The Chengni inkstone (澄泥砚) is one of the “four famous inkstones” in our country. The skill for making it had once been lost for hundreds of years and was later brought back by Lin Xiaolin’s grandfather Lin Yongmao and his father Lin Tao.
In 1986, Lin Yongmao worked at a museum, where he read many books about making the Chengni inkstone and decided to bring this skill back to life. Although they learned from historical papers, this was not an easy task. It took them two years to find suitable materials. After failing many times, they at last succeeded in making two Chengni inkstones in 1991. It takes nearly a year and more than 10 steps to make a Chengni inkstone.
Lin Xiaolin, as the inheritor (继承人) of the skill for making the Chengni inkstone, has known the Chengni inkstone since his childhood. In 2012, he went abroad to study modern technologies. “Passing on the skill is the key to keeping it alive,” Lin Xiaolin said. So he returned to China after graduating from college, hoping to create more great Chengni inkstones by using modern technologies and traditional designs. And he has achieved much success.
The Chengni inkstone has a history of over 1,000 years. Lin Xiaolin is trying hard to bring more energy to the Chengni inkstone and make it a symbol of Chinese culture.

I never used to care about animals or the environment. But when I knew some animals were in danger, I changed my mind. I want to look after them and protect them. I always enjoy watching the sea, so I joined an organization that protected loggerhead turtles (红海龟) last summer.
I learn a lot about loggerhead turtles there. They are disappearing because people have built houses near the sandy beaches where loggerhead turtles lay their eggs. Also, baby loggerhead turtles sometimes need the moonlight to find the sea. But if there is a town near the beach, the baby loggerhead turtles will be misled by the lights and they may never reach the sea. In this case, they may die. Besides, loggerhead turtles may eat plastic rubbish from the town because it looks like fish, which is harmful to their health. They need clean beaches to live safely.
I had an interesting job. Every day, I searched for turtle nests (巢) and counted the eggs in them. Then I put cages (笼子) around the nests. At night, I checked the beach to make sure that no animals were trying to eat the eggs. I also cleaned the beach and helped baby loggerhead turtles return to the ocean. It was great fun.
Animals are our good friends, so we have the responsibility to protect them. A world without animals would be a “grey” world. Humans and animals should live together in harmony (和谐).
46. When did the writer join the organization that protected loggerhead turtles?
A. Last spring. B. Last summer. C. Last autumn. D. Last winter.
47. What is introduced in Paragraph 2 about the loggerhead turtles?
A. The way of cleaning the beaches.
B. The result of protecting baby loggerhead turtles.
C. The home of loggerhead turtles.
D. The reasons for the disappearance of loggerhead turtles.
48. What did the writer put around the nests?
A. Cages. B. Baby loggerhead turtles. C. Food. D. Loggerhead turtles’ eggs.
49. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To warn people not to swim in the sea.
B. To call on more and more people to protect animals.
C. To encourage people to join an organization actively.
D. To show the relationship between humans and animals.
