscape in small settlements, to minimize the travel time and costs between their residences and farm plots.
Then as now, though, city living was more expensive in all the ways: greater chance of crowd diseases, more competition for resources, and rising levels of systemic inequality. And astonishingly, farmers still chose to bear these costs. What happened? That question has been the source of a long-standing debate, according to Douglas Kennett, who has conducted extensive research into urbanization in Classic Maya cities.
“We determined that the rise and expansion of Classic Maya cities resulted from the interaction of climate downturns, intergroup conflict, and the presence of strong economies of scale realized through capital investments in agricultural systems,” Kennett says. Using that same framework, Kennett and other researchers also determined that deurbanization set in “when the benefits of urban living no longer outweighed the costs, as environments were degraded (恶化) in cities and better climate improved the livability of rural areas where people would have more freedom and autonomy”.
Indeed, the team’s initial interest was centered on the role of climate change in the decline of Classic Maya cities. “We also capitalized on major developments in computational modeling,” Kennett says. “The biggest surprise for me was that the abandonment of cities occurred under improving climatic conditions. We have long thought that the decline of Classic Maya cities partially resulted from an extended period of drought. It turns out to be a much more complicated and interesting story.”
All told, the new work offers critical insights for understanding and managing contemporary and future urban evolution by establishing timeless, universal principles about how populations concentrate and spread out.
32.Why did early farmers live in small settlements?
A.To escape from disasters and diseases. B.To enjoy a comfortable urban lifestyle.
C.To boost the development of economies. D.To manage agricultural work efficiently.
33.What puzzle is presented about early city life in paragraph 3?
A.Farmers were forced to move into cities. B.Cities failed to offer proper accommodations.
C.Farmers willingly faced urban challenges. D.Rural life was more expensive than urban life.
34.What caused the decline of Classic Maya cities according to Kennett?
A.The long period of water shortage. B.The increased appeal of rural life.
C.The limitation to residents’ freedom. D.The collapse of agricultural systems.
35.What is the significance of the new research?
A.It clarifies Classic Maya cities’ history. B.It proves climate’s role in urban decline.
C.It offers general rules for urban evolution. D.It develops a computational modeling way.

“Hurry up, everyone! Don’t forget your lunches!” Mrs. Jones called out as Luna’s class could hardly contain their excitement for their class trip to the Grand Exhibition. “I’m going to take lots of pictures,” Mrs. Jones announced, holding up her camera. “We’ll make a wonderful class book about our day!”
On the bus, Luna could hardly sit still. When it finally stopped, she leaped up. “I want to be first!” she cried, accidentally pushing past Kevin in her rush. Inside the dimly lit exhibition hall, Mrs. Jones gathered the class for a group photo. “Everyone, stay to the right, please!” she reminded them. But in the darkness, Luna, still overexcited, tripped over someone’s foot. She lost her balance and fell forward, crashing right into Mrs. Jones.
Crash! The camera slipped from the teacher’s hands and hit the floor with a sickening sound. A heavy silence fell over the room. Mrs. Jones bent down and picked up the camera. “It’s broken,” Mrs. Jones sighed sadly. Luna’s heart sank. “I’ve ruined everything. Now we can’t make our class book,” she whispered, fighting back tears. Mrs. Jones gently patted her on the shoulder and said, “It’s okay. Don’t worry about that.”
Throughout the tour, while Kevin and others looked in wonder at the exhibits, Luna saw nothing. She was consumed by guilt. Even during lunch, the noisy chatter of her classmates couldn’t lift her spirits. “Please quiet down,” Mrs. Jones said with a tired voice. “After you eat, you may visit the gift shop. But remember, be back on the bus by 2:30.”
The next day at school, the children were asked to write about their trip. “Since we have no pictures,” Mrs. Jones said, trying to sound cheerful, “we’ll have to draw pictures for our class book.”
Luna looked at her blank paper, feeling sad. Then, she saw Kevin take something out of his bag — a handful of beautiful postcards from the gift shop. An idea flashed through her mind. “What if we use these?” Luna exclaimed, her voice suddenly bright. Kevin smiled and nodded.

根据第二段中“One of her most famous lyrics from Horses goes: “People say, ‘Beware,’ but I don’t care.” From her early childhood, she has consistently dared to challenge authority and break conventional boundaries. (《Horses》中最著名的一句歌词是:“人们说“小心”,但我不在乎。从小,她就一直敢于挑战权威,打破常规。”)” 可知,《Horses》的歌词反映了她从小就有的本性。故选D。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Smith’s early life was difficult.
根据最后一段“Smith’s life shows her ability to reinvent herself. She believes that everyone should find a piece of themselves in her stories. Smith plans to focus more on writing and less on memoirs. When asked how she feels, she said she feels like she is “ten and 100”. (Smith的一生,都在不断重塑自我。她希望人们能从她的故事中看到自己的影子。接下来,她打算深耕文学创作,减少回忆录的撰写。当被问及当下的心境时,她说,自己仿佛“ten and 100”。)”可知,Smith虽年事已高,但始终保持创作活力,且有新的创作规划。B选项“Smith is now well-travelled and ready to author more”中,ready to author more与她“将更多精力放在写作上”的创作计划相呼应,契合“ten and 100”所传递的“既有丰富人生阅历,又有旺盛创作热情”的内涵。故选B。
通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段中“Smith’s life shows her ability to reinvent herself. (Smith的一生,都在不断重塑自我。)”可知,本文主要介绍了传奇艺术家Peverel Smith的一生,她不断挑战自我,追求艺术,展现了自我重塑的能力,因此“Lifetime Reinvention of Peverel Smith (Peverel Smith的终身重塑)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选C。

根据第二段中“Farmers were reliant on land-extensive economies, which encouraged them to live and spread out across the landscape in small settlements, to minimize the travel time and costs between their residences and farm plots.(农民依赖的是大规模的土地经济模式,这种模式促使他们分散居住在广阔地域内的小型定居点,以减少居住地与农田之间的往返时间和成本)”可知,早期农民住在小型定居点是为了缩短住所与农田之间的出行时间、降低成本,本质是为了更高效地打理农活,故选D。
根据第三段中“Then as now, though, city living was more expensive in all the ways: greater chance of crowd diseases, more competition for resources, and rising levels of systemic inequality. And astonishingly, farmers still chose to bear these costs. What happened?(尽管如今的情况依旧如此,但城市生活在各个方面都更加昂贵:更容易传播群体性疾病、对资源的竞争更激烈、社会不平等程度也在不断上升。而令人惊讶的是,农民仍然选择承受这些代价。发生了什么?)”可知,城市生活成本更高、更容易爆发传染病、资源竞争更激烈、不平等问题更严重,但农民依然主动选择承担这些成本进入城市,故选C。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Using that same framework, Kennett and other researchers also determined that deurbanization set in “when the benefits of urban living no longer outweighed the costs, as environments were degraded (恶化) in cities and better climate improved the livability of rural areas where people would have more freedom and autonomy”.(基于同样的理论框架,Kennett和其他研究人员还确定,当“城市生活的益处不再超过其成本,因为城市环境恶化,而更好的气候改善了农村地区的宜居性(使人们能拥有更多的自由和自主权)”时,城市化进程就会逆转)”可知,玛雅城市衰落的原因是城市环境恶化,同时气候改善提升了农村的宜居性,农村能给人们更多自由自主权,也就是农村吸引力上升了。故选B。
根据最后一段“All told, the new work offers critical insights for understanding and managing contemporary and future urban evolution by establishing timeless, universal principles about how populations concentrate and spread out.(总的来说,这项新研究通过确立关于人口如何聚集和分散的永恒、普遍原则,为理解并管理当代及未来的城市发展提供了关键性的见解)”可知,这项新研究建立了关于人口聚集与分散的永恒普遍原则,为理解和处理当代、未来的城市发展提供了关键思路,对应C选项“为城市演化提供了通用规律”,故选C。

Last summer, my parents sent me to my grandfather’s farm. To a city boy like me, the idea was 41 . I imagined endless boredom, far from video games and friends. The reality was a 42 of early mornings and physical labor I had never known.
My grandfather handed me a pair of gloves on the first day. “We began with the fence,” he said. I 43 the task with my mind filled with complaints. The sun was 44 , and my muscles ached within hours. Blisters formed on my hands. I 45 wished to give up and go home.
The turning point came one afternoon. After repairing a long section, I stepped back and saw a straight, sturdy and 46 line where there had been disorder. A surprising sense of 47 washed over me. I had built that. For the first time, I looked at the work not as punishment, but as creation. My attitude began to 48 .
Weeks passed. I learned to care for the animals and 49 the vegetable patch. The work didn’t get easier, but I got 50 . I woke up without being called. The fatigue was still there, but it was now mixed with a strange satisfaction. I felt useful and capable.
prepare to do sth.
conduct a comparison between...and...

My Views on Fragmented Reading
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Version 1
My Views on Fragmented Reading
Nowadays, fragmented reading — scrolling through short videos or browsing brief articles — has become increasingly popular. In my opinion, this trend has both advantages and disadvantages.
On the positive side, fragmented reading saves time and allows us to acquire information quickly. With just a smartphone, we can access diverse knowledge anytime, anywhere. However, the drawbacks are equally obvious. Constant exposure to short, scattered content weakens our ability to focus and think deeply.
Personally, I believe fragmented reading should serve as a supplement, not a substitute, for traditional in-depth reading. While it satisfies our need for quick information, we should also reserve time for reading books that require sustained attention and reflection.Version 2
My Views on Fragmented Reading
Fragmented reading, characterized by scrolling through short videos and brief articles, dominates our daily lives. From my perspective, though convenient, this reading style does more harm than good.
Admittedly, fragmented reading offers efficiency. We can grasp news highlights or learn practical tips within minutes. Yet the problems cannot be ignored. Firstly, it fragments our attention span, making it increasingly difficult to concentrate on longer texts. Secondly, the information obtained is often shallow and disconnected, failing to build a systematic knowledge structure.
Therefore, my attitude is clear: while we may occasionally benefit from fragmented reading for quick updates, we should prioritize deep reading of complete works. Only by immersing ourselves in books can we truly develop critical thinking and gain profound insights. Let’s not sacrifice depth for speed.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
The idea spread quickly and quietly through the class.

The idea spread quickly and quietly through the class. Like a secret mission, students began digging into their backpacks. Soon, postcards of ancient vases and sparkling jewels covered Luna’s desk. “We can paste them into our class book and write down our thoughts!” Kevin suggested enthusiastically. Little by little, the scattered postcards came together like pieces of a puzzle. Everyone found their voices, sharing stories of what they had seen. When the last page was finished, they realized they had created something more alive than any photo — a book filled not just with images, but with hearts.
Luna carefully handed the book to Mrs. Jones. The teacher’s eyes widened as she turned the pages, reading each student’s handwritten memories beside the colorful postcards. Her voice thickened with emotion, “This is more beautiful than any camera could have captured.” She paused at Luna’s page, where Luna had written about the ancient pottery exhibit and drawn a beautiful flower. “You turned a mistake into something wonderful,” Mrs. Jones said, pulling Luna into a warm hug. That day, Luna learned that mistakes could be mended, not by fixing what was broken, but by creating something new together.
①粘贴:paste/stick/glue
②建议:suggest/propose
③修复:mend/restore/repair
①热情地:enthusiastically/passionately
②一个温暖的拥抱:a warm hug/a warm embrace
