New research studying 20 years of ocean information has found that our oceans have changed colour. This also means a great change in the ecosystems of the oceans that is likely caused by human activities.
For tens of years, satellites (卫星) have been watching the colour of Earth’s oceans and collecting information on the colour of light reflecting (反射) off the water. Especially one of the satellites, the Aqua satellite has recently completed 20 years of collecting high-quality global ocean-colour information. A new study has examined this information and found changes in ocean colour over the past 20 years that cannot be explained by natural, year-to-year variability (可变性) alone.
“I’ve been running models to study the ocean colour. The models have been telling me for years that these changes in ocean colour are going to happen,” said Stephanie Dutkiewicz, one of the study’s writers. “To actually see it happening for real is not surprising. But I am scared that these changes are probably caused by human activities.”
The ocean’s colour shows the life that lives in the water. Deep blue water usually has very little life. However, greener water means the presence of ecosystems, mainly plankton (浮游生物). Without plankton, many oceanic food webs would break down. This will greatly impact the sea life and humans who depend on fish for food.
“The colour of our oceans has changed,” said Dutkiewicz. “And we can’t say how. But we can say that changes in colour show changes in plankton communities. Plankton communities are the foundation (基础) of everything that feeds on plankton. So, we hope people take this seriously.”
Next up, Dutkiewicz will try to better understand the colour changes in different ocean areas, as well as looking into what might be causing them.
34.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The purpose of the study. B.The writers of the study.
C.The ways of the study. D.The good parts of the study.
35.What does the underlined word “impact” probably mean?
A.Make sth grow. B.Have an effect on.
C.Make sth polluted. D.Put sth in balance.
36.According to Paragraph 5, what is Dutkiewicz trying to do?
A.To call on people to care about oceans.
B.To point out the importance of oceanic food webs.
C.To tell that plankton is the foundation of everything.
D.To explain how the colour of our oceans has changed.
37.What may Dutkiewicz continue to study?
A.The ecosystems in different ocean areas.
B.The results of changes in ocean colour.
C.The plankton communities of different oceans.
D.The reasons for changes in ocean colour.
【答案】34.C 35.B 36.A 37.D

Making Changes
People and alpacas have lived in these mountains for hundreds of years. They have learned how to survive when it is very cold. But now, the winters are colder and longer than ever. 【
58.文章第一段提到“Way up in these mountains in Peru, there are some small villages. Just a few people live here. They live with their herds of alpacas.”,明确说明了养羊驼的人住在秘鲁的高山上(小村庄里),所以答案是原文直接信息。
59.第三段指出“Some people get very ill because they are living where it is always wet and cold.”,直接表明了山里一些人病得很重是因为他们居住的地方总是又湿又冷,这是原文中的具体表述,直接提取即可。
60.文章第四段提到“People living in the Ice Age had to change the way they lived. It was much colder than it had been. They learned how to make fire and their own tools. Some people moved to warmer places.”,明确给出了冰河时期人们改变生活方式的例子,如学会生火和制作自己的工具,一些人搬到更温暖的地方,任选两个作答即可。
61.第五段提到“As the Earth began to get warmer again, many of these animals became extinct. Some scientists think the animals were used to living in the cold and they couldn't change.”,说明因为这些动物习惯了生活在寒冷环境中,当地球再次变暖时它们无法改变,所以很多像剑齿虎和猛犸象这样的动物灭绝了,合理概括即可。

Facing the Future
A Cold Place to Live
Way up in these mountains in Peru, there are some small villages. Just a few people live here. They live with their herds of alpacas. The mountains are beautiful, but it is a very cold place to live. It is so cold that it is almost too hard for the people and their alpacas to survive.
Homes in the Mountains
The people live in small houses. The houses have thatched roofs. They are made for mountain living. However, rain, wind, and snowstorms can make a house crumble. A house that is falling down does not protect the people very well. Some families have to sleep on the wet, cold ground. They have to sleep like this night after night.
Too Cold
Some people get very ill because they are living where it is always wet and cold. Some illnesses are more common in places where it is wet and cold. It is very hard for older people and children to survive. Many people die each year. Many parts of the Earth are getting warmer. However, high up in these mountains, it seems to be getting colder. People have lived here for centuries. Soon, however, they might have to leave their mountain homes.
The Ice Age
Thousands of years ago, some places in the world were very, very cold. There were huge sheets of ice over the land. This was called the Ice Age. People living in the Ice Age had to change the way they lived. It was much colder than it had been. They learned how to make fire and their own tools. Some people moved to warmer places.
Changing Climates
In the Ice Age, there were many animals that don’t live today. There were Saber-toothed tigers (剑齿虎) and woolly mammoths. As the Earth began to get warmer again, many of these animals became extinct. Some scientists think the animals were used to living in the cold and they couldn’t change. Now it is getting colder in the mountains. The long, cold winters make it hard for the alpacas to get food.
Making Changes
People and alpacas have lived in these mountains for hundreds of years. They have learned how to survive when it is very cold. But now, the winters are colder and longer than ever. If the people want to keep living in the mountains, they will have to make changes. They will have to think about how they can help themselves and their alpacas survive.
58.Where do the people with herds of alpacas live?
59.Why do some people in the mountains get very ill?
60.How did people living in the Ice Age change their way of life? Give two examples from the passage.
