In June 2020, my husband and I moved home to New Zealand after I quit my job. We settled in with my husband's parents, and I spent much of my time surfing the Internet. One day a friend posted a photo on social media of a beautiful sk irt she'd made. I hadn't thought about sewing my own clothes, but I needed something to do. My husband's mum had a sewing machine and generously gifted it to me.
Over the next few months, I became a passionate sewist. I created various garments (衣服) and learned more practical skills than I'd had since I was young.
My great-grandmothers and grandmothers on both sides sewed clothes for their families. Sewing wasn't a leisure activity for them; I'm sure they'd be surprised it's a leisure activity for me. But when I'm sewing,I feel in touch with them. My hands, like theirs, have learned to read fabric and adjust fit. We share this thread(线) of creativity across the centuries.
What you wear says something about your taste, your history, your values, where you come from and whose gaze(注视) you' re appealing to. It's exciting and terrifying to be perceived, and sewing has helped me think more consciously about what kind of self I want to present to the world. I can't control anyone's perception of me, but I am convinced I can have my own voice.
Sewing implies a belief that there will be an occasion to wear whatever garment you' re making. Fabrie historian Sofi Thanhauser once said, “Sewing is an act of investment in a future self, like cooking or gardening.” I sew because it helps me believe in the future and in the person who will wear the new dress. When I'm sewing, I'm really saying I want to see what happens next.
24. What did the post inspire the author to do?
A. Start a sewing career. B. Try sewing to kill time.
C. Buy a sewing machine. D. Learn sewing on her own.
25. How does sewing change the author's life?
A. It makes her a professional sewist. B. It frees her from negative emotions.
C. It offers her family a leisure activity. D. It connects her with her family roots.
26. What does sewing serve as according to paragraph 4?
A. A tool to attract others. B. A chance to show values.
C. A means of self-expression. D. A way of voicing objections.
27. Why does the author quote the fabric historian?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To lead to a new topic. D. To confirm her insight.
C
Conventional wisdom holds that transitioning from oil to plant-based biofuels (生物燃料) carries numerous green advantages. For many people, since such fuels are obtained from agricultural crops, they are naturally renewable. And our own farmers typically produce them domestically, reducing our dependence on unstable foreign sources of oil. Additionally, they cause less pollution than traditional fuels. They also do not have much of contribution of greenhouse gases to the global climate change problem.
Despite the upsides, however, experts point out that a total shift from gas to biofuels, given the number of gas-only cars already on the road and the lack of biofuel filling equipment, would take some time.
Another major obstacle to widespread adoption of biofuels is the challenge of growing enough crops to meet demand —— something doubters say might well require turning just about all of the world's remaining forests and open spaces into agricultural land.“Replacing only 5 percent of the nation's diesel (柴油)consumption with biodiesel would require applying approximately 60 percent of today's soy (大豆) crops to biodiesel production,” says Matthew Brown, an energy consultant and former energy program director at theNational Conference of State Legislatures.“That's bad news for tofu lovers.” Of course, soy is now much more likely to be grown as an industrial product than as a food ingredient!
There is no simple, immediate solution to freeing ourselves from traditional fuels and the future will likely see a combination of sources —— from wind and ocean currents to hydrogen, solar and, yes, some crops used for biofuels. The“elephant in the living room” that people often pay no attention to when considering energy options, however, is the clear hard reality that we must reduce our consumption, not just replace it with something else. Indeed, conservation is probably the largest single“alternative fuel”available to us.
-28. What is the focus of conventional wisdom concerning biofuels?
A. Their numerous sources. B. Their domestic production.
C. Their environmental benefits. D. Their widespread adoption.
29. What do Matthew Brown's words imply?
A. Soy is more valuable as fuel than as food. B. Biofuel production threatens food supply.
C. Biodiesel requires less soy than expected. D. Tofu lovers will reduce their consumption.
30. What does the underlined part“elephant in the living room” in the last paragraph mean?
A. An obvious but ignored issue. B. A huge but insignificant object.
C. An accessible and valued option. D. A time-consuming and hard task.
31. Which can be the suitable title of the text?
A. Biofuels: Not a Quick Fix B. Biofuels: A Promising Future
C. The True Cost of Going Green D. The Battle Between Soy and Oil
D
In 2010, the whale scientist Iain Kerr traveled to the Gulf of Mexico to study how one of the largest marine oil spills(泄漏) affected whales, but it wasn't going well. Each time his boat approached a whale surfacing for air, the animal disappeared beneath the waves.
As darkness fell, a whale dove in front of Ker r and covered him in the whale blow. That unpleasant experience gave Kerr an idea: What if he could collect that same blow by somehow flying over the whale?Researchers can gather much information from whale blows , including the animal's DNA information and its sex.
After many experiments, Kerr's idea turned into a drone fitted with six dishes that collect whale blows by flying over the animal as it surfaces and breathes out through its blowhole. Today, drones like this are employed to gather whale blows all over the world, and not just from sper m whales(抹香鲸): They' re also collecting this scientifically valuable whale blow from blue whales and dolphins.
Crucially, drones reduce the need to get close to whales with a boat. This means less disturbance to the animals, and is also safer for scientists. Drones also have significant advantages over planes, which have historically played a large role in collecting whale data.
“The rapid advancement of drone technology makes it difficult to predict what marine mammal (哺乳动物) research will look like in the future,” says Stewart, an ecologist from Orego n State University. “It's hard to imagine what the next amazing thing might be.”
While drones are opening up a world of possibilities for whale scientists, there's still room for improvement. Many drones, especially small ones, have battery limitations. “You can only fly for maybe45 minutes or an hour with a small drone, even if you' re really lucky,” says Johnston, a marine conservation ecologist. Drone regulations limit the flight range in many countries — in the United States, for example, operators must keep the machines within their line of sight unless they have a special license.
32. What was a barrier to Kerr's collecting information for research?
A. The severe oil spill. B. The whale's reaction.
C. The boat's appearance. D. The geographic limitation.
33. Why are blue whales and dolphins mentioned?
A. To illustrate the function of the drone. B. To present the instructions on the drone.
C. To prove the drone's species adaptability. D. To show the drone's advantage over planes.
34. In which tone does Stewart make his remark?
A. Unsure but positive. B. Curious but conservative.
C. Urgent and hopeful. D. Critical and disapproving.
35. What might be a technological upgrade direction for drones?
A. Simpler operation. B. Lower battery cost.
C. Looser regulation. D. Longer flight duration.

When I started college, I expected to succeed. I thought I would pass my classes, make friends, and enjoy college life. I chose marine science because I loved animals and thought it was the pe rfect way to turn that passion into a career. I was confident I had made the right choice. 36
I struggled with the classes, especially math and science. Loving animals didn't make marine science as easy as I had thought. Eventually, I was placed on academic probation (察看). 37 I started looking into other options, trying to figure out where I could realistically succeed. I came across community college and viewed it as a way to rest without giving up on my education entirely.
I decided to transfer to Pasadena City College, a community college. I chose kinesiology (人体运动学) as my new major because I ran cross-country. I thought becoming an athletic trainer could be a great path. I was excited to try something new. 38 I still could not pass the science and math classes. My motivation dropped again, and I even started wondering if stepping away from school might be the right choice.
39 I considered digital art, but it didn't feel right. Then I looked into business administration. Classes like business law and marketing interested me. I pictured myself working in sports marketing or running my own business. The classes were still challenging, but they felt more manageable and connected to what I truly cared about. I'm doing better now, passing my classes.
I used to think passion alone would carry me through college, but I' ve learned it takes more than that.40 That's what helped me stay motivated and start enjoying school again. I' ve learned that changing direction is not failure —— it is growth.
A. It was a tough but meaningful choice.
B. Then, the same issue came back again.
C. But my confidence took a hit very soon.
D. That was why I considered being a business major.
E. Instead of giving up, I started researching other majors.

“There’s another deep infection... I’m afraid we’re going to have to amputate (截肢) your son’s leg,” the doctor explained to Jackie Burns as she fought back tears of desperation.
In June 2018, her 10-year-old son Gavin was in a horrific car accident. He had been airlifted by medical helicopter to a local children’s hospital where he underwent several surgeries trying to save his left leg and foot. But nothing had worked. Gavin ultimately had to have his leg amputated from the knee down. After 17 days in the hospital, the boy was finally able to go home.
The following year, Gavin did not go to a regular school. Instead, he was taught at home. This was very difficult because he had to handle many things at once. He needed to go to physical therapy (治疗) regularly, visit the doctor, and learn how to use his prosthetic leg (假肢). Later, he had to have another surgery. Life was very hard for him.
When he was finally able to go back to school, he still needed help. Besides using his prosthetic leg, he also had to use a wheelchair to get around. He was very worried about fitting in with his classmates again. Other kids could run and jump, but he was not the same. He was afraid people might look at him differently or think he was strange.
“You’re still the same Gavin inside even though you may look different from other kids,” Jackie said, hugging him tightly. “You can still do anything you put your mind to. I believe in you!”
As the years rolled by, Gavin held on to his mother’s words, and by high school, he had become stronger, more confident and more skilled at using his prosthetic leg.
One day, the 17-year-old came into the kitchen with a smile. “Mom, I want to play football.” Jackie froze and her heart skipped a beat. “Are you sure?” Gavin raised his head with confidence and answered loudly and clearly, “I am. After all, you said I could do anything!”

With his parents’ support, Gavin signed up for the football team and was accepted. At first, he was a bit nervous, wondering if he could keep up with the other players who all had two healthy legs. However, his coach, who had seen Gavin’s determination during the tryouts, encouraged him, saying, “You’ve got a strong spirit, Gavin, and that’s what matters most on the field.” Gavin took these words to heart and practiced tirelessly, learning how to balance and run with his prosthetic leg. His teammates, who initially had doubts, soon grew to respect him for his hard work and positive attitude.
Finally, the day for the football game came. Gavin’s heart pounded with excitement as he stepped onto the field, his prosthetic leg feeling steady beneath him. The crowd roared as the game began, and Gavin focused on every move, knowing that this was his chance to prove himself. During a crucial play, he intercepted the ball and sprinted towards the goal, his teammates cheering him on. As he scored, the stadium erupted in applause, and Gavin knew that all his efforts had paid off. After the game, his coach hugged him and said, “You’ve shown everyone that nothing can stop you, Gavin.” Gavin smiled, feeling proud of what he had achieved, knowing that his mother’s words had guided him every step of the way.
