I plan to go to the library to study, but when I walked past a park, I saw an old ladies sitting on the ground looking worried. I went over and asked her what was wrong. He told me he couldn't find her way home and forgot her family's phone number. SHE remembered living near a big supermarket, so I decided to help her look for her home. We walked around the community and I asked the shopkeepers for help too. After about an hour, we found her house. Her daughter was so thankful and wanted to thank me with a gift, but I refused. I told her helping others is what everyone should do. On my way to the library, I felt very happy. That day, I realized that helping others doesn't need to be a big thing. Even a small act of kindness can bring warmth to others and make myself feel good too. Last saturday morning, I had a meaningful experience of helping others. Hey! Got big, strange questions? We’ve got answers!
Question 1: Do pets know their names?
Yes — kind of. Pets don’t speak to human, but they do recognize sounds. One study has shown that pets know the difference between the names we’ve given them and similar-sounding words, even when said by a stranger. The study shows 9 out of 10 dogs will come when called, because answering usually means praise and treats.
Question 2: Where does tap water come from?
Some scientists think the water on Earth first came about 4.6 billion years ago. It was ice on rocks from space that hit the young Earth. Since then, these water drops have moved through the water cycle again and again. This means the water you drink today might have been drunk by a huge dinosaur millions of years ago!
Question 3: What’s the farthest we’ve sent something into space?
About 15.7 billion miles! In 1977, NASA scientists launched two spacecrafts, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, to study the outer planets of solar system and beyond. Today Voyager 1 is the farthest object we’ve sent into the universe, while Voyager 2 is 13.1 billion miles away. Will they meet aliens? Only time will tell!
16. Which is the fact about the study of some animals according to the text?
A. Pets don’t like strangers.
B. Pets can’t travel to the outer planets.
C. Dinosaurs drink a lot of water every day.
D. Dogs can tell their names from similar words.
17. How far has Voyager 1 been sent from the earth?
A. 4.6 billion miles. B. 9 billion miles. C. 13.1 billion miles. D. 15.7 billion miles.
18. In which part of the magazine can you most probably read this text?
A. Fun Science B. Study Tips C. Life Stories D. Travel Guides
B
All over the world people love listening to and telling stories. Sometimes they tell stories about things that happened. And sometimes they tell about made-up adventures. Often people tell stories to help them remember important people and how they lived. Do you know stories about your parents or grandparents?
Sometimes people use pictures to tell stories. The rock painting from Africa is thousands of years old. What story do you think it is telling?
Each area of the world has its own favorite stories and characters. Stories like “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Cinderella” are very old. Long ago they were told by wandering storytellers or by families sitting around the fire at night. As the stories were told, people added new parts or forgot to tell others. Stories don’t always stay the same!
Sometimes people tell stories to explain things that are mysterious or hard to understand. Native Americans tell many stories about how the earth was made with the help of Coyote, who brought warmth and light to the earth by stealing fire from the sun.
People often act out stories. Puppet shows (木偶戏) tell stories too. In Indonesia and Malaysia, artists make fancy shadow puppets. They use them to tell stories about choosing between right and wrong. Puppeteers in Vietnam stand in water behind a screen. They move wooden puppets on long sticks. To people watching the show, it looks as if the puppets move through the water by themselves. Singers sing the story while music plays.
You can tell stories too. Stick some googly (卡通式) eyes on a sock and put on a puppet show. Or draw a picture that tells a story. Or sing your story. It can be real or make-believe. Everyone loves stories!
19. Why do people often tell stories?
A. To connect with each other.
B. To practise speaking loudly.
C. To make up new adventures about their parents.
D. To help them remember important people and the way they lived.
20. What can we know about storytelling from the passage?
A. All traditional stories stay the same forever.
B. Rock paintings are too old to tell any stories.
C. Stories change over time as people tell them.
D. Puppet shows are only popular in Southeast Asia.
21. What do people use to act out stories in Indonesia and Malaysia?
A. Fire and music. B. Googly eyes. C. Shadow puppets. D. Rock paintings.
22. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To explain why some old stories have changed a lot.
B. To show the many ways and meanings of storytelling.
C. To teach readers how to make their own puppet shows.
D. To compare different traditional stories around the world.

The Spring Festival has always been a time of getting together, going back home and welcoming new beginnings. A season filled with warmth, joy and the celebration of national and local traditions. However, this year, the festival became very special for me, as the gala (盛会,庆典,演出) stage was brought to Yiwu in Zhejiang Province, the location of my university, Zhejiang University International School of Medicine, and I was among the performers at China’s nationally televised 2026 China Media Group Spring Festival Gala.
The moment I walked into the hall, I realized the festival was beginning to have new meaning for me this year. The stage was huge, wonderful and filled with energy. The size of the show was also beyond anything I could have imagined. I soon realized the effort that went into making the gala possible. We spent long nights and undertook many rehearsals (排练) to perfect our performance.
One of the best highlights was meeting and being on the same stage with Chinese movie star Jackie Chan. I never imagined that my journey as an international student would lead to such an unforgettable experience.
Beyond the gala, my experience of the Chinese New Year this year was equally enriching. This year we celebrated with an annual Chinese New Year dinner hosted by our school, where we wrote the Chinese character fu for good fortune and happiness, designed our own decorations, and made dumplings together.
In the past, my experience of the Chinese New Year was mostly as a visitor appreciating the beautiful traditions. This year, I experienced it as a participant. Being part of the gala and celebrating with my fellow students made the festival feel more meaningful. I felt a sense of pride and belonging that I had not felt in any of my previous years here before.
This Spring Festival reminded me that it is more than a celebration: It is about community, contribution and creating moments that stay forever. It is a reminder that every effort, every rehearsal and every shared smile contributes to these moments, making them unforgettable. What a great way to start the year!
23. Why was this year’s Spring Festival special for the girl?
A. Because she performed at the Spring Festival Gala.
B. Because she became an international student in Yiwu.
C. Because she experienced the local traditions in China.
D. Because she celebrated the festival with her classmates.
24. What did the girl realize after walking into the hall?
A. The performance needed more practice.
B. The festival was smaller than expected.
C. The gala required a lot of effort to organize.
D. The stage was not was wonderful as imagined.
25. What does the underlined word “participant” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. attendee B. speaker C. competitor D. researcher
26. What is the best title of this passage?
A. A Gala for Gathering B. The Magic of Chinese Culture
C. The Journey of International Study D. The Celebration for the Spring Festival
D
Cathy knows that she has to hand in an essay next Monday. However, instead of beginning work on it today, she waits until the last minute, and starts work on Sunday night. Of course, it is impossible to do a good job writing an essay in one night, so she gets a bad grade. She then kicks herself for not starting earlier and promises to do better next time, but she doesn’t.
Does Cathy’s story sound familiar? Like Cathy, many of us procrastinate — we put off doing something important until the last moment. But why do we do this? Some research shows that we procrastinate because of negative feelings, such as fear or worry. We are afraid of doing a poor job or getting bad grades. We think that we might fail. We put off doing the work in order to avoid having these bad feelings. Sadly, we are more likely to fail or do poorly when we procrastinate. This creates even more negative feelings and makes it more likely that we will procrastinate the next time.
The long-term solution to this problem is to deal with our negative feelings. We need to forgive ourselves for failing. We need to accept that sometimes we will not meet the mark. We also need to realize that difficult work isn’t always a bad thing. It is through difficulty that we learn and grow.
So what can we do? Here are some tips. First, realize that once we face our fears and get started, our fears often go away, and we start to enjoy the work. Second, break large projects into small parts, each with their own smaller deadline. Third, reward yourself for getting a step done. Relax or do something fun, then get back to work. Finally, remove temptation (诱惑). This means if you watch TV to put off work, then work at the library.
In the end, it is up to you and the actions you take to overcome procrastination. So what are you waiting for?
27. Why does Cathy get a low grade on the essay?
A. She does not care about her study at all.
B. She waits until the last minute to write it.
C. She has no ideas about what to write in it.
D. She does not finish it before Sunday night.
28. According to the passage, where does procrastination mainly come from?
A. Difficult and boring subjects.
B. Too much free time every day.
