Last week, our school had a special class about Yue embroidery, a traditional Chinese skill.
“Today, we are going to learn how to stitch (缝) the lychee pattern, a fruit pattern that symbolizes good luck.” After the teacher’s example, I thought it would be a(n) ____31____ and quick job—just stitching the lychee patterns on the cloth.
I began to stitch ____32____ as soon as the teacher finished the introduction and I couldn’t wait to see my work. However, the lychee pattern that I finally made was different from what I expected. It was so messy and ugly! Looking at others’ beautiful stitches, I felt ____33____.
The teacher noticed my ____34____. She gently said, “Yue embroidery isn’t just about patterns. Each stitch carries ____35____—love for family, hopes for the future, and respect for our culture. Don’t rush. Take it step by step.” Her words made me think. I realized I had treated it as a task, not a kind of art. Maybe I had to do it by heart.
I took a deep breath and ____36____. “No hurry. Be patient,” I told myself. This time, I smoothed (抚平) the cloth gently, worked on the pattern ____37____, and followed the teacher’s instructions step by step. It took time, but I ____38____ to rush.
The final work wasn’t perfect, but much better than my first try. Comparing them, I saw a change: the same needle and thread showed a different me—someone who could stay calm, ____39____, and careful.
This experience has taught me that Yue embroidery, like life, needs more than just skills. Now that lychee pattern hangs in my room, reminding me that every thread shapes not just cloth, but the ____40____ who holds the needle. I’ll remember this lesson in all my future challenges, adding patience into everything I do.

“Look at this,” Nancy said to her mom as she entered the house. “There’s a five-day art camp this summer.” She held a bright red piece of paper up to her mother.
“Would you like to attend, Nancy?” Mom asked.
“Probably not,” Nancy replied. “None of my friends are going.”
Mom hugged Nancy. She knew Nancy had a hard time jumping into something with unfamiliar faces around. “Maybe next year,” Mom said.
“Maybe,” Nancy sighed (叹气), putting the red paper in her pocket. “I’m going to draw the Westons’ pine (松树) tree. I’ll be out front.”
Nancy sat down and drew the tall pine with her pencil. She drew so carefully that she didn’t notice the sound of the lawn mower (割草机) a few houses down. That’s why she jumped with surprise when Mr. Weston said, “You’ve done a great job showing how strong that tree is on the paper.”
“Thanks,” Nancy smiled and stood up. She cut the grass for him every week.
“I have planted pine trees before, when I worked for the park,” Mr. Weston said. “You have to spread out the roots near the surface so the tree can get enough water and grow tall. If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. I learned that roots grow out, not down.”
“That makes sense,” Nancy thought. She never noticed how far a tree’s roots reached out. It made Nancy think about the art camp and her own roots. She suddenly realized she had to start reaching out.
Nancy took the bright red paper out and made a decision with a little excitement.
59. Why was Nancy surprised by Mr. Weston?
A. Because she cut the grass in a quiet place.
B. Because she noticed the sound of the lawn mower.
C. Because she lost herself in drawing the picture.
D. Because she discussed the camp with her mother.

Fish babies in space? In a space study on zebrafish, Chinese scientists have set a new record. They successfully got four zebrafish to live and grow in a closed water world.
The zebrafish went to China’s space station on the Shenzhou XVIII spaceship on April 25, 2024. Since then, they have been living in a closed water environment with some plants. The fish grew up and had babies in 43 days.
In their special closed environment, the plants made air for the fish and the fish’s waste gave the plants food. The scientists gave the fish food through a special needle (针管).
Such a closed-loop ecosystem (闭环生态系统) is important for future studies in space. It means that plants and animals can live in space more simply and easily.
The scientists also found that the zebrafish acted differently in space. For example, they often swam on their back. The low gravity (重力) in space is a big reason. On the earth, gravity pulls everything to the earth’s center, and animals can find their way easily. Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become stronger.
Humans and zebrafish share as high as 70 percent of the same genes (基因). So the new finding will help scientists better understand human health.
62. What do we know about the space study?
A. It lasted for less than one month. B. The zebrafish stopped growing.
C. It took place in a closed environment. D. Scientists from different countries did it together.
63. Which picture should be in the circle to show the closed-loop ecosystem?
A. B.
C. D.
64. What was the result of the low gravity in space?
A. The zebrafish became stronger.
B. Animals could find their way without difficulty.
C. The zebrafish swam upside down.
D. The zebrafish’s bodies worked harder.
65. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The space study on zebrafish.
B. The plan for studying human genes.
C. Further studies about zebrafish on the earth.
D. The research of the closed-loop ecosystem.

Did you know that one third of the food we eat every day gets thrown away, while one in nine people around the world goes hungry? It takes about 3,072 hours to produce a single grain (谷粒) of rice, yet it only takes a second to waste it. In October, students from Beijing No.8 Middle School visited an exhibition center that showed how to recycle kitchen waste.
They saw how kitchen waste, such as fruit peels and leftovers, could be turned into something useful. “First, people collect the kitchen waste and then crush (压碎) it. After that, they take out the solid (固体的) part and break it down before turning it into a soil conditioner (土壤改良剂),” 13-year-old Lu Zichen said. He added that this conditioner could help improve the quality of the soil.
The students also learned how to make liquid fertilizer (液体肥料) from kitchen waste. This fertilizer helps plants grow. Qi Yiming, 13, even tried making it himself. “It’s quite simple. First, you place the kitchen waste into a container. Then you add microbial agents (微生物菌剂), and let it sit for a few days to get the fertilizer,” Qi explained. “I am so glad to use the chemical knowledge I learned to make liquid fertilizer myself. It is beneficial in daily life. It is a wonderful experience.”
Yu Qian, a teacher from the school and an organizer of the activity, talked about the importance of hands-on learning. “I hope students not only focus on the textbook but also go outside to put their knowledge into practice. It makes learning more interesting and useful,” she said.
66. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By using a saying. B. By telling a story.
C. By sending a message. D. By asking a question.
67. What is the soil conditioner used for?
A. To break the solid part down. B. To crush the kitchen waste.
C. To improve the quality of the soil. D. To collect the kitchen waste.
68. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. How to learn chemistry well. B. How to collect kitchen waste.
C. How to make liquid fertilizer. D. How to grow plants better.
69. Which word is close to the underlined word “beneficial”?
A. Thankful. B. Helpful. C. Useless. D. Hopeless.
70. Which can be a proper title for the text?
A. Ways to Recycle Kitchen Waste B. The Serious Problem of Food Waste
C. A Visit to the Science Center D. The Importance of Protecting the Environment

Are Home Robots a Good Idea?
There are many types of home robots on the market today. They can perform many tasks, such as carrying drinks and playing music. A kind of robot can even be controlled when the owner isn’t at home. It can be used to check on pets and people, or whether the oven is left on. Other home robots can be used to do chores and more. Do you think home robots are a good idea?
Yes! (Emily) Home robots can help out with chores around the house. This gives people more time to do the things they enjoy.
Home robots can also make people feel safer in their houses. For example, they can alert the owner when there is a water leak or a broken window. They can keep an eye on pets or young children. What’s more, home robots can accompany people and make them feel less lonely. They can also help people stay in touch with other people.
—Emily
No! (Lucas) Doing housework is a good way for us to stay active and healthy. If home robots do everything for us, we’ll become lazy. Even worse, we will forget how to do certain tasks. If home robots break down, we may not be able to clean our home or cook for ourselves. Lots of people have already relied on phones for navigation (导航) and can’t read maps. Also, many home robots have cameras and microphones. They may record lots of information about us, including our conversations, and even invade (侵犯) our privacy.
—Lucas

60. What’s the correct time order of the following events?
①Mom comforted Nancy. ②Mr. Weston talked with Nancy.
③Nancy got the bright red paper. ④Nancy sat down and drew a picture.
A. ①④③② B. ③②①④ C. ④③①② D. ③①④②
61. What would Nancy probably do according to the last paragraph?
A. Visit Mr. Weston. B. Go to the art camp. C. Draw another tree. D. Try something safe.
【答案】59. C 60. D 61. B
根据原文“Nancy sat down and drew the tall pine with her pencil. She drew so carefully that she didn’t notice the sound of the lawn mower a few houses down. That’s why she jumped with surprise when Mr. Weston said...”可知,Nancy画画太投入,没注意到周围的声音,所以被突然出现的Weston先生吓到了。
【60题详解】
根据原文情节发展顺序:Nancy got the bright red paper、Mom comforted Nancy、Nancy sat down and drew a picture、Mr. Weston talked with Nancy;因此正确顺序是③①④②。
【61题详解】
根据最后一段“Nancy took the bright red paper out and made a decision with a little excitement.”,结合前文她害怕陌生环境不想参加艺术营,又受松树“树根向外生长”的启发,意识到自己也需要主动向外探索,因此她很可能会决定去参加艺术营。
