Text 1 W: Did you go to the modern art exhibition downtown? M: Yeah. I couldn’t make sense of half of it. W: Maybe that’s the point—to make you think. Text 2 M: Why do you like Robert Frost so much? W: His poems look simple, but each line teaches you something about life. Text 3 M: I’ve joined the beach cleanup this weekend. W: That’s great. I’m in a recycling program at school. M: Every small action helps reduce pollution. Text 4 W: Look at that iceberg! It’s like a floating castle. M: Stay on the deck. The water is freezing. Text 5 M: I can’t understand this poem at all. W: Try reading it out loud. Sometimes hearing it helps. Text 6 W: I’ve been practicing Chinese calligraphy for two years now. M: Really? How often do you practice? W: I try to do it every day. It’s very relaxing. M: That’s impressive. I can barely hold a brush straight. Text 7 M: Did you read the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” for class? W: Yes. It seems simple but there’s so much beneath the surface. M: I don’t get it. Why would anyone stop in the woods when it’s snowing? W: That’s the mystery. Maybe he’s escaping from life’s pressures. M: Hmm… I guess we should read it again. W: Let’s analyze the rhyme scheme together. Text 8 W: I heard you went to Antarctica last year. What was it like? M: Unforgettable. I was there to collect ice samples for climate research. W: What was the hardest part? M: Definitely the isolation. You’re surrounded by endless white, no one for miles. W: Did you ever feel like giving up? M: A few times. But seeing the aurora made it worth it. W: How did you feel when you got back? M: So grateful for hot showers and fresh vegetables. You never appreciate them until they’re gone. Text 9 M: Have you heard about the “Green Wave” project? W: Not yet. What is it? M: It’s a tree-planting competition among schools. W: How many schools are taking part? M: Twelve so far, including ours. W: What’s the prize? M: A trophy and a feature in the local newspaper. W: When do we need to sign up? M: Registration closes this Friday. Text 10 W: Good evening, everyone. I’m not a professional explorer, but I’ve spent the last 15 years studying the journals of polar adventurers. Tonight, I want to share what I’ve learned about the true value of exploration. Many people think exploration is about conquering mountains or reaching the South Pole first. But after reading hundreds of diaries, I’ve found that the greatest discovery is not a new land—it’s a new understanding of oneself. When you’re alone in the ice, with no one to rely on but yourself, you face your deepest fears and limitations. That’s when you learn what you’re truly made of. Exploration is not a race; it’s a conversation with the unknown. And the unknown is not just out there—it’s also inside you. So my advice is: you don’t have to go to Antarctica to be an explorer. Every time you try something that scares you, every time you step out of your comfort zone, you are exploring. And that’s where growth happens. Raven Winter The Lost Whale Meg and Merlin: Making Friends The Adventure Club: Tiger in Trouble四本书的作者、故事梗概及特色,旨在激发读者的阅读兴趣。 21. The event aimed to foster cultural appreciation and inspire students through the art of verse. The contest showed the talents of our fellow students. Each participant skillfully conveyed the essence of the poems through their performances. This event highlighted the literary skill of our classmates and allowed us to explore the richness of different languages. It served as a reminder that poetry is a universal language, crossing cultural boundaries and connecting us through shared emotions and experiences. One possible version: So I made my way to the library the next day and looked for some books. Honestly, I didn’t know the difference between a novel and a work of nonfiction any more than I knew the difference between a period and a full stop. But I managed to find something: a short story by DH Lawrence. The old book felt important to me, and was short enough not to bore me or put up much of a fight. I didn’t have the words to describe what happened to me while turning the pages of that short story, but I knew language became something three-dimensional, and everything around me seemed connected by an unexpressed narrative. From then on, I read every day, keeping a notebook with me to write down interesting words. I covered my room with the faces and quotes of my favourite authors printed from the library. I taught myself as many passages and poems as my mind could stand. Each book was like uncovering the details of the world around me, piece by piece. And the longer it took, the better. My passion began to lay the ground for a career as a writer, igniting my creativity and driving me to explore the limitless possibilities of storytelling. 1. B "Whenever there is a reason to be stressed, your nervous system sends hormones (激素) throughout your body," says Marta Zaraska, author of the new book "Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100". Those stress hormones are produced to tell you to face dangers, Zaraska says. But over time, humans' stressors, or stress points, have changed considerably. The hormones are now "constantly activated" by stress points from busy modern life such as finances, work, or school, she says. That means the hormones are constantly flooding the body, putting us in a never-ending fight-or-flight state. There are detrimental effects from the endless production of stress hormones, such as a higher risk of diabetes (糖尿病) or heart disease, Zaraska says. But at the same time, so-called "social hormones" can also be activated when we're socially connected to other people. Those also have key impacts on our health. One example is the Roseto effect. In the early 1960s, a community in Roseto, Pennsylvania, had a death rate that was about 35% lower than the general U.S. population. Roseto residents weren't particularly healthy people — many had bad eating habits. There was also nothing unusual about their genes (基因). But their close contact with each other proved valuable. At the time, no one was dying from heart attacks in Roseto, Zaraska says. This attracted scientists and they started to study the population. Researchers found the Roseto community — built on 22 community organizations for only 2,000 residents and principles of volunteering, taking care of public space and caring for each other — actually had amazing health benefits. But researchers also predicted that if Roseto residents lost their communal touch, their overall health would fail. "Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened generations later in the 1970s and so on," Zaraska says. "And when people started working longer hours, they stopped being so connected to their community and their health also just went back to the American average." "The best state is when you are socially connected, optimistic, and you eat healthily and exercise," Zaraska says. 24. What does Zaraska tell us about stress hormones? A. They help people better adapt to busy modern life. B. They have become less effective than before. C. They aim to remind people of dangers. D. They are difficult to produce. 25. What does the underlined word "detrimental" in paragraph 3 mean? A. Overall. B. Harmful. C. Unclear. D. Immediate. 26. What was the major reason for Roseto residents' lower death rate? A. Their distinctive genes. B. Their peaceful living style. C. Their healthy eating habits. D. Their deep social connections. 27. What can we say about the researchers' prediction for the community? A. It was quite misleading. B. It proved to be correct. C. It seemed a bit senseless. D. It was based on new theories. C As countries around the world try to cut down on throwaway plastic shopping bags, Bangladesh is hoping to find an alternative (替代品): plastic-like bags made from jute (黄麻纤维), the plant fiber used for making cloth and rope. Bangladesh is the world's second biggest producer of jute after India, though the so-called "golden fiber" — named for its color and its once-high price — has lost its fame as demand has fallen. Now, however, a Bangladeshi scientist has found a way to turn the fiber into low-cost biodegradable (可生物降解的) bags that look and feel much like plastic ones. "The physical qualities are quite similar," said Mubarak Ahmad Khan, a scientific adviser to the state-run Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) and leader of the team that developed the new "sonali" — the Bengali word for "golden" — bags. He said compared with normal plastic bags, the jute bags are biodegradable only after three months put in the soil, and can also be recycled. BJMC is now producing 2,000 of the bags a day on an experimental basis, but plans to increase production after signing an agreement last October with a Japanese green packaging company. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in March encouraged those working on the project "to help promote the wider usage of the golden bags" for both economic and environmental gains. In April, the government approved about $900,000 to help support large-scale (大规模的) production of the bags. "Today more than 60 countries have limited the use of plastic bags in at least some regions or cities. And more than 100 Bangladeshi and international companies are looking into using the new jute-based shopping bags. Every day, I am receiving emails or phone calls from buyers from different countries including Britain, Australia, the United States, Canada and France," Khan said, whose company hopes eventually to produce 10 million of the bags each month. 28. What is special about the bag created by BJMC? A. It is a plastic-like bag made from jute. B. It is of high quality though very expensive. C. It takes about one month to break down in the soil. D. It is based on advanced technology developed by India. 29. What did BJMC decide to do after its cooperation with the Japanese company? A. It developed the global market. B. It achieved international fame. C. It sped up the production of the bag. D. It got support from the Japanese government. 30. What is the Bangladesh government's attitude toward the bag? A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Unclear. D. Supportive. 31. What can we say about the bag according to Khan's words in the last paragraph? A. It has changed public opinion about Bangladesh. B. It will create new environmental problems. C. It is in great demand around the world. D. It is unacceptable to western countries. D A two-armed robot can grasp a folded hospital gown (病号衣) and dress a medical mannequin (人体模型) lying on a bed. The technology isn't yet ready for use on people, but it is an experimental step towards robotic nurses in hospitals. Fan Zhang and Yannis Demiris at Imperial College London tested their robot in a setting that closely simulated (模拟) the Certified Nursing Assistant test used in US healthcare, in which a nurse has to put an open-backed gown on a person with weak arms. Instead of a human, however, they used a mannequin designed for medical training. Flexible objects like a gown are extremely difficult for robots to work with, because their overall shape and size vary greatly. Instead of trying to track the entire gown, the robot focuses only on key points that it needs to grasp and handle. The pair trained the robot using a computer simulation of the problem before running any physical trials. Once trained, the robot successfully dressed the simulated patient 90.5 percent of the time. Mehmet Dogar at the University of Leeds, UK, says that identifying key spots on the gown and largely ignoring the location of all other points "looks like a good approach". "When you're putting your own shirt on, putting your hand through the sleeve (袖子), you don't exactly know where the rest of the shirt is, right?" he says. Despite this, Dogar says that robotic nurses are still some way off. "If you got this robot and put it in a real hospital, even just for this task, it will fail many times due to variations in the problem. So, I don't think we can say robotic nurses are coming soon, but these are all research questions that we need to ask and study so that we can move towards that," he says. 32. What can be learned about the scientists' experiment? A. It had a 95% success rate. B. It involved a real patient. C. It simulated a scene in a real-life nursing test. D. It was supported by the US healthcare system. 33. Why is it hard for a robotic nurse to dress a human? A. It can't track the entire gown. B. It can't find the sleeves of the gown. C. It is unable to recognize folded items. D. It has difficulty handling flexible objects. 34.What does "a good approach" in paragraph 5 probably refer to? A. Putting robotic nurses on physical trials first. B. Letting robotic nurses focus on the rest of the cloth. C. Teaching robotic nurses to grasp certain spots of the gown. D. Familiarizing robotic nurses with every part of the human body. 35. What does Dogar say about robotic nurses? A. They have a long way to go. B. They can assist nurses greatly now. C. They can be put in real hospitals soon. D. They will reduce human employment opportunities. Art, nature and life are closely connected with each other. 36 . I had passed my level 3 qualification for personal training and fitness instructing and was trying to get ahead of my colleagues by going further than the qualification required. I wasn’t doing very well and was explaining this to my cousin, who was my client. It was during one of the training sessions that he started going on about the benefits of university. He was 19 and I was 23. My only thought while he was talking was how smart he must be, and how much I enjoyed talking to people who were at university. Then he asked me why I didn’t go to university. “Study exercise science, then you’ll be better than all your colleagues in here,” he said. No chance, I thought. Either way, he was taking too much and compromising (影响) his training so I cut his rest time, breaking up any talk about my possible academic success. But soon after, he arrived at my house with his sister — we always hung out together. She picked up my laptop and kept it for quite a long time. When I asked her what she was doing, she told me she was writing a personal statement for me to go to university. Two weeks later, I was admitted as a mature student at the University of Bolton. The anxiety I’d felt when I was given my ID card stayed with me. How was I going to last three years? The first module (单元) of my sport and exercise science degree was on research methods. Our lecturer was Dr Colin Robertson, who told the class to get used to reading: start reading research papers, scientific journals and some literature. From then on, I read every day, keeping a notebook with me to write down interesting words. So I made my way to the library the next day and looked for some books.
