Short-Video Social Platforms: Good or Bad?
Short-video social platforms have gained popularity due to their engaging, easy-to-watch content and the opportunity they provide for creativity. Users can share their talents and connect with a wide audience.
However, these platforms have both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, they encourage creativity and social interaction. On the negative side, excessive use can lead to time wastage and mental health issues, especially among teenagers. Additionally, some content may be misleading or inappropriate.
In conclusion, while short-video platforms offer benefits, they should be used wisely to avoid their negative impacts.
读后续写:【答案】One possible version:
Having heard my story, he expressed his support for my final decision and told me something surprising. “Boy, you have made the right choice to go back home,” he said. “To be frank, my son ran away from home two years ago. I have been missing him every hour and every minute.” Now it’s time for me to comfort him, “Don’t worry. I believe he will come back soon, just like me.” I expressed my thanks for his kindness of having me in his car and I wished his son good luck. After all, we are all good people and good people deserve good fortune.
Finally, I arrived home when it was completely dark. Nervous and uneasy, I approached the door and knocked on it gently. It was my father who opened the door and my sudden appearance made him go wild with joy. “Son, you’ve finally come back. I’ve been waiting for this moment for long,” said my father in a trembling voice. It was at that moment that I realized there is no place like home and that blood is thicker than water.

Text 1
W: It’s funny how different animals move in different ways. For example, birds fly, horses run, fishes swim.
M: I think among all the animals, ducks are the most interesting ones because they can fly, walk and swim.
Text 2
M: Shall we play basketball tonight? Some of my friends will also head for the stadium after finishing their homework in the library.
W: Sure, I had intended to go to the cafe with Catherine, but she was called away by Mr. Wilson.
Text 3
M: I’m a bit fed up with egg rolls for breakfast every morning, but I do like the protein they supply.
W: I sometimes have boiled eggs because they’re healthier than fried ones.
M: Good idea. I’ll try that tomorrow morning.
W: The new towels you bought yesterday may not be as comfortable as cotton ones, but they are better at getting the skin dry.
M: Exactly. That’s what they’re for. Plus, they’re a lot cheaper.
Text 5
W: ChatGPT is awesome. It’s an advanced chat program. It sounds like you’re talking to a real human.
M: Like an artificial intelligence robot in a science fiction movie.
W: Exactly. Hundreds of millions of people are using it. Let’s ask it a question.
Text 6(第7题为推断题)
M: Why is Max looking at you with his eyes like that? He looks sad.
W: It’s not because he’s sad. He feels sorry because he’s been behaving badly. When I went downstairs this morning, I found the fridge door open and the food all over the floor.
M: What happened?
W: Max managed to open it and then made a big mess.
M: ⑥How do you know it was Max who did it?
W: ⑥I saw him lying in the middle of the kitchen and happily eating the beef I’d prepared for today’s lunch. I had to give up walking him this morning and went back to the market.
Text 7
M: ⑧The cost of gas is increasing all the time. I’m a bit worried about the cold weather in the next few months. ⑧⑨If we heat the house throughout the winter, we will spend too much money.
W: A better way to save money might be to use a greener energy source.
M: What do you mean?
W: I mean, instead of using gas or coal, why don’t we try solar power? Although it will be costly to get the solar equipment set up, it will be worth it in the long run. And it’s environmentally friendly.
M: Good idea, but it’s quite dark during winter, so the equipment won’t transform much sunlight
into energy.
W: That’s a good point. ⑨How about using the wind?
M: ⑨That’s great. We’ll end up having more energy with the winter storms here.
Text 8
W: This study is taking me forever. ⑩I have to compare the poems from different cultures. It is really difficult because they are all in different languages!
M: Yes, I can imagine that this would be pretty hard! Which poets are you studying?
W: Xu Zhimo from China, T. S. Eliot from America, and Kahlil Gibran from Lebanon in the Middle East.
M: Why do you choose those poets? Are they your favorite ones?
W: Not really, but I do like them. They all wrote poetry around the same time, which is really interesting.
M: Well, how much time have you got?
W: ⑪My professor wants it by next Monday, which is the day after tomorrow. So, I don’t have much time!
M: Tell you what, dear, you get on with your work and I’ll make you some nice hot coffee.
W: Oh, you’re the best. ⑫That’s why Mom married you!
Text 9
W: This place is really far away, but the scenery is so beautiful here. Shall we park the motor home now? It’s getting dark.
M: Sure, how about stopping the vehicle over there?
W: Yes, perfect. That’s much more convenient than putting up a tent when we went camping in the woods in the spring of this year.
M: True. ⑬we can park here, right on the beach.
W: Oh yes. ⑭I filled the vehicle up with fresh water in the morning so we can have a shower if necessary.
M: Great, there we go. Let’s get out and have a look around.
W: ⑮Wow, the scenery is amazing here in Scotland. Look at the sunset above the sea and the snowy mountain behind us. Let me take a picture.
M: ⑮The bad thing is that it’s not summer now, but we’re so lucky to spend the cold night in the warm motor home and we can have a good view of everything from there.
W: Anyway, let’s get back inside and I’ll turn the heat on. ⑯Would you please go and check if there is enough gas to cook our dinner?
M: ⑯Sure.

M: ⑰Welcome back to the show. This is Andrew, and now let’s have a look at the books that are coming out this month. October is the month of autumn and Halloween, so as you would expect, there are a few horror novels hitting bookstores soon. ⑱The first book is The Dark, which comes out on October 10th and there is only one week before that. It includes 13 short stories written by journalist Lee Ryan. What’s more, it is hoped that this book will be turned into a movie series. Next we have Stone Cold. This is the first novel by Japanese writer Ichiro Fujino that has been translated into English. It will be published on October 17th. His writing is really excellent and I can’t wait for more of his works to be translated. ⑲Lastly, we have them all from American writer John Clark. It tells about a newly opened library in Australia where people start going missing. I don’t want to say any more or I’ll ruin the surprise. ⑳You can learn more about these books on our show’s website. That’s all from me. Have a great October.

第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Australian Pine
A perfect “living decoration” to add in your house, it is good to look at and has a comforting feel. It can also serve as the perfect Christmas tree. It grows around 10 feet tall indoors. Remember that it requires plenty of light and fresh air. Otherwise, it becomes weak and an easy target for mites (螨虫).
Dracaena
The green and yellow pattern on its leaves looks great. It can grow to be around 10 feet tall. Just make sure you keep the soil surface dry between your watering periods because it gets influenced by too much water. Also, having this plant around a dog can be dangerous. It can be poisonous to dogs if they eat it.
Grape Ivy
If you want something off the ceiling (天花板), this houseplant is the one for you. It’s a climbing plant, and it will make for a beautiful hanging basket decoration. The plant is full of life wherever it is hung. It needs to be kept wet in all its parts for good growth.
Peperomia
It is little in size, with long leaves. It adds energy to your living room and creates a comforting environment. As it’s not a very tall plant, you needn’t worry about how much space it will take up. The plant likes a dry surface of the soil.
A houseplant is pretty to look at and brings fresh air to your home. Besides, looking after a plant will give you something more to do and care about. Let’s look at the four best houseplants you can grow.
So what are you waiting for? Choose the one that attracts you most, and give your home a wonderful addition.
21. Which of the following can serve as a Christmas tree?
A. Grape ivy. B. Dracaena. C. Australian pine. D. Peperomia.
22. When keeping Dracaena as a houseplant, you should ______.
A. be careful with mites B. keep dogs away from it
C. hang it from the ceiling D. leave the surface of the soil wet
23. In which section of a website can you most likely find the passage?
A. Business. B. Life. C. Travel. D. Politics.

About once a week, a veterinarian (兽医) Kwane Stewart heads down to San Diego’s East Village to make his rounds, serving the dogs, cats and birds who are the treasured pets of downtown’s homeless community.
Stewart’s parents were huge animal lovers. By age 6, he knew he wanted to be a vet. After graduation from a Colorado veterinary science program, he spent the next decade as a veterinarian. In 2008, he worked as head veterinarian at a country-run animal shelter in an area struck by the Great Recession. He saw pets abandoned and the work was extremely depressing. Four years into the shelter job, Stewart said he was burned out with guilt and ready to quit.
Then one morning on his way to work, he saw a homeless man and a dog. He treated the dog’s skin condition and the animal was transformed. The owner was beyond grateful and said, “Thanks for not ignoring me and for treating my dog.” “That was the moment for me. I got back to saving animals and doing it on my own terms,” Stewart said.
A few weeks later he set up a pop-up veterinary clinic at a soup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new job as “Street Vet” began. In addition to treating common diseases, Stewart often provides vaccinations (接种疫苗) and general wellness checks. He also promotes “fear-free” pet care. Many of the people Stewart serves are not just grateful for the help but also form a deep bond with him, seeing him as someone who not only treats their pets but also acknowledges their humanity.
“I can dream a little bit that people from all over the world will want to emulate what I do.” Stewart said. Right now, he is building a network of trusted volunteers, technicians with hospitals and clinics. “These are all people who just reached out and said, ‘I’m inspired by what you do. How do I do it?’” he said.
24. What do we know about Steward’s current job?
A. He runs an animal shelter.
B. He adopts abandoned pets.
C. He works for a science program.
D. He attends to homeless people’s pets.
25. Why is Stewart’s shelter job mentioned?
A. To explain his change of career focus.
B. To illustrate his professional competence.
C. To explore the future of the industry.
D. To reflect the challenges of the profession.
26. What do many people think of Steward?
A. He’s odd. B. He’s frank. C. He’s merciful. D. He’s humble.
27. What does the underlined word “emulate” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Follow the example of. B. Show respect for.
C. Put the blame on. D. Pay attention to.
C
For many of us, our closest meeting with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of amazing creatures. It’s an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for the animals? A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later, live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in zoos — animal protection was not a priority. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for animals, making bigger enclosures (围场), removing bars, and, to some extent, copying their natural habitats.
Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals and using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are here to help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public. Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection programmes.
Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect species that are under threat in the wild due to global warming. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Protection at Salford University says: “We wouldn’t have a lot of different species today if it wasn’t for zoos.” Some zoos have breeding (繁殖) programmes which help to preserve the future of species. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its protection work. It brought a rare fish species back from the dead after breeding and releasing a school of golden fish back into their native river.
While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: “Taking a walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon.”
28. What can be inferred from paragraph one?
A. The conditions for animals are improving.
B. People used to kill animals for entertainment.
C. Museums have led to the popularity of wildlife.
D. Animal protection has always been the biggest concern.
29. The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 is mentioned to ______.
A. prove it is cruel to keep animals in zoos
B. show zoos are making efforts to protect wildlife
C. question whether it is useful to educate the public
D. express not all the zoos are well managed
30. Why are some species in danger according to paragraph 3?
A. Because of little resources. B. Because of heavy pollution.
C. Because of climate variation. D. Because of illegal hunting.
31. What is Jon Coe’s attitude towards meeting wildlife in the future?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Unknown. D. Hopeful.
D
Floods are among the most deadly and damaging disasters worldwide. Many smaller communities, especially those that have never experienced floods before, lack the tools they need to detect (监测) and manage the disaster, leaving them struggling to face the full force of flooding.
To help protect these communities, the National Space Agency (NSA) has partnered with several leading scientific groups to develop a new flood detection tool called “Model of Models” (MoM). This tool combines data from open-source hydrological (水文的) models with Earth observing satellite data to produce global flood risk level updates several times a day. When the MoM detects a high probability of flooding in an area, it sends a flood early warning to affected communities, letting them quickly take the necessary steps to save lives and belongings.
“This new technology covers the face of the globe, enabling us to observe flood risk and predict the chance of floods in ways never before possible,” said Dr. Shan Clain, manager for NSA’s Earth Science Applied Sciences Program. “The technology we’ve developed will make a huge difference, enabling early action by communities around the globe — especially small island communities and developing countries that lack the necessary early warning information to protect themselves and their loved ones during flood events.” MoM will be a game changer.
Until now, full global flood early warnings have not been possible, either due to limitations in hydrologic monitoring networks, prediction models, or the professional knowledge to operate and widely share their results, especially in small and underdeveloped countries.
Oma Sam, a director at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said: “Effective early warning information is shown to save lives. However, traditional flood early warning has so far been expensive and requires local funding, resources, knowledge as well as regular care. I am looking forward to helping NSA provide this powerful MoM to all communities so that early warnings can reach the last mile.”
32. What can we learn about MoM from paragraph 2?
A. It sends early warnings several times a day.
B. It frequently updates global flood risk levels.
C. It is specially for flood-affected communities.
D. It relies on human observation to detect floods.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about MoM?
A. Its operational steps. B. Its development history.
C. Its value and effect. D. Its technology progress.
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Early warning information is enough to save lives.
B. MoM has been provided to all the communities now.
C. MoM is well-received in small developing countries.
D. MoM is expected to beat some past system limitations.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. MoM: A Breakthrough in Global Flood Early Warning.
B. NSA: A Partner of Small Communities in Flood Rescue.
C. MoM Saves Small Communities From Flood Disasters.
D. NSA Leads the Improvement of Flood Detection Tools.

How to Communicate Effectively in Group Projects
Effective communication is the key to successful group projects. 36 Without clear communication, misunderstandings and conflicts can easily arise.
First, establish clear goals and roles. 37 For example, one member can be responsible for research, another for writing, and another for presentation. This ensures that everyone knows their responsibilities and works towards the same goal.
Second, listen actively. 38 When someone is speaking, give them your full attention, ask questions, and provide feedback. This shows respect and helps you understand their ideas better.
Third, use appropriate language. Avoid using technical terms that others may not understand. 39 For instance, instead of saying “This is a flawed approach,” you could say “I see your point, but maybe we can try a different method.”
Finally, resolve conflicts constructively. Disagreements are natural in group work. 40 Focus on finding solutions rather than blaming others. This helps maintain a positive team atmosphere.
A. It’s important to express your opinions clearly and politely.
B. You should always agree with others to avoid arguments.
C. Make sure everyone agrees on the project’s objectives and individual tasks.
D. Effective communication can prevent many problems in group work.
E. Try to understand others’ perspectives before making judgments.
F. They shouldn’t be avoided- they should be managed with respect.
G. Communication skills are useful for people in leadership roles.

The Ripple of Kindness
One evening, I was rushing to catch the last bus home when I noticed an elderly woman 41 on the sidewalk. Her cane had slipped, and she was struggling to 42 it. Without thinking, I ran over and helped her up. She smiled warmly and said, “Thank you, dear. You’ve saved me from a fall.”

Over the next few weeks, I began to notice something 47 . Every time I helped her, she would later be seen helping someone else — a child struggling with homework, a young mother carrying a baby, or a lost tourist. It was as if her kindness was 48 like ripples in a pond.
One day, I finally asked her, “Why do you keep helping others?” She looked at me with a gentle smile and said, “Because I once received kindness when I needed it most. Now, I just want to 49 it forward.”
Her words stayed with me. I realized that kindness wasn’t just about grand gestures; it was about the small, everyday actions that could 50 someone’s day.
Inspired by her example, I started doing more for others. I began volunteering at a community center, 51 meals for the elderly, and even helping classmates with their homework.
To my surprise, the more I gave, the more I received. My classmates became more 52 , the elderly I helped sent me thank-you notes, and even my teachers noticed the change in my attitude.
One afternoon, the elderly woman handed me a small, hand-written note. It read: “Your kindness has created a ripple. Keep it going.”
I smiled, knowing that even the smallest act of kindness could 53 a chain reaction.
Today, I still see her helping others, and I continue to do the same. We may never know the full 54 of our actions, but one thing is certain — kindness has a way of 55 to us, often in the most unexpected ways.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had run away from home after finishing high school. My parents had insisted I go to college, but I was tired of school. I hated it. I was determined not to go. And, besides, my father was too strict. I had too many chores to do around the farm. I hated the work!
There had been a quarrel between my father and me. I threw some things into a bag and left angrily, as my father shouted after me, “If you leave, don’t come back!” My mother cried openly, and I had seen those tears during a hundred sleepless nights.
Then it was time to write a letter to my father.
Dear Dad,
It’s been more than a year now. I’ve traveled east to west. I’ve had dozens of jobs. None of them amounted to very much. Always the same questions: “How much education have you got?” It seems they always want college men for the good jobs.
Dad, you and Mother were right about everything. I know now that the work on the farm didn’t hurt me, and I’m convinced I need college. I’m also convinced that both of you loved me.
Dad, I’ve learned a lesson. I want to come home. I know you said if I left, I couldn’t come back, but I’m praying you’ll change your mind. I want to come home and be a part of the family again.
Give my love to Mother and the girls.
Love,
Your son
As I folded the letter and put it into an envelope, I felt a refreshing relief. It was as if a heavy load had been lifted from my shoulders. And I had to be on my way home.
I started down the desolate road — the long road home. Fortunately, a car picked me up, and it was good to have someone to talk with. The driver was a salesman and very pleasant.
“Where you going, boy?” he asked good-naturedly.
There was a long silence before I said, “Home.”
“Been away from home long?”
I smiled, a little self-conscious, and said, “One year, one month and two days.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Having heard my story, he expressed his support for my final decision and told me something surprising.
