Qinghai-Xizang Railway
Where it goes: Xining to Lhasa
Why not start with the world's highest train ride? The Qinghai-Xizang Railway climbs to great heights of over 16,000 feet as it snakes through the Himalayas. The wonderful 1215-mile journey only makes seven stops.

Glacier Express

It's much more about the journey than the destination, and it gives new meaning to the term “slow travel”, taking over seven hours to pass just 180 miles. It is often said that the high school period is one of the most important stages that an individual will experience, and is often seen as a critical and life-shaping time. During this period, people often begin to discover what is meaningful to them and how they plan to continue living their lives. Volunteering at St. Clare’s Hospital has helped me form a positive experience during my high school years.
When I first began volunteering, I was very nervous about meeting new people and being pushed outside of my comfort zone. At the beginning of my volunteering experience, I was rather timid and not very outgoing. Fortunately, as time went by, I discovered how to introduce myself to new volunteers, to go out of my way to make patients feel welcome, and to extend the hand of friendship to others. I learned to respect diversity, which turned out to be particularly helpful in the real world.
My volunteering experience at the hospital has led me to believe that my love and sympathy for the disabled can brighten up the day of those lonely patients. There is another valuable lesson I have learned from the volunteer program: The significance of “service” involves making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the harmony of the community. Now I feel content each time I finish my shift. This positive feeling has motivated me to continue carrying on this worthwhile cause, and has become something that I view as having irreplaceable importance to my life.
It’s a great pity that many teenagers in my generation have not had experiences similar to mine and therefore missed out on some of the important lessons that can be learned in life. Knowing that I made a positive impact on someone is an emotionally uplifting experience that can never be matched by money or fame. And, to the best of my ability, I will follow this path of service throughout my life.
24.What does the author think of the high school period?
A.It deserves to be taken seriously. B.It is often criticized by people.
C.It brings no significance to life. D.It is full of unplanned experiences.
25.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The importance of diversity in the world.
B.The author’s changes brought about by volunteering
C.Friendship between volunteers and patients.
D.Ways to help and respect patients.
26.What does the underlined word “timid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Confident. B.Shy. C.Brave. D.Calm.
27.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To call on the young to volunteer.
B.To share the author’s volunteering experience.
C.To explain the benefits of volunteering.
D.To introduce suitable community work.

Picture this: you are in a position where your phone runs out of battery, but you don’t have anywhere to charge it. Well, what if the clothing you were wearing could help you out? It’s an option that isn’t as strange as you might think. Now the latest fashion breakthrough is taking “activewear” in an entirely new direction: researchers at Nottingham Trent University have developed a new fabric that can keep small devices juiced.
The prototype (样品) includes 1,200 tiny solar panels, each measuring just 5 by 1.5 millimeters. It can generate 400 milliwatts (毫瓦特) of electrical energy, enough to charge electronic devices.
“Until now very few people have considered their clothing products could be used for charging electronic devices,” explains Theodore Hughes-Riley, an associate professor of Electronic Textiles. “The material which we have developed appears and behaves the same as any ordinary fabric, as it can be washed in a machine. Besides, because the tiny solar cells are made up of silicon, wearers aren’t able to even notice a discrepancy in the fabric’s composition when it is compared to standard clothing.”
Potential products include items like outerwear, backpacks and other carrying bags using the material, all of which could allow wearers to keep their devices charged during the day. “Electronic fabrics really have the potential to change people’s relationship with technology, as this prototype shows how we could do away with charging many devices on the wall,” adds Theodore.
Solar power innovations are key to transitioning (转变) human society from fossil fuel technologies, and are coming into a variety of fields. The European Space Agency, for example, plans to experiment with solar panel systems orbiting above Earth. Since there are no real “days” or “nights” in space, potential solar power generation could be as much as 8 or 9 times greater than what’s currently achievable here on Earth’s surface. As powerful as that may one day be for us, it’s encouraging to know even changes like the composition of our clothing can help facilitate the necessary renewable energy shift for our species.
28.What makes the new fabric special?
A.It can produce electricity from sunlight.
B.It can change color in the sun.
C.It is much softer than standard clothing.
D.It can adjust body temperature.
29.What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Progress. B.Distinction.
C.Similarity. D.Mismatch.
30.How does the innovation impact our relationship with technology according to Theodore?
A.By making electronic devices cheaper and cheaper.
B.By increasing our dependence on electronic devices.
C.By making us more aware of our energy consumption.
D.By reducing the demand for fixed charging equipment.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Solar energy will soon replace fossil fuels.
B.Solar power is more useful in space than on Earth.
C.Small changes can contribute to a renewable energy future.
D.Space exploration is necessary for advancing solar technology.

The Nazca Lines (纳斯卡线条) are a famous group of huge ancient drawings in the desert in southern Peru. The Nazca people made the drawings by removing the reddish top layer of rocks in the desert. This revealed the lighter dirt underneath.
The drawings are called “geoglyphs (地画)”. They were usually drawn with a single long, winding line. Many of the lines are extremely long, and can only be fully seen from the air. The largest geoglyph line is around 366 meters long. But most of the newly-found geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are roughly 9 meters in length. Many of the new geoglyphs seem to show humans, as well as animals.
To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for likely geoglyphs. The AI program made a lot of mistakes — for every 36 possible geoglyphs the program found, the researchers discovered roughly one actual geoglyph. Even so, the new method turned up geoglyphs much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones (无人机) and AI. “What used to take three or four years, can now be done in two or three days,” said Johny Isla, who’s in charge of studying the Nazca Lines for the country of Peru.
The researchers are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean. Masato Sakai, who led the research, says the new discoveries are helping scientists learn more. For one thing, the scientists discovered a system of paths in the Nazca Desert. These paths aren’t far from groups of the smaller geoglyphs. The researchers believe the paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert, and that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travelers.
The scientists think the way these smaller geoglyphs are grouped together may be the key to understanding them. The larger geoglyphs, which can only be fully seen and understood from the air, are different, and may have been used for ceremonies or other special events.
32.What do we know about the Nazca Lines from the first two paragraphs?
A.They are bright red in color. B.They consist mainly of straight lines.
C.They come in different sizes. D.They are invisible on the ground.
33.What does Johny Isla think of the AI program?
A.Efficient. B.Groundbreaking.
C.Time-consuming. D.Questionable.
34.What will be the focus of the following research on the Nazca Lines?
A.The function of the path system.
B.The way smaller geoglyphs are grouped.
C.The reason why Nazca people liked the drawings.
D.The purpose of creating the Nazca Lines.
35.What can be the best title of this text?
A.AI Tools Help Find Ancient Nazca Lines
B.All Functions of the Nazca Lines Revealed
C.Viewing the Nazca Lines from the Air
D.The Nazca Lines Come back to Life with AI
When people first come across the Law of Attraction (吸引力法则), their hearts and minds often immediately think of one specific thing that they’d love to achieve in their lives. However, the next thought is often “But I can’t do that”. You may come up with all kinds of excuses. 36 Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want.
Small steps create big changes. One of the most common reasons for abandoning dreams is that they simply seem too huge to realize. Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. 37 Then look at each of them. Not so unrealistic now, is it?
38 When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. 39 But you don’t ever need to feel this way! Make today the first day of your new journey towards avoiding regret.
Steps towards your dream are never backwards steps. Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. 40 However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating.
A.You can avoid regret.
B.It makes sense to move forward confidently.
C.Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream.
D.It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate.
E.It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose.
F.For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages.
G.You have enough life experience and knowledge to make changes to pursue your dream.

Due to my unhealthy eating habits, I became fatter and fatter after college. My good friend Anoush was a running enthusiast. So he advised me to lose weight by running and he promised to accompany me to run.
Seven years later, I got more serious about running. And I dreamed to participate in Boston Marathon. Anoush wanted to attend the same marathon with me. Every day we spared our time to practise hard, during which time Anoush gave me much professional guidance and encouragement. And then one day, both of us qualified for the 2017 Boston Marathon. We were excited but unfortunately, several weeks before the marathon, we had a serious quarrel. I didn’t talk with him anymore.
The day came. Anoush and I stood at the starting line. He said, “Good luck! You will certainly finish the marathon.” Hearing his words, I looked at him, saying, “It’s none of your business.”
Then we started running. Soon, I passed Anoush.
But I struggled in the heat starting at mile 16. I felt most of my oxygen went to the muscle in my legs and less in my brain, which made me feel a bit light-headed and dizzy (眩晕的). I continually encouraged myself, “Just get to the finish, run bold, and you will win.” But all phrases that I say to myself didn’t work.
Gradually I felt out of breath and had to slow down my pace. As I ran down the famous last stretch of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street, I fell down on the ground.

【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.C
根据第二段中的“The prototype (样品) includes 1,200 tiny solar panels, each measuring just 5 by 1.5 millimeters. It can generate 400 milliwatts (毫瓦特) of electrical energy, enough to charge electronic devices. (该样品包含1200块微型太阳能电池板,每块尺寸仅为5毫米乘1.5毫米。它可以产生400毫瓦的电能,足以给电子设备充电。)”可知,这种新型面料的特别之处在于能利用阳光发电。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“The material which we have developed appears and behaves the same as any ordinary fabric, as it can be washed in a machine. Besides, because the tiny solar cells are made up of silicon, wearers aren’t able to even notice a discrepancy in the fabric’s composition when it is compared to standard clothing.(我们研发的这种材料外观和性能都与普通面料无异,还可以机洗。此外,由于这些微型太阳能电池由硅制成,与标准服装相比,穿着者甚至察觉不到面料成分的discrepancy。)”可知,这种面料和普通面料差别极小,穿着者无法察觉,因此“discrepancy”的意思是“差异、区别”。故选B项。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中的““Electronic fabrics really have the potential to change people’s relationship with technology, as this prototype shows how we could do away with charging many devices on the wall,” adds Theodore. (“正如这款原型所展示的,我们有望不再需要给许多设备插墙充电,电子织物确实拥有改变人类与科技之间关系的潜力。”西奥多补充道。)”可知,西奥多认为这项创新能减少人们对固定充电设备的需求。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“As powerful as that may one day be for us, it’s encouraging to know even changes like the composition of our clothing can help facilitate the necessary renewable energy shift for our species.(尽管未来这可能会给我们带来巨大助力,但令人鼓舞的是,我们知道即使是像服装成分这样的微小变化,也能帮助推动人类社会必要的可再生能源转型。)”

【答案】32.C 33.A 34.B 35.A
根据第二段“The largest geoglyph line is around 366 meters long. But most of the newly-found geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are roughly 9 meters in length.(最大的地画线长约366米。但大多数新发现的地画都比已经发现的要小,长度大约为9米)”可知,纳斯卡线条大小不一。故选C。
33.推理判断题。 根据第三段“Even so, the new method turned up geoglyphs much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones and AI. “What used to take three or four years, can now be done in two or three days,” said Johny Isla, who’s in charge of studying the Nazca Lines for the country of Peru.(即便如此,这种新方法发现地画的速度,比科学家在没有无人机和人工智能的情况下快得多。负责为秘鲁研究纳斯卡线条的Johny Isla说:“过去需要三到四年才能完成的事情,现在可以在两三天内完成”)”可知,Johny Isla认为人工智能效率很高。故选A。
根据第四段“The researchers are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean. Masato Sakai, who led the research, says the new discoveries are helping scientists learn more.(研究人员仍在试图弄清楚这些地画的含义。领导这项研究的Masato Sakai说,新发现有助于科学家了解更多信息)”和第五段“The scientists think the way these smaller geoglyphs are grouped together may be the key to understanding them.(科学家们认为,这些较小的地画分组的方式可能是理解它们的关键)”可知,接下来对纳斯卡线条的研究重点将是较小地画的分组方式。故选B。
故选A。
【答案】36.C 37.F 38.A 39.E 40.D

36.根据上文“You may come up with all kinds of excuses. (你可能会想出各种各样的借口。)”提到不想付诸行动的各种借口,可知本空要谈到解决这一问题的方案。下文“Here are the reasons why you should believe you can use the Law of Attraction to obtain whatever you want. (下面是为什么你应该相信你可以利用吸引力法则得到你想要的任何东西的原因。)”提到建议和方法,可知本空是对下文的概括。选项C项“Luckily, the truth is that it’s never too late to follow your dream. (幸运的是,事实是,追逐梦想永远不会太晚。)”起到承上启下作用。故选C项。
37.上文“Usually it’s manageable to think of following your dream as taking a series of significant but small steps. (通常情况下,你可以把追求梦想看成是一系列重要而又小的步骤。)”说明可以把追求梦想看成重要而又小的步骤。F项“For example, challenge yourself to write down the path to success in ten stages. (例如,挑战自己,把通往成功的道路分为十个阶段。)”为具体举例解释这一方法,和上文内容意思一致,为上文内容的语意递进。故选F项。
38.该空为段首,总结该段内容。根据下文“When people are interviewed on their deathbeds or write about their lives in autobiographies (自传), it is often observed that major regrets tend to relate to things that were not done. In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (当人们在弥留之际接受采访,或在自传中讲述他们的生活时,我们常常发现,主要的遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”可知,遗憾往往与没有做过的事情有关。A项“You can avoid regret. (你可以避免后悔。)”总结下文内容,引出下文中讲到的人们往往会因为什么而后悔。故选A项。
39.上文“In older age, it’s likely that you will be uncomfortable with the idea that you didn’t even try to do the thing that you loved or attempt to obtain what you truly wanted. (在年老的时候,你很可能会因为你甚至没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西而感到不舒服。)”提到没有尝试做你喜欢的事情或试图获得你真正想要的东西会使自己感到遗憾。下文“But you don’t ever need to feel this way! (但是你不需要有这种感觉!)”说明空处提到了某种感觉。E项“It is painful to feel like you haven’t ever found your true purpose. (感觉自己还没有找到自己真正的目标是很痛苦的。)”为对上文内容的语意递进,同时引起下文,下文中提到的“feel this way (这种感觉)”指的就是该句中的内容。故选E项。
40.上文“Another common worry is that if you follow your dreams, you’ll be “taking steps back”. (另一个常见的担忧是,如果你追随梦想,你会“倒退”。)”提到追随梦想,你会有“倒退”的这种担忧。下文“However, what looks like backward steps in your old life can more productively and accurately be seen as forwarding steps in the brand new life you’re creating. (然而,在你的旧生活中,那些看起来像是倒退的步骤,可以更有效、更准确地被视为你正在创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。)”为转折,说明这些担忧可能是创造的全新生活中的前进步骤。D项“It often comes up when people are at the top of careers they hate. (当人们处于自己讨厌的职业巅峰时,这种情况就会出现。)”起到承上启下作用,说明上文提到的情况。故选D项。

Just then, I felt that someone picked me up. Turing around, I found it was Anoush who helped me up. A wave of embarrassment swept over me and I was even at a loss at that moment. “Just stand up and go on to run. I will keep you company.” Anoush encouraged me with a big smile on his face. Looking into his faithful eyes, I realized that he was not cheating me and that he was really helping me. He just forgot the quarrel between us. I stood up and began to run with him.
When Anoush and I crossed the finish line, the audience at present applauded. Without any preparation, I was hugged by Anoush tightly. Suddenly, I felt regretful to break up with him. Then, I mustered up my courage to say sorry to Anoush. “Thank you and I am so sorry to you, my dear friend. I should not have quarreled with you.” “Just forget it. You know, we are good friends.” Anoush said. I felt more than happy and lucky to have such a friend in my life. Though quarrels between friends could not be avoided, as long as we have him/her in our mind, we would be good friends forever.

66. Dear David,
I hope you’re doing well. I am writing to share some feedback regarding the cooperative learning approach we’ve been using in our English class this semester.
Cooperative learning has been an integral part of our learning process. We’ve had group discussions, team projects, and various collaborative activities. It’s been a refreshing change from traditional teaching methods. From my perspective, the experience has been quite positive. I find that working in groups not only enhances our understanding of the material, but also improves our communication and teamwork skills. It’s a more engaging way to learn and has boosted my confidence in using English.
Overall, cooperative learning has been a valuable addition to our English class, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn English in this interactive and collaborative manner.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Traveling by train can be a romantic way to see the world. Since it was one of the original forms of transportation worldwide, here are some fantastic train trips to add to your travel list.

Where it goes: St. Moritz to Zermatt in the Swiss Alps
This train ride is a favorite among many , as it's the best way to experience the Swiss Alps. It's much more about the journey than the destination, and it gives new meaning to the term “slow travel”, taking over seven hours to pass just 180 miles. But it's one of the most scenic train journeys out there, so the slow pace is welcomed.

D

At first, the task seemed 43 — the amount of trash was overwhelming. But as we worked together, 44 our progress, the mood lifted. A local fisherman stopped to thank us, saying, “Your work helps the fish and birds 45 .” His words gave us 46
By noon, we had filled 20 bags. 47 , we noticed a group of students from another school joining us. They brought extra tools, and we 48 our efforts, dividing the bank into sections.
The most 49 moment came when we found a plastic bag tangled around a young sapling. Carefully, we freed the tree and 50 it with soil. “It’s like giving the river a new friend,” one volunteer joked.
As the sun set, we looked at the cleaned bank, 51 but satisfied. The project taught me that small actions, when 52 , can create big change. The river, once 53 , now sparkled under the evening light.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
