That morning, after taking our oldest child to kindergarten, I went back home, let our two younger kids play, and worked on my medical report. It was wonderful, but it hit me that my career in hospital wasn’t making a difference in anyone’s life. I needed something that would stretch my limits and push me to grow. My career enabled me to work from home and become a foster (领养) mother, providing safety for a child who needed it desperately.
Monday morning, I grabbed the phone and rang the number I’d found via Google for the nearest Department of Children’s Services. The man on the other end was receptive to my questions and explained the next step of training, involving eight weeks of classes designed to prepare and educate foster parents. We continued through all the classes, the home visits, background checks, and seemingly endless steps.
Five months after our approval, a middle-of-the-night phone call woke me. I aroused my husband and we hurried to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, where our foster placement awaited us in the ER, ill and malnourished. It didn’t take long for us to realize the full depth of her suffering. Six months later, her half-brother came to us by our request. We now had five children under our care.
On August 12, 2016, our family of seven walked into a small courtroom. The children’s lawyer and social worker were there. With just a few words, our adoption was finalized. These two amazing children weren’t going home, because they were already home. We are their forever family and they are our forever children. We may not be able to change the entire world, but we have changed the world entirely for our new children.
4. How did the author feel about her hospital work?
A. Unusually demanding. B. Filled with challenges.
C. Lacking in motivation. D. Packed with chances.
5. What caused the author to choose to adopt children?
A. She experienced training to raise children properly.
B. She felt sympathetic for abused children she knew
C. She felt confident about her ability to raise children.
D. She desired to have a positive impact on others’ lives.
6. How did the author receive her first foster child?
A. The child was brought to her home by a social worker.
B. She got a midnight call and rushed to a hospital ER.
C. She picked the child up from a kindergarten.
D. The child’s half-brother introduced them.
7. Why did the author appear at the courtroom?
A. To make the adoption officially legal.
B. To receive another adopted child.
C. To put the adopted kids elsewhere.
D. To begin the kids’ adoption in her home.

In the past, when driving to a cinema was necessary for entertainment, it was clear how one’s actions could affect the environment. After all, you were jumping into your car, driving across town, coughing out emissions (产生排放) and using gas all the way. But now that we’re used to staying at home and streaming movies, we might get a little proud. After all, we’re just picking up our phones and maybe turning on the TV. You’re welcome. Mother Nature.
The Shift Project, which is based in France, recently published a report that says, “Not so fast.” According to “Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video”, digital technologies are responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that energy use is increasing by 9% a year. Watching a half-hour show would cause 1.6 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions. That’s like driving 6.28 kilometers. And in the European Union, the Eureka project found that data centers (where videos are stored) there used 25% more energy in 2017 compared to just three years earlier, reports the BBC.
Streaming is only predicted to grow further as we become fonder of our digital devices (设备) and the chance to access entertainment whenever and wherever we want is rising. Online video use is expected to increase by four times from 2017 to 2022 and account for 80% of all Internet traffic by 2022. By then, about 60% of the world’s population will be online.
Although you probably won’t quit streaming services, experts say there are still ways to help reduce the impact of your online activity. For example, according to Lutz Stobbe, a researcher from the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, we have no need to upload 25 pictures of the same thing to the cloud because it consumes energy every time. If instead you delete a few things here and there, you can save energy. Moreover, it’s also a good idea to stream over Wi-Fi, watch on the smallest screen you can, and turn off your Wi-Fi in your home if you’re not using your devices.
8. What topic is the first paragraph intended to lead in?
A. The environmental impacts of streaming services.
B. The improvements on environmental awareness.
C. The change in the way people seek entertainment.
D. The impact of driving private cars on the environment.
9. What does Para. 2 imply about digital tech’s environmental effect?
A. Their energy use has been declining in recent years.
B. Watching a half-hour show is worse than driving 6 km.
C. Their contribution to emissions is growing rapidly.
D. Data centers in the EU used less energy in 2017.
10. What can we infer about the use of streaming services?
A. Its environmental effects are worsening.
B. It is being reduced to protect the planet.
C. It is easily available to almost everyone.
D. Its side effects have drawn global attention.
11. Which of the following is the most environmentally-friendly?
A. Playing online games over mobile networks.
B. Downloading music on a personal computer.
C. Uploading a lot of images of the same thing.
D. Watching downloaded movies on a mobile phone.
D
Approximately 3.66 million years ago, an individual belonging to an unknown hominid (原始人类) species walked across a field of wet volcanic ash in what is today East Africa, leaving several footprints behind.
A new study suggests that the five ancient footprints — largely ignored since they were partly uncovered in 1976 at Tanzania’s Laetoli site — show evidence of a hominid walking upright. Earlier researchers believed the marks were difficult to classify and could have been produced by a young bear standing up and taking a few steps. But the latest analysis refutes that suggestion.
DeSilva, together with McNutt and their colleagues, completely dug out and cleaned the five Laetoli footprints in June 2019. Then they measured, photographed and 3D scanned the ancient tracks. McNutt’s group focused on two footprints that were particularly well-preserved. The Laetoli individual’s foot shape, size, and walking style differed in several ways from those of other hominids at the same site. The prints also didn’t match those from modern black bears and modern chimps (黑猩猩) walking upright.
According to researchers, the Laetoli individual’s foot was wider and more chimplike than a human’s. Its big toe stuck out slightly from the second toe (脚趾), but not as much as in chimps. On one step, the Laetoli individual’s left leg crossed in front of the right leg, leaving a left footprint directly in front of the previous track. People may cross-step (交叉迈步) in this way when trying to regain balance. Bears and chimps stand wide due to their bone structure, which stops them from walking like the Laetoli individual and from cross-stepping, scientists say.
Given that only two of the ancient footprints are complete enough to analyze thoroughly, the possibility that a chimp other than a hominid made the Laetoli footprints can’t be ruled out, says William Harcourt Smith, a scientist at Lehman College. But evidence of cross-stepping is enough to prove that a hominid made the tracks, he says.
12. What does the underlined word “refutes” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. supports. B. contradicts. C. ignores. D. criticizes.
13. Why do researchers think the footprints differ from those of bears or chimps?
A. They are not as similar to chimps.
B. They have toes sticking out.
C. They possess features of cross-stepping.
D. They show relatively wide standing.
14. What does William think of the new research finding?
A. It’s confusing. B. It’s challenging.
C. It’s persuasive. D. It’s doubtful.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a new discovery. B. To describe a major event.
C. To introduce an unknown species. D. To compare different hominid species.

Joseph Conrad, a famous English novelist, said that his goal as a writer was “to make you hear, to make you feel, and above all, to make you see. That, and no more, is everything.” ____16____ Often it leaves a single sharp impression to be turned over and over in the mind. To explain the plot, then, is to tell what happened in the story and to whom. In some short stories, plot is the dominating element. In other short stories, plot plays a very minor role.
In Hemingway’s story, The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level. ____18____ To understand and appreciate the story, the reader must be able to identify its general topic or theme. The next step is to identify the device by which the author comments on this theme. ____19____

I was waiting for my best friend, Lily, at the school gate. It was the day of the annual art exhibition, and we had promised to meet at exactly 3:00 p.m. to get the best seats. The clock was ticking, and the sky gradually turned dark. Thirty minutes had passed, but Lily was still nowhere to be seen.
I stood under a big tree, checking my phone repeatedly. No messages, no calls. Anger slowly rose in my chest. “She must have forgotten completely,” I muttered to myself, feeling stupid for being so early. I decided that even if she showed up, I would never speak to her.
Just as I was about to leave, a familiar figure ran towards me. It was Lily, out of breath, with a big smile on her face. “Sorry, sorry!” she said, gasping for air. “I tried to get here as fast as I could.” Looking at her messy hair and dirty shoes, I thought she was just making excuses. Without a word, I rolled my eyes and walked past her towards the exhibition hall.
Lily didn’t argue or explain more but followed me silently. I could feel her eyes on my back, but I kept my face cold, determined to teach her a lesson.
When we finally arrived, the lights were on. We walked to our usual spot, only to find that our seats were still empty. However, beside the seats, there was a wrapped gift box and a note written in Lily’s neat handwriting: “For my dearest friend, I prepared it as an anniversary gift just for you. Thank you for being my best friend for ten years. I hope you like it.”
Paragraph 1: My anger melted away the moment I read the note and saw the gift.

Paragraph 2: Lily sat down beside me, looking nervous and waiting for my reaction.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. A

C

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述了一项新研究对坦桑尼亚莱托利遗址古脚印的分析,表明其由直立行走的原始人类留下。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Earlier researchers believed the marks were difficult to classify and could have been produced by a young bear standing up and taking a few steps. But the latest analysis refutes that suggestion.(早期研究人员认为,这些痕迹很难分类,可能是由一只小熊站起来走几步留下的。但最新的分析驳斥了这一观点)”可知,早期研究人员认为这些脚印可能是小熊留下的,但最新分析refutes这一观点,所以“refutes”意为“驳斥,反驳”,与“contradicts”意思相近。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Bears and chimps stand wide due to their bone structure, which stops them from walking like the Laetoli individual and from cross-stepping, scientists say.(科学家说,熊和黑猩猩由于骨骼结构的原因站立得很宽,这使得它们无法像莱托利古人类那样行走,也无法交叉迈步)”以及第五段中“But evidence of cross-stepping is enough to prove that a hominid made the tracks, he says.(但他说,交叉迈步的证据足以证明这些脚印是原始人类留下的)”可知,研究人员认为这些脚印与熊或黑猩猩的不同,是因为它们具有交叉迈步的特征。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Given that only two of the ancient footprints are complete enough to analyze thoroughly, the possibility that a chimp other than a hominid made the Laetoli footprints can’t be ruled out, says William Harcourt Smith, a scientist at Lehman College. But evidence of cross-stepping is enough to prove that a hominid made the tracks, he says.(莱曼学院的科学家威廉·哈考特·史密斯表示,鉴于只有两个古脚印完整到足以进行全面分析,因此不能排除留下莱托利脚印的是黑猩猩而非原始人类这种可能性。但他说,交叉迈步的证据足以证明这些脚印是原始人类留下的)”可知,William认为交叉迈步的证据足以证明这些脚印是原始人类留下的,即他认为这个新的研究发现是有说服力的。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“A new study suggests that the five ancient footprints — largely ignored since they were partly uncovered in 1976 at Tanzania’s Laetoli site — show evidence of a hominid walking upright.(一项新的研究表明,这五个古老的脚印——自1976年在坦桑尼亚莱托利遗址部分出土以来基本被忽视——显示了原始人类直立行走的证据)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了一项新研究对坦桑尼亚莱托利遗址古脚印的分析,表明其由直立行走的原始人类留下,所以文章的目的是介绍一项新发现。

That, and no more, is everything.” ____16____ Often it leaves a single sharp impression to be turned over and over in the mind. After finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies, or the unpredictability of human behavior.
____17____ The first and most obvious level is conveyed through the plot. Plot refers to the sequence of events, to the actions of the characters and the situations in which they are involved.
Readers cannot appreciate a short story fully unless they react not only to what has been said but also to how it has been said. ____20____ Style grows out of the writer’s own personality and can be seen in the choice of words and phrases, the arrangement of sentences, the rhythm and tone. 【16题详解】
空处后提到“Often it leaves a single sharp impression to be turned over and over in the mind. After finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies, or the unpredictability of human behavior.
第三段第一句提到“In Hemingway’s story, The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level.”(然而,在海明威的故事《老人与海》中,我们必须从另一个层面来探讨内容。)
第三段倒数第二句提到“The next step is to identify the device by which the author comments on this theme. ”(下一步是确定作者评论这个主题的方式。)结合第二段及第三段内容可知,这两段讲述了读者理解小说内容的方式,因此在该段结尾应提到读者理解小说内容的程度。E项提到“最后,读者应该能够解释作者对主题的见解。”该项是读者理解小说内容的最终结果,符合文意。故选E。
【20题详解】
最后一段第三句提到“Style grows out of the writer’s own personality and can be seen in the choice of words and phrases, the arrangement of sentences, the rhythm and tone.”(风格来源于作者自身的个性,可以从遣词造句、句子安排、节奏和语气的选择中看出。)由此判断空处应提到读者需要关注小说的风格。A项提到“他们必须寻找风格和结构。”起到引起下文的作用,符合文意。故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】例文
Paragraph 1: My anger melted away the moment I read the note and saw the gift. I gently unwrapped the package, revealing a delicate hand-painted fan with my favorite cherry blossom pattern. The bright colors and careful details made my heart soften. Glancing at Lily, I noticed her left knee was scraped and dirty, her coat torn. Realizing she must have fallen while rushing to make the gift, I was struck by a wave of remorse. How could I have judged her so harshly without knowing the truth?
Paragraph 2: Lily sat down beside me, looking nervous and waiting for my reaction. Taking her hand, I smiled and apologized sincerely for my cold attitude. She sighed in relief and explained that she had spent the whole afternoon making the fan, but then got caught in a sudden rainstorm on the way. At that moment, the beautiful fan felt warmer than any gift before. This incident taught me a precious lesson: never jump to conclusions before you truly understand someone else’s story.
