Listening space junk page one hundred and four two listen . to the lecture and check if your guesses were correct, then write down the main idea of the lecture. There are tens of thousands of man made objects in orbit around the earth. Many of them are useful things like space stations on weather satellites. However, people have left lots of unwanted objects in space too, such as parts of all rockets. These objects are known as space junk. Since the nineteen fifties, people have sent over ten thousand satellites tes into space. Many of these satellites have stopped working, but they are still in orbit because IT is too expensive to bring them back to the earth. Astronauts have also dropped things during their spacewalks, such as cameras, gloves and tool bags. These objects continue to orbit the earth as space junk. Space drunk is a big problem, and IT is getting worse. Every year, we send more and more things into orbit, and this means more and more space junk in orbit too. Most pieces of space junk are very small, but they can still be very dangerous. Objects in orbit, such as satellites and spacecraft, are all travelling very, very fast. This means a small piece of space junk can destroy a spacecraft or satellite. When this happens, the spacecraft or satellite is broken up in to hundreds of pieces, and there will be even more space junk in orbit. Scientists are very worried about space junk because I can make space missions very dangerous. If there is too much space junkin orbit IT will become impossible to travel into space. Countries around the world need to work together to solve this difficult problem. Three, listen again and choose the correct answers. Note that there can be more than one answer to a question. Discuss in pairs. Post-listening 04 Report Speaking 05 Discussing possibilities of living on Mars 1 Two students are talking about going to Mars. Read the dialogue and learn how to express possibility and impossibility. Pay attention to the expressions in blue. S1: I’m going to visit Mars. S2: That’s impossible! You must be joking. S1: No, I’m not joking. It’ll be possible to travel to Mars in the near future! S2: Says who? S1: The scientists. They say that we’ve made great progress in Mars exploration. So it’s very likely that we’ll be able to fly there by the 2050s. S2: I still think it’s unlikely. 2 Do you think people will be able to live on Mars in the future? Discuss in pairs. Use the facts below to help you. Speaking 05 What scientists know about Mars? • There’s very little oxygen. The air is mostly CO2 (about 95%). • It’s very cold (average surface temperature: -63 °C). • The air is thin, so the radiation levels are high. • There is ice on Mars’s north pole. In the future, water may allow people to survive there. • Of all the planets, the environment on Mars is most similar to the Earth’s. • There are different seasons on Mars, just like on Earth. 辐射 平均的 be similar to与……相似 When we talk about things we are not sure about, we can use the expressions below. Tip Expressing possibility It’s possible to... It’s (very) likely that... It’s quite probable that... There is a good chance that... Expressing impossibility It’s impossible to... It’s unlikely that... I seriously doubt that... That’s impossible! Deep thinking 07 Let’s think about it. While space junk threatens Earth’s orbit, exploring Mars offers a hopeful new frontier for humanity’s future in space. Summary 08 The words we have learned 1.There are many ____________________ around the Earth, like old rockets. 2.Small pieces of ____________ can ____________ satellites easily. 3.Things that travel in ____________ move very fast. 4.________________ are becoming more dangerous because of space junk. 5.We must clean up ____________ to protect spacecraft. 6.Some _________________ fall out of ____________ and burn up. 7.Space junk may ____________ important tools for ____________. space junk, destroy, man-made objects, space missions, orbit Space missions man-made objects orbit destroy space missions space junk orbit space junk destroy man-made objects Unit 7 Space exploration Listening and speaking 二、Speaking: Living on Mars 核心话题:Can we live on Mars? Mars Facts ❌ Challenges: little O₂, cold, high radiation ✅ Advantages: ice (water), similar environment, seasons Key Sentences ✅ Possibility: It's possible/likely that... ❌ Impossibility: It's impossible/unlikely that... Why is space junk a problem? What is it? Man-made objects in Earth's orbit (e.g. broken satellites, rocket parts) Why dangerous? Fast speed → destroy spacecraft/satellites → risk space missions Problems: Endanger space missions Hit satellites/spacecraft Fall to Earth and hurt people Assessment 09 Self-assessment I can master key words and expressions about space exploration. I can get main ideas and details while listening and talk about space simply. I can think about space problems and show interest in science. Basic (基础) Improving(提升) Extend (拓展) Homework 10 1.
