Four years into the shelter job,Stewart said he was burned out with guilt and ready to quit. Then one morning on his way to work,he saw a homeless man and a dog.He treated the dog's skin condition and the animal was transformed. The owner was beyond grateful and said,"Thanks for not ignoring me and for treating my dog.""That was the moment for me.I got back to saving animals and doing it on my own terms."Stewart said. A few weeks later he set up a pop-up veterinary clinic at a soup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new job as "Street Vet"began. In addition to treating common diseases,.Stewart often provides vaccinations(接种投苗)and general wellness checks. He also promotes "fear-free"pet care. Many of the people Stewart serves are not just grateful for the help but also form a deep bond with him, seeing him as someone who not only treats their pets but also acknowledges their humanity. "I can dream a little bit that people from all over the world will want to emulate what I do."Stewart said.Right now;he is building a network of trusted volunteers, technicians with hospitals and clinics."These are all people who just reached out and said,I'm inspired by what you do.How do I do it?""he said. 24.What do we know about Steward's current job? C For many of us,our closest meeting with wild animals is at a zoo. These places allow us to observe the behaviours and characteristics of amazing creatures. It's an enjoyable and educational experience for us,but is it the best environment for the animals?A long time ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum.Later, live animals were caught by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in zoos-animal protection was not a priority. But modern zoos and wildlife parks have transformed the conditions and environments for animals, making bigger enclosures ()removing bars, and,to some extent, copying their natural habitats. Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals and using them just for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show they are here to help wildlife by educating us about protection. In the UK,the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public.Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection programmes. Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help to protect species that are under threat in the wild due to global warming.Robert Young,Chair in Wildlife Protection at Salford University says:"We wouldn't have a lot of different species today if it wasn't for zoos."Some zoos have breeding (programmes which help to preserve the future of species.Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the UK for its protection work.It brought a rare fish species back from the dead after breeding and releasing a school of golden fish back into their native river. While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, such as using virtual reality, and Jon Coe,a zoo designer, told the BBC:"Taking a walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti,I think,is going to be possible pretty soon." 28.What can be inferred from paragraph one? A.The conditions for animals are improving. B.People used to kill animals for entertainment. C.Museums have led to the popularity of wildlife. D.Animal protection has always been the biggest concern. 29.The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 is mentioned to A.prove it is cruel to keep animals in zoos B.show zoos are making efforts to protect wildlife C.question whether it is useful to educate the public D.express not all the zoos are well managed 30.Why are some species in danger according to paragraph 3? A.Doubtful.B.Worried.C.Unknown.D.Hopeful. D Floods are among the most deadly and damaging disasters worldwide. Many smaller communities, especially those that have never experienced floods before, lack the tools they need to detect()and manage the disaster, leaving them struggling to face the full force of flooding. To help protect these communities, the National Space Agency NSA)has partnered with several leading scientific groups to develop a new flood detection tool called "Model of Models" (MoM).This tool combines data from open source hydrological (K)models with Earth observing satellite data to produce global flood risk level updates several times a day. When the MoM detects a high probability of flooding in an area,it sends a flood early warning to affected communities, letting them quickly take the necessary steps to save lives and belongings. "This new technology covers the face of the globe, enabling us to observe flood risk and predict the chance of floods in ways never before possible,"said Dr.Shan Clain, manager for NSA's Earth Science Applied Sciences Program."The technology we've developed will make a huge difference, enabling early action by communities around the globe-especially small island communities and developing countries that lack the necessary early warning information to protect themselves and their loved ones during flood events."MoM will be a game changer. Until now, full global flood early warnings have not been possible, either due to limitations in hydrologic monitoring networks, prediction models,or the professional knowledge to operate and widely share their results, especially in small and underdeveloped countries. Oma Sam,a director at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Socleties, said:"Effective early warning information is shown to save lives. However, traditional flood early warning has so far been expensive and requires local funding, resources, knowledge as well as regular care.I am looking forward to helping NSA provide this powerful MoM to all communities so that early warnings can reach the last mile. 32.What can we learn about MoM from paragraph 2? A.It sends early warnings several times a day. B.It frequently updates global flood risk levels. C.It is specially for flood-affected communities. D.It relies on human observation to detect floods. 33.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about MoM? A.Its operational steps.B.Its development history. C.Its value and effect.D.Its technology progress. 34.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A.Early warning information is enough to save lives. B.MoM has been provided to all the communities now. C.MoM is well-received in small developing countries. D.MoM is expected to beat some past system limitations. 35.What is the best title for the passage? A.MoM:A Breakthrough in Global Flood Early Warning. B.NSA:A Partner of Small Communities in Flood Rescue. C.MoM Saves Small Communities From Flood Disasters. D.NSA Leads the Improvement of Flood Detection Tools. 第二节共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Communicate Effectively in Group Projects Effective communication is the key to successful group projects.36. Then it was time to write a letter to my father. Dear Dad, It's been more than a year now.I've traveled east to west.I've had dozens of jobs.None of them amounted to very much.Always the same questions:"How much education have you got?"It seems they always want college men for the good jobs. Dad,I've learned a lesson.I want to come home.I know you said if I left,I couldn't come back, but I'm praying you'll change your mind.I want to come home and be a part of the family again. Give my love to Mother and the girls. Love, Your son As I folded the letter and put it into an envelope,I felt a refreshing relief. It was as if a heavy load had been lifted from my shoulders. And I had to be on my way home. I started down the desolate road-the long road home.Fortunately,a car picked me up,and it was good to have someone to talk with. The driver was a salesman and very pleasant. "Where you going, boy?"he asked good-naturedly. There was a long silence before I said,"Home." “Been away from home long?” I smiled,a little self-conscious,and said,"One year, one month and two days." 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右: 2。请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Having heard my story,he expressed his support for my final decision and told me something surprising. W:Anyway, let's get back inside and I'll turn the heat on.1Would you please go and check if there is enough gas to cook our dinner? M:⑥Sure. Text 10 M:DWelcome back to the show. This is Andrew, and now let's have a look at the books that are coming out this month.October is the month of autumn and Halloween,so as you would expect, there are a few horror novels hitting bookstores soon.1 The first book is The Dark, which comes out on October 10th and there is only one week before that.It includes 13 short stories written by journalist Lee Ryan. What's more,it is hoped that this book will be turned into a movie series.Next we have Stone Cold. This is the first novel by Japanese writer Ichiro Fujino that has been translated into English. It will be published on October 17th.His writing is really excellent and I can't wait for more of his works to be translated.19Lastly,we have them all from American writer John Clark. It tells about a newly opened library in Australia where people start going missing.I don't want to say any more or I'll ruin the surprise.2You can learn more about these books on our show's website. That's all from me.Have a great October.
